The appearance of multiple zeta values in anomalous dimensions and $β$-functions of renormalizable quantum field theories has given evidence towards a motivic interpretation of these renormalization group functions. In this paper we start to hunt the motive, restricting our attention to a subclass of graphs in four dimensional scalar field theory which give scheme independent contributions to the above functions.
The Feynman amplitude associated to a graph is a period of a certain motive. The sum of these motive classes over all connected graphs with no multiple edges or tadpoles and n vertices is defined in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This sum is shown to lie in the subring generated by the affine line. It follows from work of Belkale and Brosnan that motives of individual graphs do not lie in this subring.
We first recall the construction of the Chow motive modelling intersection cohomology of a proper surface and study its fundamental properties. Using Voevodsky's category of effective geometrical motives, we then study the motive of the exceptional divisor in a non-singular blow-up. If all geometric irreducible components of the divisor are of genus zero, then Voevodsky's formalism allows us to construct certain one-extensions of Chow motives, as canonical sub-quotients of the motive with compact support of the smooth part of the surface. Specializing to Hilbert--Blumenthal surfaces, we recove…
We consider algebraic groups GL_1(A), SL_1(A), where A is a division algebra of prime degree over a field F, and associated motives in the category of motivic complexes DM(F). Following an idea of Suslin, we relate motives of these groups to the motive of Voevodsky's simplicial scheme X, associated to the Severi-Brauer variety of A.
We define and compare two different definitions of Chow motives for Deligne-Mumford stacks, associated with two definitions of Chow rings. The main result we prove is that both categories of motives are equivalent to the usual category of motives of algebraic varieties, but the motives of a given stack associated with both theories are not isomorphic. We will also give some examples of motives associated with some alegbraic stacks.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
Let G be a finite connected graph. The Kirchhoff polynomial of G is a certain homogeneous polynomial whose degree is equal to the first betti number of G. These polynomials appear in the study of electrical circuits and in the evaluation of Feynman amplitudes. Motivated by work of D. Kreimer and D. J. Broadhurst associating multiple zeta values to certain Feynman integrals, Kontsevich conjectured that the number of zeros of a Kirchhoff polynomial over the field with q elements is always a polynomial function of q. We show that this conjecture is false by relating the schemes defined by Kirchho…
The motive associated to the second Symanzik polynomial of the double-box two-loop Feynman graph with generic masses and momenta is shown to be an elliptic curve.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a perfect field $k$ and $\cG$ a $G$-bundle over a scheme $X/k$. The main aim of this article is to study the motive associated with $\cG$, inside the Veovodsky Motivic categories. We consider the case that $\charakt k=0$ (resp. $\charakt k\geq 0$), the motive associated to $X$ is geometrically mixed Tate (resp. geometrically cellular) and $\cG$ is locally trivial for the Zariski (resp. étale) topology on $X$ and show that the motive of $\cG$ is geometrically mixed Tate. Moreover for a general $X$ we construct a nested filtration on the motive associa…
In this article we compute the motive associated to a cellular fibration $Γ$ over a smooth scheme $X$ inside Veovodsky's motivic categories. We implement this result to study the motive associated to a $G$-bundle, and additionally to study motives of varieties admitting a resolution of singularities by a tower of cellular fibrations (e.g. affine Schubert varieties in a twisted affine flag variety).
As a generalization of Drinfeld modules, Greg Anderson introduced abelian t-modules and t-motives over a perfect field. In this article we study relative versions of these over rings. We investigate isogenies among them. Our main results state that every isogeny possesses a dual isogeny in the opposite direction, and that a morphism between abelian t-modules is an isogeny if and only if the corresponding morphism between their associated t-motives is an isogeny. We also study torsion submodules of abelian t-modules which in general are non-reduced group schemes. They can be obtained from the a…
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values \cite{MDZF} associated to a number $K$ field and a cone $C$. In this paper we construct explicitly non-trivial examples of mixed Tate motives over the ring of integers in $K$, for a real quadratic number field $K$ and a particular cone C. The period of such a motive is a multiple Dedekind zeta values at $(s_1,s_2)=(1,2)$, associated to the pair $(K;C)$, times a nonzero element of $K$.
