In a previous article, we have proved a result asserting the existence of a compatible family of Galois representations containing a given crystalline irreducible odd two-dimensional representation. We apply this result to establish new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, namely, an irreducible Barsotti-Tate $λ$-adic 2-dimensional Galois representation unramified at 3 and such that the traces $a_p$ of the images of Frobenii verify $\Q(\{a_p^2 \}) = \Q $ always comes from an abelian variety. We also show the non-existence of irreducible Barsotti-Tate 2-dimensional Galois representations of conductor 1 and apply this to the irreducibility of Galois representations on level 1 genus 2 Siegel cusp forms.
This is an updated and extended version of ANT-0024. We prove more special cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture regarding p-adic Galois representations unramified at p, and we present evidence for and consequences of a generalization of it.
Fontaine and Mazur conjecture that a number field k has no infinite unramified Galois extension such that its Galois group is a p-adic analytic pro-p-group. We consider this conjecture for the maximal unramified p-extension of a CM-field k.
We prove new cases of Fontaine-Mazur conjecture on two-dimensional Galois representations over Q when the residual representation is reducible. Our approach is via a semi-simple local-global compatibility of the completed cohomology and a Taylor-Wiles patching argument for the completed homology in this case. As a key input, we generalize the work of Skinner-Wiles in the ordinary case. In addition, we also treat the residually irreducible case at the end of the paper. Combining with people's earlier work, we can prove the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture completely in the regular case when p is at le…
We prove some cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture for even Galois representations. In particular, we prove, under mild hypotheses, that there are no irreducible two-dimensional ordinary even Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ with distinct Hodge-Tate weights. If $K/\Q$ is an imaginary quadratic field, we also prove (again, under certain hypotheses) that $\Gal(\Qbar/K)$ does not admit irreducible two-dimensional ordinary Galois representations of non-parallel weight. Finally, we prove that any weakly compatible family of two dimensional irreducible Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qb…
We prove, under mild hypotheses, that there are no irreducible two-dimensional_even_ Galois representations of $\Gal(\Qbar/\Q)$ which are de Rham with distinct Hodge--Tate weights. This removes the "ordinary" hypothesis required in previous work of the author. We construct examples of irreducible two-dimensional residual representations that have no characteristic zero geometric (= de Rham) deformations.
Let p be an odd prime, let S be a finite set of primes q congruent to 1 mod p but not mod p^2 and let G_S be the Galois group of the maximal p-extension of Q un-ramified outside of S. If r is a continuous homomorphism of G_S into GL_2(Z_p) then under certain conditions on the linking numbers of S we show that r=1 if its reduction mod p is 1. We also show that the reduction of r mod p is 1 if r can be put in triangular form mod p^3.
We estimate the proportion of function fields satisfying certain conditions which imply a function-field analogue of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. As a byproduct, we compute the fraction of abelian varieties (or even Jacobians) over a finite field which have a rational point of order l.
In this note we prove the non existence of certain irreducible two dimensional representations of the the absolute Galois group. Such results are predicted by Serre's conjecture and we use Fontaine's methods to verify these predictions in a small number of cases. We also use a methods of Faltings to study certain finiteness conjectures for Galois representations. Key words: Serre's conjecture, Fontaine-Mazur conjectures, Galois representations.
Suppose $K$ is unramified over $\mathbb Q _p$ and $Γ_K=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar K/K)$. Let $H$ be a torsion $Γ_K$-equivariant subquotient of crystalline $\mathbb Q _p[Γ_K]$-module with HT weights from $[0,p-2]$. We give a new proof of Fontaine's conjecture about the triviality of action of some ramification subgroups $Γ_K^{(v)}$ on $H$. The earlier author's proof from [1] contains a gap and proves this conjecture only for some subgroups of index $p$ in $Γ_K^{(v)}$.
Let $F_{\wp}$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. By considering partially de Rham families, we establish a Colmez-Greenberg-Stevens formula (on Fontaine-Mazur $\mathcal{L}$-invariants) for (general) $2$-dimensional semi-stable non-crystalline $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/F_{\wp})$-representations. As an application, we prove local-global compatibility results for completed cohomology of quaternion Shimura curves, and in particular the equality of Fontaine-Mazur $\mathcal{L}$-invariants and Breuil's $\mathcal{L}$-invariants, in critical case.
We prove that the ramification filtration of the absolute Galois group of a comlete discrete valuation field with perfect residue field is characterized in terms of Fontaine's property (Pm).
Mazur's principle gives a criterion under which an irreducible mod l Galois representation arising from a classical modular form of level Np (with p prime to N) also arises from a classical modular form of level N. We consider the analogous question for Galois representations arising from certain unitary Shimura varieties. In particular, we prove an analoge of Mazur's principle for U(2,1) Shimura varities. We also give a conjectural criterion for a Galois representation arising in the cohomology of a unitary Shimura variety whose level subgroup is parahoric at p to also arise in the cohomology…
For a representation of the absolute Galois group of the rationals over a finite field of characteristic $p$, we study the existence of a lift to characteristic zero that is geometric in the sense of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. For two-dimensional representations, Ramakrishna proved that under technical assumptions odd representations admit geometric lifts. We generalize this to higher dimensional orthogonal and symplectic representations. A key step is generalizing and studying a local deformation condition at $p$ arising from Fontaine-Laffaille theory.
