38 pages. Submitted version. This version improves substantially, in many ways, the unpublished previous version arXiv:0801.1054. In particular, Masser's lower bound for non-torsion points is replaced by Bosser-Gaudron's lower bound. The analytic estimates on the L-function, as well as the part relying the Tamagawa numbers and the Faltings' height were also substantially modified
We consider an abelian variety defined over a number field. We give conditional bounds for the order of its Tate-Shafarevich group, as well as conditional bounds for the Néron-Tate height of generators of its Mordell-Weil group. The bounds are implied by strong but nowadays classical conjectures, such as the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and the functional equation of the L-series. In particular, we improve and generalise a result by D. Goldfeld and L. Szpiro on the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group, and extends a conjecture of S. Lang on the canonical height of a system of generators of the free part of the Mordell-Weil group. The method is an extension of the algorithm proposed by Yu. Manin for finding a basis for the non-torsion rational points of an elliptic curve defined over the rationals.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ where $p$ splits completely. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at all primes above $p$. Generalizing previous works of Kobayashi and Sprung, we define multiply signed Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a finite extension $F$ of $K$ where $p$ is unramified. Under the hypothesis that the Pontryagin duals of these Selmer groups are torsion over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ over a subextension of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension are bounded. Furthermore,…
We characterize quadratic twists of $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x+b^2)$ with Mordell-Weil groups and $2$-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate groups being isomorphic to $(\mathb Z/2\mathbb Z)^2$ under certain conditions. We also obtain the distribution result of these elliptic curves.
We study a subclass of congruent elliptic curves $E^{(n)}: y^2=x^3-n^2x$, where $n$ is a positive integer congruent to $1\pmod 8$ with all prime factors congruent to $1\pmod 4$. We characterize such $E^{(n)}$ with Mordell-Weil rank zero and $2$-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate group isomorphic to $\big(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z \big)^2$. We also discuss such $E^{(n)}$ with 2-primary part of Shafarevich-Tate group isomorphic to $\big(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z \big)^{2k}$ with $k\ge2$.
On the Selmer groups and Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x \pm p) (x \pm q) $ over imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one
There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
A conjecture of Mordell states that if $p$ is a prime and $p$ is congruent to $3$ mod $4$, then $p$ does not divide $y$ where $(x,y)$ is the fundamental solution to $x^{2}-py^{2}=1$. The conjecture has been verified for primes not exceeding $10^{7}$. In this article, we show that Mordell's conjecture holds for four conjecturally infinite families of primes.
Constructing non-trivial elements of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an Abelian Variety over a Number Field
Explicit descent in the Picard group of a cyclic cover of the projective line
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $F_{\infty}$ a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $F$ which has ordinary reduction at every primes above $p$. Under various assumptions, we establish asymptotic upper bounds for the growth of Mordell-Weil rank of the abelian variety of $A$ in the said $p$-adic Lie extension. Our upper bound can be expressed in terms of invariants coming from the cyclotomic level. Motivated by this formula, we make a conjecture on an asymptotic upper bound of the growth of Mordell-Weil ranks over a $p$-adic Lie extension which is in terms…
This master thesis describes how Selmer groups can be used to determine the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic curves over a number field K. The Mordell-Weil Theorem states that $E(K) = E(K)_{tors} \times Z^r$, where $r$ is the rank of $E$, and $E(K)_{tors}$ is the torsion subgroup, i.e. the group of points of finite order in $E(K)$. The group $E(K)_{tors}$ is finite and well understood. So, one tries to find a way to determine the rank $r$ of $E$, which is the major problem. The procedure described in this thesis shows how to transfer the computation of the weak Mordell-Weil group $E(K)/mE(K)$ to…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$. We prove a control theorem for the fine Selmer group of the abelian variety $A$ which essentially says that the kernel and cokernel of the natural restriction maps in a given $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ are finite and bounded. We emphasise that our result does not have any constraints on the reduction of $A$ and the ramification of $F_\infty/F$. As a first consequence of the control theorem, we show that the fine Tate-Shafarevich group over an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has trivial $Λ$-corank. We then derive an as…
The Mordell conjecture: origins, approaches, generalizations -- The Mordell conjecture predicts that a diophantine equation defining a smooth projective curve of genus at least two has only finity many solutions in a given number field. The century that ran since its statement, in 1922, gave rise to several approaches, several proofs, and vast extensions most of which are still conjectural. This text is based on the oral presentation and aims at recalling this story. La conjecture de Mordell prédit qu'une équation diophantienne définissant une courbe projective lisse de genre au moins deux n'a…
We give an effective proof of Faltings' theorem for curves mapping to Hilbert modular stacks over odd-degree totally real fields. We do this by giving an effective proof of the Shafarevich conjecture for abelian varieties of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type over an odd-degree totally real field. We deduce for example an effective height bound for $K$-points on the curves $C_a : x^6 + 4y^3 = a^2$ ($a\in K^\times$) when $K$ is odd-degree totally real. (Over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ all hyperbolic hyperelliptic curves admit an étale cover dominating $C_1$.)
