The space ${\mathcal A}$ of almost complex structures on a closed manifold $M$ is studied. A natural parametrization of the space ${\mathcal A}$ is defined. It is shown, that ${\mathcal A}$ is a infinite dimensional complex weak Pseudo-Riemannian manifold. A curvature of the space ${\mathcal A}$ is found. The space ${\mathcal A}_ω$ of associated almost complex structures on a symplectic manifold $M,ω$ and space ${\mathcal AO}$ of orthogonal almost complex structures on a Riemannian manifold $M,g_0$ are considered in more detail.
A four-parametric family of linear connections preserving the almost complex structure is defined on an almost complex manifold with Norden metric. Necessary and sufficient conditions for these connections to be natural are obtained. A two-parametric family of complex connections is studied on a conformal Kähler manifold with Norden metric. The curvature tensors of these connections are proved to coincide.
In this paper we study almost complex and almost para-complex Cayley structures on six-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spheres in the space of purely imaginary octaves of the split Cayley algebra $\mathbf{Ca}'$. It is shown that the Cayley structures are non-integrable, their basic geometric characteristics are calculated. In contrast to the usual Riemann sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$, there exist (integrable) complex structures and para-complex structures on the pseudospheres under consideration.
The present paper aims to study the higher-order complete and vertical lifts of the extended almost complex structures on an extended complex manifold kM. The proposed theorems on the Nijenhuis tensor of an extended almost complex structure Jk on the extended complex manifold kM are proved. Also, a tensor field J~k of type (1,1) is introduced and shows that it is an extended almost complex structure. Finally, the Lie derivative concerning higher-order lifts is studied and basic results on the almost analytic complex vector concerning an extended almost complex structure on kM are investigated.
A Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold is defined as an almost contact complex Riemannian manifold which complex cone is a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold. Explicit compact and non-compact examples are given. A canonical construction producing a Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold from a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold is presented and called an $S^1$-solvable extension.
The space $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\times SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ admits a natural homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian nearly Kaehler structure. We investigate almost complex surfaces in this space. In particular we obtain a complete classification of the totally geodesic almost complex surfaces and of the almost complex surfaces with parallel second fundamental form.
We compute almost-complex invariants $h^{p,0}_{\overline\partial}$, $h^{p,0}_{\text{Dol}}$ and almost-Hermitian invariants $h^{p,0}_{\barδ}$ on families of almost-Kähler and almost-Hermitian $6$-dimensional solvmanifolds. Finally, as a consequence of almost-Kähler identities we provide an obstruction to the existence of a symplectic structure on a given compact almost-complex manifold. Notice that, when $(X,J,g,ω)$ is a compact almost Hermitian manifold of real dimension greater than four, not much is known concerning the numbers $h^{p,q}_{\overline\partial}$.
In this paper, we construct complex metric structures on complex hypersurfaces in hyperkahler manifolds. This construction is that in contact geometry.
We study functionals on the space of almost complex structures on a compact $\mathbb{C}$-manifold, whose variational properties could be used to tackle Yau's Challenge.
We introduce the notion of \emph{biharmonic almost complex structure} on a compact almost Hermitian manifold and we study its regularity and existence in dimension four. First we show that there always exist smooth energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structures for any almost Hermitian structure on a compact almost complex four manifold, and all energy-minimizers form a compact set. Then we study the existence problem when the homotopy class of an almost complex structure is specified. We obtain existence of energy-minimizing biharmonic almost complex structures which depends on the to…
We find geometric conditions on a four-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold under which the almost complex structure is a harmonic map or a minimal isometric imbedding of the manifold into its twistor space.
In this short note, we propose an unified method to derive formulas for derivations conjugated by exponential functions on an almost complex manifold. In v3, we corrected some mistakes in previous versions.
This note is concerned in so called harmonic complex structures introduced by the author previously. I will recall some previous results and emphasize the motivation: Provide an attempt to a fundamental problem in geometry--determining the complex structures on an almost complex manifold. I also discuss the almost-Hermitian case of harmonic complex structures and the connections with balanced structures.
