We consider certain families of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and their mirror partners constructed from Fermat hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-spaces. Our focus is the topological mirror symmetry. There are at least three known ingredients to describe the topological mirror symmetry, namely, integral vertices in reflexive polytopes, monomials in graded polynomial rings (with some group actions), and periods (and Picard-Fuchs differential equations).
In this paper we will introduce Fermat motives associated to these Calabi-Yau orbifolds and then use them to give motivic interpretation of the topological mirror symmetry phenomenon between mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau orbifolds. We establish, at the Fermat (the Landau-Ginzburg) point in the moduli space, the one-to-one correspondence between the monomial classes and Fermat motives. This is done by computing the number of ${\bf F}_q$-rational points on our Calabi-Yau orbifolds over ${\bf F}_q$ in two different ways: Weil's algebraic number theoretic method involving Jacobi (Gauss) sums, and Dwork's $p$-adic analytic method involving Dwork characters and Gauss sums. We will discuss specific examples in detail.
One of the main tools for the study of compact hyperkähler manifolds is the natural action of the Looijenga-Lunts-Verbitsky Lie algebra on the cohomology of such manifolds. This also applies to the mildly singular holomorphic symplectic varieties - hyperkähler orbifolds, allowing us to prove that André motives of such orbifolds tend to be abelian.
Kapustka and Rampazzo have exhibited pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ and $Y$ that are L-equivalent and derived equivalent, without being birational. We complete the picture by showing that $X$ and $Y$ have isomorphic Chow motives.
Ito-Miura-Okawa-Ueda have constructed a pair of Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ and $Y$ that are L-equivalent and derived equivalent, but not stably birational. We complete the picture by showing that $X$ and $Y$ have isomorphic Chow motives.
In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also …
We prove an orbifold Riemann--Roch formula for a polarized 3--fold (X,D). As an application, we construct new families of projective Calabi--Yau threefolds.
We study the Donaldson-Thomas type invariants for the Calabi-Yau threefold Deligne-Mumford stacks under flops. A crepant birational morphism between two smooth Calabi-Yau threefold Deligne-Mumford stacks is called an orbifold flop if the flopping locus is the quotient of weighted projective lines by a cyclic group action. We prove that the Donaldson-Thomas invariants are preserved under orbifold flops.
We identify the twisted sectors of a compact simplicial toric variety. We do the same for a generic nondegenerate Calabi-Yau hypersurface of an $n$-dimensional simplicial Fano toric variety and then explicitly compute $h^{1,1}_{orb}$ and $h^{n-2,1}_{orb}$ for the hypersurface. We give applications to the orbifold string theory conjecture and orbifold mirror symmetry.
We revisit the classical two-dimensional McKay correspondence in two respects: The first one, which is the main point of this work, is that we take into account of the multiplicative structure given by the orbifold product; second, instead of using cohomology, we deal with the Chow motives. More precisely, we prove that for any smooth proper two-dimensional orbifold with projective coarse moduli space, there is an isomorphism of algebra objects, in the category of complex Chow motives, between the motive of the minimal resolution and the orbifold motive. In particular, the complex Chow ring (r…
The modular properties of some higher dimensional varieties of special Fano type are analyzed by computing the L-function of their $Ω-$motives. It is shown that the emerging modular forms are string theoretic in origin, derived from the characters of the underlying rational conformal field theory. The definition of the class of Fano varieties of special type is motivated by the goal to find candidates for a geometric realization of the mirrors of rigid Calabi-Yau varieties. We consider explicitly the cubic sevenfold and the quartic fivefold, and show that their motivic L-functions agree with t…
The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti [arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597] relates all genus open and closed Gromov-Witten invariants of a semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds/3-orbifolds to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of the mirror curve of the toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper, we present a proof of the Remodeling Conjecture for open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of an arbitrary affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifold relative to a framed Aganagic-Vafa Lagrangian brane. This can be viewed as an all genus open-closed mirror symmetry for affin…
We give a classification of smooth complex manifolds with a finite abelian group action, such that the quotient is isomorphic to a projective space. The case where the manifold is a Calabi-Yau is studied in detail.
The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Mariño-Pasquetti (BKMP) [arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597] relates the A-model open and closed topological string amplitudes (the all genus open and closed Gromov-Witten invariants) of a semi-projective toric Calabi-Yau 3-manifold/3-orbifold to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of its mirror curve. It is an all genus open-closed mirror symmetry for toric Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds/3-orbifolds. In this paper, we present a proof of the BKMP Remodeling Conjecture for all genus open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of an arbitrary semi-projectiv…
For any toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifold with transverse A-singularities, we prove Ruan's crepant resolution conjecture and the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence.
