Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In this article we develop their theory regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and local shtukas. The later are the analog of p-divisible groups. We investigate which pure t-motives are semisimple, that is, isogenous to direct sums of simple ones. We give examples for pure t-motives which are not semisimple. Over finite fields the semisimplicity is equivalent to the semisimplicity of the endomorphism algebra, but also this fails over infinite fields. Still over finite fields we study the endomorphism rings of pure t-motives and obtain answers which are similar to Tate's famous results for abelian varieties. Finally we clarify the relation of pure t-motives to the abelian τ-sheaves introduced by the second author for the purpose of constructing moduli spaces. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories.
Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In order to construct moduli spaces for pure t-motives the second author has previously introduced the concept of abelian τ-sheaf. In this article we clarify the relation between pure t-motives and abelian τ-sheaves. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories. Furthermore, we develop the elementary theory of both structures regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and loca…
Analogy between Anderson T-motives and abelian varieties with multiplication by an imaginary quadratic field (MIQF) is a source of 2 results: 1. A description of abelian varieties with MIQF of dimension $r$ and signature $(n, r-n)$ in terms of "lattices" of dimension $r$ in $\Bbb C^n$; 2. A construction of exterior powers of abelian varieties with MIQF having $n=1$.
We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.
As a generalization of Drinfeld modules, Greg Anderson introduced abelian t-modules and t-motives over a perfect field. In this article we study relative versions of these over rings. We investigate isogenies among them. Our main results state that every isogeny possesses a dual isogeny in the opposite direction, and that a morphism between abelian t-modules is an isogeny if and only if the corresponding morphism between their associated t-motives is an isogeny. We also study torsion submodules of abelian t-modules which in general are non-reduced group schemes. They can be obtained from the a…
In the arithmetic of function fields Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves take on in the arithmetic of number fields. As higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogues of abelian varieties, G. Anderson introduced pure t-motives. In this article we study the arithmetic of the later. We investigate which pure t-motives are semisimple, that is, isogenous to direct sums of simple ones. We give examples for pure t-motives which are not semisimple. Over finite fields the semisimplicity is equivalent to the semisimplicity of the endomorphism al…
Let $M$ be a T-motive. We introduce the notion of duality for $M$. Main results of the paper (we consider uniformizable $M$ over $F_q[T]$ of rank $r$, dimension $n$, whose nilpotent operator $N$ is 0): 1. Algebraic duality implies analytic duality (Theorem 5). Explicitly, this means that the lattice of the dual of $M$ is the dual of the lattice of $M$, i.e. the transposed of a Siegel matrix of $M$ is a Siegel matrix of the dual of $M$. 2. Let $n=r-1$. There is a 1 -- 1 correspondence between pure T-motives (all they are uniformizable), and lattices of rank $r$ in $C^n$ having dual (Corollary 8…
We consider Anderson t-motives $M$ of dimension 2 and rank 4 defined by some simple explicit equations parameterized by $2\times2$ matrices. We use methods of explicit calculation of $h^1(M)$ -- the dimension of their cohomology group $H^1(M)$ ( = the dimension of the lattice of their dual t-motive $M'$) developed in our earlier paper. We calculate $h^1(M)$ for $M$ defined by all matrices having 0 on the diagonal, and by some other matrices. These methods permit to make analogous calculations for most (probably all) t-motives. $h^1$ of all Anderson t-motives $M$ under consideration satisfy the…
Let $M$ be an Anderson t-motive of dimension $n$ and rank $r$. Associated are two $\Bbb F_q[T]$-modules $H^1(M)$, $H_1(M)$ of dimensions $h^1(M)$, $h_1(M)\le r$ - analogs of $H^1(A,\Bbb Z)$, $H_1(A,\Bbb Z)$ for an abelian variety $A$. There is a theorem (Anderson): $h^1(M)=r \iff h_1(M)=r$; in this case $M$ is called uniformizable. It is natural to expect that always $h^1(M)=h_1(M)$. Nevertheless, we explicitly construct a counterexample. Further, we answer a question of D.Goss: is it possible that two Anderson t-motives that differ only by a nilpotent operator $N$ are of different uniformizab…
Abelian $t$-modules and the dual notion of $t$-motives were introduced by Anderson as a generalization of Drinfeld modules. For such Anderson defined and studied the important concept of uniformizability. It is an interesting question, and the main objective of the present article to see how uniformizability behaves in families. Since uniformizability is an analytic notion, we have to work with families over a rigid analytic base. We provide many basic results, and in fact a large part of this article concentrates on laying foundations for studying the above question. Building on these, we obt…
For an Anderson A-motive over a discretely valued field whose residue field has A-characteristic ε, we prove a criterion for good reduction in terms of its associated local shtuka at ε. This yields a criterion for good reduction of Drinfeld modules. Our criterion is the function-field analog of Grothendieck's and de Jong's criterion for good reduction of an abelian variety over a discretely valued field with residue characteristic p in terms of its associated p-divisible group.