In this paper we consider the existence and regularity of weakly polyharmonic almost complex structures on a compact almost Hermitian manifold $M^{2m}$. Such objects satisfy the elliptic system weakly $[J, Δ^m J]=0$. We prove a very general regularity theorem for semilinear systems in critical dimensions (with \emph{critical growth nonlinearities}). In particular we prove that weakly biharmonic almost complex structures are smooth in dimension four.
We study the space of closed anti-invariant forms on an almost complex manifold, possibly non compact. We construct families of (non integrable) almost complex structures on $\R^4$, such that the space of closed $J$-anti-invariant forms is infinite dimensional, and also $0$- or $1$-dimensional. In the compact case, we construct $6$-dimensional almost complex manifolds with arbitrary large anti-invariant cohomology and a $2$-parameter family of almost complex structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold whose anti-invariant cohomology group has maximum dimension.
We study a special type of almost complex structures, called pure and full and introduced by T.J. Li and W. Zhang, in relation to symplectic structures and Hard Lefschetz condition. We provide sufficient conditions to the existence of the above type of almost complex structures on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. We obtain families of pure and full almost complex structures on compact nilmanifolds and solvmanifolds. Some of these families are parametrized by real 2-forms which are anti-invariant with respect to the almost complex structures.
We show that there is no complex structure in a neighborhood of the space of orthogonal almost complex structures on the sphere $S^{2n}, \ n>1$. The method is to study the first Chern class of vetcor bundle $T^{(1,0)}S^{2n}$.
In this paper we determine the Gray-Hervella classes of the compatible almost complex structures on the twistor spaces of oriented Riemannian four-manifolds considered by G. Deschamps
The almost complex Lie algebroids over smooth manifolds are introduced in the paper. In the first part we give some examples and we obtain a Newlander-Nirenberg type theorem on almost complex Lie algebroids. Next the almost Hermitian Lie algebroids and some related structures on the associated complex Lie algebroid are studied. For instance, we obtain that the $E$-Chern form of $E^{1,0}$ associated to an almost complex connection $\nabla$ on $E$ can be expressed in terms of the matrix $J_ER$, where $J_E$ is the almost complex structure of $E$ and $R$ is the curvature of $\nabla$. Also, we cons…
In this paper we describe the algebra of differential invariants for GL(n,C)-structures. This leads to classification of almost complex structures of general positions. The invariants are applied to the existence problem of higher-dimensional pseudoholomorphic submanifolds.
Following T.-J. Li, W. Zhang [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.], we continue to study the link between the cohomology of an almost-complex manifold and its almost-complex structure. In particular, we apply the same argument in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and the results obtained by D. Sullivan in [Cycles for the dynamical study of foliated manifolds and complex manifolds, Invent. Math.] t…
Four-dimensional, oriented Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ which satisfy the tame-compatible question of Donaldson for all almost complex structures $J$ on $\mathfrak{g}$ are completely described. As a consequence, examples are given of (non-unimodular) four-dimensional Lie algebras with almost complex structures which are tamed but not compatible with symplectic forms.
We give the extension formulae on almost complex manifolds and give decompositions of the extension formulae. As applications, we study $(n,0)$-forms, the $(n,0)$-Dolbeault cohomology group and $(n,q)$-forms on almost complex manifolds.
We define a transverse Dolbeault cohomology associated to any almost complex structure $j$ on a smooth manifold $M$. This we do by extending the notion of transverse complex structure and by introducing a natural j-stable involutive limit distribution with such a transverse complex structure. We relate this transverse Dolbeault cohomology to the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of (M,j) introduced by Cirici and Wilson, showing that the (p,0) cohomology spaces coincide. This study of transversality leads us to suggest a notion of minimally non-integrable almost complex structure.
In 2003, S.-s. Chern began a study of almost-complex structures on the 6-sphere, with the idea of exploiting the special properties of its well-known almost-complex structure invariant under the exceptional group $G_2$. While he did not solve the (currently still open) problem of determining whether there exists an integrable almost-complex structure on the 6-sphere, he did prove a significant identity that resolves the question for an interesting class of almost-complex structures on the 6-sphere.
