We present algorithms for computing the squared Weil and Tate pairings on elliptic curves and the squared Tate pairing for hyperelliptic curves. The squared pairings introduced in this paper have the advantage that our algorithms for evaluating them are deterministic and do not depend on a random choice of points. Our pairings save about 20-30% over the usual pairings.
It was shown by Faltings and Hriljac that the Néron-Tate height of a point on the Jacobian of a curve can be expressed as the self-intersection of a corresponding divisor on a regular model of the curve. We make this explicit and use it to give an algorithm for computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. To demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm, we illustrate it by computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus from 1 to 9.
We present an heuristic argument for the prediction of expected Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic curves over number fields, using Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer's original conjecture and Sato-Tate conjectures. We do calculations in some cases and raise questions about their relations, if any, with the predictions of various average rank models that have been considered.
Inspired by experimental data, this paper investigates which isogeny classes of abelian varieties defined over a finite field of odd characteristic contain the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve. We provide a necessary condition by demonstrating that the Weil polynomial of a hyperelliptic Jacobian must have a particular form modulo 2. For fixed ${g\geq1}$, the proportion of isogeny classes of $g$ dimensional abelian varieties defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which fail this condition is $1 - Q(2g + 2)/2^g$ as $q\to\infty$ ranges over odd prime powers, where $Q(n)$ denotes the number of partitions of…
In this article we extend work of Shanks and Washington on cyclic extensions, and elliptic curves associated to the simplest cubic fields. In particular, we give families of examples of hyperelliptic curves $C: y^2=f(x)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with $f(x)$ of degree $p$, where $p$ is a Sophie Germain prime, such that the rank of the Mordell--Weil group of the jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ of $C$ is bounded by the genus of $C$ and the $2$-rank of the class group of the (cyclic) field defined by $f(x)$, and exhibit examples where this bound is sharp.
We give a completely explicit upper bound for integral points on (standard) affine models of hyperelliptic curves, provided we know at least one rational point and a Mordell-Weil basis of the Jacobian. We also explain a powerful refinement of the Mordell--Weil sieve which, combined with the upper bound, is capable of determining all the integral points. Our method is illustrated by determining the integral points on a two genus 2 hyperelliptic curves with Mordell--Weil Jacobian ranks of 3 and 6.
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the divisibility in H^1(k,A) of elements of the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
We give a method for the computation of integral points on a hyperelliptic curve of odd degree over the rationals whose genus equals the Mordell-Weil rank of its Jacobian. Our approach consists of a combination of the $p$-adic approximation techniques introduced in previous work with the Mordell-Weil sieve
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the maximal divisibile subgroup of H^1(k,A) and its intersection with the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
We consider an abelian variety defined over a number field. We give conditional bounds for the order of its Tate-Shafarevich group, as well as conditional bounds for the Néron-Tate height of generators of its Mordell-Weil group. The bounds are implied by strong but nowadays classical conjectures, such as the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and the functional equation of the L-series. In particular, we improve and generalise a result by D. Goldfeld and L. Szpiro on the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, and extends a conjecture of S. Lang on the canonical height of a system of generators…
We give an algorithm that, given an elliptic curve $E$ over $\Qbar$ in Weierstraß form, computes the infimum and supremum of the difference between the na\"ıve and canonical height functions on $E(\Qbar)$. ----- Nous donnons un algorithme qui, étant donnée une courbe elliptique $E$ sur $\Qbar$ sous la forme de Weierstraß, calcule l'infimum et le supremum de la différence entre la hauteur na\"ıve et la hauteur canonique sur $E(\Qbar)$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ where $p$ splits completely. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at all primes above $p$. Generalizing previous works of Kobayashi and Sprung, we define multiply signed Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a finite extension $F$ of $K$ where $p$ is unramified. Under the hypothesis that the Pontryagin duals of these Selmer groups are torsion over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ over a subextension of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension are bounded. Furthermore,…
We consider the identity component of the Sato-Tate group of the Jacobian of curves of the form $$C_1\colon y^2=x^{2g+2}+c, C_2\colon y^2=x^{2g+1}+cx, C_3\colon y^2=x^{2g+1} +c,$$ where $g$ is the genus of the curve and $c\in\mathbb Q^*$ is constant. We approach this problem in three ways. First we use a theorem of Kani-Rosen to determine the splitting of Jacobians for $C_1$ curves of genus 4 and 5 and prove what the identity component of the Sato-Tate group is in each case. We then determine the splitting of Jacobians of higher genus $C_1$ curves by finding maps to lower genus curves and then…
We give a new formula for the special value at s=2 of the Hasse-Weil zeta function for smooth projective fourfolds under some assumptions (the Tate and Beilinson conjecture, finiteness of some cohomology groups, etc.). Our formula may be considered as a generalization of the Artin-Tate(-Milne) formula for smooth surfaces, and expresses the special zeta value almost exclusively in terms of inner geometric invariants such as higher Chow groups (motivic cohomology groups). Moreover we compare our formula with Geisser's formula for the same zeta value in terms of Weil-étale motivic cohomology grou…
We describe a qualitative improvement to the algorithms for performing 2-descents to obtain information regarding the Mordell-Weil rank of a hyperelliptic Jacobian. The improvement has been implemented in the Magma Computational Algebra System and as a result, the rank bounds for hyperelliptic Jacobians are now sharper and have the conjectured parity.