In this paper, we study the bigraded vector space structure of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. We prove the formula for the generating function of the Hodge numbers of possibly nonabelian Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. As an application, we calculate the Hodge numbers for all nondegenerate quintic homogeneous polynomials with five variables. These results yield an evidence for the Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence between the Calabi-Yau geometries and the Landau-Ginzburg B-models.
We provide an enumerative meaning of the mirror maps for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds in terms of relative Gromov-Witten invariants of the toric compactifications. As a consequence, we obtain an equality between relative Gromov-Witten invariants and open Gromov-Witten invariants. Therefore, the instanton corrected mirrors for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds can be constructed using relative Gromov-Witten invariants.
We prove a version of homological mirror symmetry statement for toric Calabi-Yau $3$-orbifolds, thus extending arXiv:1604.06448 to the case of orbifolds under the mirror symmetry setting considered in arXiv:1604.07123. The B-model is the matrix factorization category for the toric Calabi-Yau $3$-orbifold with a superpotential; while the A-model is a topologically defined Fukaya-type category on its mirror curve.
We prove a representation-theoretic version of Borisov-Batyrev mirror symmetry, and use it to construct infinitely many new pairs of orbifolds with mirror Hodge diamonds, with respect to the usual Hodge structure on singular complex cohomology. We conjecture that the corresponding orbifold Hodge diamonds are also mirror. When $X$ is the Fermat quintic in $¶^4$, and $\tilde{X}^*$ is a $\Sym_5$-equivariant, toric resolution of its mirror $X^*$, we deduce that for any subgroup $Γ$ of the alternating group $A_5$, the $Γ$-Hilbert schemes $Γ$-$\Hilb(X)$ and $Γ$-$\Hilb(\tilde{X}^*)$ are smooth Calabi…
In this paper, we establish the convergence for Gromov-Witten invariant of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$ with type $(3,3,3), (4,4,2)$ and $(6,3,2)$. We also prove the mirror theorems of Gromov-Witten theory for those orbifolds and FJRW theory of elliptic singularities. Using T.Milanov and Y. Ruan's work, we prove the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence of all genera for the above three types of elliptic orbifold $\mathbb{P}^1$.
We announce a result on quantum McKay correspondence for disc invariants of outer legs in toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds, and illustrate our method in a special example $[\mathbb C^3 /\mathbb Z_5 (1, 1, 3)]$.
This paper presents the current status on modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties since the last update in 2003. We will focus on Calabi-Yau varieties of dimension at most three. Here modularity refers to at least two different types: arithmetic modularity and geometric modularity. These will include: (1) the modularity (automorphy) of Galois representations of Calabi-Yau varieties (or motives) defined over Q or number fields, (2) the modularity of solutions of Picard--Fuchs differential equations of families of Calabi-Yau varieties, and mirror maps (mirror moonshine), (3) the modularity of generat…
We investigate the structure of singular Calabi-Yau varieties in moduli spaces that contain a Brieskorn-Pham point. Our main tool is a construction of families of deformed motives over the parameter space. We analyze these motives for general fibers and explicitly compute the $L-$series for singular fibers for several families. We find that the resulting motivic $L-$functions agree with the $L-$series of modular forms whose weight depends both on the rank of the motive and the degree of the degeneration of the variety. Surprisingly, these motivic $L-$functions are identical in several cases to…
In the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau threefolds, the instanton expansion of the prepotential has a constant term that is a rational multiple of $ζ(3)/(2 πi)^3$, the motivic origin of which has been carefully studied in the author's paper with M. Kim. The Gamma conjecture claims that higher zeta values in fact appear in the theory of Calabi-Yau $n$-folds for $n \geq 4$. Moreover, a natural question is whether they also have a motivic origin. In this paper, we will study the limit mixed Hodge structure (MHS) of the Fermat pencil of Calabi-Yau $n$-folds at the large complex structure limit, which…
Any irreducible Dynkin diagram $Δ$ is obtained from an irreducible Dynkin diagram $Δ_h$ of type $\mathrm{ADE}$ by folding via graph automorphisms. For any simple complex Lie group $G$ with Dynkin diagram $Δ$ and compact Riemann surface $Σ$, we give a Lie-theoretic construction of families of quasi-projective Calabi-Yau threefolds together with an action of graph automorphisms over the Hitchin base associated to the pair $(Σ, G)$ . These give rise to Calabi-Yau orbifolds over the same base. Their intermediate Jacobian fibration, constructed in terms of equivariant cohomology, is isomorphic to t…
Let X/G be a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifold with codimension 2 singularities. The topology of crepant resolutions of X/G is described by the McKay correspondence (Reid, Ito). We study Calabi-Yau 3-folds Y that arise by deforming the complex structure of X/G. The McKay correspondence does not hold for such Y. We describe the topology of Y using the `Weyl group' of the singular set of X/G. Even in simple examples, this can give many different ways to desingularize X/G. It would be interesting to interpret these results in String Theory, which should lead to a generalization of the idea of orb…
Let S be a K3 surface that admits a non-symplectic automorphism $ρ$ of order 3. We divide $S\times \mathbb{P}^1$ by $ρ\timesψ$ where $ψ$ is an automorphism of order 3 of $\mathbb{P}^1$. There exists a threefold ramified cover of a partial crepant resolution of the quotient that is a Calabi-Yau orbifold. We compute the Euler characteristic of our examples and obtain values ranging from 30 to 219.
