We study the space of closed anti-invariant forms on an almost complex manifold, possibly non compact. We construct families of (non integrable) almost complex structures on $\R^4$, such that the space of closed $J$-anti-invariant forms is infinite dimensional, and also $0$- or $1$-dimensional. In the compact case, we construct $6$-dimensional almost complex manifolds with arbitrary large anti-invariant cohomology and a $2$-parameter family of almost complex structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold whose anti-invariant cohomology group has maximum dimension.
We define a transverse Dolbeault cohomology associated to any almost complex structure $j$ on a smooth manifold $M$. This we do by extending the notion of transverse complex structure and by introducing a natural j-stable involutive limit distribution with such a transverse complex structure. We relate this transverse Dolbeault cohomology to the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of (M,j) introduced by Cirici and Wilson, showing that the (p,0) cohomology spaces coincide. This study of transversality leads us to suggest a notion of minimally non-integrable almost complex structure.
Let $M^n$ be a closed manifold of almost nonnegative sectional curvature and nonzero first de Rham cohomology group. For any $[θ] \in H^1_{dR}(M^n), [θ] \neq 0$, we show that the Morse- Novikov cohomology group $H^p(M^n, θ)$ vanishes for any $p$. A similar result holds for a closed manifold of almost nonnegative Ricci curvature under the additional assumption that its curvature operator is uniformly bounded from below.
We give numerous examples of almost Lie algebroids arising as Dirac structures in pre-Courant algebroids, e.g. from twisted Poisson structures, as well as from twisted actions of a Lie algebra. We moreover define a cohomology for them, motivated by a Q-structure, that is trivial for (bundles of) Lie algebras but characterizes the underlying integrable distribution the image of the anchor map.
We construct lattices on six dimensional not completely solvable almost abelian Lie groups, for which the Mostow condition does not hold. For the corresponding compact quotients, we compute the de Rham cohomology (which does not agree in general with the Lie algebra one) and a minimal model. We show that some of these solvmanifolds admit not invariant symplectic structures and we study formality and Lefschetz properties.
Following T.-J. Li, W. Zhang [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.], we continue to study the link between the cohomology of an almost-complex manifold and its almost-complex structure. In particular, we apply the same argument in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and the results obtained by D. Sullivan in [Cycles for the dynamical study of foliated manifolds and complex manifolds, Invent. Math.] t…
Let $(X,J,ω,g)$ be a complete $n$-dimensional Kähler manifold. A Theorem by Gromov \cite{G} states that the if the Kähler form is $d$-bounded, then the space of harmonic $L_2$ forms of degree $k$ is trivial, unless $k=\frac{n}{2}$. Starting with a contact manifold $(M,α)$ we show that the same conclusion does not hold in the category of almost Kähler manifolds. Let $(X,J,g)$ be a complete almost Hermitian manifold of dimension four. We prove that the reduced $L_2$ $2^{nd}$-cohomology group decomposes as direct sum of the closure of the invariant and anti-invariant $L_2$-cohomology. This genera…
In order to look for a well-behaved counterpart to Dolbeault cohomology in D-complex geometry, we study the de Rham cohomology of an almost D-complex manifold and its subgroups made up of the classes admitting invariant, respectively anti-invariant, representatives with respect to the almost D-complex structure, miming the theory introduced by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [T.-J. Li, W. Zhang, Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom. 17 (2009), no. 4, 651-684] for almost complex manifolds. In particular, we prove tha…
While small deformations of Kähler manifolds are Kähler too, we prove that the cohomological property to be $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-pure-and-full is not a stable condition under small deformations. This property, that has been recently introduced and studied by T.-J. Li and W. Zhang in [Comparing tamed and compatible symplectic cones and cohomological properties of almost complex manifolds, Comm. Anal. Geom.] and T. Drǎghici, T.-J. Li, and W. Zhang in [Symplectic forms and cohomology decomposition of almost complex four-manifolds, Int. Math. Res. Not.], [On the J-anti-invariant cohomology of almo…
In this paper we relate the cohomology of $J$-invariant forms to the Dolbeault cohomology of an almost complex manifold. We find necessary and sufficient condition for the inclusion of the former into the latter to be true up to isomorphism. We also extend some results obtained by J. Cirici and S.O. Wilson about the computation of the left-invariant cohomology of nilmanifolds to the setting of solvmanifolds. Several examples are given.
