Let (A,λ) be a principally polarized abelian variety defined over a global field k, and let \Sha(A) be its Shafarevich-Tate group. Let \Sha(A)_\nd denote the quotient of \Sha(A) by its maximal divisible subgroup. Cassels and Tate constructed a nondegenerate pairing \Sha(A)_\nd \times \Sha(A)_\nd \rightarrow \Q/\Z. If A is an elliptic curve, then by a result of Cassels the pairing is alternating. But in general it is only antisymmetric.
Using some new but equivalent definitions of the pairing, we derive general criteria deciding whether it is alternating and whether there exists some alternating nondegenerate pairing on \Sha(A)_\nd. These criteria are expressed in terms of an element c \in \Sha(A)_\nd that is canonically associated to the polarization λ. In the case that A is the Jacobian of some curve, a down-to-earth version of the result allows us to determine effectively whether \#\Sha(A) (if finite) is a square or twice a square. We then apply this to prove that a positive proportion (in some precise sense) of all hyperelliptic curves of even genus g \ge 2 over \Q have a Jacobian with nonsquare \#\Sha (if finite). For example, it appears that this density is about 13% for curves of genus 2. The proof makes use of a general result relating global and local densities; this result can be applied in other situations.
We establish a generalized Cassels-Tate dual exact sequence for 1-motives over global fields. We thereby extend the main theorem of [4] from abelian varieties to arbitrary 1-motives.
We explicitly compute the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve using the Albanese-Albanese definition of the pairing given by Poonen and Stoll. This leads to a new proof that a pairing defined by Cassels on the 2-Selmer groups of elliptic curves agrees with the Cassels-Tate pairing.
Cassels has described a pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve which shares some properties with the Cassels-Tate pairing. In this article, we prove that the two pairings are the same.
We extend the method of Cassels for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, to the case of 3-Selmer groups. This requires significant modifications to both the local and global parts of the calculation. Our method is practical in sufficiently small examples, and can be used to improve the upper bound for the rank of an elliptic curve obtained by 3-descent.
In this paper, we study the Cassels-Tate pairing on Jacobians of genus two curves admitting a special type of isogenies called Richelot isogenies. Let $ϕ: J \rightarrow \widehat{J}$ be a Richelot isogeny between two Jacobians of genus two curves. We give an explicit formula as well as a practical algorithm to compute the Cassels-Tate pairing on $\text{Sel}^{\widehatϕ}(\widehat{J}) \times \text{Sel}^{\widehatϕ}(\widehat{J})$ where $\widehatϕ$ is the dual isogeny of $ϕ$. The formula and algorithm are under the simplifying assumption that all two torsion points on $J$ are defined over $K$. We als…
We use the invariant theory of binary quartics to give a new formula for the Cassels-Tate pairing on the $2$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve. Unlike earlier methods, our formula does not require us to solve any conics. An important role in our construction is played by a certain $K3$ surface defined by a $(2,2,2)$-form.
In this paper, we give an explicit formula as well as a practical algorithm for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on $\text{Sel}^{2}(J) \times \text{Sel}^{2}(J)$ where $J$ is the Jacobian variety of a genus two curve under the assumption that all points in $J[2]$ are $K$-rational. We also give an explicit formula for the Obstruction map $\text{Ob}: H^1(G_K, J[2]) \rightarrow \text{Br}(K)$ under the same assumption. Finally, we include a worked example demonstrating we can indeed improve the rank bound given by a 2-descent via computing the Cassels-Tate pairing.
We extend the well-known Cassels-Tate dual exact sequence for abelian varieties A over global fields K in two directions: we treat the p-primary component in the function field case, where p is the characteristic of K, and we dispense with the hypothesis that the Tate-Shafarevich group of A is finite.
We explain a method for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-isogeny Selmer groups of an elliptic curve. This improves the upper bound on the rank of the elliptic curve coming from a descent by 3-isogeny, to that coming from a full 3-descent. One ingredient of our work is a new algorithm for solving cubic norm equations, that avoids the need for any S-unit computations. As an application, we show that the elliptic curves with torsion subgroup of order 3 and rank at least 13, found by Eroshkin, have rank exactly 13.
