Let $S$ be the spectrum of a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field of characteristic 0 and perfect residue field of characteristic $p\geq 3$. Let $G$ be a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level 1 over $S$. If ``$G$ is not too supersingular'', a condition that will be explicitly expressed in terms of the valuation of a certain determinant, we prove that we can canonically lift the kernel of the Frobenius endomorphism of its special fibre to a subgroup scheme of $G$, finite and flat over $S$. We call it the canonical subgroup of $G$.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$ and field of fractions $K$ of characteristic 0. In this paper we consider a $K$-1-motive $M_K$ as in [Ra] and its associated Barsotti-Tate group. This last does not in general extend to a Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. However, with some assumptions, it extends to a logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$. This follows from [Ra] and Kato's results on finite logarithmic group schemes. Once chosen a uniformizing parameter $π$ of $R$, any logarithmic Barsotti-Tate group over $R$ is describe…
We study stacks of truncated Barsotti-Tate groups and the $G$-zips defined by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler. The latter occur naturally when studying truncated Barsotti-Tate groups of height 1 with additional structure. By studying objects over finite fields and their automorphisms we determine the zeta functions of these stacks. These zeta functions can be expressed in terms of the Weyl group of the reductive group $G$ and its action on the root system. The main ingredients are the classification of $G$-zips over algebraically closed fields and their automorphism groups by Pink, Wedhorn & Ziegler, …
We develop a descent criterion for $K$-linear abelian categories. Using recent advances in the Langlands correspondence due to Abe, we build a correspondence between certain rank 2 local systems and certain Barsotti-Tate groups on complete curves over a finite field. We conjecture that such Barsotti-Tate groups "come from" a family of fake elliptic curves. As an application of these ideas, we provide a criterion for being a Shimura curve over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Along the way, we formulate a conjecture on the field-of-coefficients of certain compatible systems.
We prove a portion of a conjecture of B. Conrad, F. Diamond, and R. Taylor, yielding some new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjectures, specifically, the modularity of certain potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. The proof follows the template of Wiles, Taylor-Wiles, and Breuil-Conrad-Diamond-Taylor, and relies on a detailed study of the descent, across tamely ramified extensions, of finite flat group schemes over the integers of a local field. This makes crucial use of the filtered ϕ_1-modules of C. Breuil.
Previous work of Kisin and Gee proves potential diagonalisability of two dimensional Barsotti-Tate representations of the Galois group of a finite extension $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this paper we build upon their work by relaxing the Barsotti-Tate condition to one we call pseudo-Barsotti-Tate (which means that for certain embeddings $κ:K \rightarrow \overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p$ we allow the $κ$-Hodge-Tate weights to be contained in $[0,p]$ rather than $[0,1]$).
Let R be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p) with perfect residue field, K the fraction field of R. Suppose G is a Barsotti-Tate group (p-divisible group) defined over K which acquires good reduction over a finite extension K' of K. We prove that there exists a constant c which depends on the absolute ramification index e(K'/Q_p) and the height of G such that G has good reduction over K if and only if G[p^c] can be extended to a finite flat group scheme over R. For abelian varieties with potentially good reduction, this result generalizes Grothendieck's p-adic Ner…
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $R$ be a regular local ring of dimension $d\ge 2$ whose completion is isomorphic to $C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]/(h)$, with $C(k)$ a Cohen ring with the same residue field $k$ as $R$ and with $h\in C(k)[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$ such that its reduction modulo $p$ does not belong to the ideal $(x_1^p,\ldots,x_d^p)+(x_1,\ldots,x_d)^{2p-2}$ of $k[[x_1,\ldots,x_d]]$. We extend a result of Vasiu-Zink (for $d=2$) to show that each Barsotti-Tate group over $\text{Frac}(R)$ which extends to every local ring of $\text{Spec}(R)$ of dimension $1$, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group ove…
Let F be a unramified finite extension of Qp and rhobar be an irreducible mod p two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of F. The aim of this article is the explicit computation of the Kisin variety parameterizing the Breuil-Kisin modules associated to certain families of potentially Barsotti-Tate deformations of rhobar. We prove that this variety is a finite union of products of P^1. Moreover, it appears as an explicit closed subvariety of P^1^[F:\Qp]. We define a stratification of the Kisin variety by locally closed subschemes and explain how the Kisin variety equipped wi…
