We show that there exist genus one curves of every index over the rational numbers, answering affirmatively a question of Lang and Tate. The proof is "elementary" in the sense that it does not assume the finiteness of any Shafarevich-Tate group. On the other hand, using Kolyvagin's construction of a rational elliptic curve whose Mordell-Weil and Shafarevich-Tate groups are both trivial, we show that there are infinitely many curves of every index over every number field.
The period of a curve is the smallest positive degree of Galois-invariant divisor classes. The index is the smallest positive degree of rational divisors. We construct examples of genus one curves with prescribed period and index over certain number fields.
We resolve a 1983 question of Serre by constructing curves with many points of every genus over every finite field. More precisely, we show that for every prime power q there is a positive constant c_q with the following property: for every non-negative integer g, there is a genus-g curve over F_q with at least c_q * g rational points over F_q. Moreover, we show that there exists a positive constant d such that for every q we can choose c_q = d * (log q). We show also that there is a constant c > 0 such that for every q and every n > 0, and for every sufficiently large g, there is a genus-g cu…
Given a curve $C$ over a field $K$, the period of $C/K$ is the gcd of degrees of $K$-rational divisor classes, while the index is the gcd of degrees of $K$-rational divisors. S. Lichtenbaum showed that the period and index must satisfy certain divisibility conditions. For given admissible period, index, and genus, we show that there exists a curve $C$ and a number field $K$ with these desired invariants, as long as the index is not divisible by $4$.
In this paper we advance the theory of O'Neil's period-index obstruction map and derive consequences for the arithmetic of genus one curves over global fields. Our first result implies that for every pair of positive integers (P,I) with P dividing I and I dividing P^2, there exists a number field K and a genus one curve C over K with period P and index I. Second, let E be any elliptic curve over a global field K, and let P > 1 be any integer indivisible by the characteristic of K. We construct infinitely many genus one curves C over K with period P, index P^2, and Jacobian E. We deduce strong …
Every nontrivial abelian variety over a Hilbertian field in which the weak Mordell-Weil theorem holds admits infinitely many torsors with period any $n > 1$ which is not divisible by the characteristic. The corresponding statement with "period" replaced by "index" is plausible but much more challenging. We show that for every infinite, finitely generated field $K$, there is an elliptic curve $E_{/K}$ which admits infinitely many torsors with index any $n > 1$.
We present an index calculus algorithm with double large prime variation which lends itself well to a rigorous analysis. Using this algorithm we prove that for fixed genus $g \geq 2$, the discrete logarithm problem in degree 0 class groups of non-singular curves over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ can be solved in an expected time of $\tilde{O}(q^{2-2/g})$, provided that the curve is given by a plane model of bounded degree and the degree 0 class group is cyclic. The result generalizes a previous result for hyperelliptic curves given by an imaginary Weierstraß equation obtained by Gaudry, Thomé,…
We show all the possible structures of finite subgroups of the automorphism groups of elliptic curves. Here the automorphism means the biholomorphic transformation. Using the result, we determine every Galois group G at outer Galois point for genus-one curve with singular points. In particular, if G is abelian, then its order is at most nine. However if not so, the order is unbounded. Furthermore, we give every defining equation of the curve with the Galois point in the case where G is abelian.
Let N_q(g) denote the maximal number of F_q-rational points on any curve of genus g over the finite field F_q. Ihara (for square q) and Serre (for general q) proved that limsup_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/g > 0 for any fixed q. In their proofs they constructed curves with many points in infinitely many genera; however, their sequences of genera are somewhat sparse. In this paper, we prove that lim_{g-->infinity} N_q(g) = infinity. More precisely, we use abelian covers of P^1 to prove that liminf_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/(g/log g) > 0, and we use curves on toric surfaces to prove that liminf_{g-->infty}…
We prove that every lens space contains a genus one homologically fibered knot, which is contrast to the fact that some lens spaces contain no genus one fibered knot. In the proof, the Chebotarev density theorem and binary quadratic forms in number theory play a key role. We also discuss the Alexander polynomial of homologically fibered knots.
We study the question of whether algebraic curves of a given genus g defined over a field K must have points rational over the maximal abelian extension K^{ab} of K. We give: (i) an explicit family of diagonal plane cubic curves with Q^{ab}-points, (ii) for every number field K, a genus one curve C_{/Q} with no K^{ab}-points, and (iii) for every g \geq 4 an algebraic curve C_{/Q} of genus g with no Q^{ab}-points. In an appendix, we discuss varieties over Q((t)), obtaining in particular a curve of genus 3 without (Q((t)))^{ab}-points.
For every finite collection C of abelian varieties over F_q, we produce an explicit upper bound on the genus of curves over F_q whose Jacobians are isogenous to a product of powers of elements of C.
