We give a completely explicit upper bound for integral points on (standard) affine models of hyperelliptic curves, provided we know at least one rational point and a Mordell-Weil basis of the Jacobian. We also explain a powerful refinement of the Mordell--Weil sieve which, combined with the upper bound, is capable of determining all the integral points. Our method is illustrated by determining the integral points on a two genus 2 hyperelliptic curves with Mordell--Weil Jacobian ranks of 3 and 6.
In this paper, we construct some families of infinitely many hyperelliptic curves of genus $2$ with exactly two rational points. In the proof, we first show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of these hyperelliptic curves are $0$ and then determine the sets of rational points by using the Lutz-Nagell type theorem for hyperelliptic curves which was proven by Grant.
For a square-free integer $N$, we present a procedure to compute $\mathbb{Q}$-curves parametrized by rational points of the modular curve $X_0^*(N)$ when this is hyperelliptic.
We describe an algorithm that determines a set of unramified covers of a given hyperelliptic curve, with the property that any rational point will lift to one of the covers. In particular, if the algorithm returns an empty set, then the hyperelliptic curve has no rational points. This provides a relatively efficiently tested criterion for solvability of hyperelliptic curves. We also discuss applications of this algorithm to curves of genus 1 and to curves with rational points.
We study the variation of Selmer ranks of Jacobians of twists of hyperelliptic curves and superelliptic curves. We find sufficient conditions for such curves to have infinitely many twists whose Jacobians have Selmer ranks equal to $r$, for any given nonnegative integer $r$. This generalizes earlier results of Mazur-Rubin on elliptic curves.
We give a method for the computation of integral points on a hyperelliptic curve of odd degree over the rationals whose genus equals the Mordell-Weil rank of its Jacobian. Our approach consists of a combination of the $p$-adic approximation techniques introduced in previous work with the Mordell-Weil sieve
In this paper we give a passage formula between different invariants of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves: in particular between Tsuyumine and Shioda invariants. This is needed to get modular expressions for Shioda invariants, that is, for example, useful for proving the correctness of numerically computed equations of CM genus 3 hyperelliptic curves. On the other hand, we also get Shioda invariants described in terms of differences of roots of the equation defining the hyperelliptic curve, that has applications for studying the reduction type of the curve. Under certain conditions on its jacobian,…
Up to isomorphism over C, every simple principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 3 is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve of genus 3. Furthermore, this curve is either a hyperelliptic curve or a plane quartic. Given a sextic CM field K, we show that if there exists a hyperelliptic Jacobian with CM by K, then all principally polarized abelian varieties that are Galois conjugated to it are hyperelliptic. Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we give an algorithm for computing approximations of the invariants of the initial curve, as well as their Galois conjugates. This allows us ton d…
We study how Tamagawa numbers of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves vary as one varies the base field or the curve, in the case of semistable reduction. We find that there are strong constraints on the behaviour that appears, some of which are unexpected and specific to hyperelliptic curves. Our methods are explicit and allow one to write down formulae for Tamagawa numbers of infinite families of hyperelliptic curves, of the kind used in proofs of the parity conjecture for Jacobians of curves of small genus.
We give an efficient algorithm to compute equations of twists of hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus over any separable field (of characteristic different from 2), and we explicitly describe some interesting examples.
We study a class of semistable ordinary hyperelliptic curves over 2-adic fields and the special fibre of their minimal regular model. We show that these curves can be controlled using `cluster pictures', similarly to the case of odd residue characteristic.
Guo and Yang give defining equations for all geometrically hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0(D,N)$. In this paper we compute the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves using a variety of techniques. We also determine which rational points are CM for many of these curves.
We describe the use of explicit isogenies to translate instances of the Discrete Logarithm Problem (DLP) from Jacobians of hyperelliptic genus 3 curves to Jacobians of non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curves, where they are vulnerable to faster index calculus attacks. We provide explicit formulae for isogenies with kernel isomorphic to $(\ZZ/2\ZZ)^3$ (over an algebraic closure of the base field) for any hyperelliptic genus 3 curve over a field of characteristic not 2 or 3. These isogenies are rational for a positive fraction of all hyperelliptic genus 3 curves defined over a finite field of character…
Coleman's theory of p-adic integration figures prominently in several number-theoretic applications, such as finding torsion and rational points on curves, and computing p-adic regulators in K-theory (including p-adic heights on elliptic curves). We describe an algorithm for computing Coleman integrals on hyperelliptic curves, and its implementation in Sage.
In this paper we explicitly compute equations for the twists of all the smooth plane quartic curves defined over a number field k. Since the plane quartic curves are non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 we can apply the method developed by the author in a previous article. The starting point is a classification due to Henn of the plane quartic curves with non-trivial automorphism group up to C-isomorphism.
