We give a natural construction of unramified over Z framed mixed Tate motives, whose periods are the multiple zeta values. Namely, for each convergent multiple zeta-value we define two boundary divisors A and B in the moduli space M_{0,n+3} of stable curves of genus zero. The corresponding multiple zeta-motive is the n-th cohomology of the pair (M_{0,n+3} -A,B).
For each field k, we define an abelian category of rationally decomposed mixed motives with integer coefficients. When k is finite, we show that the category is Tannakian, and we prove formulas relating the behaviour of zeta functions near integers to certain Ext groups. This is the submitted version, with minor corrections and additions from the first version.
We study a family of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ whose periods are linear forms in the zeta values $ζ(n)$. They naturally include the Beukers-Rhin-Viola integrals for $ζ(2)$ and the Ball-Rivoal linear forms in odd zeta values. We give a general integral formula for the coefficients of the linear forms and a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of the coefficients of a given parity. The main underlying result is a geometric construction of a minimal ind-object in the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ which contains all the non-trivial extensions between simple objec…
Let $k$ be a totally real number field. For every odd $n\geq 3$, we construct a Dedekind zeta motive in the category $\MT(k)$ of mixed Tate motives over $k$. By directly calculating its Hodge realisation, we prove that its period is a rational multiple of $π^{n[k:\Q]}ζ^*_k(1-n)$, where $ζ^*_k(1-n)$ denotes the special value of the Dedekind zeta function of $k$. We deduce that the group $\Ext^1_{\MT(k)} (\Q(0),\Q(n))$ is generated by the cohomology of a quadric relative to hyperplanes. This proves a surjectivity result for certain motivic complexes for $k$ that have been conjectured to calculat…
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
We consider zeta functions with values in the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives. Investigating the lambda-structure of this ring, we deduce a functional equation for the zeta function of abelian varieties. Furthermore, we show that the property of having a rational zeta function satisfying a functional equation is preserved under products.
In this paper, we construct an object of the abelian category of mixed Tate motive associated to multiple zeta values. as a consequence, we prove the inequality of the dimension of the vector space generated by multiple zeta values, which is conjectured by Zagier. (Some errors was corrected from the first version. Namely, we changed the definition of the boundary $\bold B^0$.)
We construct the t-motivic mixed Carlitz zeta category over $\F_q(t)$ and show that it contains all the (mixed) t-motives with Carlitz-Thakur multi-zeta values as periods constructed by Anderson and Thakur. Our construction is canonical and our category is Tannakian and neutral and every object is equipped with a weight filtration whose graded pieces are Carlitz motives over $\F_q(t)$. For any finite separable extension L/\F_q(t) we show that existence of a similar category over $L$ is a consequence of a version of a conjecture of L. Taelman. Along the way we also prove the existence of the ca…
An abelian category of relative pure motives is constructed along the lines of André (over a field of characteristic 0). An algebraic stack is shown to possess a motive in this sense. This motive is studied for the moduli stack of G-bundles over the universal curve for appropriate G, and a motivic Atiyah-Bott formula is obtained. By taking Hodge realization, a description of the corresponding variations of Hodge structures over M_g is given. In particular, it follows that these lie in the tensor category generated by the variation of Hodge structure associated to the curve itself. Similar resu…
It oftens occurs that Taylor coefficients of (dimensionally regularized) Feynman amplitudes $I$ with rational parameters, expanded at an integral dimension $D= D_0$, are not only periods (Belkale, Brosnan, Bogner, Weinzierl) but actually multiple zeta values (Broadhurst, Kreimer). In order to determine, at least heuristically, whether this is the case in concrete instances, the philosophy of motives - more specifically, the theory of mixed Tate motives - suggests an arithmetic approach (Kontsevich): counting points of algebraic varieties related to $I$ modulo sufficiently many primes $p$ and c…
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and A be a rigid tensor K-linear category. Let M be a finite-dimensional object of A in the sense of Kimura-O'Sullivan. We prove that the "motivic" zeta function of M with coefficients in K\_0(A) has a functional equation. When A is the category of Chow motives over a field, we thus recover and generalise previous work of Franziska Heinloth, who considered the case where M is the motive of an abelian variety. We also get a functional equation for the zeta function of any motive modulo homological equivalence over a finite field. Our functional equation invo…