We use Arakelov theory to define a height on divisors of degree zero on a hyperelliptic curve over a global field, and show that this height has computably bounded difference from the Néron-Tate height of the corresponding point on the Jacobian. We give an algorithm to compute the set of points of bounded height with respect to this new height. This provides an `in principle' solution to the problem of determining the sets of points of bounded Néron-Tate heights on the Jacobian. We give a worked example of how to compute the bound over a global function field for several curves, of genera up t…
In this paper, we construct some families of infinitely many hyperelliptic curves of genus $2$ with exactly two rational points. In the proof, we first show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of these hyperelliptic curves are $0$ and then determine the sets of rational points by using the Lutz-Nagell type theorem for hyperelliptic curves which was proven by Grant.
Nagao's conjecture relates the rank of an elliptic surface to a limit formula arising from a weighted average of fibral Frobenius traces, and it is further generalized for smooth irreducible projective surfaces by M. Hindry and A. Pacheco. We show that the Sato-Tate conjecture based on the random matrix model implies Nagao's conjecture for certain twist families of elliptic curves and hyperelliptic curves.
We characterize quadratic twists of $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ with Mordell-Weil groups and $2$-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate groups being isomorphic to $(\mathb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$ under certain conditions. We also obtain the distribution result of these elliptic curves.
Let $Σ$ be a smooth projective surface, let $f' : S' \to Σ$ be a double cover of $Σ$ and let $μ: S \to S'$ be the canonical resolution. Put $f = f'\circμ$. An irreducible curve $C$ on $Σ$ is said to be a splitting curve with respect to $f$ if $f^*C$ is of the form $C^+ + C^- + E$, where $C^- = σ_f^*C^+$, $σ_f$ being the covering transformation of $f$ and all irreducible components of $E$ are contained in the exceptional set of $μ$. In this article, we show that a kind of "reciprocity" of splitting curves holds for a certain pair of curves on rational ruled surfaces. As an application, we consi…
We show that there is a bound depending only on g and [K:Q] for the number of K-rational points on a hyperelliptic curve C of genus g over a number field K such that the Mordell-Weil rank r of its Jacobian is at most g-3. If K = Q, an explicit bound is 8 r g + 33 (g - 1) + 1. The proof is based on Chabauty's method; the new ingredient is an estimate for the number of zeros of a logarithm in a p-adic `annulus' on the curve, which generalizes the standard bound on disks. The key observation is that for a p-adic field k, the set of k-points on C can be covered by a collection of disks and annuli …
We determine the twisting Sato-Tate group of the genus $3$ hyperelliptic curve $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$ and show that all possible subgroups of the twisting Sato-Tate group arise as the Sato-Tate group of an explicit twist of $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$. Furthermore, we prove the generalized Sato-Tate conjecture for the Jacobians of all $\mathbb Q$-twists of the curve $y^2 = x^{8} - 14x^4 + 1$.