We study the averages of products of traces of high powers of the Frobenius class of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field. We show that for increasing genus g, the limiting expectation of these products equals to the expectation when the curve varies over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We also consider the scaling limit of linear statistics for eigenphases of the Frobenius class of hyperelliptic curves, and show that their first few moments are Gaussian.
We present an algorithm that computes the Hasse-Witt matrix of given hyperelliptic curve over Q at all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N. It is simpler and faster than the previous algorithm developed by the authors.
We present an efficient algorithm to compute the Hasse-Witt matrix of a hyperelliptic curve C/Q modulo all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N, based on the average polynomial-time algorithm recently introduced by Harvey. An implementation for hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 and 3 is more than an order of magnitude faster than alternative methods for N = 2^26.
In this paper, we are going to compute the average size of 2-Selmer groups of families of even hyperelliptic curves over function fields. The result will be obtained by a geometric method which is based on a Vinberg representation of the group $G=\text{PSO}(2n+2)$ and a Hitchin fibration. Consistent with the result over Q of Arul Shankar and Xiaoheng Wang [Rational points on hyperelliptic curves having a marked non-Weierstrass point, in Compos. Math., 154(1):188-222, 2018], we provide an upper bound and a lower bound of the average. However, if we restrict to the family of transversal hyperell…
We give a condition for a hyperelliptic curve $C$ over a local field $K$ to be locally soluble, on the condition that $C$ obtains semistable reduction after a tame extension of $K$, and that the residue field $k$ is sufficiently large relative to the genus of the curve. The condition is presented in terms of the cluster picture of $C$, a combinatorial object which determines much of the local arithmetic of $C$.
Let $f(x)$ be a nonconstant polynomial with integer coefficients and nonzero discriminant. We study the distribution modulo primes of the set of squarefree integers $d$ such that the curve $dy^2=f(x)$ has a nontrivial rational or integral point.
Let $K$ be a complete discretely valued field of residue characteristic not $2$ and $O_K$ its ring of integers. We explicitly construct a regular model over $O_K$ with strict normal crossings of any hyperelliptic curve $C/K:y^2=f(x)$. For this purpose, we introduce the new notion of ''MacLane cluster picture'', that aims to be a link between clusters and MacLane valuations.
By a hyperelliptic curve over Q, we mean a smooth, geometrically irreducible, complete curve C over Q equipped with a fixed map of degree 2 to P^1 defined over Q. Thus any hyperelliptic curve C over Q of genus g can be embedded in weighted projective space P(1,1,g+1) via an equation of the form C : z^2 = f(x,y) = f_0 x^n + f_1 x^{n-1} y + ... + f_n y^n where n=2g+2, the coefficients f_i lie in Z, and f factors into distinct linear factors over Q-bar. Define the height H(C) of C by H(C):=max{|f_i|}, and order all hyperelliptic curves over Q of genus g by height. Then we prove that, as g tends t…
We present algorithms for computing the squared Weil and Tate pairings on elliptic curves and the squared Tate pairing for hyperelliptic curves. The squared pairings introduced in this paper have the advantage that our algorithms for evaluating them are deterministic and do not depend on a random choice of points. Our pairings save about 20-30% over the usual pairings.
We consider the problem of efficient computation in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 defined over a field whose characteristic is not 2. For curves with a rational Weierstrass point, fast explicit formulas are well known and widely available. Here we address the general case, in which we do not assume the existence of a rational Weierstrass point, using a balanced divisor approach.
We describe an algorithm that computes explicit models of hyperelliptic Shimura curves attached to an indefnite quaternion algebra over Q and Atkin-Lehner quotients of them. It exploits Cerednik-Drinfeld's non-archimedean uniformisation of Shimura curves, a formula of Gross and Zagier for the endomorphism ring of Heegner points over Artinian rings and the connection between Ribet's bimodules and the specialization of Heegner points. As an application, we provide a list of equations of Shimura curves and quotients of them obtained by our algorithm that had been conjectured by Kurihara.
Let C/Q be a curve of genus three, given as a double cover of a plane conic. Such a curve is hyperelliptic over the algebraic closure of Q, but may not have a hyperelliptic model of the usual form over Q. We describe an algorithm that computes the local zeta functions of C at all odd primes of good reduction up to a prescribed bound N. The algorithm relies on an adaptation of the "accumulating remainder tree" to matrices with entries in a quadratic field. We report on an implementation, and compare its performance to previous algorithms for the ordinary hyperelliptic case.
Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of good reduction defined over a discrete valuation field K with algebraically closed residue field k. Assume moreover that char k \ne 2. Given d \in K^*\K^*2, we introduce an explicit description of the minimal regular model of the quadratic twist of C by d. As an application, we show that if C/Q is a nonsingular hyperelliptic curve given by y^2 = f(x) with f an irreducible polynomial, there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C which are not everywhere locally soluble.