We propose a conjecture on special values of $ L $-functions in a function field context with positive characteristic coefficients. For $ M $ a uniformizable $ t $-motive with everywhere good reduction we conjecture a relation between the value of the Goss $ L $-function $ L(M^\vee, s) $ at $ s = 0 $ and the uniformization of the abelian $ t $-module associated with $ M $. When $ M $ is a power of the Carlitz $ t $-motive the conjecture specializes to a theorem of Anderson and Thakur on Carlitz zeta values. Beyond this case we present numerical evidence.
We study the passage from Drinfeld-A'-modules to Drinfeld-A-modules for a given finite flat inclusion A \subset A'. We show that this defines a morphism from the moduli space of Drinfeld-A'-modules to the moduli space of Drinfeld-A-modules which is proper but in general not representable. For Drinfeld-Anderson shtuka and abelian sheaves instead of Drinfeld modules we obtain the same results.
We develop the analog of crystalline Dieudonné theory for p-divisible groups in the arithmetic of function fields. In our theory p-divisible groups are replaced by divisible local Anderson modules, and Dieudonné modules are replaced by local shtukas. We show that the categories of divisible local Anderson modules and of effective local shtukas are anti-equivalent over arbitrary base schemes. We also clarify their relation with formal Lie groups and with global objects like Drinfeld modules, Anderson's abelian t-modules and t-motives, and Drinfeld shtukas. Moreover, we discuss the existence of …
In this article we introduce and study a motivic category in the arithmetic of function fields, namely the category of motives over an algebraic closure $L$ of a finite field with coefficients in a global function field over this finite field. It is semi-simple, non-neutral Tannakian and possesses all the expected fiber functors. This category generalizes the previous construction due to Anderson and is more relevant for applications to the theory of $G$-Shtukas, such as formulating the analog of the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture over function fields. We further develop the analogy with the ca…
We construct the t-motivic mixed Carlitz zeta category over $\F_q(t)$ and show that it contains all the (mixed) t-motives with Carlitz-Thakur multi-zeta values as periods constructed by Anderson and Thakur. Our construction is canonical and our category is Tannakian and neutral and every object is equipped with a weight filtration whose graded pieces are Carlitz motives over $\F_q(t)$. For any finite separable extension L/\F_q(t) we show that existence of a similar category over $L$ is a consequence of a version of a conjecture of L. Taelman. Along the way we also prove the existence of the ca…
The integral $t$-motivic cohomology and the class module of a (rigid analytically trivial) Anderson $t$-motive were introduced by the first author in [Gaz22b]. This paper is devoted to their determination in the particular case of tensor powers of the Carlitz $t$-motive, namely, the function field counterpart $\underline{A}(n)$ of Tate twists $\mathbb{Z}(n)$. We find out that these modules are in relation with fundamental objects of function field arithmetic: integral $t$-motivic cohomology governs linear relations among Carlitz polylogarithms, its torsion is expressed in terms of the denomina…
Elliptic sheaves (which are related to Drinfeld modules) were introduced by Drinfeld and further studied by Laumon--Rapoport--Stuhler and others. They can be viewed as function field analogues of elliptic curves and hence are objects "of dimension 1". Their higher dimensional generalisations are called abelian sheaves. In the analogy between function fields and number fields, abelian sheaves are counterparts of abelian varieties. In this article we study the moduli spaces of abelian sheaves and prove that they are algebraic stacks. We further transfer results of Cerednik--Drinfeld and Rapoport…
In 1997 Richard Pink has clarified the concept of Hodge structures over function fields in positive characteristic, which today are called Hodge-Pink structures. They form a neutral Tannakian category over the underlying function field. He has defined Hodge realization functors from the uniformizable abelian $t$-modules and $t$-motives of Greg Anderson to Hodge-Pink structures. This allows one to associate with each uniformizable $t$-motive a Hodge-Pink group, analogous to the Mumford-Tate group of a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers. It further enabled Pink to prove the analo…
This thesis establishes a geometric approach to the de Rham realization of the polylogarithm. As a central result we construct the logarithm sheaves of rational abelian schemes in terms of the birigidified Poincaré bundle with universal integrable connection on the product of the abelian scheme and the universal vectorial extension of its dual. This is achieved essentially by restricting the mentioned data of the Poincaré bundle along the infinitesimal neighborhoods of the zero section of the universal extension. We also clarify how these constructions naturally express within the language of …
We review the analog of Fontaine's theory of crystalline $p$-adic Galois representations and their classification by weakly admissible filtered isocrystals in the arithmetic of function fields over a finite field. There crystalline Galois representations are replaced by the Tate modules of so-called local shtukas. We prove that the Tate module functor is fully faithful. In addition to this étale realization of a local shtuka we discuss also the de Rham and the crystalline cohomology realizations and construct comparison isomorphisms between these realizations. We explain how local shtukas and …
