In this paper we give some evidence for the Tate (and Hodge) conjecture(s) for a class of Hilbert modular fourfolds X, whose connected components arise as arithmetic quotients of the fourfold product of the upper half plane by congruence subgroups Γof SL(2, O_K), where O_K denotes the ring of integers of a quartic, Galois, totally real number field K. The expected relationship to the orders of poles of the associated L-functions is verified for abelian extensions of \Q. Also shown is the existence of homologically non-trivial cycles of codimension two which are not intersections of divisors.
We study the degree of the special cubic fourfolds in the Hilbert scheme of cubic fourfolds via a computation of the generating series of Heegner divisors of even lattice of signature (2, 20).
This article surveys some recent work of the author on Hilbert modular fourfolds X. After some preliminaries on the cohomology and special, codimension 2 cycles Z on X of Hirzebruch-Zagier type, a proof of the Tate conjecture for X over abelian fields is exposed. It is followed by a description of a method to construct classes in the Bloch's Chow group CH^3(X,1) by using Hecke translates of the cycles Z as above with suitable intersections in translates of modular curves. The article ends with the introduction of a modular Gersten complex for a general Shimura variety X and the corresponding g…
We study universal families of stable genus two curves with level structure. Among other things, it is shown that the (1,1) part is spanned by divisor classes, and that there are no cycles of type (2,2) in the third cohomology of the first direct image. Using this, we deduce the Hodge and Tate conjectures hold for these varieties.
We study algebras of meromorphic modular forms whose poles lie on Heegner divisors for orthogonal and unitary groups associated to root lattices. We give a uniform construction of $147$ hyperplane arrangements on type IV symmetric domains for which the algebras of modular forms with constrained poles are free and therefore the Looijenga compactifications of the arrangement complements are weighted projective spaces. We also construct $8$ free algebras of modular forms on complex balls with poles on hyperplane arrangements. The most striking example is the discriminant kernel of the $2U\oplus D…

We give congruences modulo powers of 2 for the Fourier coefficients of certain level 2 modular functions with poles only at 0, answering a question posed by Andersen and the first author. The congruences involve a modulus that depends on the binary expansion of the modular form's order of vanishing at $\infty$.
We give congruences modulo powers of $p \in \{3, 5,7\}$ for the Fourier coefficients of certain modular functions in level $p$ with poles only at 0, answering a question posed by Andersen and the first author and continuing work done by the authors and Moss. The congruences involve a modulus that depends on the base $p$ expansion of the modular form's order of vanishing at $\infty$.
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields, and let $\ell$ be a prime number different from the residual characteristic of $F$. For a complex cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL(n,E)$, the Asai $L$-factor $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is $GL(n,F)$-distinguished. In this paper we solve the problem of characterising the occurrence of a pole at $X=1$ of $L^+(X,π)$ when $π$ is an $\ell$-modular cuspidal representation of $GL(n,E)$: we show that $L^+(X,π)$ has a pole at $X=1$ if and only if $π$ is a relatively banal distinguished representation; namely $π$…
Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli, i.e., the sums of the values of the classical j-invariant over quadratic irrationalities, are the Fourier coefficients of a modular form of weight 3/2 with poles at the cusps. Using the theta correspondence, we generalize this result to traces of CM values of (weakly holomorphic) modular functions on modular curves of arbitrary genus. We also study the theta lift for the weight 0 Eisenstein series for SL(2,Z) and realize a certain generating series of arithmetic intersection numbers as the derivative of Zagier's Eisenstein series of weight 3/2.…
This paper gives a quick way to construct all modular functions for the group $Γ_0(N)$ having only a pole at $τ= i \infty$. We assume that we are given two modular functions $f,g$ for $Γ_0(N)$ with poles only at $i \infty$ and coprime pole orders. As an application we obtain two new identities from which one can derive that $p(11n+6)\equiv 0\pmod{11}$, here $p(n)$ is the usual partition function.