The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture has been numerically verified for the Jacobians of 32 modular hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 by Flynn, Leprévost, Schaefer, Stein, Stoll and Wetherell, using modular methods. In the calculation of the real period, there is a slight inaccuracy, which might give problems for curves with non-reduced components in the special fibre of their Néron model. In this present paper we explain how the real period can be computed, and how the verification has been extended to many more hyperelliptic curves, some of genus 3, 4 and 5, without using modular methods.
It is known that for a smooth hyperelliptic curve to have a large $a$-number, the genus must be small relative to the characteristic of the field, $p>0$, over which the curve is defined. It was proven by Elkin that for a genus $g$ hyperelliptic curve $C$ to have $a_C=g-1$, the genus is bounded by $g<\frac{3p}{2}$. In this paper, we show that this bound can be lowered to $g <p$. The method of proof is to force the Cartier-Manin matrix to have rank one and examine what restrictions that places on the affine equation defining the hyperelliptic curve. We then use this bound to summarize what is kn…
In this work, we investigate hyperelliptic curves of type $C: y^2 = x^{2g+1} + ax^{g+1} + bx$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q, q = p^n, p > 2$. For the case of $g = 3$ and $4$ we propose algorithms to compute the number of points on the Jacobian of the curve with complexity $\tilde{O}(\log^4{p})$ and $\tilde{O}(\log^8{p})$. For curves of genus $2-7$ we give a complete list of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius endomorphism modulo $p$.
We prove that there are only finitely many modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ which are hyperelliptic. In odd characteristic we give a complete classification of such curves.
We apply classical invariant theory of binary forms to explicitly characterize isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves of small genus and, conversely, propose algorithms for reconstructing hyperelliptic models from given invariants. We focus on genus 3 hyperelliptic curves. Both geometric and arithmetic aspects are considered.
We show that for any elliptic curve (with j invariant not 0 or 1728) over any field of characteristic different from 2 and 3, there exists an hyperelliptic curve H of genus 5 with two independent maps to the given elliptic curve. We also show that, if we want such a curve to be just geometrically hyperelliptic, so having a degree two map to a conic, then there are some with genus 3.
In this paper we consider the question of whether there exists a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ which is defined over $\FF_q$ but has no rational points over $\FF_q$ for various pairs $(g,q)$.
This paper, pursuing the work started in [10] and [11], holds six new formulae for π, see equations, through ratios of first kind elliptic integrals and some values of hypergeometric functions of three or four variables of Lauricella type. This will be accomplished by reducing some hyperelliptic integrals to elliptic by the methods taught by Legendre in his treatise. Eventually, evaluating some hyperelliptic integrals by means of hypergeometric Lauricella functions, we obtain some further evaluations of themselves in some particular points and also in their analytic continuation.
We study the Newton polygons of numerators of the zeta functions of $2$-rank $0$ hyperelliptic curves in characteristic $2$. We determine their first generic vertex, and their first vertex in some other non generic cases.
We find a closed formula for the number $\operatorname{hyp}(g)$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over a finite field $k=\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic. These numbers $\operatorname{hyp}(g)$ are expressed as a polynomial in $q$ with integer coefficients that depend on the set of divisors of $q-1$ and $q+1$. As a by-product we obtain a closed formula for the number of self-dual curves of genus $g$. A hyperelliptic curve is self-dual if it is $k$-isomorphic to its own hyperelliptic twist.
We propose a solution to the hyperelliptic Schottky problem, based on the use of Jacobian Nullwerte and symmetric models for hyperelliptic curves. Both ingredients are interesting on its own, since the first provide period matrices which can be geometrically described, and the second have remarkable arithmetic properties.
Let F be an algebraically closed field with char(F) not equal to 2, let F/K be a Galois extension, and let X be a hyperelliptic curve defined over F. Let ιbe the hyperelliptic involution of X. We show that X can be defined over its field of moduli relative to the extension F/K if Aut(X)/<ι> is not cyclic. We construct explicit examples of hyperelliptic curves not definable over their field of moduli when Aut(X)/<ι> is cyclic.
We compute the Galois groups for a certain class of polynomials over the the field of rational numbers that was introduced by S. Mori and study the monodromy of corresponding hyperelliptic jacobians.