Mazur and Tate proposed a conjecture which compares the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with the order of vanishing of Mazur-Tate elements, which are analogues of Stickelberger elements. Under some relatively mild assumptions, we prove this conjecture. Our strategy of the proof is to study divisibility of certain derivatives of Kato's Euler system.
We consider the family of hyperelliptic curves over $\Q$ of fixed genus along with a marked rational Weierstrass point and a marked rational non-Weierstrass point. When these curves are ordered by height, we prove that the average Mordell-Weil rank of their Jacobians is bounded above by 5/2. We prove this by showing that the average rank of the 2-Selmer groups is bounded above by 6. We also prove that the average size of the $ϕ$-Selmer groups of a family of isogenies associated to this family is exactly 2.
We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.
We study a subclass of congruent elliptic curves $E^{(n)}: y^2=x^3-n^2x$, where $n$ is a positive integer congruent to $1\pmod 8$ with all prime factors congruent to $1\pmod 4$. We characterize such $E^{(n)}$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate group isomorphic to $\big(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z \big)^2$. We also discuss such $E^{(n)}$ with 2-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate group isomorphic to $\big(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z \big)^{2k}$ with $k\ge2$.
Let $ p $ and $ q $ be odd prime numbers with $ q - p = 2, $ the $φ-$Selmer groups, Shafarevich-Tate groups ($ φ- $ and $ 2-$part) and their dual ones as well the Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x \pm p) (x \pm q) $ over imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one are determined explicitly in many cases.
We consider the distribution of normalized Frobenius traces for two families of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves over Q that have large automorphism groups: y^2=x^8+c and y^2=x^7-cx with c in Q*. We give efficient algorithms to compute the trace of Frobenius for curves in these families at primes of good reduction. Using data generated by these algorithms, we obtain a heuristic description of the Sato-Tate groups that arise, both generically and for particular values of c. We then prove that these heuristic descriptions are correct by explicitly computing the Sato-Tate groups via the correspondenc…
We study the 2-parity conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Under some mild assumptions on their reduction, we prove the conjecture over quadratic extensions of the base field. The proof proceeds via a generalisation of a formula of Kramer and Tunnell relating local invariants of the curve, which may be of independent interest. A new feature of this generalisation is the appearance of terms which govern whether or not the Cassels--Tate pairing on the Jacobian is alternating, which first appeared in work of Poonen--Stoll. We establish the local formula in many ins…
There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
The vertical Sato--Tate conjectures gives expected trace distributions for for families of curves. We develop exact expression for the distribution associated to degree-$4$ representations of $\mathrm{USp}(4)$, $\mathrm{SU}(2)\times\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ in the neighborhood of the extremities of the Weil bound. As a consequence we derive qualitative distinctions between the extremal traces arising from generic genus-$2$ curves and genus-$2$ curves with real or quaternionic multiplication. In particular we show, in a specific sense, to what extent curves with real multiplication d…
It has recently been shown that cryptographic trilinear maps are sufficient for achieving indistinguishability obfuscation. In this paper we develop a method for constructing such maps on the Weil descent (restriction) of abelian varieties over finite fields, including the Jacobian varieties of hyperelliptic curves and elliptic curves. The security of these candidate cryptographic trilinear maps raises several interesting questions, including the computational complexity of a trapdoor discrete logarithm problem.
We present an algorithm which speeds scalar multiplication on a general elliptic curve by an estimated 3.8 % to 8.5 % over the best known general methods when using affine coordinates. This is achieved by eliminating a field multiplication when we compute 2P+Q from given points P, Q on the curve. We give applications to simultaneous multiple scalar multiplication and to the Elliptic Curve Method of factorization. We show how this improvement together with another idea can speed the computation of the Weil and Tate pairings by up to 7.8 %.
The second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture gives a conjectural formula for the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve in terms of other computable invariants of the curve. Cremona and Mazur initiated a theory that can often be used to verify the BSD conjecture by constructing non-trivial elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve by means of the Mordell-Weil group of an ambient curve. In this paper, we generalize Cremona and Mazur's work and give precise conditions under which such a construction can be made for the Shafarevich-Tate gro…

We compute rational points on genus $3$ odd degree hyperelliptic curves $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have Jacobians of Mordell-Weil rank $0$. The computation applies the Chabauty-Coleman method to find the zero set of a certain system of $p$-adic integrals, which is known to be finite and include the set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$. We implemented an algorithm in Sage to carry out the Chabauty-Coleman method on a database of $5870$ curves.
