Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ and field of fractions $K$ of characteristic 0. In this paper we consider a $K$-1-motive $M_K$ as in [Ra] and its associated Barsotti-Tate group. This last does not in general extend to a Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. However, with some assumptions, it extends to a logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. This follows from [Ra] and Kato's results on finite logarithmic group schemes. Once chosen a uniformizing parameter $π$ of $R$, any logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$ is described by two data $(G,N)$ where $G$ is a classical Barsotti-Tate group over $R$ and $N$ is a homomorphism of classical Barsotti-Tate groups. Moreover, if $R=W(k)$, $N$ induces a $W(k)$-homorphism ${\cal N}\colon M(G_k)\to M(G_k)$ on Dieudonné modules such that $F{\cal N}V={\cal N}$ and ${\cal N}^2=0$. In the first part of the paper we recall these constructions and we show how to relate $N$ with the ``geometric monodromy'' introduced by Raynaud. In the second part of the paper we give an explicit description of ${\cal N}$ in terms of additive extensions and integrals. In the last part of the paper we describe how to recover the logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group attached to a 1-motive from a concrete scheme endowed with a suitable logarithmic structure.
We study stacks of truncated Barsotti-Tate groups and the $G$-zips defined by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler. The latter occur naturally when studying truncated Barsotti-Tate groups of height 1 with additional structure. By studying objects over finite fields and their automorphisms we determine the zeta functions of these stacks. These zeta functions can be expressed in terms of the Weyl group of the reductive group $G$ and its action on the root system. The main ingredients are the classification of $G$-zips over algebraically closed fields and their automorphism groups by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler, …
We develop a descent criterion for $K$-linear abelian categories. Using recent advances in the Langlands correspondence due to Abe, we build a correspondence between certain rank 2 local systems and certain Barsotti-Tate groups on complete curves over a finite field. We conjecture that such Barsotti-Tate groups "come from" a family of fake elliptic curves. As an application of these ideas, we provide a criterion for being a Shimura curve over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Along the way, we formulate a conjecture on the field-of-coefficients of certain compatible systems.
We prove a portion of a conjecture of B. Conrad, F. Diamond, and R. Taylor, yielding some new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjectures, specifically, the modularity of certain potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. The proof follows the template of Wiles, Taylor-Wiles, and Breuil-Conrad-Diamond-Taylor, and relies on a detailed study of the descent, across tamely ramified extensions, of finite flat group schemes over the integers of a local field. This makes crucial use of the filtered ϕ_1-modules of C. Breuil.
Let $S$ be the spectrum of a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field of characteristic 0 and perfect residue field of characteristic $p\geq 3$. Let $G$ be a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level 1 over $S$. If ``$G$ is not too supersingular'', a condition that will be explicitly expressed in terms of the valuation of a certain determinant, we prove that we can canonically lift the kernel of the Frobenius endomorphism of its special fibre to a subgroup scheme of $G$, finite and flat over $S$. We call it the canonical subgroup of $G$.
Previous work of Kisin and Gee proves potential diagonalisability of two dimensional Barsotti-Tate representations of the Galois group of a finite extension $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this paper we build upon their work by relaxing the Barsotti-Tate condition to one we call pseudo-Barsotti-Tate (which means that for certain embeddings $κ:K \rightarrow \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p$ we allow the $κ$-Hodge-Tate weights to be contained in $[0,p]$ rather than $[0,1]$).
Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p) with perfect residue field, K the fraction field of R. Suppose G is a Barsotti-Tate group (p-divisible group) defined over K which acquires good reduction over a finite extension K' of K. We prove that there exists a constant c which depends on the absolute ramification index e(K'/Q_p) and the height of G such that G has good reduction over K if and only if G[p^c] can be extended to a finite flat group scheme over R. For abelian varieties with potentially good reduction, this result generalizes Grothendieck's p-adic Ner…
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension $d\ge 2$ whose completion is isomorphic to $C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]/(h)$, with $C(k)$ a Cohen ring with the same residue field $k$ as $R$ and with $h\in C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$ such that its reduction modulo $p$ does not belong to the ideal $(x_1^p,\ldots,x_d^p)+(x_1,\ldots,x_d)^{2p-2}$ of $k[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$. We extend a result of Vasiu-Zink (for $d=2$) to show that each Barsotti-Tate group over $\text{Frac}(R)$ which extends to every local ring of $\text{Spec}(R)$ of dimension $1$, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group ove…
Let F be a unramified finite extension of Qp and rhobar be an irreducible mod p two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of F. The aim of this article is the explicit computation of the Kisin variety parameterizing the Breuil-Kisin modules associated to certain families of potentially Barsotti-Tate deformations of rhobar. We prove that this variety is a finite union of products of P^1. Moreover, it appears as an explicit closed subvariety of P^1^[F:\Qp]. We define a stratification of the Kisin variety by locally closed subschemes and explain how the Kisin variety equipped wi…
Let $ \CO $ be the ring of integers of a non-Archimedean local field and $ π$ a fixed uniformizer of $ \CO $. We establish three main results. The first one states that the exterior powers of a $ π$-divisible $ \CO $-module scheme of dimension at most 1 over a field exist and commute with algebraic field extensions. The second one states that the exterior powers of a $p$-divisible group of dimension at most 1 over arbitrary base exist and commute with arbitrary base change. The third one states that when $ \CO $ has characteristic zero, then the exterior powers of $ π$-divisible groups with sc…
Let $D$ be a $p$-divisible group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $n_D$ be the smallest non-negative integer such that $D$ is determined by $D[p^{n_D}]$ within the class of $p$-divisible groups over $k$ of the same codimension $c$ and dimension $d$ as $D$. We study $n_D$, lifts of $D[p^m]$ to truncated Barsotti--Tate groups of level $m+1$ over $k$, and the numbers $γ_D(i):=\dim(\pmb{Aut}(D[p^i]))$. We show that $n_D\le cd$, $(γ_D(i+1)-γ_D(i))_{i\in\Bbb N}$ is a decreasing sequence in $\Bbb N$, for $cd>0$ we have $γ_D(1)<γ_D(2)<...<γ_D(n_D)$, and for $m\in\{1,…
Let F be an unramified extension of Qp. The first aim of this work is to develop a purely local method to compute the potentially Barsotti-Tate deformations rings with tame Galois type of irreducible two-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of F. We then apply our method in the particular case where F has degree 2 over Q_p and determine this way almost all these deformations rings. In this particular case, we observe a close relationship between the structure of these deformations rings and the geometry of the associated Kisin variety. As a corollary and still assuming that…
We explicitly construct and investigate a number of examples of $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$-equivariant formal group laws and complex-oriented spectra, including those coming from elliptic curves and $p$-divisible groups, as well as some other related examples.
Let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb Q\_p$ and $\barρ$ be an absolutely irreducible mod~$p$ $2$-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $t$ be a tame inertial type of $F$. We conjecture that the deformation space parametrizing the potentially Barsotti--Tate liftings of $\barρ$ having type $t$ depends only on the Kisin variety attached to the situation, enriched with its canonical embedding into $(\mathbb P^1)^f$ and its shape stratification. We give evidences towards this conjecture by proving that the Kisin variety determines the cardinality of the …
The formal deformation space of a supersingular Barsotti-Tate group over of dimension two equipped with an action of Z_{p^2} is known to be isomorphic to the formal spectrum of a power series ring in two variables. If one chooses an extra Z_{p^2}-linear endomorphism of the p-divisible group then the locus in the formal deformation space formed by those deformations for which the extra endomorphism lifts is a closed formal subscheme of codimension two. We give a complete description of the irreducible components of this formal subscheme, compute the multiplicities of these components, and compu…
According to a well-known theorem of Serre and Tate, the infinitesimal deformation theory of an abelian variety in positive characteristic is equivalent to the infinitesimal deformation theory of its Barsotti-Tate group. We extend this result to $1$-motives.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Let $c,d\in \mathbb{N}$ be such that $h=c+d>0$. Let $H$ be a $p$-divisible group of codimension $c$ and dimension $d$ over $k$. For $m\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$ let $H[p^m]=\ker([p^m]:H\rightarrow H)$. It is a finite commutative group scheme over $k$ of $p$ power order, called a Barsotti-Tate group of level $m$. We study a particular type of $p$-divisible groups $H_π$, where $π$ is a permutation on the set $\{1,2,\dots,h\}$. Let $(M,φ_π)$ be the Dieudonné module of $H_π$. Each $H_π$ is uniquely determined by $H_π[p]$ and by the fact th…
We establish a generalized Cassels-Tate dual exact sequence for 1-motives over global fields. We thereby extend the main theorem of [4] from abelian varieties to arbitrary 1-motives.
