This is a sequel to our previous paper (joint with Furusho). It will give a more natural framework for constructing elements in the Hopf algebra of framed mixed Tate motives according to Bloch and Kriz. This framework allows us to extend our previous results to interpret all multiple zeta values (including the divergent ones) and the multiple polylogarithms in one variable as elements of this Hopf algebra. It implies that the pro-unipotent completion of the torsor of paths on projective line minus three points, is a mixed Tate motive in the sense of Bloch-Kriz. Also It allows us to interpret the multiple logarithm as an element of this Hopf algebra as long as the products of consecutive arguments are not 1.
Following the work of Gangl, Goncharov and Levin in [GGL], we will give a combinatorial framework for motivic study of iterated integrals on the affine line. We will show that under a certain genericity condition these combinatorial objects yield to elements in the motivic Hopf algebra constructed in Bloch-Kriz [BK]. It will be shown that the Hodge realization of these elements coincides with the Hodge structure induced from the fundamental torsor of path of punctured affine line.
Using iterated vanishing cycles and convolution, we prove a motivic version of a conjecture of Steenbrink concerning the spectrum of hypersurface singularities
We show that the motivic vanishing cycles introduced by J. Denef and F. Loeser give rise to a motivic measure on the Grothendieck ring of varieties over the affine line. We discuss the relation of this motivic measure to the motivic measure we constructed earlier using categories of matrix factorizations.
We prove a mixed characteristic analog of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum Conjecture for p-adic motivic cohomology. It gives a description, in the stable range, of p-adic motivic cohomology (defined using algebraic cycles) in terms of differential forms. This generalizes a result of Geisser from small Tate twists to all twists and uses as a critical new ingredient the comparison theorem between syntomic complexes and p-adic nearby cycles proved recently in Colmez-Niziol.
We introduce a family of periods of mixed Tate motives called dissection polylogarithms, that are indexed by combinatorial objects called dissection diagrams. The motivic coproduct on the former is encoded by a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure on the latter. This generalizes Goncharov's formula for the motivic coproduct on (generic) iterated integrals. Our main tool is the study of the relative cohomology group corresponding to a bi-arrangement of hyperplanes.
We prove relations between fractional linear cycles in Bloch's integral cubical higher Chow complex in codimension two of number fields, which correspond to functional equations of the dilogarithm. These relations suffice, as we shall demonstrate with a few examples, to write down enough relations in Bloch's integral higher Chow group CH^2(F,3) for certain number fields F to detect torsion cycles. Using the regulator map to Deligne cohomology, one can check the non-triviality of the torsion cycles thus obtained. Using this combination of methods, we obtain explicit higher Chow cycles generatin…
We extend Ayoub's formalism of motivic nearby cycle functor to the $\infty$-categorical level, and prove some desired cohomological properties by relating the motivic nearby cycle functor to the notion of local acyclicity in motivic homotopy.
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
We study polynomials with complex coefficients which are nondegenerate in two senses, one of Kouchnirenko and the other with respect to its Newton polyhedron, through data on contact loci and motivic nearby cycles. Introducing an explicit description of these quantities we can answer in part to questions concerning the motivic nearby cycles of restriction functions and the integral identity conjecture in the context of Newton nondegenerate polynomials. Furthermore, in the nondegeneracy in the sense of Kouchnirenko, we give calculations on cohomology groups of the contact loci.
We define motivic iterated integrals on the affine line, and give a simple proof of the formula for the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of they make. We show that it encodes the group law in the automorphism group of certain non-commutative variety. We relate the coproduct with the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted planar trivalent trees - a planar decorated version of the Hopf algebra defined by Connes and Kreimer. As an application we derive explicit formulas for the coproduct in the motivic multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra. We give a criteria for a motivic iterated integral…
We introduce the notion of dR-absolutely special subvarieties in motivic variations of Hodge structure as special subvarieties cut out by (de Rham-)absolute Hodge cycles and conjecture that all special subvarieties are dR-absolutely special. This is implied by Deligne's conjecture that all Hodge cycles are absolute Hodge cycles, but is a much weaker conjecture. We prove our conjecture for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition introduced by Klingler-Otwinowska-Urbanik. We study applications to typical respectively atypical intersections and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-bialgebraic subvarie…
We introduce a Bredon motivic cohomology theory for smooth schemes defined over a field and equipped with an action by a finite group. These cohomology groups are defined for finite dimensional representations as the hypercohomology of complexes of equivariant correspondences in the equivariant Nisnevich topology. We generalize the theory of presheaves with transfers to the equivariant setting and prove a Cancellation Theorem.