In a number of recent works [6, 7] the authors have introduced and studied a functor $\mathcal{F}_k$ which associates to each loose graph $Γ$ -which is similar to a graph, but where edges with $0$ or $1$ vertex are allowed - a $k$-scheme, such that $\mathcal{F}_k(Γ)$ is largely controlled by the combinatorics of $Γ$. Here, $k$ is a field, and we allow $k$ to be $\mathbb{F}_1$, the field with one element. For each finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, it is noted in [6] that any $\mathcal{F}_k(Γ)$ is polynomial-count, and the polynomial is independent of the choice of the field. In this note, we s…
We calculate the Beilinson regulators of motives associated to Fermat curves and express them by special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. As a result, we obtain surjectivity results of the regulator, which support the Beilinson conjecture on special values of L-functions.
In this paper, we construct an object of the abelian category of mixed Tate motive associated to multiple zeta values. as a consequence, we prove the inequality of the dimension of the vector space generated by multiple zeta values, which is conjectured by Zagier. (Some errors was corrected from the first version. Namely, we changed the definition of the boundary $\bold B^0$.)
For a simple, rigid vector bundle $F$ on a Calabi-Yau $3$-fold $Y$, we construct a symmetric obstruction theory on the Quot scheme $\textrm{Quot}_Y(F,n)$, and we solve the associated enumerative theory. We discuss the case of other $3$-folds. Exploiting the critical structure on $\textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^3}(\mathscr O^r,n)$, we construct a virtual motive (in the sense of Behrend-Bryan-Szendrői) for $\textrm{Quot}_Y(F,n)$ for an arbitrary vector bundle $F$ on a smooth $3$-fold $Y$. We compute the associated motivic partition function. We obtain new examples of higher rank (motivic) Donaldson-Th…
It oftens occurs that Taylor coefficients of (dimensionally regularized) Feynman amplitudes $I$ with rational parameters, expanded at an integral dimension $D= D_0$, are not only periods (Belkale, Brosnan, Bogner, Weinzierl) but actually multiple zeta values (Broadhurst, Kreimer). In order to determine, at least heuristically, whether this is the case in concrete instances, the philosophy of motives - more specifically, the theory of mixed Tate motives - suggests an arithmetic approach (Kontsevich): counting points of algebraic varieties related to $I$ modulo sufficiently many primes $p$ and c…
The purpose of this article is to clarify the question what makes motives $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance. we give construction of the stable model category of nilpotent invariant motives $\mathcal{M}ot_{\operatorname{dg}}^{\operatorname{nilp}}$ and define the nilpotent invriant motives associated with schemes and relative exact categories. For a noetherian scheme $X$, there are two kind of motives associated with $X$ in the homotopy category $\operatorname{Ho}(\mathcal{M}ot^{\operatorname{nilp}}_{\operatorname{dg}})$, namely $M_{\operatorname{nilp}}(X)$ and $M_{\operatorname{nilp}}'(X)$. I…
For a number field, we have a Tannaka category of mixed Tate motives at our disposal. We construct p-adic points of the associated Tannaka group by using p-adic Hodge theory. Extensions of two Tate objects yield functions on the Tannaka group, and we show that evaluation at our p-adic points is essentially given by the inverse of the Bloch-Kato exponential map.