We prove: if the (étale or de Rham) realization functor is conservative on the category $DM_{gm}$ of Voevodsky motives with rational coefficients then motivic zeta functions of arbitrary varieties are rational and numerical motives are Kimura-finite. The latter statement immediately implies that the category of numerical motives is (essentially) Tannakian. This observation becomes actual due to the recent announcement of J. Ayoub that the De Rham cohomology realization is conservative on $DM_{gm}(k)$ whenever $\operatorname{char} k=0$. We apply this statement to exterior powers of motives comi…
In this paper, we give a natural construction of mixed Tate motives whose periods are a class of iterated integrals which include the multiple polylogarithm functions. Given such an iterated integral, we construct two divisors $A$ and $B$ in the moduli spaces $\mathcal{\bar{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus 0, and prove that the cohomology of the pair $(\mathcal{\bar{M}}_{0,n}-A,B-B\cap A)$ is a framed mixed Tate motive whose period is that integral. It generalizes the results of A. Goncharov and Yu. Manin for multiple zeta values. Then we apply our construction to the dilogarit…
We show the compactly supported motive of the moduli stack of degree $n$ rational curves on the weighted projective stack $\mathcal{P}(a,b)$ is of mixed Tate type over any base field $K$ with $\text{char}(K) \nmid a,b$ and has class $\mathbb{L}^{(a+b)n+1}-\mathbb{L}^{(a+b)n-1}$ in the Grothendieck ring of stacks. In particular, this improves upon the result of [HP] regarding the arithmetic invariant of the moduli stack $\mathcal{L}_{1,12n} := \mathrm{Hom}_{n}(\mathbb{P}^1, \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,1})$ of stable elliptic fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with $12n$ nodal singular fibers and a …
We prove that the category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$ is spanned by the motivic fundamental group of $\Pro^1$ minus three points. We prove a conjecture by M. Hoffman which states that every multiple zeta value is a $\Q$-linear combination of $ζ(n_1,..., n_r)$ where $n_i\in \{2,3\}$.
We prove 2-out-of-3 property for rationality of motivic zeta function in distinguished triangles in Voevodsky's category DM. As an application, we show rationality of motivic zeta functions for all varieties whose motives are in the thick triangulated monoidal subcategory generated by motives of quasi-projective curves in DM. Joint with a result of P.O'Sullivan it also gives an example of a variety whose motive is not finite-dimensional while the motivic zeta function is rational.
We prove a formula for the motive of the stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients.
We study the motive of the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles of coprime rank and degree on a smooth projective curve C over a field k under the assumption that C has a rational point. We show this motive is contained in the thick tensor subcategory of Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives with rational coefficients generated by the motive of C. Moreover, over a field of characteristic zero, we prove a motivic non-abelian Hodge correspondence: the integral motives of the Higgs and de Rham moduli spaces are isomorphic.
For a split reductive group G over a finite field, we show that the intersection (cohomology) motive of the moduli stack of iterated G-shtukas with bounded modification and level structure is defined independently of the standard conjectures on motivic t-structures on triangulated categories of motives. This is in accordance with general expectations on the independence of l in the Langlands correspondence for function fields.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g \geq 2$ and $M_L$ be the moduli space of rank 2 stable vector bundles on $C$ whose determinants are isomorphic to a fixed line bundle $L$ of degree 1 on $C.$ S. del Bano studied motives of moduli spaces of rank 2 vector bundles on $C$ and computed the motive of $M_L.$ In this note, we prove that his result gives an interesting decomposition of the motive of $M_L.$ This motivic decomposition is compatible with a conjecture of M. S. Narasimhan which predicts semi-orthogonal decomposition of derived category of the moduli space.
We study the rational Chow motives of certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on a smooth projective curve with additional structure (such as a parabolic structure or Higgs field). In the parabolic case, these moduli spaces depend on a choice of stability condition given by weights; our approach is to use explicit descriptions of variation of this stability condition in terms of simple birational transformations (standard flips/flops and Mukai flops) for which we understand the variation of the Chow motives. For moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles, we describe the change in motive under …
The zeta function of a motive over a finite field is multiplicative with respect to the direct sum of motives. It has beautiful analytic properties, as were predicted by the Weil conjectures. There is also a multiplicative zeta function, which instead respects the tensor product of motives. There is no analogue of the Weil conjectures, and we give a sufficient criterion for an analytic continuation to exist. This happens, for example, for cellular varieties, abelian varieties, or genus g > 1 curves with a supersingular Jacobian.