Let $ \CO $ be the ring of integers of a non-Archimedean local field and $ π$ a fixed uniformizer of $ \CO $. We establish three main results. The first one states that the exterior powers of a $ π$-divisible $ \CO $-module scheme of dimension at most 1 over a field exist and commute with algebraic field extensions. The second one states that the exterior powers of a $p$-divisible group of dimension at most 1 over arbitrary base exist and commute with arbitrary base change. The third one states that when $ \CO $ has characteristic zero, then the exterior powers of $ π$-divisible groups with sc…
Let $D$ be a $p$-divisible group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $n_D$ be the smallest non-negative integer such that $D$ is determined by $D[p^{n_D}]$ within the class of $p$-divisible groups over $k$ of the same codimension $c$ and dimension $d$ as $D$. We study $n_D$, lifts of $D[p^m]$ to truncated Barsotti--Tate groups of level $m+1$ over $k$, and the numbers $γ_D(i):=\dim(\pmb{Aut}(D[p^i]))$. We show that $n_D\le cd$, $(γ_D(i+1)-γ_D(i))_{i\in\Bbb N}$ is a decreasing sequence in $\Bbb N$, for $cd>0$ we have $γ_D(1)<γ_D(2)<...<γ_D(n_D)$, and for $m\in\{1,…
Let F be an unramified extension of Qp. The first aim of this work is to develop a purely local method to compute the potentially Barsotti-Tate deformations rings with tame Galois type of irreducible two-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of F. We then apply our method in the particular case where F has degree 2 over Q_p and determine this way almost all these deformations rings. In this particular case, we observe a close relationship between the structure of these deformations rings and the geometry of the associated Kisin variety. As a corollary and still assuming that…
We explicitly construct and investigate a number of examples of $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$-equivariant formal group laws and complex-oriented spectra, including those coming from elliptic curves and $p$-divisible groups, as well as some other related examples.
Let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb Q\_p$ and $\barρ$ be an absolutely irreducible mod~$p$ $2$-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $t$ be a tame inertial type of $F$. We conjecture that the deformation space parametrizing the potentially Barsotti--Tate liftings of $\barρ$ having type $t$ depends only on the Kisin variety attached to the situation, enriched with its canonical embedding into $(\mathbb P^1)^f$ and its shape stratification. We give evidences towards this conjecture by proving that the Kisin variety determines the cardinality of the …
The formal deformation space of a supersingular Barsotti-Tate group over of dimension two equipped with an action of Z_{p^2} is known to be isomorphic to the formal spectrum of a power series ring in two variables. If one chooses an extra Z_{p^2}-linear endomorphism of the p-divisible group then the locus in the formal deformation space formed by those deformations for which the extra endomorphism lifts is a closed formal subscheme of codimension two. We give a complete description of the irreducible components of this formal subscheme, compute the multiplicities of these components, and compu…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Let $c,d\in \mathbb{N}$ be such that $h=c+d>0$. Let $H$ be a $p$-divisible group of codimension $c$ and dimension $d$ over $k$. For $m\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$ let $H[p^m]=\ker([p^m]:H\rightarrow H)$. It is a finite commutative group scheme over $k$ of $p$ power order, called a Barsotti-Tate group of level $m$. We study a particular type of $p$-divisible groups $H_π$, where $π$ is a permutation on the set $\{1,2,\dots,h\}$. Let $(M,φ_π)$ be the Dieudonné module of $H_π$. Each $H_π$ is uniquely determined by $H_π[p]$ and by the fact th…
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 2$, and let $K$ be a finite totally ramified extension of $W(k)[\frac{1}{p}]$ of ramification degree $e$. We consider an unramified base ring $R_0$ over $W(k)$ satisfying certain conditions, and let $R = R_0\otimes_{W(k)}\mathcal{O}_K$. Examples of such $R$ include $R = \mathcal{O}_K[\![s_1, \ldots, s_d]\!]$ and $R = \mathcal{O}_K\langle t_1^{\pm 1}, \ldots, t_d^{\pm 1}\rangle$. We show that the generalization of Raynaud's theorem on extending $p$-divisible groups holds over the base ring $R$ when $e < p-1$, whereas it does not hold when $R = \…
We prove a conjecture of Conrad, Diamond, and Taylor on the size of certain deformation rings parametrizing potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. To achieve this, we extend results of Breuil and Mezard (classifying Galois lattices in semistable representations in terms of "strongly divisible modules") to the potentially crystalline case in Hodge-Tate weights (0,1). We then use these strongly divisible modules to compute the desired deformation rings. As a corollary, we obtain new results on the modularity of potentially Barsotti-Tate representations.