In this paper, motivated by Chen--Ruan's stringy orbifold theory on almost complex orbifolds, we construct a new cohomology ring $\mathscr H^\ast_{G,cs}(X)$ for an equivariant almost complex pair $(X,G)$, where $X$ is a compact connected almost complex manifold, $G$ is a connected compact Lie group which acts on $X$ and preserves the almost complex structure.
This paper extends Dolbeault cohomology and its surrounding theory to arbitrary almost complex manifolds. We define a spectral sequence converging to ordinary cohomology, whose first page is the Dolbeault cohomology, and develop a harmonic theory which injects into Dolbeault cohomology. Lie-theoretic analogues of the theory are developed which yield important calculational tools for Lie groups and nilmanifolds. Finally, we study applications to maximally non-integrable manifolds, including nearly Kähler $6$-manifolds, and show Dolbeault cohomology can be used to prohibit the existence of nearl…
Let $(X,J)$ be an almost-complex manifold. In \cite{li-zhang} Li and Zhang introduce $H^{(p,q),(q,p)}_J(X)_{\rr}$ as the cohomology subgroups of the $(p+q)$-th de Rham cohomology group formed by classes represented by real pure-type forms. Given a proper, surjective, pseudo-holomorphic map between two almost-complex manifolds we study the relationship among such cohomology groups. Similar results are proven in the symplectic setting for the cohomology groups introduced in \cite{tsengyauI} by Tseng and Yau and a new characterization of the Hard Lefschetz condition in dimension $4$ is provided.
We study a cohomology theory $H^{\bullet}_φ$, called the $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology, on compact torsion-free $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds. We show that $H^k_φ \cong H^k_{\mathrm{dR}}$ for $k \neq 3, 4$, but that $H^k_φ$ is infinite-dimensional for $k = 3,4$. Nevertheless there is a canonical injection $H^k_{\mathrm{dR}} \to H^k_φ$. The $\mathcal L_B$-cohomology also satisfies a Poincaré duality induced by the Hodge star. The establishment of these results requires a delicate analysis of the interplay between the exterior derivative $\mathrm{d}$ and the derivation $\mathcal L_B$, and uses both Hodge…
For a compact almost complex 4-manifold $(M,J)$, we study the subgroups $H^{\pm}_J$ of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ consisting of cohomology classes representable by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant 2-forms. If $b^+ =1$, we show that for generic almost complex structures on $M$, the subgroup $H^-_J$ is trivial. Computations of the subgroups and their dimensions $h^{\pm}_J$ are obtained for almost complex structures related to integrable ones. We also prove semi-continuity properties for $h^{\pm}_J$.
Based on recent work of T. Draghici, T.-J. Li and W. Zhang, we further investigate properties of the dimension h_J of the J-anti-invariant cohomology subgroup H_J of a closed almost Hermitian 4-manifold (M, g, J, F) using metric compatible and symplectic 2-form compatible almost complex structures. We prove that h_J = 0 for generic almost complex structures J on M.