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the divisibility in H^1(k,A) of elements of the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
We prove a 1966 conjecture of Tate concerning the Artin-Tate pairing on the Brauer group of a surface over a finite field, which is the analogue of the Cassels-Tate pairing. Tate asked if this pairing is always alternating and we find an affirmative answer, which is somewhat surprising in view of the work of Poonen-Stoll on the Cassels-Tate pairing. Our method is based on studying a connection between the Artin-Tate pairing and (generalizations of) Steenrod operations in étale cohomology. Inspired by an analogy to the algebraic topology of manifolds, we develop tools allowing us to calculate t…
Let $e_1,e_2,e_3$ be nonzero integers satisfying $e_1+e_2+e_3=0$. Let $(a,b,c)$ be a primitive triple of odd integers satisfying $e_1a^2+e_2b^2+e_3c^2=0$. Denote by $E: y^2=x(x-e_1)(x+e_2)$ and $\mathcal E: y^2=x(x-e_1a^2)(x+e_2b^2)$. Assume that the $2$-Selmer groups of $E$ and $\mathcal E$ are minimal. Let $n$ be a positive square-free odd integer, where the prime factors of $n$ are nonzero quadratic residues modulo each odd prime factor of $e_1e_2e_3abc$. Then under certain conditions, the $2$-Selmer group and the Cassels pairing of the quadratic twist $E^{(n)}$ coincide with those of $\mat…
This paper proposes new explicit formulas for the doubling and addition step in Miller's algorithm to compute the Tate pairing. For Edwards curves the formulas come from a new way of seeing the arithmetic. We state the first geometric interpretation of the group law on Edwards curves by presenting the functions which arise in the addition and doubling. Computing the coefficients of the functions and the sum or double of the points is faster than with all previously proposed formulas for pairings on Edwards curves. They are even competitive with all published formulas for pairing computation on…
We present algorithms for computing the squared Weil and Tate pairings on elliptic curves and the squared Tate pairing for hyperelliptic curves. The squared pairings introduced in this paper have the advantage that our algorithms for evaluating them are deterministic and do not depend on a random choice of points. Our pairings save about 20-30% over the usual pairings.
Fisher and Newton have given an explicit description of the Tate local pairing associated with the 3-torsion of an elliptic curve. The present paper summarizes the work from the author's master's thesis and gives an explicit formula for any odd prime $p$, thereby extending the work of Fisher and Newton.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.

In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organiz…
In this paper we describe the compactification of the Drinfeld modular curve. This compactification is analogous to the compactification of the classical modular curve given by Katz and Mazur. We show how the Weil pairing on Drinfeld modules that we defined in earlier work gives rise to a map on the Drinfeld modular curve. We introduce the Tate-Drinfeld module and show how this describes the formal neighbourhood of the scheme of cusps of the Drinfeld modular curve.
We study the relationship between the period and the index of a principal homogeneous space over an abelian variety, obtaining results which generalize work of Cassels and Lichtenbaum on curves of genus one. In addition, we show that the p-torsion in the Shafarevich-Tate group of a fixed abelian variety over a number field k grows arbitrarily large when considered over field extensions l/k of bounded degree. Essential use is made of an abelian variety version of O'Neil's period-index obstruction.
In the Lubin-Tate setting we study pairings for analytic $(φ_L,Γ_L)$-modules and prove an abstract reciprocity law which then implies a relation between the analogue of Perrin-Riou's Big Exponential map as developed by Berger and Fourquaux and a $p$-adic regulator map whose construction relies on the theory of Kisin-Ren modules generalising the concept of Wach modules to the Lubin-Tate situation.
This paper presents the Tate pairing computation on generalized Huff curves proposed by Wu and Feng. In fact, we extend the results of the Tate pairing computation on the standard Huff elliptic curves done previously by Joye, Tibouchi and Vergnaud. We show that the addition step of the Miller loop can be performed in $1\mathbf{M}+(k+15)\mathbf{m}+2\mathbf{c}$ and the doubling one in $1\mathbf{M} + 1\mathbf{S} + (k + 12) \mathbf{m} + 5\mathbf{s} + 2\mathbf{c}$ on the generalized Huff curve.
