We give a new formula for the special value at s=2 of the Hasse-Weil zeta function for smooth projective fourfolds under some assumptions (the Tate and Beilinson conjecture, finiteness of some cohomology groups, etc.). Our formula may be considered as a generalization of the Artin-Tate(-Milne) formula for smooth surfaces, and expresses the special zeta value almost exclusively in terms of inner geometric invariants such as higher Chow groups (motivic cohomology groups). Moreover we compare our formula with Geisser's formula for the same zeta value in terms of Weil-étale motivic cohomology groups, and as a consequence (under additional assumptions) we obtain some presentations of weight two Weil-étale motivic cohomology groups in terms of higher Chow groups and unramified cohomology groups.
We study various families of Artin $L$-functions attached to geometric parametrizations of number fields. In each case we find the Sato-Tate measure of the family and determine the symmetry type of the distribution of the low-lying zeros.
Recently N. Levin (Comp. Math. 127 (2001), 1--21) proved the Tate conjecture for ordinary cubic fourfolds over finite fields. In this paper we prove the Tate conjecture for self-products of ordinary cubic fourfolds. Our proof is based on properties of so called polynomials of K3 type introduced by the author (Duke Math. J. 72 (1993), 65--83).
We prove a 1966 conjecture of Tate concerning the Artin-Tate pairing on the Brauer group of a surface over a finite field, which is the analogue of the Cassels-Tate pairing. Tate asked if this pairing is always alternating and we find an affirmative answer, which is somewhat surprising in view of the work of Poonen-Stoll on the Cassels-Tate pairing. Our method is based on studying a connection between the Artin-Tate pairing and (generalizations of) Steenrod operations in étale cohomology. Inspired by an analogy to the algebraic topology of manifolds, we develop tools allowing us to calculate t…
We introduce a new class of exponentials of Artin-Hasse type, called $\boldsymbolπ$-exponentials. These exponentials depends on the choice of a generator $\boldsymbolπ$ of the Tate module of a Lubin-Tate group $\mathfrak{G}$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. They arise naturally as solutions of solvable differential modules over the Robba ring. If $\mathfrak{G}$ is isomorphic to $\hat{\mathbb{G}}_m$ over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, we develop methods to test their over-convergence, and get in this way a stronger version of the Frobenius structure theorem for differential equations. We define a natural transformation o…
This is an investigation into the possible existence and consequences of a Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer-type formula for L-functions of elliptic curves twisted by Artin representations. We translate expected properties of L-functions into purely arithmetic predictions for elliptic curves, and show that these force some peculiar properties of the Tate-Shafarevich group, which do not appear to be tractable by traditional Selmer group techniques. In particular we exhibit settings where the different p-primary components of the Tate-Shafarevich group do not behave independently of one another. We also gi…
We formulate (and prove under a certain assumption) a conjecture relating the order of Somekawa's Milnor $K$-group attached to a torus $T$ and the value of the Artin $L$-function attached to the cocharacter group of $T$ (regarded as an Artin representation) at $s=-1$. The case $T=\G_m$ reduces to the classical Birch-Tate conjecture.
Following the natural instinct that when a group operates on a number field then every term in the class number formula should factorize `compatibly' according to the representation theory (both complex and modular) of the group, we are led to some natural questions about the $p$-part of the classgroup of any CM Galois extension of $\Q$ as a module for $\Gal(K/Q)$, in the spirit of Herbrand-Ribet's theorem on the $p$-component of the class number of $Q(ζ_p)$. In trying to formulate these questions, we are naturally led to consider $L(0,ρ)$, for $ρ$ an Artin representation, in situations where …
We construct a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and their formal models such that the middle cohomology of their reductions realizes the local Langlands correspondence and the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for the simple supercuspidal representations. The reductions of the formal models are isomorphic to the perfections of some Artin-Schreier varieties, whose cohomology realizes primitive Galois representations. We show also the Tate conjecture for Artin-Schreier varieties associated to quadratic forms.
Artin's conjecture states that supersingular K3 surfaces over finite fields have Picard number 22. In this paper, we prove Artin's conjecture over fields of characteristic p>3. This implies Tate's conjecture for K3 surfaces over finite fields of characteristic p>3. Our results also yield the Tate conjecture for divisors on certain holomorphic symplectic varieties over finite fields, with some restrictions on the characteristic. As a consequence, we prove the Tate conjecture for cycles of codimension 2 on cubic fourfolds over finite fields of characteristic p>3.