For any compact almost complex manifold $(M,J)$, the last two authors defined two subgroups $H_J^+(M)$, $H_J^-(M)$ of the degree 2 real de Rham cohomology group $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ in arXiv:0708.2520. These are the sets of cohomology classes which can be represented by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant real $2-$forms. In this note, it is shown that in dimension 4 these subgroups induce a cohomology decomposition of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$. This is a specifically 4-dimensional result, as it follows from a recent work of Fino and Tomassini. Some estimates for the dimensions of these …
In this paper, we consider decompositions of basic degree 2 cohomology for a compact K-contact 5-manifold $(M,ξ,η,Φ,g)$, and conclude the pureness and fullness of $Φ$-invariant and $Φ$-anti-invariant cohomology groups. Moreover, we discuss the decomposition of the complexified basic degree 2 cohomology group. This is an analogue problem when Draghici, Li and Zhang \cite{DLZ1} considered the $C^{\infty}$ pureness and fullness of $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant subgroups of the degree 2 real cohomology group $H^2(M,\mathbb{R})$ of any compact almost complex manifold $(M, J)$.
We study cohomologies on an almost complex manifold $(M, J)$, defined using the Nijenhuis-Lie derivations $\mathcal{L}_J$ and $\mathcal{L}_N$ induced from the almost complex structure $J$ and its Nijenhuis tensor $N$, regarded as vector-valued forms on $M$. We show how one of these, the $N$-cohomology $H^{\bullet}_N (M)$, can be used to distinguish non-isomorphic non-integrable almost complex structures on $M$. Another one, the $J$-cohomology $H^{\bullet}_J (M)$, is familiar in the integrable case but we extend its definition and applicability to the case of non-integrable almost complex struc…
If $X$ is a smooth manifold and ${\mathcal{G}}$ is a subgroup of $Diff(X)$ we say that $(X,{\mathcal{G}})$ has the almost fixed point property if there exists a number $C$ such that for any finite subgroup $G\leq{\mathcal{G}}$ there is some $x\in X$ whose stabilizer $G_x\leq G$ satisfies $[G:G_x]\leq C$. We say that $X$ has no odd cohomology if its integral cohomology is torsion free and supported in even degrees. We prove that if $X$ is compact and possibly with boundary and has no odd cohomology then $(X,Diff(X))$ has the almost fixed point property. Combining this with a result of Petrie an…
We discuss the decomposition of degree two basic cohomology for codimension four taut Riemannian foliation according to the holonomy invariant transversal almost complex structure J, and show that J is C pure and full. In addition, we obtain an estimate of the dimension of basic J-anti-invariant subgroup. These are the foliated version for the corresponding results of T. Draghici et al.
We suggest an explanation for the part of the Satake Correspondence which relates the quantum cohomology of complex Grassmannians and the quantum cohomology of complex projective space, as well as their respective Stokes data, based on the original physics approach using the tt* equations. We also use the Stokes data of the tt* equations to provide a Lie-theoretic link between particles in affine Toda models and solitons in certain sigma-models. Along the way, we illustrate some (well known) relations between the tt* equations, the non-abelian Hodge Correspondence, and quantum cohomology.
We give the extension formulae on almost complex manifolds and give decompositions of the extension formulae. As applications, we study $(n,0)$-forms, the $(n,0)$-Dolbeault cohomology group and $(n,q)$-forms on almost complex manifolds.
We study the J-invariant and J-anti-invariant cohomological subgroups of the de Rham cohomology of a compact manifold M endowed with an almost-Kähler structure (J, ω, g). In particular, almost-Kähler manifolds satisfying a Lefschetz type property, and solvmanifolds endowed with left-invariant almost-complex structures are investigated.
Let $M$ be a compact, connected symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a compact $n$-dimensional torus $G=T^n$. Suppose that $σ$ is an anti-symplectic involution compatible with the $G$-action. The real locus of $M$ is $X$, the fixed point set of $σ$. Duistermaat uses Morse theory to give a description of the ordinary cohomology of $X$ in terms of the cohomology of $M$. There is a residual $\G=(\Zt)^n$ action on $X$, and we can use Duistermaat's result, as well as some general facts about equivariant cohomology, to prove an equivariant analogue to Duistermaat's theorem. In some cases…
We investigate new Clairaut conditions for anti-invariant submersions from normal almost contact metric manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We prove that there is no Clairaut anti-invariant submersion admitting vertical Reeb vector field when the total manifold is Sasakian. Several illustrative examples are also included.