Shimura and Taniyama proved that if $A$ is a potentially CM abelian variety over a number field $F$ with CM by a field $K$ linearly disjoint from F, then there is an algebraic Hecke character $λ_A$ of $K$ such that $L(A/F,s)=L(λ_A,s)$. We consider a certain converse to their result. Namely, let $A$ be a potentially CM abelian variety appearing as a factor of the Jacobian of a curve of the form $y^e=γx^f+δ$. Fix positive integers $a$ and $n$ such that $n/2 < a \leq n$. Under mild conditions on $e, f, γ, δ$, we construct a Chow motive $M$, defined over $F=\mathbb{Q}(γ,δ)$, such that $L(M/F,s)$ a…
We prove finiteness results for Tate--Shafarevich groups in degree 2 associated with 1--motives, rely them to Leopoldt's conjecture, and present an example of a semiabelian variety with an infinite Tate--Shafarevich group in degree 2. We also establish an arithmetic duality theorem for 1--motives over number fields which complements earlier results of Harari and Szamuely in this direction.
We describe Somekawa's K-group associated to a finite collection of semi-abelian varieties (or more general sheaves) in terms of the tensor product in Voevodsky's category of motives. While Somekawa's definition is based on Weil reciprocity, Voevodsky's category is based on homotopy invariance. We apply this to explicit descriptions of certain algebraic cycles.
We show that the l-adic realizations of certain Picard 1-motives associated to a G-Galois cover of smooth, projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field are G-cohomologically trivial, for all primes l. In the process, we generalize a well-known theorem of Nakajima on the Galois module structure of certain spaces of Kahler differentials associated to the top curve of the cover, assuming that the field of definition is of characteristic p. If the cover and the Picard 1-motive are defined over a finite field and if G is abelian, we compute the first Fitting ideal of each l-adic rea…
In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also …
We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.
The moduli space of twisted stable maps into the stack $B(\Z/m\Z)^2$ carries a natural $S_n$-action and so its cohomology may be decomposed into irreducible $S_n$-representations. Working over $\Spec \Z[1/m]$ we show that the alternating part of the cohomology of one of its connected components is exactly the cohomology associated to cusp forms for $Γ(m)$. In particular this offers an alternative to Scholl's construction of the Chow motive associated to such cusp forms. This answers in the affirmative a question of Manin on whether one can replace the Kuga-Sato varieties used by Scholl with so…
For any perfect field k a triangulated category of K-motives DK_(k) is constructed in the style of Voevodsky's construction of the category DM_(k). To each smooth k-variety X the K-motive is associated in the category DK_(k). Also, it is shown that K_n(X)=DK_(k)(M_K(X)[n],M_K(pt)), where K(X) is Quillen's K-theory of X.
Let $k$ be a number field. We describe the category of Laumon 1-isomotives over $k$ as the universal category in the sense of Nori associated with a quiver representation built out of smooth proper $k$-curves with two disjoint effective divisors and a notion of $H^1_\dR$ for such "curves with modulus". This result extends and relies on the theorem of J. Ayoub and L. Barbieri-Viale that describes Deligne's category of 1-isomotives in terms of Nori's Abelian category of motives.
We propose a refined version of the Beilinson-Bloch conjecture for the motive associated with a modular form of even weight. This conjecture relates the dimension of the image of the relevant p-adic Abel-Jacobi map to certain combinations of Heegner cycles on Kuga-Sato varieties. We prove theorems in the direction of the conjecture and, in doing so, obtain higher weight analogues of results for elliptic curves due to Darmon.
Given a smooth complex threefold X, we define the virtual motive of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case when X is Calabi-Yau, this gives a motivic refinement of the n-point degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariant of X. The key example is affine three-space, where the Hilbert scheme can be expressed as the critical locus of a regular function on a smooth variety, and its virtual motive is defined in terms of the Denef-Loeser motivic nearby fiber. A crucial technical result asserts that if a function is equivariant with respect to a suitable torus action, its motivic nearby fiber is …
We propose a conjecture on special values of $ L $-functions in a function field context with positive characteristic coefficients. For $ M $ a uniformizable $ t $-motive with everywhere good reduction we conjecture a relation between the value of the Goss $ L $-function $ L(M^\vee, s) $ at $ s = 0 $ and the uniformization of the abelian $ t $-module associated with $ M $. When $ M $ is a power of the Carlitz $ t $-motive the conjecture specializes to a theorem of Anderson and Thakur on Carlitz zeta values. Beyond this case we present numerical evidence.