We generalize the cohomological mirror duality of Borcea and Voisin in any dimension and for any number of factors. Our proof applies to all examples which can be constructed through Berglund-Hübsch duality. Our method is a variant of the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence of Calabi-Yau orbifolds with an involution that does not preserve the volume form. We deduce a version of mirror duality for the fixed loci of the involution, which are beyond the Calabi-Yau category and feature hypersurfaces of general type.
We present an orbifold topological vertex formalism for PT invariants of toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds with transverse $A_{n-1}$ singularities. We give a proof of the orbifold DT/PT Calabi-Yau topological vertex correspondence. As an application, we derive an explicit formula for the PT $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$-vertex in terms of loop Schur functions and prove the multi-regular orbifold DT/PT correspondence.
We provide a comprehensive summary of concepts from Calabi-Yau motives relevant to the computation of multi-loop Feynman integrals. From this we derive several consequences for multi-loop integrals in general, and we illustrate them on the example of multi-loop banana integrals. For example, we show how Griffiths transversality, known from the theory of variation of mixed Hodge structures, leads quite generically to a set of quadratic relations among maximal cut integrals associated to Calabi-Yau motives. These quadratic relations then naturally lead to a compact expression for $l$-loop banana…
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
We consider certain $K3$-fibered Calabi--Yau threefolds. One class of such Calabi--Yau threefolds are constructed by Hunt and Schimmrigk using twist maps. They are realized in weighted projective spaces as orbifolds of hypersurfaces. Our main goal of this paper is to investigate arithmetic properties of these Calabi--Yau threefolds. We also consider deformations of our Calabi--Yau threefolds, and we study the variation of the zeta-functions using $p$-adic rigid cohomology theory.
We discuss aspects of the algebraic geometry of compact non-commutative Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this setting, it is appropriate to consider local holomorphic algebras which can be glued together into a compact Calabi-Yau algebra. We consider two examples: a toroidal orbifold T^6/Z_2 x Z_2, and an orbifold of the quintic in CP_4, each with discrete torsion. The non-commutative geometry tools are enough to describe various properties of the orbifolds. First, one describes correctly the fractionation of branes at singularities. Secondly, for the first example we show that one can recover explici…
The theory of coverings of the two-dimensional torus is a standard part of algebraic topology and has applications in several topics in string theory, for example, in topological strings. This paper initiates applications of this theory to the counting of orbifolds of toric Calabi-Yau singularities, with particular attention to Abelian orbifolds of C^D. By doing so, the work introduces a novel analytical method for counting Abelian orbifolds, verifying previous algorithm results. One identifies a p-fold cover of the torus T^{D-1} with an Abelian orbifold of the form C^D/Z_p, for any dimension …
Starting from the Kähler moduli space of the rigid orbifold Z=E^3/\mathbb{Z}_3 one would expect for the cohomology of the generalized mirror to be a Hodge structure of Calabi-Yau type (1,9,9,1). We show that such a structure arises in a natural way from rational Hodge structures on Λ^3 \mathbb{K}^6, \mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Q}[ω], where ωis a primitive third root of unity. We do not try to identify an underlying geometry, but we show how special geometry arises in our abstract construction. We also show how such Hodge structure can be recovered as a polarized substructure of a bigger Hodge structure…
Given a smooth projective variety $M$ endowed with a faithful action of a finite group $G$, following Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Fantechi-Göttsche, we define the orbifold motive (or Chen-Ruan motive) of the quotient stack $[M/G]$ as an algebra object in the category of Chow motives. Inspired by Ruan, one can formulate a motivic version of his Cohomological HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture. We prove this motivic version, as well as its K-theoretic analogue conjectured by Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura, in two situations related to an abelian surface $A$ and a positive integer $n$. Case (A) concerns Hi…
We study open-closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stacks (with possibly non-trivial generic stabilizers and semi-projective coarse moduli spaces) relative to Lagrangian branes of Aganagic-Vafa type. We present foundational materials of enumerative geometry of stable holomorphic maps from bordered orbifold Riemann surfaces to a 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau smooth toric DM stack with boundaries mapped into a Aganagic-Vafa brane. All genus open-closed Gromov-Witten invariants are defined by torus localization and depend on the choice …
We algebraically prove K-stability of polarized Calabi-Yau varieties and canonically polarized varieties with mild singularities. In particular, the} "stable varieties" introduced by Kollar-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev, which form compact moduli space, are proven to be K-stable although it is well known that they are \textit{not} necessarily asymptotically (semi)stable. As a consequence, we have orbifold counterexamples, to the folklore conjecture "K-stability implies asymptotic stability". They have Kahler-Einstein (orbifold) metrics so the result of Donaldson does not hold for orbifolds.
