We prove the so-called Severi inequality, stating that the invariants of a minimal smooth complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension satisfy: K^2_S >= 4χ(S).
Let $X$ be a projective, normal, minimal and Gorenstein $n$-dimensional complex variety of general type. Suppose $X$ is of maximal Albanese dimension. We prove that $K^n_X \ge 2 n! χ(K_X)$
Let $f: X \to B$ be a relatively minimal fibration of maximal Albanese dimension from a variety $X$ of dimension $n \ge 2$ to a curve $B$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that $K_{X/B}^n \ge 2n! χ_f$, which was conjectured by Barja in [2]. Via the strategy outlined in [5], it also leads to a new proof of the Severi inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. Moreover, when the equality holds and $χ_f > 0$, we prove that the general fiber $F$ of $f$ has to satisfy the Severi equality that $K_F^{n-1} = 2(n-1)! χ(F, ω_F)$. We also prove some …
In 1932 F. Severi claimed, with an incorrect proof, that every smooth minimal projective surface $S$ such that the bundle $Ω^1_S$ is generically generated by global sections satisfies the topological inequality $2c_1^2(S)\ge c_2(S)$. According to Enriques-Kodaira classification, the above inequality is easily verified when the Kodaira dimension of the surface is $\le 1$, while for surfaces of general type it is still an open problem known as Severi conjecture. In this paper we prove Severi conjecture under the additional mild hypothesis that $S$ has ample canonical bundle. Moreover, under the …
We study and obtain Slope inequalities for fibred irregular varieties of non-maximal Albanese dimension. We give a comparison theorem between Clifford-Severi and Slope inequalities for this type of fibrations. We also obtain a set of Slope inequalities considering the geometry of the Albanese map and the associated eventual maps.
Let S be a smooth minimal complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. Under the assumption that the canonical class of S is ample and the irregularity of S, q(S), is greater or equal to 5 we show that K^2>= 4χ(S)+(10/3)q(S)-8, thus improving the well known Severi inequality K^2>=4χ(S). We also give stronger inequalities under extra assumptions on the Albanese map or on the canonical map of S.
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type and of maximal Albanese dimension; by the Severi inequality one has $K^2_S\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_S)$. We prove that the equality $K^2_S=4χ(\mathcal O_S)$ holds if and only if $q(S):= h^1(\mathcal O_S)=2$ and the canonical model of $S$ is a double cover of the Albanese surface branched on an ample divisor with at most negligible singularities.
We study Severi type inequalities for big line bundles on irregular varieties via cohomological rank functions. We show that these Severi type inequalities on an irregular variety $X$ are related to some natural defined birational invariants of a general fiber $F$ of the Albanese morphism of $X$. As applications, we provide a new lower bound of volumes of irregular threefolds, a sharp lower bound of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type, and show that the canonical model of such a variety with the minimal volume should be a flat double covers of a principally polarized ab…
Given a smooth complex projective variety X, a line bundle L of X an element v of H^1(O_X) and a section s in H^0(L) that deforms to first order in the direction v, we give a sufficient condition on v in terms of Koszul cohomology for this first order deformation to extend to an analytic deformation. We apply this result to improve known results on the paracanonical system of a variety of maximal Albanese dimension, due to Beauville in the case of surfaces and to Lazarsfeld-Popa in higher dimension. In particular, we prove the inequality p_g(X)>=χ(K_X)+q(X)-1 for a variety X of maximal Albanes…
In this note, I review an aspect of some new techniques introduced recently in collaboration with Miguel Ángel Barja and Rita Pardini: the construction of the continuous rank function. I give a sketch of how to use this function to prove the Barja-Clifford-Pardini-Severi inequalities for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and to obtain the classification of varieties satisfying the equalities.
We give a sharp lower bound for the selfintersection of a nef line bundle $L$ on an irregular variety $X$ in terms of its continuous global sections and the Albanese dimension of $X$, which we call the Generalized Clifford-Severi inequality. We also extend the result to nef vector bundles and give a slope inequality for fibred irregular varieties. As a byproduct we obtain a lower bound for the volume of irregular varieties; when $X$ is of maximal Albanese dimension the bound is $Vol(X) \geq 2 n! χω_X$ and it is sharp.