This paper is a continuation to \cite{Gazaki2017}. For every integer $n\geq 1$, we consider the generalized Galois symbol $K(k;G_1,G_2)/n\xrightarrow{s_n} H^2(k,G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n])$, where $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, $G_1,G_2$ are semi-abelian varieties over $k$ and $K(k;G_1,G_2)$ is the Somekawa K-group attached to $G_1, G_2$. Under some mild assumptions, we describe the exact annihilator of the image of $s_n$ under the Tate duality perfect pairing, $H^2(k,G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n])\times H^0(k,Hom(G_1[n]\otimes G_2[n],μ_n))\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}/n$. An important special case is …
Using Galois cohomology, Schmoyer characterizes cryptographic non-trivial self-pairings of the $\ell$-Tate pairing in terms of the action of the Frobenius on the $\ell$-torsion of the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve. We apply similar techniques to study the non-degeneracy of the $\ell$-Tate pairing restrained to subgroups of the $\ell$-torsion which are maximal isotropic with respect to the Weil pairing. First, we deduce a criterion to verify whether the jacobian of a genus 2 curve has maximal endomorphism ring. Secondly, we derive a method to construct horizontal $(\ell,\ell)$-isogenies starting …
We define a new canonical height pairing on the rational points of elliptic curves over global function fields which takes values in the multiplicative group of a completion of the function field. This height serves as an analogue of both the classical Neron-Tate height and analytic p-adic heights. Our main result is that under some general hypotheses this pairing is non-degenerate.
We give a direct proof that the Mazur-Tate and Coleman-Gross heights on elliptic curves coincide. The main ingredient is to extend the Coleman-Gross height to the case of divisors with non-disjoint support and, doing some $p$-adic analysis, show that, in particular, its component above $p$ gives, in the special case of an ordinary elliptic curve, the $p$-adic sigma function. We use this result to give a short proof of a theorem of Kim characterizing integral points on elliptic curves in some cases under weaker assumptions. As a further application, we give new formulas to compute double Colema…
We describe a general algorithm for computing intersection pairings on arithmetic surfaces. We have implemented our algorithm for curves over $\mathbb Q$, and we show how to use it to compute regulators for a number of Jacobians of smooth plane quartics, and to numerically verify the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for the Jacobian of the split Cartan curve of level 13, up to squares.
Let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Let $A$, $B$ be abelian varieties over $K$ of good reduction. For any integer $m\geq 1$, we consider the Galois symbol $K(K;A,B)/m\rightarrow H^2(K,A[m]\otimes B[m])$, where $K(K;A,B)$ is the Somekawa $K$-group attached to $A,B$. This map is a generalization of the Galois symbol $K_2^M(K)/m\rightarrow H^2(K,μ_m^{\otimes 2})$ of the Bloch-Kato conjecture, where $K_2^M(K)$ is the Milnor $K$-group of $K$. In this paper we give a geometric description of the image of this generalized Galois symbol by looking at the Tate duality pairing $H^{2}(K,A[m]…
We construct a $(\mathfrak{gl}_2, B(\mathbb{Q}_p))$ and Hecke-equivariant cup product pairing between overconvergent modular forms and the local cohomology at $0$ of a sheaf on $\mathbb{P}^1$, landing in the compactly supported completed $\mathbb{C}_p$-cohomology of the modular curve. The local cohomology group is a highest-weight Verma module, and the cup product is non-trivial on a highest weight vector for any overconvergent modular form of infinitesimal weight not equal to $1$. For classical weight $k\geq 2$, the Verma has an algebraic quotient $H^1(\mathbb{P}^1, \mathcal{O}(-k))$, and on …
We prove the Tate duality for higher dimensional local fields of mixed characteristic (0,p), when p is an odd prime, using the theory of higher fields of norms. Assuming that p is not ramified in the basefield, we then use this construction to define the higher Hilbert pairing. In particular, we show that the Hilbert pairing is non-degenerate, and we re-discover the formulae of Brueckner and Vostokov.