For $k$ a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G/k$ a split reductive group with $p$ a non-torsion prime for $G,$ we compute the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the geometric classifying space $BG_{(r)}$, where $G_{(r)}$ is the $r$th Frobenius kernel of $G.$ Our main tool is a motivic version of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, due to Krishna. For a flat affine group scheme $G/k$ of finite type, we define a cycle class map from the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the classifying space $BG$ to the mod $p$ étale motivic cohomology of the classifying stack $\mathcal{B}G.$ This also gives …
We construct a motivic spectral sequence for the relative homotopy invariant K-theory of a closed immersion of schemes $D \subset X$. The $E_2$-terms of this spectral sequence are the cdh-hypercohomology of a complex of equi-dimensional cycles. Using this spectral sequence, we obtain a cycle class map from the relative motivic cohomology group of 0-cycles to the relative homotopy invariant K-theory. For a smooth scheme $X$ and a divisor $D \subset X$, we construct a canonical homomorphism from the Chow groups with modulus $\CH^i(X|D)$ to the relative motivic cohomology groups $H^{2i}(X|D, \Z(i…
In this paper, we study the combinatorics of a subcomplex of the Bloch-Kriz cycle complex [4] used to construct the category of mixed Tate motives. The algebraic cycles we consider properly contain the subalgebra of cycles that correspond to multiple logarithms (as defined in [12]). We associate an algebra of graphs to our subalgebra of algebraic cycles. We give a purely graphical criterion for admissibilty. We show that sums of bivalent graphs correspond to coboundary elements of the algebraic cycle complex. Finally, we compute the Hodge realization for an infinite family of algebraic cycles …
In this paper we establish a precise comparison between vanishing cycles and the singularity category of Landau-Ginzburg models over a complete discrete valuation ring. By using noncommutative motives, we first construct a motivic $\ell$-adic realization functor for dg-categories. Our main result, then asserts that, given a Landau-Ginzburg model over a complete discrete valuation ring with potential induced by a uniformizer, the $\ell$-adic realization of its singularity category is given by the inertia-invariant part of vanishing cohomology. We also prove a functorial and $\infty$-categorical…
We make explicit Serre's generalization of the Sato-Tate conjecture for motives, by expressing the construction in terms of fiber functors from the motivic category of absolute Hodge cycles into a suitable category of Hodge structures of odd weight. This extends the case of abelian varietes, which we treated in a previous paper. That description was used by Fite--Kedlaya--Rotger--Sutherland to classify Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces; the present description is used by Fite--Kedlaya--Sutherland to make a similar classification for certain motives of weight 3. We also give conditions under…
The goal of this article is to try understand where Hodge cycles on a singular complex projective variety X come from. As a first step we consider Hodge cycles on the maximal pure quotient $H^{2p}(X)/W_{2p-1}$, and introduce a class of algebraic cycles that we call homologically Cartier, that should conjecturally describe all such Hodge cycles. Secondly, given a singular complex projective variety $X$, we show that there is a cycle map from motivic cohomology group $H^{2p}_M(X,Q(p))$ to the space of weight 2p Hodge cycles in $H^{2p}(X,Q)$. We conjecture that this is surjective when X is define…
This paper is a continuation of the authors article "Enlargements of schemes" (Log. Anal.1 (2007), no. 1, 1-60) We mainly study the behaviour of etale cohomology, algebraic cycles and motives under ultraproducts respectively enlargements. The main motivation for that is to find methods to transfer statements about etale cohomology and algebraic cycles from characteristic zero to positive characteristic and vice versa. We give one application to the independence of $l$ of Betti numbers in etale cohomology and applications to the complexity of algebraic cycles.