We prove finiteness results for Tate--Shafarevich groups in degree 2 associated with 1--motives, rely them to Leopoldt's conjecture, and present an example of a semiabelian variety with an infinite Tate--Shafarevich group in degree 2. We also establish an arithmetic duality theorem for 1--motives over number fields which complements earlier results of Harari and Szamuely in this direction.
We develop the theory of multiple polylogarithms from analytic, Hodge and motivic point of view. Define the category of mixed Tate motives over a ring of integers in a number field. Describe explicitly the multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 2$, and let $K$ be a finite totally ramified extension of $W(k)[\frac{1}{p}]$ of ramification degree $e$. We consider an unramified base ring $R_0$ over $W(k)$ satisfying certain conditions, and let $R = R_0\otimes_{W(k)}\mathcal{O}_K$. Examples of such $R$ include $R = \mathcal{O}_K[\![s_1, \ldots, s_d]\!]$ and $R = \mathcal{O}_K\langle t_1^{\pm 1}, \ldots, t_d^{\pm 1}\rangle$. We show that the generalization of Raynaud's theorem on extending $p$-divisible groups holds over the base ring $R$ when $e < p-1$, whereas it does not hold when $R = \…
We prove that the category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$ is spanned by the motivic fundamental group of $\Pro^1$ minus three points. We prove a conjecture by M. Hoffman which states that every multiple zeta value is a $\Q$-linear combination of $ζ(n_1,..., n_r)$ where $n_i\in \{2,3\}$.
We establish the group-theoretic classification of Sato-Tate groups of self-dual motives of weight 3 with rational coefficients and Hodge numbers h^{3,0} = h^{2,1} = h^{1,2} = h^{0,3} = 1. We then describe families of motives that realize some of these Sato-Tate groups, and provide numerical evidence supporting equidistribution. One of these families arises in the middle cohomology of certain Calabi-Yau threefolds appearing in the Dwork quintic pencil; for motives in this family, our evidence suggests that the Sato-Tate group is always equal to the full unitary symplectic group USp(4).
We establish the finiteness of the kernel and cokernel of the restriction map III^{i}(F,M) ---> III^{i}(K,M)^{G} for i=1 and 2, where M is a (Deligne) 1-motive over a global field F and K/F is a finite Galois extension of global fields with Galois group G.
We show that the statement analogous to the Mumford-Tate conjecture for abelian varieties holds for 1-motives on unipotent parts. This is done by comparing the unipotent part of the associated Hodge group and the unipotent part of the image of the absolute Galois group with the unipotent part of the motivic fundamental group. Contains an appendix by P. Deligne. In this version: Minor corrections here and there. The Main result about the image of the Galois representations is now enriched by an adelic statement.
We prove several duality theorems for the Galois and etale cohomology of 1-motives defined over local and global fields and establish a 12-term Poitou-Tate type exact sequence. The results give a common generalisation and sharpening of well-known theorems by Tate on abelian varieties as well as results by Tate/Nakayama and Kottwitz on algebraic tori.
Recently, the author defined multiple Dedekind zeta values [5] associated to a number K field and a cone C. These objects are number theoretic analogues of multiple zeta values. In this paper we prove that every multiple Dedekind zeta value over any number field K is a period of a mixed Tate motive. Moreover, if K is a totally real number field, then we can choose a cone C so that every multiple Dedekind zeta associated to the pair (K;C) is unramified over the ring of algebraic integers in K. In [7], the author proves similar statements in the special case of a real quadratic fields for a part…
For a compact Riemann surface $M$ of genus $g\ge 2$, we study the functional equations of the Selberg zeta functions attached with the Tate motives $f$. We prove that certain functional equations hold if and only if $f$ has the absolute automorphy.