Isotropic almost complex structures induce a class of Riemannian metrics on tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. In this paper the curvature tensors of these metrics will be calculated.
This paper proves that on any tamed closed almost complex four-manifold $(M,J)$ whose dimension of $J$-anti-invariant cohomology is equal to the self-dual second Betti number minus one, there exists a new symplectic form compatible with the given almost complex structure $J$. In particular, if the self-dual second Betti number is one, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Donaldson for tamed closed almost complex four-manifolds. Our approach is along the lines used by Buchdahl to give a unified proof of the Kodaira conjecture.
In this paper we introduce radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric. The study of these hypersurfaces is motivated by the fact that for indefinite almost Hermitian manifolds this class of lightlike hypersurfaces does not exist. We also establish that radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces of almost complex manifolds with Norden metric have nice properties as a unique screen distribution and a symmetric Ricci tensor of the considered hypersurfaces of Kaehler manifolds with Norden metric. We obtain new results about lightlike hypersurfaces c…
This article deals with 3-forms on 6-dimensional manifodls, the first dimension where the classification of 3-forms is not trivial. There are three classes of multisymplectic 3-forms there. We study the class which is closely related to almost complex structures.
We discuss the integrability of orthogonal almost complex structures on Riemannian products of even-dimensional round spheres and give a partial answer to the question raised by E. Calabi concerning the existence of complex structures on a product manifold of a round 2-sphere and a round 4-sphere.
In this paper almost complex surfaces of the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$ are studied in a systematic way. We show that on such a surface it is possible to define a global holomorphic differential, which is induced by an almost product structure on the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$. We also find a correspondence between almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$ and solutions of the general $H$-system equation introduced by Wente, thus obtaining a geometric interpretation of solutions of the general $H$-system equation. From this we deduce a correspondence between constant m…
The space $\mathcal{Z}$ of leftinvariant orthogonal almost complex structures, keeping the orientation, on 6-dimensional Lie groups is researched. To get explicit view of this space elements the isomorphism of $\mathcal{Z}$ and $\mathbb{C}P^3$ is used. The explicit formula for arbitrary leftinvariant orthogonal almost complex structure on 6-dimensional Lie group as composition of rotations is found.
For the standard metric on the six-dimensional sphere, with Levi-Civita connection $\nabla$, we show there is no almost complex structure $J$ such that $\nabla_X J$ and $\nabla_{JX} J$ commute for every $X$, nor is there any integrable $J$ such that $\nabla_{JX} J = J \nabla_X J$ for every $X$. The latter statement generalizes a previously known result on the non-existence of integrable orthogonal almost complex structures on the six-sphere. Both statements have refined versions, expressed as intrinsic first order differential inequalities depending only on $J$ and the metric. The new techniqu…
In this paper, we present the invalidities of the results in [3], because of their definition of a semi-invariant submanifold of an almost complex contact metric manifold is not true .
There exist non-degenerate 3-form $dω_I$, $ω_I(X,Y)=g(IX,Y)$, for each leftinvariant almost Hermitian structure $(g,I)$, where $g$ is Killing-Cartan metric on the $M=S^3\times S^3=SU(2)\times SU(2)$. Known \cite{H1}, that arbitrary non-degenerate 3-form on the 6-dimensional manifold, with some additional properties defines the almost complex structure. Condition for $I$ to define almost complex structure $J_I$ by $dω_I$ is obtained. Properties of $J_I$ are researched.
An {\em almost p-Kähler manifold} is a triple $(M,J,Ω)$, where $(M,J)$ is an almost complex manifold of real dimension $2n$ and $Ω$ is a closed real tranverse $(p,p)$-form on $(M,J)$, where $1\leq p\leq n$. When $J$ is integrable, almost $p$-Kähler manifolds are called $p$-{\em Kähler manifolds}. We produce families of almost $p$-Kähler structures $(J_t,Ω_t)$ on $\C^3$, $\C^4$, and on the real torus $\mathbb{T}^6$, arising as deformations of Kähler structures $(J_0,g_0,ω_0)$, such that the almost complex structures $J_t$ cannot be locally compatible with any symplectic form for $t\neq 0$. Furt…
We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a smooth surface in a 4-manifold X to be pseudoholomorphic with respect to some almost complex structure on X. This provides a systematic approach to the construction of pseudoholomorphic curves that do not minimize the genus in their homology class.