We prove formulas for the rational Chow motives of moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles and Higgs bundles of rank 3 and coprime degree on a smooth projective curve. Our approach involves identifying criteria to lift identities in (a completion of) the Grothendieck group of effective Chow motives to isomorphisms in the category of Chow motives. For the Higgs moduli space, we use motivic Bialynicki-Birula decompositions associated to a scaling action with variation of stability and wall-crossing for moduli spaces of rank 2 pairs, which occur in the fixed locus of this action.
We take another approach to Hitchin's strategy of computing the cohomology of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles by localization with respect to the circle-action. Our computation is done in the dimensional completion of the Grothendieck ring of varieties and starts by describing the classes of moduli stacks of chains rather than their coarse moduli spaces. As an application we show that the n-torsion of the Jacobian acts trivially on the middle dimensional cohomology of the moduli space of twisted SL_n-Higgs-bundles of degree coprime to n and we give an explicit formula for the motive of the modu…
We define and study the motive of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over a smooth projective curve in Voevodsky's category of motives. We prove that this motive can be written as a homotopy colimit of motives of smooth projective Quot schemes of torsion quotients of sums of line bundles on the curve. When working with rational coefficients, we prove that the motive of the stack of bundles lies in the localising tensor subcategory generated by the motive of the curve, using Bialynicki-Birula decompositions of these Quot schemes. We conjecture a formula for the motive o…
For any smooth projective moduli space $M$ of Gieseker stable sheaves on a complex projective K3 surface (or an abelian surface) S, we prove that the Chow motive $\mathfrak{h}(M)$ becomes a direct summand of a motive $\bigoplus \mathfrak{h}(S^{k_i})(n_i)$ with $k_i\leq \dim(M)$. The result implies that finite dimensionality of $\mathfrak{h}(M)$ follows from finite dimensionality of $\mathfrak{h}(S)$. The technique also applies to moduli spaces of twisted sheaves and to moduli spaces of stable objects in ${\rm D}^{\rm b}(S,α)$ for a Brauer class $α\in{\rm Br}(S)$. In a similar vein, we investig…
We study the motive of the moduli spaces of semistable rank two vector bundles over an algebraic curve. When the degree is odd the moduli space is a smooth projective variety, we obtain the absolute Hodge motive of this, and in particular the Hodge-Poincare polynomial. When the degree is even the moduli space is a singular projective variety, we compute pure Euler characteristics and show that only two weights can occur in each cohomology group, we also see that its cohomology is pure up to a certain degree. As a by-product we obtain the isogeny type of some intermediate jacobians of the modul…
We propose a conjecture on special values of $ L $-functions in a function field context with positive characteristic coefficients. For $ M $ a uniformizable $ t $-motive with everywhere good reduction we conjecture a relation between the value of the Goss $ L $-function $ L(M^\vee, s) $ at $ s = 0 $ and the uniformization of the abelian $ t $-module associated with $ M $. When $ M $ is a power of the Carlitz $ t $-motive the conjecture specializes to a theorem of Anderson and Thakur on Carlitz zeta values. Beyond this case we present numerical evidence.
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values \cite{MDZF} associated to a number $K$ field and a cone $C$. In this paper we construct explicitly non-trivial examples of mixed Tate motives over the ring of integers in $K$, for a real quadratic number field $K$ and a particular cone C. The period of such a motive is a multiple Dedekind zeta values at $(s_1,s_2)=(1,2)$, associated to the pair $(K;C)$, times a nonzero element of $K$.
This talk is dedicated to various aspects of Mirror Symmetry. It summarizes some of the mathematical developments that took place since M. Kontsevich's report at the Zürich ICM and provides an extensive, although not exhaustive, bibliography.
Like the Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface who played an important role in the study of representation of the fundamental group of the surface, the parabolic Higgs bundles play also their importance in the study of the fundamental group but of punctured surface. In this paper, we shall give an algorithm to calculate the (virtual) motive (i.e in a suitable Grothendieck ring) of the moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles of fixed rank, fixed degree and fixed parabolic structure, using localization with respect to the circle action.