We study the module of universal norms associated with a de Rham $p$-adic Galois representation in a perfectoid field extension. In particular, we compute precisely this module when the Hodge-Tate weights of a representation are greater than or equal to $0$. This generalises a result by Coates and Greenberg for Abelian varieties, and partially answers a question of theirs. Our method relies on the classification of vector bundles over the Fargues-Fontaine curve.
Under the assumption of the Hodge, Tate and Fontaine-Mazur conjectures we give a criterion for a compatible system of l-adic representations to be isomorphic to the second cohomology of a K3 surface.
In this paper we show that under certain condition the Fontaine--Mazur $L$-invariant for a Hilbert eigenform coincides with its Teitelbaum type $L$-invariant, and thus prove a conjecture of Chida, Mok and Park.
We give a new proof of the properness of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve. The question of whether the eigencurve satisfies the valuative criterion for properness was first asked by Coleman and Mazur in 1998 and settled by Diao and Liu in 2016 using deep, powerful Hodge- and Galois- theoretic machinery. Our proof is short and explicit and uses no Galois theory. Instead we adapt an earlier method of Buzzard and Calegari based on elementary properties of overconvergent modular forms. To facilitate this, we extend Pilloni's geometric construction of overconvergent forms of arbitrary weight farther in…
In this note we complement a part of a theorem of Fontaine-Mazur. We show that if $(V,ρ)$ is an irreducible finite dimensional representation of the Galois group $Gal({\bar K}/K)$ of a finite extension of $K\Q_p$, of Hodge-Tate type $(0,1)$ then it is potentially semi-stable if and only if it is potentially crystalline. This was proved by Fontaine-Mazur for dimension two and $p\geq 5$ by their classfication theorem.
We describe the generic blocks in the category of smooth locally admissible mod $2$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_2)$. As an application we obtain new cases of Breuil--Mézard and Fontaine--Mazur conjectures for $2$-dimensional $2$-adic Galois representations.
We prove that there is no geometric $p$-adic representation of the Galois group of $\Q$ which is irreducible, of dimension 2, of conductor 1 and low weight, according to a conjecture of Fontaine and Mazur.
We define a derived version of Mazur's Galois deformation ring. It is a pro-simplicial ring $\mathcal{R}$ classifying deformations of a fixed Galois representation to simplicial coefficient rings; its zeroth homotopy group $π_0 \mathcal{R}$ recovers Mazur's deformation ring. We give evidence that these rings $\mathcal{R}$ occur in the wild: For suitable Galois representations, the Langlands program predicts that $π_0 \mathcal{R}$ should act on the homology of an arithmetic group. We explain how the Taylor--Wiles method can be used to upgrade such an action to a graded action of $π_* \mathcal{R…
The classification of the local Galois representations using $(φ,Γ)$-modules by Fontaine has been generalized by Kisin and Ren over the Lubin-Tate extensions of local fields using the theory of $(φ_q,Γ_{LT})$-modules. In this paper, we extend the work of (Fontaine) Herr by introducing a complex which allows us to compute cohomology over the Lubin-Tate extensions and compare it with the Galois cohomology groups. We further extend that complex to include certain non-abelian extensions. We then deduce some relations of this cohomology with those arising from $(ψ_q,Γ_{LT})$-modules. We also comput…
Nigel Boston and Barry Mazur have shown how to determine the natural subspaces of certain S_3-extensions of the rationals, which they term "generic". We extend some of their results to another class of extensions, called "degenerate".
We prove in this paper an uniform surjectivity result for Galois representations associated with non-CM $\mathbb{Q}$-curves over imaginary quadratic fields, using various tools for the proof, such as Mazur's method, isogeny theorems, Runge's method and analytic estimates of sums of $L$-functions.
Let $k/\mathbb F_p$ denote a finite field. For any split connected reductive group $G/W(k)$ and certain CM number fields $F$, we deform certain Galois representations $\overlineρ:Gal(\overline F/F) \to G(k)$ to continuous families $X_{\overlineρ}$ of Galois representations $Gal(\overline F/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb Q_p})$ lifting $\overlineρ$ such that the space of points of $X_{\overlineρ}$ which are geometric (in the sense of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture) with parallel Hodge-Tate weights has positive codimension in $X_{\overlineρ}$. Thus the set of points in $X_{\overlineρ}$ which could (c…
This paper treats what we call `weak geometric liftings' of Galois representations associated to abelian varieties. This notion can be seen as a generalization of the idea of lifting a Galois representation along an isogeny of algebraic groups. The weaker notion only takes into account an isogeny of the derived groups and disregards the centres of the groups in question. The weakly lifted representations are required to be geometric in the sense of a conjecture of Fontaine and Mazur. The conjecture in question states that any irreducible geometric representation is a twist of a subquotient of …
For the $p$-cyclotomic tower of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ Fontaine established a description of local Iwasawa cohomology with coefficients in a local Galois representation $V$ in terms of the $ψ$-operator acting on the attached etale $(φ,Γ)$-module $D(V)$. In this article we generalize Fontaine's result to the case of arbitratry Lubin-Tate towers $L_\infty$ over finite extensions $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ by using the Kisin-Ren/Fontaine equivalence of categories between Galois representations and $(φ_L,Γ_L)$-module and extending parts of [Herr L.: Sur la cohomologie galoisienne des corps $p$-adiques. Bull. S…
We show that suitable congruences between polarized automorphic forms over a CM field always produce elements in the Selmer group for exactly the +/--Asai (aka tensor induction) representation that is critical in the sense of Deligne. For this we relate the oddness of the associated polarized Galois representations (in the sense of the Bellaïche-Chenevier sign being +1) to the parity condition for criticality. Under an assumption similar to Vandiver's conjecture this also provides evidence for the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture for polarized Galois representations of any even dimension.