Denef and Loeser defined a map from the Grothendieck ring of sets definable in pseudo-finite fields to the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives, thus enabling to apply any cohomological invariant to these sets. We generalize this to perfect, pseudo algebraically closed fields with pro-cyclic Galois group. In addition, we define some maps between different Grothendieck rings of definable sets which provide additional information, not contained in the associated motive. In particular we infer that the map of Denef-Loeser is not injective.
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
Given a 0-connective motivic spectrum $E \in SH(k)$ over a perfect field k, we determine $h_0$ of the associated motive $M E \in DM(k)$ in terms of $π_0 (E)$. Using this we show that if k has finite 2-étale cohomological dimension, then the functor M is conservative when restricted to the subcategory of compact spectra, and induces an injection on Picard groups. We extend the conservativity result to fields of finite virtual 2-étale cohomological dimension by considering what we call "real motives". As a by-product we reprove a variant of a rigidity Theorem of Röndings-Østvær.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ and field of fractions $K$ of characteristic 0. In this paper we consider a $K$-1-motive $M_K$ as in [Ra] and its associated Barsotti-Tate group. This last does not in general extend to a Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. However, with some assumptions, it extends to a logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. This follows from [Ra] and Kato's results on finite logarithmic group schemes. Once chosen a uniformizing parameter $π$ of $R$, any logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$ is describe…
We compute the motive of the variety of representations of the torus knot of type (m,n) into the affine groups $AGL_1$ and $AGL_2$ for an arbitrary field $k$. In the case that $k = F_q$ is a finite field this gives rise to the count of the number of points of the representation variety, while for $k = C$ this calculation returns the E-polynomial of the representation variety. We discuss the interplay between these two results in sight of Katz theorem that relates the point count polynomial with the E-polynomial. In particular, we shall show that several point count polynomials exist for these …
We study the hypergeometric functions associated to five one-parameter deformations of Delsarte K3 quartic hypersurfaces in projective space. We compute all of their Picard--Fuchs differential equations; we count points using Gauss sums and rewrite this in terms of finite field hypergeometric sums; then we match up each differential equation to a factor of the zeta function, and we write this in terms of global L-functions. This computation gives a complete, explicit description of the motives for these pencils in terms of hypergeometric motives.
We give a closed expression for the number of points over finite fields (or the motive) of the Lusztig nilpotent variety associated to any quiver, in terms of Kac's A-polynomials. When the quiver has 1-loops or oriented cycles, there are several possible variants of the Lusztig nilpotent variety, and we provide formulas for the point count of each. This involves nilpotent versions of the Kac A-polynomial, which we introduce and for which we give a closed formula similar to Hua's formula for the usual Kac A-polynomial. Finally we compute the number of points over a finite field of the various s…
Let X be a smooth scheme, Z a smooth closed subscheme, and U the open complement. Given any localizing and A1-homotopy invariant of dg categories E, we construct an associated Gysin triangle relating the value of E at the dg categories of perfect complexes of X, Z, and U. In the particular case where E is homotopy K-theory, this Gysin triangle yields a new proof of Quillen's localization theorem, which avoids the use of devissage. As a first application, we prove that the value of E at a smooth scheme belongs to the smallest (thick) triangulated subcategory generated by the values of E at the …
We construct motives over the rational numbers associated with symmetric power moments of Kloosterman sums, and prove that their L-functions extend meromorphically to the complex plane and satisfy a functional equation conjectured by Broadhurst and Roberts. Although the motives in question turn out to be "classical", we compute their Hodge numbers by means of the irregular Hodge filtration on their realizations as exponential mixed Hodge structures. We show that all Hodge numbers are either zero or one, which implies potential automorphy thanks to recent results of Patrikis and Taylor.