We show that the unit tangent bundle of S^4 and a real cohomology CP^3 admit Riemannian metrics with positive sectional curvature almost everywhere. These are the only examples so far with positive curvature almost everywhere that are not also known to admit positive curvature.
We give new counterexamples to a question of Karsten Grove, whether there are only finitely many rational homotopy types among simply connected manifolds satisfying the assumptions of Gromov's Betti number theorem. Our counterexamples are homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, in contrast to previous ones. They consist of two families in dimensions 13 and 22. Both families are nonnegatively curved with an additional upper curvature bound and differ already by the ring structure of their cohomology rings with complex coefficients. The 22-dimensional examples also admit almost nonnegative curvature o…
It is proved that if an almost Kähler manifold of dimension greater or equal to 8 is of pointwise constant antiholomorphic sectional curvature, then it is a complex space form.
We show the existence of strictly almost-Kahler anti-self-dual metrics on certain 4-manifolds by deforming scalar-flat Kahler metrics. On the other hand, we prove the non-existence of such metrics on certain other 4-manifolds by means of Seiberg-Witten theory. In the process, we provide a simple new proof of the fact that any almost-Kahler anti-self-dual 4-manifold must have a non-trivial Seiberg-Witten invariant.
We prove the existence of invariant almost complex structure on any positively omnioriented quasitoric orbifold. We construct blowdowns. We define Chen-Ruan cohomology ring for any omnioriented quasitoric orbifold. We prove that the Euler characteristic of this cohomology is preserved by a crepant blowdown. We prove that the Betti numbers are also preserved if dimension is less or equal to six. In particular, our work reveals a new form of McKay correspondence for orbifold toric varieties that are not Gorenstein. We illustrate with an example.

A linear constraint is given on the Betti numbers of a compact hyper-Kaehler manifold, using an index formula for c_1c_{n-1} on an almost complex manifold. The topology of some other manifolds with reduced holonomy is also discussed briefly.
Let $M^n$ be a compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature and nonzero first Betti number. We show that the holomorphic Euler number of $M^n$ vanishes, which gives a new obstruction for compact complex manifolds admitting K$\ddot{a}$hler metrics with almost nonnegative Ricci curvature. A crucial step in the proof is to show a vanishing theorem of Dolbeault-Morse-Novikov cohomology.
It is proved that if an AK2-manifold of dimension greater or equal to 6 is of pointwise constant antiholomorphic sectional curvature, then it is a 6-dimensional manifold of constant negative sectional curvature or a Kähler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvature.
As a generalization of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions and Lagrangian Riemannian submersions, we introduce the notions of h-anti-invariant submersions and h-Lagrangian submersions from almost quaternionic Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We obtain characterizations and investigate some properties: the integrability of distributions, the geometry of foliations, and the harmonicity of such maps. We also find a condition for such maps to be totally geodesic and give some examples of such maps. Finally, we obtain some types of decomposition theorems.
As a generalization of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions, we introduce anti-invariant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds. We give examples and investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of an anti-Riemannian map. Then we give a decomposition theorem for the source manifold of such maps. We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for anti-invariant Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic and show that every pluriharmonic Lagrangian Riemannian map, which is a special anti-invariant Riemannian map, from a Kähler manifo…
This paper proves that on any tamed closed almost complex four-manifold $(M,J)$ whose dimension of $J$-anti-invariant cohomology is equal to the self-dual second Betti number minus one, there exists a new symplectic form compatible with the given almost complex structure $J$. In particular, if the self-dual second Betti number is one, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Donaldson for tamed closed almost complex four-manifolds. Our approach is along the lines used by Buchdahl to give a unified proof of the Kodaira conjecture.
Let $(M,ω,J,g)$ be a non-compact almost Kähler manifold. In this paper we provide various criteria that assure that $ω^k$ induces a non trivial class in the reduced $L^p$ maximal/minimal cohomology of $(M,g)$. Furthermore in the last part we explore some topological applications of our results.