We show that the values of a certain family of weakly holomorphic modular functions at points in the divisors of any meromorphic modular form with algebraic Fourier coefficients are algebraic. We use this to extend the classical result of Schneider by proving that zeros or poles of any non-zero meromorphic modular form with algebraic Fourier coefficients are either transcendental or imaginary quadratic irrational.
We show that a weakly holomorphic modular function can be written as a sum of modular units of higher level. We further find a necessary and sufficient condition for a Siegel modular function of degree $g$ to have neither zero nor pole on the domain when restricted to certain subset of the Siegel upper half-space $\mathbb{H}_g$.
We prove divisibility results for the Fourier coefficients of canonical basis elements for the spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight $0$ and levels $6, 10, 12, 18$ with poles only at the cusp at infinity. In addition, we show that these Fourier coefficients satisfy Zagier duality in all weights, and give a general formula for the generating functions of such canonical bases for all genus zero levels.
We study Hilbert modular forms in characteristic $p$ and over $p$-adic rings. In the characteristic $p$-theory we describe the kernel and image of the $q$-expansion map and prove the existence of filtration for Hilbert modular forms; we define operators $U$, $V$ and $Θ_χ$ and study the variation of the filtration under these operators. In particular, we prove that every ordinary eigenform has filtration in a prescribed box of weights. Our methods are geometric -- comparing holomorphic Hilbert modular forms with rational functions on a moduli scheme with level-$p$ structure, whose poles are sup…
We examine canonical bases for weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight $0$ and level $p = 2, 3, 5, 7, 13$ with poles only at the cusp at $\infty$. We show that many of the Fourier coefficients for elements of these canonical bases are divisible by high powers of $p$, extending results of the first author and Andersen. Additionally, we prove similar congruences for elements of a canonical basis for the space of modular functions of level $4$, and give congruences modulo arbitrary primes for coefficients of such modular functions in levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 13.
In this paper we construct the modular Cauchy kernel $Ξ_N(z_1, z_2)$, i.e. the modular invariant function of two variables, $(z_1, z_2) \in \mathbb{H} \times \mathbb{H}$, with the first order pole on the curve $$D_N=\left\{(z_1, z_2) \in \mathbb{H} \times \mathbb{H}|~ z_2=γz_1, ~γ\in Γ_0(N) \right\}.$$ The function $Ξ_N(z_1, z_2)$ is used in two cases and for two different purposes. Firstly, we prove generalization of the Zagier theorem ([La], [Za3]) for the Hecke subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ of genus $g>0$. Namely, we obtain a kind of "kernel function" for the Hecke operator $T_N(m)$ on the space of th…
In this work we use the Rankin-Selberg method to obtain results on the analytic properties of the standard $L$-function attached to vector valued Siegel modular forms. In particular we provide a detailed description of its possible poles and obtain a non-vanishing result of the twisted $L$-function beyond the usual range of absolute convergence. We remark that these results were known in this generality only in the case of scalar weight Siegel modular forms. As an interesting by-product of our work we establish the cuspidality of some theta series.
The denominator formula for the Monster Lie algebra is the product expansion for the modular function $j(z)-j(τ)$ given in terms of the Hecke system of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$-modular functions $j_n(τ)$. It is prominent in Zagier's seminal paper on traces of singular moduli, and in the Duncan-Frenkel work on Moonshine. The formula is equivalent to the description of the generating function for the $j_n(z)$ as a weight 2 modular form with a pole at $z$. Although these results rely on the fact that $X_0(1)$ has genus 0, here we obtain a generalization, framed in terms of polar harmonic …
We give a Rankin-Selberg integral representation for the Spin (degree eight) $L$-function on $\mathrm{PGSp}_6$. The integral applies to the cuspidal automorphic representations associated to Siegel modular forms. If $π$ corresponds to a level one Siegel modular form $f$ of even weight, and if $f$ has a non-vanishing maximal Fourier coefficient (defined below), then we deduce the functional equation and finiteness of poles of the completed Spin $L$-function $Λ(π,Spin,s)$ of $π$.