This paper is for the proceedings of the Chen-Chow Conference held in Tianjin, China in October 2000. The goal of the paper is to produce and survey evidence for a connection between Chen's work on iterated integrals on the one hand, and algebraic cycles and motives on the other. The paper is expository, and begins with an introduction to Chen's work. Topics covered include loop space de Rham theorems; iterated integrals of currents; the works of Carlson-Clemmens-Morgan and Bruno Harris on periods of mixed Hodge structures on homotopy groups and algebraic cycles; the cobar construction, algebr…
We reformulate the construction of Kontsevich's completion and use Lawson homology to define many new motivic invariants. We show that the dimensions of subspaces generated by algebraic cycles of the cohomology groups of two $K$-equivalent varieties are the same, which implies that several conjectures of algebraic cycles are $K$-statements. We define stringy functions which enable us to ask stringy Grothendieck standard conjecture and stringy Hodge conjecture. We prove a projective bundle theorem in morphic cohomology for trivial bundles over any normal quasi-projective varieties.
We construct classes in the motivic cohomology of certain 1-parameter families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric Fano n-folds, with applications to local mirror symmetry (growth of genus 0 instanton numbers) and inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations. In the case where the family is classically modular the classes are related to Belinson's Eisenstein symbol; the Abel-Jacobi map (or rational regulator) is computed in this paper for both kinds of cycles. For the "modular toric" families where the cycles essentially coincide, we obtain a motivic (and computationally effective) explanation of a p…
Let $U$ be a smooth scheme over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb K$ of characteristic zero and $f:U\to{\mathbb A}^1$ a regular function, and write $X=$Crit$(f)$, as a closed subscheme of $U$. The motivic vanishing cycle $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$ is an element of the $\hatμ$-equivariant motivic Grothendieck ring ${\mathcal M}^{\hatμ}_X$ defined by Denef and Loeser math.AG/0006050 and Looijenga math.AG/0006220, and used in Kontsevich and Soibelman's theory of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants, arXiv:0811.2435. We prove three main results: (a) $MF_{U,f}^ϕ$ depends only on the third-order thickenings $…
We present a formal scheme based cycle model for the motivic cohomology of the fat points defined by the truncated polynomial rings $k[t]/(t^m)$ with $m \geq 2$, in one variable over a field $k$. We compute their Milnor range cycle class groups when the field has sufficiently many elements. With some aids from rigid analytic geometry and the Gersten conjecture for the Milnor $K$-theory resolved by M. Kerz, we prove that the resulting cycle class groups are isomorphic to the Milnor $K$-groups of the truncated polynomial rings, generalizing a theorem of Nesterenko-Suslin and Totaro.
In this paper, we prove a motivic enhancement of the theorem of the fixed part in Hodge theory due to Deligne. In the pure motivic case, this was done for the first time by André in [And96]. Our main result is an extension to the mixed case, which strengthens a result by Arapura [Ara13] and also provides an alternative and simpler proof, in the framework of Nori motives, of a result by Ayoub [Ayo14].