In a previous article, we have proved a result asserting the existence of a compatible family of Galois representations containing a given crystalline irreducible odd two-dimensional representation. We apply this result to establish new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, namely, an irreducible Barsotti-Tate $λ$-adic 2-dimensional Galois representation unramified at 3 and such that the traces $a_p$ of the images of Frobenii verify $\Q(\{a_p^2 \}) = \Q $ always comes from an abelian variety. We also show the non-existence of irreducible Barsotti-Tate 2-dimensional Galois representations of …
For any number field, we prove that there exists an elliptic curve defined over this field such that its Shafarevich-Tate group has a nontrivial 2-torsion subgroup.
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of prime conductor $N$. We show that if for an odd prime $p$, the mod $p$ representation associated to $E$ is reducible (in particular, if $p$ divides the order of the torsion subgroup of $E(\Q)$), then the $p$-primary component of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $E$ is trivial. We also state a related result for more general abelian subvarieties of $J_0(N)$ and mention what to expect if $N$ is not prime.
For a perfectoid ring $R$ and a natural number $n$ we investigate the essential image of the category of truncated by $n$ Barsotti-Tate groups under the anti-equivalence between commutative, finite, locally free, $R$-group schemes of $p$-power order and torsion Breuil-Kisin-Fargues modules over $R$. We describe the associated semi-liner algebra data and show as a consequence that every $\text{BT}_n$-group over $R$ is the $p^n$-torsion of some $\text{BT}$-group.
Let p be a rational prime, k be a perfect field of characteristic p and K be a finite totally ramified extension of the fraction field of the Witt ring of k. Let G be a finite flat commutative group scheme over O_K killed by some p-power. In this paper, we prove a description of ramification subgroups of G via the Breuil-Kisin classification, generalizing the author's previous result on the case where G is killed by p>2. As an application, we also prove that the higher canonical subgroup of a level n truncated Barsotti-Tate group G over O_K coincides with lower ramification subgroups of G if t…
One of the goals of this article is to describe the isomorphism between Lubin-Tate and Drinfeld towers at the level of their skeletons after taking quotient by $\GL_n (Ø_F)\times Ø_D^\times$ or $I\timesØ_D^\times$ where $Ø_D$ is the maximal order in the division algebra with invariant $\frac{1}{n}$ over $F$ and $I$ a Iwahori subgroup of $\GL_n$. We give applications to the theory of canonical subgroups on Lubin-Tate spaces, the description of spherical Hecke orbits in those spaces, fundamental domains for Hecke correspondences and the Gross-Hopkins period mapping. We also study in details the …
Let R be a complete rank-1 valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0,p), and let K be its field of fractions. A g-dimensional truncated Barsotti-Tate group G of level n over R is said to have a level-n canonical subgroup if there is a K-subgroup of G\tensor_R K with geometric structure (\Z/p^n\Z)^g consisting of points "closest to zero". We give a nontrivial condition on the Hasse invariant of G that guarantees the existence of the canonical subgroup, analogous to a result of Katz and Lubin for elliptic curves. The bound is independent of the height and dimension of G.
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $V$ be a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and index of ramification $e$. Let $f: G \rightarrow H$ be a homomorphism of finite flat commutative group schemes of $p$ power order over $V$ whose generic fiber is an isomorphism. We provide a new proof of a result of Bondarko and Liu that bounds the kernel and the cokernel of the special fiber of $f$ in terms of $e$. For $e < p-1$ this reproves a result of Raynaud. Our bounds are sharper that the ones of Liu, are almost as sharp as the ones of Bondarko, and involve a very simple and short method. As an …
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. A $BT_1$ group scheme over $k$ is a finite commutative group scheme which arises as the kernel of $p$ on a $p$-divisible (Barsotti--Tate) group. We compare three classifications of $BT_1$ group schemes, due in large part to Kraft, Ekedahl, and Oort, and defined using words, canonical filtrations, and permutations. Using this comparison, we determine the Ekedahl--Oort types of Fermat quotient curves and we compute four invariants of the $p$-torsion group schemes of these curves.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. Let H be a supersingular p-divisible group over k of height 2d. We show that H is uniquely determined up to isomorphism by its truncation of level d (i.e., by H[p^d]). This proves Traverso's truncation conjecture for supersingular p-divisible groups. If H has a principal quasi-polarization λ, we show that (H,λ) is also uniquely determined up to isomorphism by its principally quasi-polarized truncated Barsotti--Tate group of level d (i.e., by (H[p^d],λ[p^d])).