We construct a stable formal model of a Lubin-Tate curve with level three, and study the action of a Weil group and a division algebra on its stable reduction. Further, we study a structure of cohomology of the Lubin-Tate curve. Our study is purely local and includes the case where the characteristic of the residue field of a local field is two.
Given a curve X of the form y^p = h(x) over a number field, one can use descents to obtain explicit bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian or to prove that the curve has no rational points. We show how, having performed such a descent, one can easily obtain additional information which may rule out the existence of rational divisors on X of degree prime to p. This can yield sharper bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank by demonstrating the existence of nontrivial elements in the Shafarevich-Tate group. As an example we compute the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian of a genus 4 curve over Q …
In the previous paper, Hirakawa and the author determined the set of rational points of a certain infinite family of hyperelliptic curves $C^{(p;i,j)}$ parametrized by a prime number $p$ and integers $i$, $j$. In the proof, we used the standard $2$-descent argument and a Lutz-Nagell theorem that was proven by Grant. In this paper, we extend the above work. By using the descent theorem, the proof for $j=2$ is reduced to elliptic curves of rank $0$ that are independent of $p$. On the other hand, for odd $j$, we consider another hyperelliptic curve $C'^{(p;i,j)}$ whose Jacobian variety is isogeno…
In this paper we investigate the 2-Selmer rank in families of quadratic twists of elliptic curves over arbitrary number fields. We give sufficient conditions on an elliptic curve so that it has twists of arbitrary 2-Selmer rank, and we give lower bounds for the number of twists (with bounded conductor) that have a given 2-Selmer rank. As a consequence, under appropriate hypotheses we can find many twists with trivial Mordell-Weil group, and (assuming the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture) many others with infinite cyclic Mordell-Weil group. Using work of Poonen and Shlapentokh, it follows from our r…
We describe the behaviour of the rank of the Mordell-Weil group of the Picard variety of the generic fibre of a fibration in terms of local contributions given by averaging traces of Frobenius acting on the fibres. The results give a reinterpretation of Tate's conjecture (for divisors) and generalises previous results of Nagao, Rosen-Silverman and the authors.
We describe a computation of rational points on genus 3 hyperelliptic curves $C$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobians have Mordell-Weil rank 1. Using the method of Chabauty and Coleman, we present and implement an algorithm in Sage to compute the zero locus of two Coleman integrals and analyze the finite set of points cut out by the vanishing of these integrals. We run the algorithm on approximately 17,000 curves from a forthcoming database of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves and discuss some interesting examples where the zero set includes global points not found in $C(\mathbb{Q})$.
We prove that when all hyperelliptic curves of genus $n\geq 1$ having a rational Weierstrass point are ordered by height, the average size of the 2-Selmer group of their Jacobians is equal to 3. It follows that (the limsup of) the average rank of the Mordell-Weil group of their Jacobians is at most 3/2. The method of Chabauty can then be used to obtain an effective bound on the number of rational points on most of these hyperelliptic curves; for example, we show that a majority of hyperelliptic curves of genus $n\geq 3$ with a rational Weierstrass point have fewer than 20 rational points.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $k$, let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-power degree. Under not-too-stringent hypotheses we give an interpretation of the $p$-component of the relevant case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture in terms of integral congruence relations involving the evaluation on appropriate points of $A$ of the ${\rm Gal}(F/k)$-valued height pairing of Mazur and Tate. We then discuss the numerical computation of this pairing, and in particular obtain the first numerical verifications of this conjecture in…
In this paper we describe the compactification of the Drinfeld modular curve. This compactification is analogous to the compactification of the classical modular curve given by Katz and Mazur. We show how the Weil pairing on Drinfeld modules that we defined in earlier work gives rise to a map on the Drinfeld modular curve. We introduce the Tate-Drinfeld module and show how this describes the formal neighbourhood of the scheme of cusps of the Drinfeld modular curve.