Let $X$ be a minimal surface of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with irregularity $q\geq 2$. We show that $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_X)+4(q-2)$ if $K_X^2<\frac92χ(\mathcal O_X)$, and also obtain the characterization of the equality. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Manetti on the geography of irregular surfaces if $K_X^2\geq 36(q-2)$ or $χ(\mathcal O_X)\geq 8(q-2)$, and we also prove a conjecture that surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with $K_X^2=4χ(\mathcal O_X)$ are exactly the resolution of double covers of abelian surfaces branched over ample divis…
We prove effective upper bounds on the global sections of nef line bundles of small generic degree over a fibered surface over a field of any characteristic. It can be viewed as a relative version of the classical Noether inequality for surfaces. As a consequence, we give a new proof of the slope inequality for fibered surface without using any stability method. The treatment is essentially different from these of Xiao, Cornalba--Harris and Moriwaki. We also study the geography problem of surfaces in positive characteristics and show that the Severi inequality is true for surfaces of general t…
We prove the equivalence between Clifford-Severi inequalities for good classes of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and Slope Inequalities for fibrations of such varieties over curves. This provides a big set of new Slope Inequalities and characterizes the limit cases. It also gives a machinery to automatically obtain other higher dimensional Slope and Clifford-Severi inequalities from inequalities in low dimension. For this, we construct a continuous version of Xiao's method for irregular fibrations.
Let $X$ be a minimal surface of general type over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$ of $\mathrm{char}.(\mathbf{k})=p\ge 0$. If the Albanese morphism $a_X:X\to \mathrm{Alb}_X$ is generically finite onto its image, we formulate a constant $c(X,L)\ge 0$ for a very ample line bundle $L$ on $\mathrm{Alb}_X$ such that $c(X,L)=0$ if and only if $\dim \mathrm{Alb}_X=2$ and $a_X: X\to \mathrm{Alb}_X$ is a double cover. A refined Severi inequality $$K^2_X\ge (4+{\rm min}\{\,c(X,L),\,\frac{1}{3}\,\})χ(\mathcal{O}_X)$$ is proved. Then we prove that $K^2_X=4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)$ if and only if the can…
For a smooth minimal surface of general type $S$ with $Albdim(S) = 2$, Severi inequality says that $K_S^2 \geq 4χ(S)$, which was proved by Pardini. It is expected that when the equality is attained, $S$ is birational to a double cover over an Abelian surface branched along a divisor having at most negligible singularities. This was proved when $K_S$ is ample by Manetti. In this paper, we applied Manetti's method to the canonical model of $S$, with some additional assumptions we proved Severi inequality and characterized the surfaces with $K_S^2 = 4χ(S)$.In addition, we gave a characterization …
We prove the optimal Noether-Severi inequality that $\mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3} χ(ω_{X})$ for all smooth and irregular $3$-folds $X$ of general type over $\mathbb{C}$. For those $3$-folds $X$ attaining the equality, we completely describe their canonical models and show that the topological fundamental group $π_1(X) \simeq \mathbb{Z}^2$. As a corollary, we obtain for the same $X$ another optimal inequality that $\mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3}h^0_a(X, K_X)$ where $h^0_a(X, K_X)$ stands for the continuous rank of $K_X$, and we show that $X$ attains this equality if and only if $\mathrm{vol…
Let $X$ be a surface of general type with maximal Albanese dimension: if $K_X^2<\frac{9}{2}χ(\mathcal{O}_X)$, one has $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)+4(q-2)$. We give a complete classification of surfaces for which equality holds for $q(X)\geq 3$: these are surfaces whose canonical model is a double cover of a product elliptic surface branched over an ample divisor with at most negligible singularities which intersects the elliptic fibre twice. We also prove, in the same hypothesis, that a surface $X$ with $K_X^2\neq 4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)+4(q-2)$ satisfies $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)+8(q-2)$ and we …
For a minimal smooth projective surface $S$ of general type over a field of characteristic $p>0$, we prove that $K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S).$ Moreover, if $18χ(\cal{O}_S)<K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S)$, Albanese morphism of $S$ must induces a genus two fiberation. A classification of surfaces with $K^2_S=32χ(\cal{O}_S)$ is also given. The inequality also implies $χ(\cal{O}_S)>0$, which answers completely a question of Shepherd-Barron.