This article is mostly a writeup of two talks, the first given in the Besse Seminar at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1998 and the second given at the 2000 International Congress on Differential Geometry in memory of Alfred Gray in Bilbao, Spain. It begins with a discussion of basic geometry of almost complex 6-manifolds. In particular, I define a 2-parameter family of intrinsic first-order functionals on almost complex structures on 6-manifolds and compute their Euler-Lagrange equations. It also includes a discussion of a natural generalization of holomorphic bundles over complex manifolds to the…
While small deformations of Kähler manifolds are Kähler too, we prove that the cohomological property to be $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-pure-and-full is not a stable condition under small deformations. This property, that has been recently introduced and studied by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and T. Drǎghici, T.-J. Li, and W. Zhang in [Symplectic forms and cohomology decomposition of almost complex four-manifolds, Int. Math. Res. Not.], [On the J-anti-invariant cohomology of almo…
We consider a pair of smooth manifolds, which are the counterparts in the even-dimensional and odd-dimensional cases. They are separately an almost complex manifold with Norden metric and an almost contact manifolds with B-metric, respectively. They can be combined as the so-called almost contact complex Riemannian manifold. This paper is a survey with additions of results on differential geometry of canonical-type connections (i.e. metric connections with torsion satisfying a certain algebraic identity) on the considered manifolds.
We construct a family of canonical connections and surrounding basic theory for almost complex manifolds that are equipped with an affine connection. This framework provides a uniform approach to treating a range of geometries. In particular we are able to construct an invariant and efficient calculus for conformal almost Hermitian geometries, and also for almost complex structures that are equipped with a projective structure. In the latter case we find a projectively invariant tensor the vanishing of which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an almost complex connection compatib…
We study almost complex surfaces in the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$. We show that there is a local correspondence between almost complex surfaces and solutions of the H-surface equation introduced by Wente. We find a global holomorphic differential on every almost complex surface, and show that when this differential vanishes, then the corresponding solution of the H-surface equation gives a constant mean curvature surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We use this, together with a theorem of Hopf, to classify all almost complex 2-spheres. In fact there is essentially only one, and it is totally geodes…
In the present work we consider an almost complex manifold with Norden metric (i.e. a metric with respect to which the almost complex structure is an antiisometry). On such a manifold we study a linear connection preserving the almost complex structure and the metric and having a totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor. We consider the case when the manifold admits a connection with parallel totally skew-symmetric torsion and the case when such connection has a Kaehler curvature tensor. We get necessary and sufficient conditions for an isotropic Kaehler manifold with Norden metric.
We consider an almost complex manifold with Norden metric (i. e. a metric with respect to which the almost complex structure is an anti-isometry). On such a manifold we study a linear connection preserving the almost complex structure and the metric and having a totally skew symmetric torsion tensor (i. e. a 3-form). We prove that if a non-Kaehler almost complex manifold with Norden metric admits such connection then the manifold is quasi-Kaehlerian (i. e. has non-integrable almost complex structure). We prove that this connection is unique, determine its form, and construct an example of it o…
We study the positive Hermitian curvature flow on the space of left-invariant metrics on complex Lie groups. We show that in the nilpotent case, the flow exists for all positive times and subconverges in the Cheeger-Gromov sense to a soliton. We also show convergence to a soliton when the complex Lie group is almost abelian. That is, when its Lie algebra admits a (complex) co-dimension one abelian ideal. Finally, we study solitons in the almost-abelian setting. We prove uniqueness and completely classify all left-invariant, almost-abelian solitons, giving a method to construct examples in arbi…
We study and classify almost complex totally geodesic submanifolds of the nearly Kaehler flag manifold $F_{1,2}(\mathbb C^3)$, and of its semi-Riemannian counterpart. We also develop a structural approach to the nearly Kaehler flag manifold $F_{1,2}(\mathbb C^3)$, expressing for example the curvature tensor in terms of the nearly Kaehler structure $J$ and the three canonical orthogonal complex structures.