This paper presents algorithmic approaches to study superspecial hyperelliptic curves. The algorithms proposed in this paper are: an algorithm to enumerate superspecial hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$, and an algorithm to compute the automorphism group of a (not necessarily superspecial) hyperelliptic curve over finite fields. The first algorithm works for any $(g,q)$ such that $q$ and $2g+2$ are coprime and $q>2g+1$. As an application, we enumerate superspecial hyperelliptic curves of genus $g=4$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ for $11 \leq p \leq 23$ and over $\math…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We propose an algorithm for computing rational representations of isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves via-adic differential equations with a sharp analysis of the loss of precision. Consequently, after having possibly lifted the problem in the $p$-adics, we derive fast algorithms for computing explicitly Cantor's division polynomials of hyperelliptic curves defined over finite fields.
We discuss the computation of coefficients of the L-series associated to a hyperelliptic curve over Q of genus at most 3, using point counting, generic group algorithms, and p-adic methods.
In this paper we obtain conditions on the divisors of the group order of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic genus 2 curve, generated by the complex multiplication method described by Weng (2003) and Gaudry (2005). Examples, where these conditions imply that the Jacobian has a large cyclic subgroup, are given.
We show how to speed up the computation of isomorphisms of hyperelliptic curves by using covariants. We also obtain new theoretical and practical results concerning models of these curves over their field of moduli.
We prove results about the intersection of the p-rank strata and the boundary of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves in characteristic p > 2. Using this, we prove that the Z/\ell-monodromy of every irreducible component of the stratum H_g^f of hyperelliptic curves of genus g and p-rank f is the symplectic group Sp_{2g}(Z/\ell) if g > 2, f > 0 and \ell is an odd prime distinct from p. These results yield applications about the generic behavior of hyperelliptic curves of given genus and p-rank. The first application is that a generic hyperelliptic curve of genus g > 2 and p-rank 0 is not su…
We compute the $\integ/\ell$ and $\integ_\ell$ monodromy of every irreducible component of the moduli spaces of hyperelliptic and trielliptic curves. In particular, we provide a proof that the $\integ/\ell$ monodromy of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ is the symplectic group $\sp_{2g}(\integ/\ell)$. We prove that the $\integ/\ell$ monodromy of the moduli space of trielliptic curves with signature $(r,s)$ is the special unitary group $\su_{(r,s)}(\integ/\ell\tensor\integ[ζ_3])$.
We prove two related concentration inequalities concerning the number of rational points of hyperelliptic curves over subsets of a finite field. In particular, we investigate the probability of a large discrepancy between the numbers of quadratic residues and non-residues in the image of such subsets over uniformly random hyperelliptic curves of given degrees. We find a constant probability of such a high difference and show the existence of sets with an exceptionally large discrepancy.
We determine all modular curves X(N) (with $N\geq 7$) which are hyperelliptic or bielliptic. We make available a proof that the automorphism group of X(N) coincides with the normalizer of $Γ(N)$ in $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$.
In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser fo…
We describe an algorithm to compute the local component at p of the Coleman-Gross p-adic height pairing on divisors on hyperelliptic curves. As the height pairing is given in terms of a Coleman integral, we also provide new techniques to evaluate Coleman integrals of meromorphic differentials and present our algorithms as implemented in Sage.
One of the big questions in the area of curves over finite fields concerns the distribution of the numbers of points: Which numbers occur as the number of points on a curve of genus $g$? The same question can be asked of various subclasses of curves. In this article we classify the possibilities for the number of points on genus 4 hyperelliptic supersingular curves over finite fields of order $2^n$, $n$ odd.
We assemble and reorganize the recent work in the area of hyperelliptic pairings: We survey the research on constructing hyperelliptic curves suitable for pairing-based cryptography. We also showcase the hyperelliptic pairings proposed to date, and develop a unifying framework. We discuss the techniques used to optimize the pairing computation on hyperelliptic curves, and present many directions for further research.
In $2000$, Colliot-Thélène and Poonen showed how to construct algebraic families of genus one curves violating the Hasse principle. Poonen explicitly constructed an algebraic family of genus one cubic curves violating the Hasse principle using the general method developed by Colliot-Thélène and himself. The main result in this paper generalizes the result of Colliot-Thélène and Poonen to arbitrarily high genus hyperelliptic curves. More precisely, for $n > 5$ and $n \not\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, we show that there is an algebraic family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $n$ that is counterexamples to…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and be an integer coprime to $p$. We survey an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of $(\ell,...,\ell)$-isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus over an extension $K$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}\_p$. The algorithm has a quasi-linear complexity in $\ell$ as well as in the genus of the curves.
This paper examines the relationship between the automorphism group of a hyperelliptic curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic two and the 2-rank of the curve. In particular, we exploit the wild ramification to use the Deuring-Shafarevich formula in order to analyze the ramification of hyperelliptic curves that admit extra automorphisms and use this data to impose restrictions on the genera and 2-ranks of such curves. We also show how some of the techniques and results carry over to the case where our base field is of characteristic $p>2$.