Let $u_n$ be a nondegenerate Lucas sequence. We generalize the results of Bugeaud, Mignotte, and Siksek, 2006 to give a systematic approach towards the problem of determining all perfect powers in any particular Lucas sequence. We then prove a general bound on admissible prime powers in a Lucas sequence assuming the Frey-Mazur conjecture on isomorphic mod $p$ Galois representations of elliptic curves.
In this paper we study the derivatives of Frobenius and the derivatives of Hodge-Tate weights for families of Galois representations with triangulations. We give a generalization of the Fontaine-Mazur L-invariant and use it to build a formula which is a generalization of the Colmez-Greenberg-Stevens formula.
We prove the Breuil-Mezard conjecture for split non-scalar residual representations of Gal(Qp/Qp) by local methods. Combined with the cases previously proved in [18] and [24], this completes the proof of the conjecture (when p>3). As a consequence, the local restriction in the proof of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture in [18] is removed.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero complete for a discrete valuation, with perfect residue field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $K^+$ be the valuation ring of $K$. We relate the log-crystalline cohomology of the special fibre of certain affine $K^+$-schemes $X=\text{Spec}(R)$ with semi-stable reduction to the Galois cohomology of the fundamental group of the geometric generic fibre $π_1(X_{\bar{K}})$ with coefficients in a Fontaine ring constructed from $R$. This is based on Faltings' theory of almost étale extensions.
The Frey--Mazur conjecture states that an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is determined up to isogeny by its $p$-torsion Galois representation for $p\geq 17$. We study a geometric analog of this conjecture, and show that the map from isogeny classes of "fake elliptic curves"---abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication---to their $p$-torsion Galois representations is one-to-one over function fields of small genus complex curves for sufficiently large $p$ relative to the genus.
In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal{L}$-invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke-eigenvalues in $p$-adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bert…
Building on ideas of Vatsal, Cornut proved a conjecture of Mazur asserting the generic nonvanishing of Heegner points on an elliptic curve E as one ascends the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of a quadratic imaginary extension K/Q. In the present article Cornut's result is extended by replacing the elliptic curve E with the Galois cohomology of Deligne's 2-dimensional l-adic representation attached to a modular form of weight 2k>2, and replacing the family of Heegner points with an analogous family of special cohomology classes.
In this paper we introduce a new method for finding Galois groups by computer. This is particularly effective in the case of Galois groups of p-extensions ramified at finitely many primes but unramified at the primes above p. Such Galois groups have been regarded as amongst the most mysterious objects in number theory. Very little has hitherto been discovered regarding them despite their importance in studying p-adic Galois representations unramified at p. The conjectures of Fontaine-Mazur say that they should have no p-adic analytic quotients (equivalently, the images of the Galois representa…
We review the analog of Fontaine's theory of crystalline $p$-adic Galois representations and their classification by weakly admissible filtered isocrystals in the arithmetic of function fields over a finite field. There crystalline Galois representations are replaced by the Tate modules of so-called local shtukas. We prove that the Tate module functor is fully faithful. In addition to this étale realization of a local shtuka we discuss also the de Rham and the crystalline cohomology realizations and construct comparison isomorphisms between these realizations. We explain how local shtukas and …
Using Calegari's result on the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, we study the irreducibility of pure, regular, rank 3 weakly compatible systems of self-dual l-adic representations. As a consequence, we prove that the Tate conjecture holds for a family of elliptic surfaces defined over Q with geometric genus bigger than 1.
This is is a survey of applications of Fontaine's theory of p-adic representations of local fields (Phi-Gamma-modules) to Galois cohomology of local fields and explicit formulas for the Hilbert symbol in relation with two-dimensional local objects.
We prove a portion of a conjecture of B. Conrad, F. Diamond, and R. Taylor, yielding some new cases of the Fontaine-Mazur conjectures, specifically, the modularity of certain potentially Barsotti-Tate Galois representations. The proof follows the template of Wiles, Taylor-Wiles, and Breuil-Conrad-Diamond-Taylor, and relies on a detailed study of the descent, across tamely ramified extensions, of finite flat group schemes over the integers of a local field. This makes crucial use of the filtered ϕ_1-modules of C. Breuil.