Let p > 2 be prime. We use purely local methods to determine the possible reductions of certain two-dimensional crystalline representations, which we call "pseudo-Barsotti-Tate representations", over arbitrary finite extensions of the p-adics. As a consequence, we establish (under the usual Taylor-Wiles hypothesis) the weight part of Serre's conjecture for GL(2) over arbitrary totally real fields.
Let p be a rational prime and K/Q_p be an extension of complete discrete valuation fields. Let G be a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level n, height h and dimension d over O_K with 0<d<h. In this paper, we prove the existence of higher canonical subgroups with expected properties for G if the Hodge height of G is less than 1/(p^{n-2}(p+1)), including the case of p=2.
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. A $BT_1$ group scheme over $k$ is a finite commutative group scheme which arises as the kernel of $p$ on a $p$-divisible (Barsotti--Tate) group. Our main result is that every $BT_1$ scheme group over $k$ occurs as a direct factor of the $p$-torsion group scheme of the Jacobian of an explicit curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We also treat a variant with polarizations. Our main tools are the Kraft classification of $BT_1$ group schemes, a theorem of Oda, and a combinatorial description of the de Rham …
Let $\cO_K$ be a complete discrete valuation ring of residue characteristic $p>0$, and $G$ be a finite flat group scheme over $\cO_K$ of order a power of $p$. We prove in this paper that the Abbes-Saito filtration of $G$ is bounded by a simple linear function of the degree of $G$. Assume $\cO_K$ has generic characteristic 0 and the residue field of $\cO_K$ is perfect. Fargues constructed the higher level canonical subgroups for a Barsotti-Tate group $\cG$ over $\cO_K$ which is "not too supersingular". As an application of our bound, we prove that the canonical subgroup of $\cG$ of level $n\geq…
Let p>2 be a rational prime and K/Q_p be an extension of complete discrete valuation fields. Let G be a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level n, height h and dimension d over O_K with 0<d<h. In this paper, we show that an upper ramification subgroup G^j+ is free of rank d over Z/p^nZ if the Hasse invariant of G is less than 1/(2p^(n-1)). We also prove the usual properties as the canonical subgroup.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$. Let $D_m$ be a $\BT_m$ over $k$ (i.e., an $m$-truncated Barsotti--Tate group over $k$). Let $S$ be a\break $k$-scheme and let $X$ be a $\BT_m$ over $S$. Let $S_{D_m}(X)$ be the subscheme of $S$ which describes the locus where $X$ is locally for the fppf topology isomorphic to $D_m$. If $p\ge 5$, we show that $S_{D_m}(X)$ is pure in $S$ i.e., the immersion $S_{D_m}(X) \hookrightarrow S$ is affine. For $p\in\{2,3\}$, we prove purity if $D_m$ satisfies a certain property depending only on its $p$-torsion $D_m[p]$. For $p\ge 5$, we apply the developed te…
For an abelian surface A over a number field k, we study the limiting distribution of the normalized Euler factors of the L-function of A. This distribution is expected to correspond to taking characteristic polynomials of a uniform random matrix in some closed subgroup of USp(4); this Sato-Tate group may be obtained from the Galois action on any Tate module of A. We show that the Sato-Tate group is limited to a particular list of 55 groups up to conjugacy. We then classify A according to the Galois module structure on the R-algebra generated by endomorphisms of A_Qbar (the Galois type), and e…
We show that, for an abelian variety defined over a $p$-adic field $K$ which has potential good reduction, its torsion subgroup with values in the composite field of $K$ and a certain Lubin-Tate extension over a $p$-adic field is finite.
Let p > 2 be prime. We state and prove (under mild hypotheses on the residual representation) a geometric refinement of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture for 2-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of Qp. We also state a conjectural generalisation to n-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of an arbitrary finite extension of Qp, and give a conditional proof of this conjecture, subject to a certain R = T-type theorem together with a strong version of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for rank n unitary groups. We deduce an unconditional result in the c…
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the maximal divisibile subgroup of H^1(k,A) and its intersection with the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
We determine the twisting Sato-Tate group of the genus $3$ hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$ and show that all possible subgroups of the twisting Sato-Tate group arise as the Sato-Tate group of an explicit twist of $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$. Furthermore, we prove the generalized Sato-Tate conjecture for the Jacobians of all $\mathbb Q$-twists of the curve $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$.
We announce the classification of Sato-Tate groups of abelian threefolds over number fields; there are 410 possible conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of USp(6) that occur. We summarize the key points of the "upper bound" aspect of the classification, and give a more rigorous treatment of the "lower bound" by realizing 33 groups that appear in the classification as maximal cases with respect to inclusions of finite index. Further details will be provided in a subsequent paper.
Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication. The aim of the present paper is to strengthen the theoretical and numerical results of \cite{CZS}. For each prime p, let t_{E/Q, p} denote the Z_p-corank of the p-primary subgroup of the Tate-Shafarevich group of E/Q. For each ε 0, we prove that t_{E/Q, p} is bounded above by (1/2+ε)p for all sufficiently large good ordinary primes p. We also do numerical calculations on one such E of rank 3, and 5 such E of rank 2, showing in all cases that t_{E/Q, p} = 0 for all good ordinary primes p < 30,000. In fact, we show that, with the pos…
In this text, we develop the theory of vectorial modular forms with values in Tate algebras introduced by the first author, in a very special case (dimension two, for a very particular representation of Γ := GL 2 (Fq[$theta$])). Among several results that we prove here, we determine the complete structure of the modules of these forms, we describe their specializations at roots of unity and their connection with Drinfeld modular forms for congruence subgroups of Γ and we prove that the modules generated by these forms are stable under the actions of Hecke operators.
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the divisibility in H^1(k,A) of elements of the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
Let (A,λ) be a principally polarized abelian variety defined over a global field k, and let \Sha(A) be its Shafarevich-Tate group. Let \Sha(A)_\nd denote the quotient of \Sha(A) by its maximal divisible subgroup. Cassels and Tate constructed a nondegenerate pairing \Sha(A)_\nd \times \Sha(A)_\nd \rightarrow \Q/\Z. If A is an elliptic curve, then by a result of Cassels the pairing is alternating. But in general it is only antisymmetric. Using some new but equivalent definitions of the pairing, we derive general criteria deciding whether it is alternating and whether there exists some alternatin…
We explain a method for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-isogeny Selmer groups of an elliptic curve. This improves the upper bound on the rank of the elliptic curve coming from a descent by 3-isogeny, to that coming from a full 3-descent. One ingredient of our work is a new algorithm for solving cubic norm equations, that avoids the need for any S-unit computations. As an application, we show that the elliptic curves with torsion subgroup of order 3 and rank at least 13, found by Eroshkin, have rank exactly 13.
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$, let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$, and let ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$ and ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}})$ denote, respectively, the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $A$ over $K$ and of $A$ over $F$. Assuming that these groups are finite, we derive, under certain restrictions on $A$ and $K/F$, a formula for the order of the subgroup of ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$ of $G$-invariant elements. As a corollary, we obtain a simple formula relating the orders of ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ K}})$, ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}})$ and ${\cyr W}(A_{^{/ F}}^χ)…
Let $X$ be a non-singular projective variety over a number field $K$, $i$ a non-negative integer, and $V_{\A}$, the etale cohomology of $\bar X$ with coefficients in the ring of finite adeles $\A_f$ over $\Q$. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we formulate a conjecture (Conjecture 1.2) describing the largeness of the image of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ in $H(\A_f)$ under the adelic Galois representation $ρ_{\A}: G_K -> \Aut(V_{\A})=\GL_n(\A_f)$, where $H$ is the Hodge group. The motivating example is a celebrated theorem of Serre, which asserts that if $X$ is an elliptic curve without…
Let E be an elliptic curve of conductor N and rank one over Q. So there is a non-constant morphism X+0(N) --> E defined over Q, where X+0(N) = X0(N)/wN and wN is the Fricke involution of the modular curve X+0(N). Under this morphism the traces of the Heegner points of X+0(N) map to rational points on E. In this paper we study the index I of the subgroup generated by all these traces on E(Q). We propose and also discuss a conjecture that says that if N is prime and I > 1, then either the number of connected components of the real locus X+0(N)(R) is greater than 1 or (less likely) the order S of…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$. We prove a control theorem for the fine Selmer group of the abelian variety $A$ which essentially says that the kernel and cokernel of the natural restriction maps in a given $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ are finite and bounded. We emphasise that our result does not have any constraints on the reduction of $A$ and the ramification of $F_\infty/F$. As a first consequence of the control theorem, we show that the fine Tate-Shafarevich group over an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has trivial $Λ$-corank. We then derive an as…
For $E/K$ an elliptic curve without complex multiplication we bound the index of the image of $\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{K}/K)$ in $\operatorname{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$, the representation being given by the action on the Tate modules of $E$ at the various primes. The bound is effective and only depends on $[K:\mathbb{Q}]$ and on the stable Faltings height of $E$. We also prove a result relating the structure of subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ to certain Lie algebras naturally attached to them.