We consider the proportion of genus one curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the form $z^2=f(x,y)$ where $f(x,y)\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ is a binary quartic form (or more generally of the form $z^2+h(x,y)z=f(x,y)$ where also $h(x,y)\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ is a binary quadratic form) that have points everywhere locally. We show that the proportion of these curves that are locally soluble, computed as a product of local densities, is approximately 75.96%. We prove that the local density at a prime $p$ is given by a fixed degree-$9$ rational function of $p$ for all odd $p$ (and for the generalised equation, the sa…
We prove that if q is a power of an odd prime then there is no genus-2 curve over F_q whose Jacobian has characteristic polynomial of Frobenius equal to x^4 + (2-2q)x^2 + q^2. Our proof uses the Brauer relations in a biquadratic extension of Q to show that every principally polarized abelian surface over F_q with the given characteristic polynomial splits over F_{q^2} as a product of polarized elliptic curves.
Let $k$ be a rational congruence function field and consider an arbitrary finite separable extension $K/k$. If for each prime in $k$ ramified in $K$ we have that at least one ramification index is not divided by the characteristic of $K$, we find the genus field $\g K$, except for constants, of the extension $K/k$. In general, we describe the genus field of a global function field.
We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators…
Using class field theory one associates to each curve C over a finite field, and each subgroup G of its divisor class group, unramified abelian covers of C whose genus is determined by the index of G. By listing class groups of curves of small genus one may get examples of curves with many points; we do this for all curves of genus 2 over the fields of cardinality 5,7,9,11,13 and 16, giving new entries for the tables of curves with many points (www.manYPoints.org).
A projective, smooth, absolutely irreducible algebraic curve X of genus g defined over a finite field F_q is called optimal if for every other such genus g curve Y over F_q one has $\#Y(F_q)\le \#X(F_q)$. In this paper we show that for $g\le 5$ there is a unique optimal genus g curve over F_2. For g=6 there are precisely two and for g=7 there are at least two.
We introduce the notion of isolated genus two curves. As there is no known efficient algorithm to explicitly construct isogenies between two genus two curves with large conductor gap, the discrete log problem (DLP) cannot be efficiently carried over from an isolated curve to a large set of isogenous curves. Thus isolated genus two curves might be more secure for DLP based hyperelliptic curve cryptography. We establish results on explicit expressions for the index of an endomorphism ring in the maximal CM order, and give conditions under which the index is a prime number or an almost prime numb…
In this paper we develop techniques for computing the relative Brauer group of curves, focusing particularly on the case where the genus is 1. We use these techniques to show that the relative Brauer group may be infinite (for certain ground fields) as well as to determine this group explicitly for certain curves defined over the rational numbers. To connect to previous descriptions of relative Brauer groups in the literature, we describe a family of genus 1 curves, which we call "cyclic type" for which the relative Brauer group can be shown to have a particularly nice description. In order to…
In closed string vacua, ergodicity of unipotent flows provide a key for relating vacuum stability to the UV behavior of spectra and interactions. Infrared finiteness at all genera in perturbation theory can be rephrased in terms of cancelations involving only tree-level closed strings scattering amplitudes. This provides quantitative results on the allowed deviations from supersymmetry on perturbative stable vacua. From a mathematical perspective, diagrammatic relations involving closed string amplitudes suggest a relevance of unipotent flows dynamics for the Schottky problem and for the const…
We prove that every Brauer class over a field splits over a torsor under an abelian variety. If the index of the class is not congruent to 2 modulo 4, we show that the Albanese variety of any smooth curve of positive genus that splits the class also splits the class, and there exist many such curves splitting the class. We show that this can be false when the index is congruent to 2 modulo 4, but adding a single genus 1 factor to the Albanese suffices to split the class.
We consider the moduli space of abelian varieties with two marked points and a frame of the relative de Rham cohomolgy with boundary at these points compatible with its mixed Hodge structure. Such a moduli space gives a natural algebro-geometric framework for higher genus quasi Jacobi forms of index zero and their differential equations which are given as vector fields. In the case of elliptic curves we compute explicitly the Gauss-Manin connection and such vector fields.
Up to isomorphism over C, every simple principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 3 is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve of genus 3. Furthermore, this curve is either a hyperelliptic curve or a plane quartic. Given a sextic CM field K, we show that if there exists a hyperelliptic Jacobian with CM by K, then all principally polarized abelian varieties that are Galois conjugated to it are hyperelliptic. Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we give an algorithm for computing approximations of the invariants of the initial curve, as well as their Galois conjugates. This allows us ton d…
We describe the use of explicit isogenies to translate instances of the Discrete Logarithm Problem (DLP) from Jacobians of hyperelliptic genus 3 curves to Jacobians of non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curves, where they are vulnerable to faster index calculus attacks. We provide explicit formulae for isogenies with kernel isomorphic to $(\ZZ/2\ZZ)^3$ (over an algebraic closure of the base field) for any hyperelliptic genus 3 curve over a field of characteristic not 2 or 3. These isogenies are rational for a positive fraction of all hyperelliptic genus 3 curves defined over a finite field of character…
We study the relationship between the period and the index of a principal homogeneous space over an abelian variety, obtaining results which generalize work of Cassels and Lichtenbaum on curves of genus one. In addition, we show that the p-torsion in the Shafarevich-Tate group of a fixed abelian variety over a number field k grows arbitrarily large when considered over field extensions l/k of bounded degree. Essential use is made of an abelian variety version of O'Neil's period-index obstruction.