We construct Calabi-Yau 3-folds as orbifolds embedded in weighted projective space in codimension 4. For each Hilbert series that is realised, there are at least two different components of Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
For a toric Calabi-Yau (CY) orbifold $\mathcal{X}$ whose underlying toric variety is semi-projective, we construct and study a non-toric Lagrangian torus fibration on $\mathcal{X}$, which we call the Gross fibration. We apply the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) recipe to the Gross fibration of $\mathcal{X}$ to construct its mirror with the instanton corrections coming from genus 0 open orbifold Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants, which are virtual counts of holomorphic orbi-disks in $\mathcal{X}$ bounded by fibers of the Gross fibration. We explicitly evaluate all these invariants by first proving an o…
We consider Calabi-Yau $n$-folds $X$ arising from certain hyperplane arrangements. Using Fu-Vial's theory of distinguished cycles for varieties with motive of abelian type, we show that the subring of the Chow ring of $X$ generated by divisors, Chern classes and intersections of subvarieties of positive codimension injects into cohomology. We also prove Voisin's conjecture for $X$, and Voevodsky's smash-nilpotence conjecture for odd-dimensional $X$.
We observe that the state space of Landau-Ginzburg isolated singularities is simply a special case of Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology relative to the generic fibre of the potential. This leads to the definition of the cohomology of hybrid Landau-Ginzburg models and its identification via an explicit isomorphism to the cohomology of Calabi-Yau complete intersections inside weighted projective spaces. The combinatorial method used in the case of hypersurfaces proven by the first named author in collaboration with Ruan is streamlined and generalised after an orbifold version of the Thom isomorphism…
We show that Calabi-Yau spaces with certain types of hypersurface- quotient singularities have unobstructed deformations. This applies in particular to all Calabi-Yau orbifolds nonsingular in codimension 2.
The Remodeling Conjecture proposed by Bouchard-Klemm-Mariño-Pasquetti (BKMP) relates the A-model open and closed topological string amplitudes (open and closed Gromov-Witten invariants) of a symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold to Eynard-Orantin invariants of its mirror curve. The Remodeling Conjecture can be viewed as a version of all genus open-closed mirror symmetry. The SYZ conjecture explains mirror symmetry as $T$-duality. After a brief review on SYZ mirror symmetry and mirrors of symplectic toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds, we give a non-technical exposition of our results on the Remodeling C…
We study a conjecture, due to Voisin, on 0-cycles on varieties with $p_g=1$. Using Kimura's finite dimensional motives and recent results of Vial's on the refined (Chow-)Künneth decomposition, we provide a general criterion for Calabi-Yau manifolds of dimension at most $5$ to verify Voisin's conjecture. We then check, using in most cases some cohomological computations on the mirror partners, that the criterion can be successfully applied to various examples in each dimension up to $5$.
Given a holomorphic newform $f$ of weight $k$ and with rational coefficients, a question of Mazur and van Straten asks if there is an associated Calabi-Yau variety $X$ over ${\mathbb Q}$ of dimension $k-1$ such that the $\ell$-adic Galois representation of $f$ occurs in the cohomology of $X$ in degree $k-1$. We provide some explicit examples giving a positive answer, and show moreover that such $X$ come equipped with an involution $τ$ acting by $-1$ on $H^0(X, Ω^{k-1})$. We also raise a general question regarding the regular algebraic, (essentially) selfdual cusp forms $π$ on GL$(n)$ with ${\m…
The sphere partition function of Calabi-Yau gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) has been shown to compute the exact Kaehler potential of the Kaehler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau. We propose a universal expression for the sphere partition function evaluated in hybrid phases of Calabi-Yau GLSMs that are fibrations of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds over some base manifold. Special cases include Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric ambient spaces and Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The key ingredients that enter the expression are Givental's I/J-functions, the Gamma class and further data associated to…