We study the behavior under twisting of the Selmer rank parities of a self-dual prime-degree isogeny on a principally polarized abelian variety defined over a number field, subject to compatibility relations between the twists and the isogeny. In particular, we study isogenies on abelian varieties whose Selmer rank parities are related to the rank parities of elliptic curves with $j$-invariant 0 or 1728, assuming the Shafarevich-Tate conjecture. Using these results, we show how to classify the conjectural rank parities of all quartic or sextic twists of an elliptic curve defined over a number …
We state a conjectural criterion for identifying global integral points on a hyperbolic curve over $\mathbb{Z}$ in terms of Selmer schemes inside non-abelian cohomology functors with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_p$-unipotent fundamental groups. For $\mathbb{P}^1\setminus \{0,1,\infty\}$ and the complement of the origin in semi-stable elliptic curves of rank 0, we compute the local image of global Selmer schemes, which then allows us to numerically confirm our conjecture in a wide range of cases.
Hindry has proposed an analogue of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem for abelian varieties over global fields. Roughly speaking, it says that the product of the regulator of the Mordell-Weil group and the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group should have size similar to the exponential differential height. Hindry-Pacheco and Griffon have proved this for certain families of elliptic curves over function fields using analytic techniques. Our goal in this work is to prove similar results by more algebraic arguments, namely by a direct approach to the Tate-Shafarevich group and the regulator. We r…

We prove some new results on the arithmetic of abelian varieties over function fields of one variable over finitely generated (infinite) fields. Among other things, we introduce certain new natural objects `discrete Selmer groups' and `discrete Shafarevich-Tate groups', and prove that they are finitely generated $\Bbb Z$-modules. Further, we prove that in the isotrivial case, the discrete Shafarevich-Tate group vanishes and the discrete Selmer group coincides with the Mordell-Weil group. One of the key ingredients to prove these results is a new specialisation theorem à la Néron for first Galo…
Let $X$ be a curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over a number field $F$ of degree $d = [F:Q]$. The conjectural existence of a uniform bound $N(g,d)$ on the number $\#X(F)$ of $F$-rational points of $X$ is an outstanding open problem in arithmetic geometry, known by [CHM97] to follow from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture. A related conjecture posits the existence of a uniform bound $N_{{\rm tors},\dagger}(g,d)$ on the number of geometric torsion points of the Jacobian $J$ of $X$ which lie on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. For fixed $X$ this quantity was conjectured to be finite by Manin--Mumfor…
Let $\mathbb{F}_r$ be a finite field of characteristic $p>3$. For any power $q$ of $p$, consider the elliptic curve $E=E_{q,r}$ defined by $y^2=x^3 + t^q -t$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_r(t)$. We describe several arithmetic invariants of $E$ such as the rank of its Mordell--Weil group $E(K)$, the size of its Néron--Tate regulator $\text{Reg}(E)$, and the order of its Tate--Shafarevich group $III(E)$ (which we prove is finite). These invariants have radically different behaviors depending on the congruence class of $p$ modulo 6. For instance $III(E)$ either has trivial $p$-part or is a $p$-group. On the…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a global function field $K$ of characteristic $p$. We study the $μ$-invariant appearing in the Iwasawa theory of $A$ over the unramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. Ulmer suggests that this invariant is equal to what he calls the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ and that it is indeed the dimension of some canonically defined group scheme. Our first result is to verify his suggestions. He also gives a formula for the dimension of the Tate-Shafarevich group (which is now the $μ$-invariant) in terms of other quantities including the Faltings h…