Using Borevich's system of generators and relations, the classical Artin-Hasse formula is obtained from scratch in the case when taking $p$-th root of the second argument of the Hilbert symbol gives an unramified $p$-extension of the same degree of irregularity. Under the same assumptions, in the case of Lubin-Tate formal groups, an expression for the Hilbert symbol is obtained in terms of the expansion of elements by the same system of generators.
In this paper we give some evidence for the Tate (and Hodge) conjecture(s) for a class of Hilbert modular fourfolds X, whose connected components arise as arithmetic quotients of the fourfold product of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups Γof SL(2, O_K), where O_K denotes the ring of integers of a quartic, Galois, totally real number field K. The expected relationship to the orders of poles of the associated L-functions is verified for abelian extensions of \Q. Also shown is the existence of homologically non-trivial cycles of codimension two which are not intersections of divisors.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $Q$, and $τ$ an Artin representation over $Q$ that factors through the non-abelian extension $Q(\sqrt[p^n]{m},μ_{p^n})/Q$, where $p$ is an odd prime and $n,m$ are positive integers. We show that $L(E,τ,1)$, the special value at $s=1$ of the $L$-function of the twist of $E$ by $τ$, divided by the classical transcendental period $Ω_{+}^{d^+}|Ω_{-}^{d^-}|ε(τ)$ is algebraic and Galois-equivariant, as predicted by Deligne's conjecture.
Let $\mathcal X$ be a regular variety, flat and proper over a complete regular curve over a finite field, such that the generic fiber $X$ is smooth and geometrically connected. We prove that the Brauer group of $\mathcal X$ is finite if and only Tate's conjecture for divisors on $X$ holds and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Albanese variety of $X$ is finite, generalizing a theorem of Artin and Grothendieck for surfaces to arbitrary relative dimension. We also give a formula relating the orders of the group under the assumption that they are finite, generalizing the formula given for a surfac…
This article surveys some recent work of the author on Hilbert modular fourfolds X. After some preliminaries on the cohomology and special, codimension 2 cycles Z on X of Hirzebruch-Zagier type, a proof of the Tate conjecture for X over abelian fields is exposed. It is followed by a description of a method to construct classes in the Bloch's Chow group CH^3(X,1) by using Hecke translates of the cycles Z as above with suitable intersections in translates of modular curves. The article ends with the introduction of a modular Gersten complex for a general Shimura variety X and the corresponding g…
We consider refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type for the Hasse-Weil-Artin L-series of abelian varieties over general number fields. We shall, in particular, formulate several new such conjectures and establish their precise relation to previous conjectures, including to the relevant special case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. We also derive a wide range of concrete interpretations and explicit consequences of these conjectures that, in general, involve a thoroughgoing mixture of difficult archimedean considerations related to refinements of the conjecture of De…
Beginning with the conjecture of Artin and Tate in 1966, there has been a series of successively more general conjectures expressing the special values of the zeta function of an algebraic variety over a finite field in terms of other invariants of the variety. In this article, we present the ultimate such conjecture, and provide evidence for it. In particular, we enhance Voevodsky's Z[1/p]-category of etale motivic complexes with a p-integral structure, and show that, for this category, our conjecture follows from the Tate and Beilinson conjectures. As the conjecture is stated in terms of mot…
Since the development of higher local class field theory, several explicit reciprocity laws have been constructed. In particular, there are formulas describing the higher-dimensional Hilbert symbol given, among others, by M. Kurihara, A. Zinoviev and S. Vostokov. K. Kato also has explicit formulas for the higher-dimensional Kummer pairing associated to certain (one-dimensional) $p$-divisible groups. In this paper we construct an explicit reciprocity law describing the Kummer pairing associated to any (one-dimensional) formal group. The formulas are a generalization to higher-dimensional local …
For a prime number p and a number field k, we first study certain etale cohomology groups with coefficients associated to a p-adic Artin representation of its Galois group, where we twist the coefficients using a modified Tate twist with a p-adic index. We show that those groups are cofinitely generated and explicitly compute an additive Euler characteristic. When k is totally real and the representation is even, we relate the order of vanishing of the p-adic L-function at a point of its domain and the corank of such a cohomology group with a suitable p-adic twist. If the groups are finite, th…