We study families of metrics on automorphic vector bundles associated to representations of the modular group. These metrics are defined using an Eisenstein series construction. We show that in certain cases, the residue of these Eisenstein metrics at their rightmost pole is a harmonic metric for the underlying representation of the modular group. The last section of the paper considers the case of a family of representations that are indecomposable but not irreducible. The analysis of the corresponding Eisenstein metrics, and the location of their rightmost pole, is an open question whose res…
We define canonical real analytic versions of modular forms of integral weight for the full modular group, generalising real analytic Eisenstein series. They are harmonic Maass waveforms with poles at the cusp, whose Fourier coefficients involve periods and quasi-periods of cusp forms, which are conjecturally transcendental. In particular, we settle the question of finding explicit `weak harmonic lifts' for every eigenform of integral weight $k$ and level one. We show that mock modular forms of integral weight are algebro-geometric and have Fourier coefficients proportional to $n^{1-k}(a'_n + …
The denominator formula for the Monster Lie algebra is the product expansion for the modular function $j(z)-j(τ)$ in terms of the Hecke system of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-modular functions $j_n(τ)$. This formula can be reformulated entirely number-theoretically. Namely, it is equivalent to the description of the generating function for the $j_n(z)$ as a weight 2 modular form in $τ$ with a pole at $z$. Although these results rely on the fact that $X_0(1)$ has genus 0, here we obtain a generalization, framed in terms of polar harmonic Maass forms, for all of the $X_0(N)$ modular curves.…
For any square-free integer $N$ such that the "moonshine group" $Γ_0(N)^+$ has genus zero, the Monstrous Moonshine Conjectures relate the Hauptmoduli of $Γ_0(N)^+$ to certain McKay-Thompson series associated to the representation theory of the Fischer-Griess monster group. In particular, the Hauptmoduli admits a $q$-expansion which has integer coefficients. In this article, we study the holomorphic function theory associated to higher genus moonshine groups $Γ_0(N)^+$. For all moonshine groups of genus up to and including three, we prove that the corresponding function field admits two generat…
We define L-functions for meromorphic modular forms that are regular at cusps, and use them to: (i) find new relationships between Hurwitz class numbers and traces of singular moduli, (ii) establish predictions from the physics of T-reflection, and (iii) express central charges in two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFT) as a literal sum over the states in the CFTs spectrum. When a modular form has an order-$p$ pole away from cusps, its $q$-series coefficients grow as $n^{p-1} e^{2 πn t}$ for $t \geq \sqrt{3}/2$. Its L-function must be regularized. We define such L-functions by a defo…
A generalized modular relation of the form $F(z, w, α)=F(z, iw,β)$, where $αβ=1$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$, is obtained in the course of evaluating an integral involving the Riemann $Ξ$-function. It is a two-variable generalization of a transformation found on page $220$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook. This modular relation involves a surprising generalization of the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s, a)$, which we denote by $ζ_w(s, a)$. While $ζ_w(s, 1)$ is essentially a product of confluent hypergeometric function and the Riemann zeta function, $ζ_w(s, a)$ for $0<a<1$ is an interesting new special function. …
Following the natural instinct that when a group operates on a number field then every term in the class number formula should factorize `compatibly' according to the representation theory (both complex and modular) of the group, we are led to some natural questions about the $p$-part of the classgroup of any CM Galois extension of $\Q$ as a module for $\Gal(K/Q)$, in the spirit of Herbrand-Ribet's theorem on the $p$-component of the class number of $Q(ζ_p)$. In trying to formulate these questions, we are naturally led to consider $L(0,ρ)$, for $ρ$ an Artin representation, in situations where …
Let F be a number field with adele ring A_F, and πan isobaric, algebraic automorphic representation of GL_4(A_F) of a fixed archimedean weight, which is quasi-regular, meaning that at every archimedean place v of F, the 4-dimensional representation σ_v of the Weil group W_{F_v} attached to π_v is multiplicity free. Suppose there is an associated 4-dimensional, Hodge-Tate p-adic representation ρof the absolute Galois group G_F, whose local L-factors agree with those of π(up to a shift) at almost all primes P of F. Then our first result is that the semisimplification of ρdoes not contain any irr…