We prove that for a compact locally symmetric Riemannian space $M$ of rank 1 there exist infinitely many automorphic Tate motives $f$ such that the generalized Selberg zeta function $Z_{M(f)}(s)$ satisfies a simple functional equation in the sense that it has no gamma factors.
This is the second installment in a sequence of articles devoted to "explicit Chabauty-Kim theory" for the thrice punctured line. Its ultimate goal is to construct an algorithmic solution to the unit equation whose halting will be conditional on Goncharov's conjecture about exhaustion of mixed Tate motives by motivic iterated integrals (refined somewhat with respect to ramification), and on Kim's conjecture about the determination of integral points via $p$-adic iterated integrals. In this installment we explain what this means while developing basic tools for the construction of the algorithm…
We make explicit Serre's generalization of the Sato-Tate conjecture for motives, by expressing the construction in terms of fiber functors from the motivic category of absolute Hodge cycles into a suitable category of Hodge structures of odd weight. This extends the case of abelian varietes, which we treated in a previous paper. That description was used by Fite--Kedlaya--Rotger--Sutherland to classify Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces; the present description is used by Fite--Kedlaya--Sutherland to make a similar classification for certain motives of weight 3. We also give conditions under…
The local Tamagawa number conjecure, first formulated by Fontaine and Perrin-Riou, expresses the compatibility of the (global) Tamagawa number conjecture on motivic $L$-functions with the functional equation. The local conjecture was proven for Tate motives over finite unramified extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ by Bloch and Kato. We use the theory of $(ϕ, Γ_K)$-modules and a reciprocity law due to Cherbonnier and Colmez to provide a new proof in the case of unramified extensions, and to prove the conjecture for the motive $\mathbb{Q}_p(2)$ over certain tamely ramified extensions.
We prove a conjecture of Conrad, Diamond, and Taylor on the size of certain deformation rings parametrizing potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. To achieve this, we extend results of Breuil and Mezard (classifying Galois lattices in semistable representations in terms of "strongly divisible modules") to the potentially crystalline case in Hodge-Tate weights (0,1). We then use these strongly divisible modules to compute the desired deformation rings. As a corollary, we obtain new results on the modularity of potentially Barsotti-Tate representations.
Building upon our arithmetic duality theorems for 1-motives, we prove that the Manin obstruction related to a finite subquotient $\Be (X)$ of the Brauer group is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on torsors under semiabelian varieties over a number field, assuming the finiteness of the Tate-Shaferevich group of the abelian quotient. This theorem answers a question by Skorobogatov in the semiabelian case and is a key ingredient of recent work on the elementary obstruction for homogeneous spaces over number fields. We also establish a Cassels-Tate type dual exact se…
Let $N$ be a power of $2$ or $3$, and $μ_{N}$ the set of $N$-th roots of unity. We show that the ring of motivic periods of Mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}[μ_{N},\frac{1}{N}]$ is spanned by the motivic cyclotomic multiple zeta values of level $N$. This implies that the action of the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}[μ_{N},\frac{1}{N}]$ on the motivic fundamental group of $\mathbb{G}_{m}-μ_{N}$ is faithful. This is a generalization of the known results for $N\in\{1,2,3,4,8\}$ by Deligne and Brown. We also discuss cyclotomic multiple zeta values of weight $2$ of oth…
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
We define the height of a motive over a number field. We show that if we assume the finiteness of motives of bounded height, Tate conjecture for the $p$-adic Tate module can be proved for motives with good reduction at $p$.