The moduli space of twisted stable maps into the stack $B(\Z/m\Z)^2$ carries a natural $S_n$-action and so its cohomology may be decomposed into irreducible $S_n$-representations. Working over $\Spec \Z[1/m]$ we show that the alternating part of the cohomology of one of its connected components is exactly the cohomology associated to cusp forms for $Γ(m)$. In particular this offers an alternative to Scholl's construction of the Chow motive associated to such cusp forms. This answers in the affirmative a question of Manin on whether one can replace the Kuga-Sato varieties used by Scholl with so…
The algebra of big zeta values we introduce in this paper is an intermediate object between multiple zeta values and periods of the multiple zeta motive. It consists of number series generalizing multiple zeta values, the simplest examples, which are not multiple zeta series, are Tornheim sums. We show that convergent big zeta values are periods of the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero on one hand and multiple zeta values on the other hand. It gives an alternative way to prove that any such period may be expressed as a rational linear combination of multiple zeta values and a simple …
This survey article is the written version of two talks given at the Journées X-UPS 2019 "Périodes et transcendance" at École polytechnique. We give a gentle introduction to the study of multiple zeta values, from Euler's solution to the Basel problem to modern Galois theoretic tools. We emphasize the role of the theory of motives which conjecturally controls the structure of the algebra of multiple zeta values.
We prove that the moduli space of stable n-pointed curves of genus one and the projector associated to the alternating representation of the symmetric group on n letters define (for n>1) the Chow motive corresponding to cusp forms of weight n+1 for SL(2,Z). This provides an alternative (in level one) to the construction of Scholl.
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over $\mathbb C$. Fix $n\geq 1$, $d\in {\mathbb Z}$. A pair $(E,ϕ)$ over $C$ consists of an algebraic vector bundle $E$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$ and a section $ϕ\in H^0(E)$. There is a concept of stability for pairs which depends on a real parameter $τ$. Let ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ be the moduli space of $τ$-polystable pairs of rank $n$ and degree $d$ over $C$. Here we prove that for a generic curve $C$, the moduli space ${\mathfrak M}_τ(n,d)$ satisfies the Hodge Conjecture for $n \leq 4$. For obtaining this, we prove first that…
The integral $t$-motivic cohomology and the class module of a (rigid analytically trivial) Anderson $t$-motive were introduced by the first author in [Gaz22b]. This paper is devoted to their determination in the particular case of tensor powers of the Carlitz $t$-motive, namely, the function field counterpart $\underline{A}(n)$ of Tate twists $\mathbb{Z}(n)$. We find out that these modules are in relation with fundamental objects of function field arithmetic: integral $t$-motivic cohomology governs linear relations among Carlitz polylogarithms, its torsion is expressed in terms of the denomina…
The appearance of multiple zeta values in anomalous dimensions and $β$-functions of renormalizable quantum field theories has given evidence towards a motivic interpretation of these renormalization group functions. In this paper we start to hunt the motive, restricting our attention to a subclass of graphs in four dimensional scalar field theory which give scheme independent contributions to the above functions.
Using analytic torsion associated to stable bundles, we introduce zeta functions for compact Riemann surfaces. To justify the well-definedness, we analyze the degenerations of analytic torsions at the boundaries of the moduli spaces, the singularities of analytic torsions at Brill-Noether loci, and the asymptotic behaviors of analytic torsions with respect to the degree. These new yet intrinsic zetas, both abelian and non-abelian, are expected to play key roles to understand global analysis and geometry of Riemann surfaces, such as the Tamagawa number conjecture for Riemann surfaces, searched …
We will introduce a regularization for $p$-adic multiple zeta values and show that the generalized double shuffle relations hold. This settles a question raised by Deligne, given as a project in Arizona winter school 2002. Our approach is to use the theory of Coleman functions on the moduli space of genus zero curves with marked points and its compactification. The main ingredients are the analytic continuation of Coleman functions to the normal bundle of divisors at infinity and definition of a special tangential base point on the moduli space.