We study the 2-parity conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Under some mild assumptions on their reduction, we prove the conjecture over quadratic extensions of the base field. The proof proceeds via a generalisation of a formula of Kramer and Tunnell relating local invariants of the curve, which may be of independent interest. A new feature of this generalisation is the appearance of terms which govern whether or not the Cassels--Tate pairing on the Jacobian is alternating, which first appeared in work of Poonen--Stoll. We establish the local formula in many ins…
Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2$, square-free level and trivial character, let $A_f$ be the abelian variety attached to $f$ and for every good ordinary prime $p$ for $f$ let $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ be the $p$-adic Hida family through $f$. We prove that, for all but finitely many primes $p$ as above, if $A_f$ is an elliptic curve such that $A_f(\mathbb Q)$ has rank $1$ and the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $A_f$ over $\mathbb Q$ is finite then all specializations of $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ of weight congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$ and trivial character have finite ($p$-primar…
Let $k$ be a number field and let ${\mathcal{A}}$ be a ${\rm GL}_2$-type variety defined over $k$ of dimension $d$. We show that for every prime number $p$ satisfying certain conditions (see Theorem 2), if the local-global divisibility principle by a power of $p$ does not hold for ${\mathcal{A}}$ over $k$, then there exists a cyclic extension $\widetilde{k}$ of $k$ of degree bounded by a constant depending on $d$ such that ${\mathcal{A}}$ is $\widetilde{k}$-isogenous to a ${\rm GL}_2$-type variety defined over $\widetilde{k}$ that admits a $\widetilde{k}$-rational point of order $p$. Moreover,…
We present an algorithm which speeds scalar multiplication on a general elliptic curve by an estimated 3.8 % to 8.5 % over the best known general methods when using affine coordinates. This is achieved by eliminating a field multiplication when we compute 2P+Q from given points P, Q on the curve. We give applications to simultaneous multiple scalar multiplication and to the Elliptic Curve Method of factorization. We show how this improvement together with another idea can speed the computation of the Weil and Tate pairings by up to 7.8 %.
Using maximal isotropic submodules in a quadratic module over Z_p, we prove the existence of a natural discrete probability distribution on the set of isomorphism classes of short exact sequences of co-finite type Z_p-modules, and then conjecture that as E varies over elliptic curves over a fixed global field k, the distribution of 0 --> E(k) tensor Q_p/Z_p --> Sel_{p^infty} E --> Sha[p^infty] --> 0 is that one. We show that this single conjecture would explain many of the known theorems and conjectures on ranks, Selmer groups, and Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves. We also prove the …
Let $p \geq 2$ be a prime number and let $k$ be a number field. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an abelian variety defined over $k$. We prove that if ${\rm Gal} ( k ( {\mathcal{A}}[p] ) / k )$ contains an element $g$ of order dividing $p-1$ not fixing any non-trivial element of ${\mathcal{A}}[p]$ and $H^1 ( {\rm Gal} ( k ( {\mathcal{A}}[p] ) / k ), {\mathcal{A}}[p] )$ is trivial, then the local-global divisibility by $p^n$ holds for ${\mathcal{A}} ( k )$ for every $n \in \mathbb{N}$. Moreover, we prove a similar result without the hypothesis on the triviality of $H^1 ( {\rm Gal} ( k ( {\mathcal{A}}[p] ) …
The decision-Diffie-Hellman problem (DDH) is a central computational problem in cryptography. It is known that the Weil and Tate pairings can be used to solve many DDH problems on elliptic curves. Distortion maps are an important tool for solving DDH problems using pairings and it is known that distortion maps exist for all supersingular elliptic curves. We present an algorithm to construct suitable distortion maps. The algorithm is efficient on the curves usable in practice, and hence all DDH problems on these curves are easy. We also discuss the issue of which DDH problems on ordinary curves…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $k$, let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-power degree. Under not-too-stringent hypotheses we give an interpretation of the $p$-component of the relevant case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture in terms of integral congruence relations involving the evaluation on appropriate points of $A$ of the ${\rm Gal}(F/k)$-valued height pairing of Mazur and Tate. We then discuss the numerical computation of this pairing, and in particular obtain the first numerical verifications of this conjecture in…
We show how the Weil pairing can be used to evaluate the assigned characters of an imaginary quadratic order $\mathcal{O}$ in an unknown ideal class $[\mathfrak{a}] \in \mathrm{Cl}(\mathcal{O})$ that connects two given $\mathcal{O}$-oriented elliptic curves $(E, ι)$ and $(E', ι') = [\mathfrak{a}](E, ι)$. When specialized to ordinary elliptic curves over finite fields, our method is conceptually simpler and often somewhat faster than a recent approach due to Castryck, Sotáková and Vercauteren, who rely on the Tate pairing instead. The main implication of our work is that it breaks the decisiona…
