This paper intends to give a mathematical explanation for results on the zeta-function of some families of varieties recently obtained in the context of Mirror Symmetry. In doing so, we obtain concrete and explicit examples for some results recently used in algorithms to count points on smooth hypersurfaces in P^n. In particular, we extend the monomial-motive correspondence of Kadir and Yui and we give explicit solutions to the p-adic Picard-Fuchs equation associated with monomial deformations of Fermat hypersurfaces. As a by-product we obtain Poincare Duality for the Rigid cohomology of certain singular affine varieties.
We study ``forms of the Fermat equation'' over an arbitrary field $k$, i.e. homogenous equations of degree $m$ in $n$ unknowns that can be transformed into the Fermat equation $X_1^m+...+X_n^m$ by a suitable linear change of variables over an algebraic closure of $k$. Using the method of Galois descent, we classify all such forms. In the case that $k$ is a finite field of characteristic greater than $m$ that contains the $m$-th roots of unity, we compute the Galois representation on $l$-adic cohomology (and so in particular the zeta function) of the hypersurface associated to an arbitrary form…
Let $X_λ$ and $X_λ'$ be monomial deformations of two Delsarte hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. In this paper we give a sufficient condition so that their zeta functions have a common factor. This generalises results by Doran, Kelly, Salerno, Sperber, Voight and Whitcher [arXiv:1612.09249], where they showed this for a particular monomial deformation of a Calabi-Yau invertible polynomial. It turns out that our factor can be of higher degree than the factor found in [arXiv:1612.09249].
In this paper, we will define analogues of multiple zeta values by replacing the differential forms defining multiple zeta values with some $\mathbb{Q}$-rational differential forms on the Fermat curve $F_2$ of degree 2 and discuss their arithmetic properties. We also investigate a motivic structure of the motivic periods corresponding to our periods. However, in order to study them, the current theory for motivic zeta elements is insufficient, and it leads us to study the base extension of the space of the motivic periods $\mathcal{H}_4$ of level 4 and its Galois invariant part.
The aim of this paper is to describe explicitly the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the Igusa local zeta function associated to several polynomials. Using resolution of singularities is possible to express the Igusa's local zeta function as a finite sum of p-adic monomial integrals. We compute these monomial integrals using techniques of toroidal geometry. In this way, we obtain an explicit list for the candidates to poles of the local zeta function associated to several polynomials.
In this paper, we show that any polynomial of zeta or $L$-functions with some conditions has infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. This general result has abundant applications. By using the main result, we prove that the zeta-functions associated to symmetric matrices treated by Ibukiyama and Saito, certain spectral zeta-functions and the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions have infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. Moreover, we show that the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Riemann zeta-function is equivalent to the Lindelöf hypothesis for zeta-functions mentioned a…
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and the geometry of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. We will prove that the mirror map of the Dwork family is equal to the period map of the Legendre family. This result provides an interesting explanation to the modularities of counting functions for K3 surfaces from the mirror symmetry point of view. We will also discuss the relations between the arithmetic geometry of smooth fibers of the Fermat pencil (Dwork family) and that of the smooth fibers of the Legendre family, e.g. Shioda-Inose structure…
The purpose of this article is to give an explicit description, in terms of hypergeometric functions over finite fields, of zeta function of a certain type of smooth hypersurfaces that generalizes Dwork family. The point here is that we count the number of rational points employing both character sums and the theory of weights, which enables us to enlighten the calculation of the zeta function.
Jacob's ladders, almost linear increments of the Hardy-Littlewood integral (1918) and their relations to the Selberg's formula (1946) and the Fermat-Wiles theorem
Let $f$ be a function on a finite field $F$. The decomposition of the generalized Fermat variety $X$ defined by the multivariate polynomial of degree $n$, $ϕ(x,y,z)=f(x)+f(y)+f(z)$ in $\Bbb{P}^3(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_2)$, plays a crucial role in the study of almost perfect non-linear (APN) functions and exceptional APN functions. Their structure depends fundamentally on the Fermat varieties corresponding to the monomial functions of exceptional degrees $n=2^k+1$ and $n=2^{2k}-2^k+1$ (Gold and Kasami-Welch numbers, respectively). Very important results for these have been obtained by Janwa, McG…

We define a "period ring-valued beta function" and give a reciprocity law on its special values. The proof is based on some results of Rohrlich and Coleman concerning Fermat curves. We also have the following application. Stark's conjecture implies that the exponential of the derivatives at $s=0$ of partial zeta functions are algebraic numbers which satisfy a reciprocity law under certain conditions. It follows from Euler's formulas and properties of cyclotomic units when the base field is the rational number field. In this paper, we provide an alternative (and partial) proof by using the reci…
Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They were originally defined only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced a definition in even characteristic which yields similar applications. In this paper we show that certain functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ are planar, which proves a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou. The key to our proof is a new result about the $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$-rational points on the degree-$(q-1)$ Fermat curve $x^{q-1}+y^{q-1}=z^{q-1}$.