We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures. We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler c…
The aim of this work is to develop a theory parallel to that of motivic complexes based on cycles and correspondences with coefficients in quadratic forms. This framework is closer to the point of view of $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy than the original one envisioned by Beilinson and set up by Voevodsky.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over a field $k$, we define an equivariant version of the Voevodsky's motivic cobordism $MGL$. We show that this is an oriented cohomology theory with localization sequence on the category of smooth $G$-schemes and there is a natural transformation from this functor to the functor of equivariant motivic cohomology. We give several applications. In particular, we use this equivariant motivic cobordism to study the cobordism ring of the classifying spaces and the cycle class maps from the algebraic to the singular cohomology of such spaces. This theory of motivic…
In this paper we construct extensions of the Mixed Hodge structure on the fundamental group of a pointed algebraic curve. These extensions correspond to the regulator of certain explicit motivic cohomology cycles in the self product of the curve which were first constructed by Bloch and Beilinson. This leads to a new iterated integral expression for the regulator. Our result is a generalization of a result of Colombo's where she constructs the extension corresponding to a motivic cycle class in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve constructed by Collino. This is to appear in the Mathematical …
We construct a period regulator for motivic cohomology of an algebraic scheme over a subfield of the complex numbers. For the field of algebraic numbers we formulate a period conjecture for motivic cohomology by saying that this period regulator is surjective. Showing that a suitable Betti--de Rham realization of 1-motives is fully faithful we can verify this period conjecture in several cases. The divisibility properties of motivic cohomology imply that our conjecture is a neat generalization of the classical Grothendieck period conjecture for algebraic cycles on smooth and proper schemes. Th…
BY using Green-Griffiths' results on tangent spaces to algebraic cycles [4], we study the tangent space to $CH^{2}(X,1)$, where $X$ is a nonsingular projective curve over a field $k$ of characteristic $0$.
We introduce a new algebraic-cycle model for the motivic cohomology theory of truncated polynomials $k[t]/(t^m)$ in one variable. This approach uses ideas from the deformation theory and non-archimedean analysis, and is distinct from the approaches via cycles with modulus. We compute the groups in the Milnor range when the base field is of characteristic $0$, and prove that they give the Milnor $K$-groups of $k[t]/(t^m)$, whose relative part is the sum of the absolute Kähler differential forms.
In the case of Dynkin quivers we establish a formula for the Grothendieck class of a quiver cycle as the iterated residue of a certain rational function, for which we provide an explicit combinatorial construction. Moreover, we utilize a new definition of the double stable Grothendieck polynomials due to Rimanyi and Szenes in terms of iterated residues to exhibit how the computation of quiver coefficients can be reduced to computing coefficients in Laurent expansions of certain rational functions.
We construct indecomposable cycles in the motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\mathcal M}(A,{\mathbb Q}(2))$ where $A$ is an Abelian surface over a number field or the function field of a base. When $A$ is the self product of the universal elliptic curve over a modular curve, these cycles can be used to prove algebraicity results for values of higher Green's functions, similar to a conjecture of Gross, Kohnen and Zagier. We formulate a conjecture which relates our work with the recent work of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang on the conjecture of Gross-Kohnen-Zagier.
This is my habilitation thesis. As the tradition wants, I tried to give an introduction of my field of research. I post it on the ArXiv with the hope it can be useful to young researchers looking for a short and friendly text on cohomologies of algebraic varieties, periods, algebraic cycles and motives. I might one day find the energy to expand these notes and maybe translate them in English. In the meantime, please feel free to ask questions. The first sections of this text propose an introduction to the theory, I tried to present points of view and examples which are not always stressed in t…
This paper is an exposition of the completion of a modular group with respect to its inclusion into SL_2(Q) and the connection with the theory of modular forms and variations of mixed Hodge structure over modular curves. Among the goals of this paper are to give a context to Manin's iterated Shimura integrals (iterated integrals of modular forms) and to study relations in the "maximal Eisenstein quotient" of the completion of SL_2(Z). In particular, we use a computation of Terasoma to prove that Pollack's quadratic relations in the derivation Lie algebra of a rank two free Lie algebra lift to …
We compute the motivic nearby cycles of functions obtained by composition with a polynomial which is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron. Our result involves new convolution operators and generalized nearby cycles.
We construct an algebraic-cycle based model for the motivic cohomology on the category of schemes of finite type over a field, where schemes may admit arbitrary singularities and may be non-reduced. We show that our theory is functorial on the category, that it detects nilpotence, and that its restriction to the subcategory of smooth schemes agrees with the pre-existing motivic cohomology theory, which is the higher Chow theory of S. Bloch (Adv. Math., 1986). A few structures and applications are discussed.