There are five six-dimensional nilpotent Lie groups G, which do not admit neither symplectic, nor complex structures and, therefore, can be neither almost pseudo-Kahler, nor almost Hermitian. In this work, these Lie groups are being studied. The aim of the paper is to define new left-invariant geometric structures on the Lie groups under consideration that compensate, in some sense, the absence of symplectic and complex structures. New examples of multiparametric families of metrics of signature (3,3) and almost para-complex pseudo-Riemannian half-flat structures on six-dimensional nilmanifold…
We construct some families of complex structures on compact manifolds by means of normal almost contact structures (nacs) so that each complex manifold in the family has a non-singular holomorphic flow. These families include as particular cases the Hopf and Calabi-Eckmann manifolds and the complex structures on the product of two normal almost contact manifolds constructed by Morimoto. We prove that every compact Kaehler manifold admitting a non-vanishing holomorphic vector field belongs to one of these families and is a complexificacion of a normal almost contact manifold. Finally we show th…
We classify invariant almost complex structures on homogeneous manifolds of dimension 6 with semi-simple isotropy. Those with non-degenerate Nijenhuis tensor have the automorphism group of dimension either 14 or 9. An invariant almost complex structure with semi-simple isotropy is necessarily either of specified 6 homogeneous types or a left-invariant structure on a Lie group. For integrable invariant almost complex structures we classify all compatible invariant Hermitian structures on these homogeneous manifolds, indicate their integrability properties (Kahler, SNK, SKT) and mark the other i…
In this paper we study submanifolds of an almost complex manifold with Norden metric which are non-degenerate with respect to the one Norden metric and lightlike with respect to the other Norden metric on the manifold. Relations between the induced geometric objects of some of these submanifolds are given. Examples of the considered submanifolds are constructed.
Non-split almost complex supermanifolds and non-split Riemannian supermanifolds are studied. The first obstacle for a splitting is parametrized by group orbits on an infinite dimensional vector space. Further it is shown that non-split structures appear in the first case as deformations of a split reduction and in the second case as the deformation of an underlying metric. In contrast to non-split deformations of complex supermanifolds, these deformations can be restricted by cut-off functions to local deformations. A class of examples of nowhere split structures constructed from almost comple…
Let J be a unitary almost complex structure on a Riemannian manifold (M,g). If x is a unit tangent vector, let P be the associated complex line spanned by x and by Jx. We show that if (M,g) is Hermitian or if (M,g) is nearly Kaehler, then either the complex Jacobi operator (JC(P)y=R(y,x)x+R(y,Jx)Jx) or the complex curvature operator (RC(P)y=R(x,Jx)y) completely determine the full curvature operator; this generalizes a well known result in the real setting to the complex setting. We also show this result fails for general almost Hermitian manifold.
In this article we apply a Bochner type formula to show that on a compact conformally flat riemannian manifold (or half-conformally flat in dimension 4) certain types of orthogonal almost-complex structures, if they exist, give the absolute minimum for the energy functional. We give a few examples when such minimizers exist, and in particular, we prove that the standard almost-complex structure on the round S^6 gives the absolute minimum for the energy. We also discuss the uniqueness of this minimum and the extension of these results to other orthogonal G-structures.
In this paper we describe the oriented Riemannian four-manifolds $M$ for which the Atiyah-Hitchin-Singer or Eells-Salamon almost complex structure on the twistor space ${\mathcal Z}$ of $M$ determines a harmonic map from ${\mathcal Z}$ into its twistor space.
We show that any compact almost-complex manifold of complex dimension m can be pseudo-holomorphically embedded in R^(6m) equipped with a suitable almost-complex structure.