In this paper we prove a conjecture due to Goncharov and Manin which states that the periods of the moduli spaces $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ of Riemann spheres with $n$ marked points are multiple zeta values. In order to do this, we introduce a differential algebra of multiple polylogarithms on $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$, and prove that it is closed under the operation of taking primitives. The main idea is to apply a version of Stokes' formula iteratively, and to exploit the geometry of the moduli spaces to reduce each period integral to multiple zeta values. We also give a geometric interpretation of th…
Let $G$ be a split connected semisimple group over a field. We give a conjectural formula for the motive of the stack of $G$-bundles over a curve $C$, in terms of special values of the motivic zeta function of $C$. The formula is true if $C=\pp^1$ or $G=\sln$. If $k=\cc$, upon applying the Poincaré or Serre characteristic, the formula reduces to results of Teleman and Atiyah-Bott on the gauge group. If $k=\ffq$, upon applying the counting measure, it reduces to the fact that the Tamagawa number of $G$ over the function field of $C$ is $|π_1(G)|$.
In this paper we study and relate the non-abelian zeta functions introduced by Weng and invariants of the moduli spaces of arbitrary rank stable pairs over curves. We prove a wall-crossing formula for the latter invariants and obtain an explicit formula for these invariants in terms of the motive of a curve. Previously, formulas for these invariants were known only for rank 2 due to Thaddeus and for rank 3 due to Muñoz. Using these results we obtain an explicit formula for the non-abelian zeta functions, we check the uniformity conjecture by Weng for the ranks 2 and 3, and we prove the countin…
This paper proves the Beilinson-Soul{é} vanishing conjecture for motives attached to the moduli spaces of curves of genus 0 with n marked points. As part of the proof, it is also proved that these motives are mixed Tate. As a consequence of Levine's work, one obtains then well defined categories of mixed Tate motives over the moduli spaces of curves . It is shown that morphisms between moduli spaces forgetting marked points and embedding as boundary components induce functors between those categories and how tangential bases points fit in these functorialities. Tannakian formalism attaches gro…
Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In this article we develop their theory regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and local shtukas. The later are the analog of p-divisible groups. We investigate which pure t-motives are semisimple, that is, isogenous to direct sums of simple ones. We give examples for pure t-motives which are not semisimple. Over finite fields the semisimplicity is equivalent to the semisimplicity of the endomor…
This paper intends to give a mathematical explanation for results on the zeta-function of some families of varieties recently obtained in the context of Mirror Symmetry. In doing so, we obtain concrete and explicit examples for some results recently used in algorithms to count points on smooth hypersurfaces in P^n. In particular, we extend the monomial-motive correspondence of Kadir and Yui and we give explicit solutions to the p-adic Picard-Fuchs equation associated with monomial deformations of Fermat hypersurfaces. As a by-product we obtain Poincare Duality for the Rigid cohomology of certa…
We consider certain families of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and their mirror partners constructed from Fermat hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-spaces. Our focus is the topological mirror symmetry. There are at least three known ingredients to describe the topological mirror symmetry, namely, integral vertices in reflexive polytopes, monomials in graded polynomial rings (with some group actions), and periods (and Picard-Fuchs differential equations). In this paper we will introduce Fermat motives associated to these Calabi-Yau orbifolds and then use them to give motivic interpretation of the top…
This is a sequel to our previous paper (joint with Furusho). It will give a more natural framework for constructing elements in the Hopf algebra of framed mixed Tate motives according to Bloch and Kriz. This framework allows us to extend our previous results to interpret all multiple zeta values (including the divergent ones) and the multiple polylogarithms in one variable as elements of this Hopf algebra. It implies that the pro-unipotent completion of the torsor of paths on projective line minus three points, is a mixed Tate motive in the sense of Bloch-Kriz. Also It allows us to interpret t…
We determine the type of the zeta functions and the range of the dimensions of the moduli spaces of finite flat models of two-dimensional local Galois representations over finite fields. This gives a generalization of Raynaud's theorem on the uniqueness of finite flat models in low ramifications.
Given a curve over a finite field, we compute the number of stable bundles of not necessarily coprime rank and degree over it. We apply this result to compute the virtual Poincare polynomials of the moduli spaces of stable bundles over a curve. A similar formula for the virtual Hodge polynomials and motives is conjectured.
In this paper we construct a Q-linear tannakian category MEM_1 of universal mixed elliptic motives over the moduli space M_{1,1} of elliptic curves. It contains MTM, the category of mixed Tate motives unramified over the integers. Each object of MEM_1 is an object of MTM endowed with an action of SL_2(Z) that is compatible with its structure. Universal mixed elliptic motives can be thought of as motivic local systems over M_{1,1} whose fiber over the tangential base point d/dq at the cusp is a mixed Tate motive. The basic structure of the tannakian fundamental group of MEM is determined and th…