In a previous paper we constructed a new class of Iwasawa modules as $\ell$--adic realizations of what we called abstract $\ell$--adic $1$--motives in the number field setting. We proved in loc. cit. that the new Iwasawa modules satisfy an equivariant main conjecture. In this paper we link the new modules to the $\ell$--adified Tate canonical class, defined by Tate in 1960 and give an explicit construction of (the minus part of) $\ell$--adic Tate sequences for any Galois CM extension $K/k$ of an arbitrary totally real number field $k$. These explicit constructions are significant and useful in…
Over the past fifteen years or so, Minhyong Kim has developed a framework for making effective use of the fundamental group to bound (or even compute) integral points on hyperbolic curves. This is the third installment in a series whose goal is to realize the potential effectivity of Kim's approach in the case of the thrice punctured line. As envisioned in the last installment, we construct an algorithm whose output upon halting is provably the set of integral points, and whose halting would follow from conjectures. Our results go a long way towards achieving our goals over the rationals, whil…
In this paper we propose different notions of F_zeta-geometry, for zeta a root of unity, generalizing notions of F_1-geometry (geometry over the "field with one element") based on the behavior of the counting functions of points over finite fields, the Grothendieck class, and the notion of torification. We relate F_zeta-geometry to formal roots of Tate motives, and to functions in the Habiro ring, seen as counting functions of certain ind-varieties. We investigate the existence of F_zeta-structures in examples arising from general linear groups, matrix equations over finite fields, and some qu…
In this paper, we give a natural construction of mixed Tate motives whose periods are a class of iterated integrals which include the multiple polylogarithm functions. Given such an iterated integral, we construct two divisors $A$ and $B$ in the moduli spaces $\mathcal{\bar{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$-pointed stable curves of genus 0, and prove that the cohomology of the pair $(\mathcal{\bar{M}}_{0,n}-A,B-B\cap A)$ is a framed mixed Tate motive whose period is that integral. It generalizes the results of A. Goncharov and Yu. Manin for multiple zeta values. Then we apply our construction to the dilogarit…
In a previous article, we have proved a result asserting the existence of a compatible family of Galois representations containing a given crystalline irreducible odd two-dimensional representation. We apply this result to establish new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, namely, an irreducible Barsotti-Tate $λ$-adic 2-dimensional Galois representation unramified at 3 and such that the traces $a_p$ of the images of Frobenii verify $\Q(\{a_p^2 \}) = \Q $ always comes from an abelian variety. We also show the non-existence of irreducible Barsotti-Tate 2-dimensional Galois representations of …
Let K/F be a finite Galois extension of global fields with Galois group G and let M be a 1-motive over F. We discuss the kernel and cokernel of the restriction map Sha^{i}(F,M) --> Sha^{i}(K,M)^{G} for i=1 and 2, independently of any finiteness hypotheses. We show that these groups are finite and obtain, in particular, formulas for the corresponding quotient of group orders.
In this paper we obtain a Poitou-Tate exact sequence for finite and flat group schemes over a global function field. We also extend the duality theorems for 1-motives over number fields obtained by D.Harari and T.Szamuely to the function field case.
In this paper we introduce confluence relations for motivic Euler sums (also called alternating multiple zeta values) and show that all linear relations among motivic Euler sums are exhausted by the confluence relations. This determines all automorphisms of the de Rham fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1}\setminus\{0,\pm1,\infty\}$ coming from the action of the motivic Galois group of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$. Moreover, we also discuss other applications of the confluence relations such as an explicit $\mathbb{Q}$-linear expansion of a given motivic Euler sum by their basis…
We study a family of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ whose periods are linear forms in the zeta values $ζ(n)$. They naturally include the Beukers-Rhin-Viola integrals for $ζ(2)$ and the Ball-Rivoal linear forms in odd zeta values. We give a general integral formula for the coefficients of the linear forms and a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of the coefficients of a given parity. The main underlying result is a geometric construction of a minimal ind-object in the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$ which contains all the non-trivial extensions between simple objec…
For an abelian variety over a finite field, Clozel (1999) showed that l-homological equivalence coincides with numerical equivalence for infinitely many l, and the author (1999) gave a criterion for the Tate conjecture to follow from Tate's theorem on divisors. We generalize both statements to motives, and apply them to other varieties including K3 surfaces.
K. Kato has recently defined and studied heights of mixed motives and proposed some interesting questions. In this paper, we relate the study of heights to the study of Tamagawa numbers of motives. We also partially answer one of Kato's questions about the number of mixed motives of bounded heights in the case of mixed Tate motives with two graded quotients. Finally, we provide a concrete computation with the number of mixed Tate motives with three graded quotients.
We give a natural construction of unramified over Z framed mixed Tate motives, whose periods are the multiple zeta values. Namely, for each convergent multiple zeta-value we define two boundary divisors A and B in the moduli space M_{0,n+3} of stable curves of genus zero. The corresponding multiple zeta-motive is the n-th cohomology of the pair (M_{0,n+3} -A,B).