Let $X$ be a surface of general type with maximal Albanese dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than two: we prove that if $K_X^2<\frac{9}{2}χ(\mathcal{O}_X)$, one has $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)+4(q-2)$. Moreover we give a complete classification of surfaces for which equality holds for $q(X)\geq 3$: these are surfaces whose canonical model is a double cover of a product elliptic surface branched over an ample divisor with at most negligible singularities which intersects the elliptic fibre twice. In addition we expose a similar partial result over algebraic…
In this paper, we collect basic properties of the Albanese dimension and explain how to generalize the main theorem of [F2](math.AG/0204262). This paper is a supplement and a generalization of [F2]. We also prove an inequality of irregularities for algebraic fiber spaces in the appendix, which is an exposition of Fujita-Kawamata's semi-positivity theorem.
In this Thesis we study surfaces of general type with maximal Albanese dimension for which the quantity $K_X^2-4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-4(q-2)$ vanishes or is "small", that is surfaces close to the Severi lines. Over the complex numbers, it is known that a surface $X$, provided that $K_X^2<\frac{9}{2}χ(\mathcal{O}_X)$, has to satisfy the inequality $K_X^2-4χ(\mathcal{O}_X)-4(q-2)\geq 0$. We give a constructive and complete classification of surfaces for which equality holds: these are surfaces whose canonical model is a double cover of an Abelian surface ($q=2$) or of a product elliptic surface ($q\g…
In this paper, we first construct varieties of any dimension $n>2$ fibered over curves with low slopes. These examples violate the conjectural slope inequality of Barja and Stoppino [BS14b]. Led by their conjecture, we focus on finding the lowest possible slope when $n=3$. Based on a characteristic $p > 0$ method, we prove that the sharp lower bound of the slope of fibered $3$-folds over curves is $4/3$, and it occurs only when the general fiber is a $(1, 2)$-surface. Otherwise, the sharp lower bound is $2$. We also obtain a Cornalba-Harris-Xiao type slope inequality for families of surfaces o…
We study minimal complex surfaces S of general type with q(S)=q and p_g(S)=2q-3, q>= 5. We give a complete classification in case that S has a fibration onto a curve of genus >=2. For these surfaces K^2=8χ. In general we prove that K^2>=7χ-1 and that the stronger inequality K^2\ge 8χholds under extra assumptions (e.g., if the canonical system has no fixed part or the canonical map has even degree). We also describe the Albanese map of S.
A generalized Kummer surface $X=Km(T,G)$ is the resolution of a quotient of a torus $T$ by a finite group of symplectic automorphisms $G$. We complete the classification of generalized Kummer surfaces by studying the two last groups which have not been yet studied. For these surfaces, we compute the associated Kummer lattice $K_{G}$, which is the minimal primitive sub-lattice containing the exceptional curves of the resolution $X\to T/G$. We then prove that a K3 surface is a generalised Kummer surface of type $Km(T,G)$ if and only if its Néron-Severi group contains $K_{G}$. For smooth-orbifold…
The aim of this note is to construct sequences of vector bundles with unbounded rank and discriminant on an arbitrary algebraic surface. This problem, on principally polarized abelian varieties with cyclic Neron-Severi group generated by the polarization, was considered by Nakashima in connection with the Douglas-Reinbacher-Yau conjecture on the Strong Bogomolov Inequality. In particular we show that on any surface, the Strong Bogomolov Inequality $SBI_l$ is false for all $l>4$.