Let $p$ and $l$ be rational primes such that $l$ is odd and the order of $p$ modulo $l$ is even. For such primes $p$ and $l$, and for $e=l, 2l$, we consider the non-singular projective curves $aY^e = bX^e + cZ^e$ ($abc \neq 0$) defined over finite fields $\mathbf{F}_q$ such that $q=p^α\equiv 1(\bmod {e})$. We see that the Fermat curves correspond precisely to those curves among each class (for $e=l,2l$), that are maximal or minimal over $\mathbf{F}_q$. We observe that each Fermat prime gives rise to explicit maximal and minimal curves over finite fields of characteristic 2. For $e=2l$, we expl…
Using the cohomology theory of Dwork, as developed by Adolphson and Sperber, we exhibit a deterministic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate hypersurface defined over a finite field. This algorithm is particularly well-suited to work with polynomials in small characteristic that have few monomials (relative to their dimension). Our method covers toric, affine, and projective hypersurfaces and also can be used to compute the L-function of an exponential sum.
We study mirror symmetric pairs of Calabi--Yau manifolds over finite fields. In particular we compute the number of rational points of the manifolds as a function of the complex structure parameters. The data of the number of rational points of a Calabi--Yau $X/\mathbb{F}_q$ can be encoded in a generating function known as the congruent zeta function. The Weil Conjectures (proved in the 1970s) show that for smooth varieties, these functions take a very interesting form in terms of the Betti numbers of the variety. This has interesting implications for mirror symmetry, as mirror symmetry exchan…
For a nonzero ideal I of C[x_1,...,x_n], with 0 in supp I, a generalization of a conjecture of Igusa - Denef - Loeser predicts that every pole of its topological zeta function is a root of its Bernstein-Sato polynomial. However, typically only a few roots are obtained this way. Following ideas of Veys, we study the following question. Is it possible to find a collection G of polynomials g in C[x_1,...,x_n], such that, for all g in G, every pole of the topological zeta function associated to I and the volume form gdx on the affine n-space, is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I, and su…
For p prime, we give an explicit formula for Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial mapping f=(f_1,...,f_t): Q_p^n -> Q_p^t, with f_1,...,f_t in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n], and an integration measure on Z_p^n of the form |g(x)||dx|, with g another polynomial in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n]. We treat the special cases of a single polynomial and a monomial ideal separately. The formula is in terms of Newton polyhedra and will be valid for f and g sufficiently non-degenerated over F_p with respect to their Newton polyhedra. The formula is based on, and is a generalization of results of Denef - Hoornaer…
Motivated by a question of Rota, this paper studies the relationship between Rota--Baxter algebras and symmetric related functions. The starting point is the fact that the space of quasi-symmetric functions is spanned by monomial quasi-symmetric functions which are indexed by compositions. When composition is replaced by left weak composition (LWC), we obtain the concept of LWC monomial quasi-symmetric functions and the resulting space of LWC quasi-symmetric functions. In line with the question of Rota, the latter is shown to be isomorphic to the free commutative nonunitary Rota--Baxter algebr…
Denote by $Σn^m$ the sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^m+2^m+\ldots +n^m$. Similarly let $Σ^r n^m$ be the $r$-fold sum of the $m$-th powers of the first $n$ positive integers, defined such that $Σ^0 n^{m}=n^m$, and then recursively by $Σ^{r+1} n^{m}=Σ^{r} 1^{m}+Σ^{r} 2^{m}+\ldots + Σ^{r} n^{m}$. During the early 17th-century, polynomial expressions for the sums $Σ^r n^m$ and their factorisation and polynomial basis representation properties were examined by Johann Faulhaber, who published some remarkable theorems relating to these $r$-fold sums in his Academia Alge…
We associate to any dynamical system with finitely many periodic orbits of each length a collection of possible time-changes of the sequence of periodic point counts that preserve the property of counting periodic points. Intersecting over all dynamical systems gives a monoid of time-changes that have this property for all such systems. We show that the only polynomials lying in this `universally good' monoid are the monomials, and that this monoid is uncountable. Examples give some insight into how the structure of the collection of maps varies for different dynamical systems.
Multiple zeta values have been studied by a wide variety of methods. In this article we summarize some of the results about them that can be obtained by an algebraic approach. This involves "coding" the multiple zeta values by monomials in two noncommuting variables x and y. Multiple zeta values can then be thought of as defining a map ζ: H^0 -> R, where H^0 is the graded rational vector space generated by the "admissible words" of the noncommutative polynomial algebra Q<x,y>. Now H^0 admits two (commutative) products making ζa homomorphism: the shuffle product and the "harmonic" product. The …