We introduce conformal anti-invariant submersions from almost Hermitian manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of foliations which are arisen from the definition of a conformal submersion and find necessary and sufficient conditions for a conformal anti-invariant submersion to be totally geodesic. We also check the harmonicity of such submersions and show that the total space has certain product structures. Moreover, we obtain curvature relations between the base space and the total space, and find geometric implications of these relations.
A hypercomplex structure $(I,J,K)$ on a manifold $M$ is said to be $C^\infty$-pure-and-full if the Dolbeault cohomology $H^{2,0}_{\partial}(M,I)$ is the direct sum of two natural subgroups called the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups. We prove that a compact hypercomplex manifold that satisfies the quaternionic version of the $dd^c$-Lemma is $C^\infty$-pure-and-full. Moreover, we study the dimensions of the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups, together with their analogue in the Bott-Chern cohomology. For instance, in real dimension 8, we…
Motivated by orbifold string theory, we introduce orbifold cohomology group for any almost complex orbifold and orbifold Dolbeault cohomology for any complex orbifold. Then, we show that our new cohomology group satisfies Poincare duality and has a natural ring structure. Some examples of orbifold cohomology ring are computed.
Atiyah's classical work on circular symmetry and stationary phase shows how the $\hat{A}$-genus is obtained by formally applying the equivariant cohomology localization formula to the loop space of a simply connected spin manifold. The same technique, applied to a suitable ''antiholomorphic sector'' in the $\mathbb{C}/Λ$-equivariant cohomology of the conformal double loop space $\mathrm{Maps}(\mathbb{C}/Λ,X)$ of a rationally string manifold $X$ produces the Witten genus of $X$. This can be seen as an equivariant localization counterpart to Berwick-Evans supersymmetric localization derivation o…
We study the cohomology with high tensor powers of Nakano $q$-semipositive line bundles on complex manifolds. We obtain the asymptotic estimates for the dimension of cohomology with high tensor powers of semipositive line bundles over q-convex manifolds and various possibly non-compact complex manifolds, in which the order of estimates are optimal. Besides, estimates for the modified Dirac operator on Nakano $q$-positive line bundle on almost complex manifolds are given.
Donaldson-Friedman constructed anti-self-dual classes on $K3\#3\overline{\mathbb{CP}_{2}}$ using twistor space. We show that some of these conformal classes have almost-Kähler representatives.
After defining cohomologically higher order BRST and anti-BRST operators for a compact simple algebra {\cal G}, the associated higher order Laplacians are introduced and the corresponding supersymmetry algebra $Σ$ is analysed. These operators act on the states generated by a set of fermionic ghost fields transforming under the adjoint representation. In contrast with the standard case, for which the Laplacian is given by the quadratic Casimir, the higher order Laplacians $W$ are not in general given completely in terms of the Casimir-Racah operators, and may involve the ghost number operator. …
Reformulations of Donaldson's "tamed to compatible" question are obtained in terms of spaces of exact forms on a compact almost complex manifold $(M^{2n},J)$. In dimension 4, we show that $J$ admits a compatible symplectic form if and only if $J$ admits tamed symplectic forms with arbitrarily given $J$-anti-invariant parts. Some observations about the cohomology of $J$-modified de Rham complexes are also made.
We relate the quantum cohomology of minuscule flag manifolds to the tt*-Toda equations, a special case of the topological-antitopological fusion equations which were introduced by Cecotti and Vafa in their study of supersymmetric quantum field theories. To do this, we combine the Lie-theoretic treatment of the tt*-Toda equations of Guest-Ho with the Lie-theoretic description of the quantum cohomology of minuscule flag manifolds from Chaput-Manivel-Perrin and Golyshev-Manivel.
We introduce certain homology and cohomology subgroups for any almost complex structure and study their pureness, fullness and duality properties. Motivated by a question of Donaldson, we use these groups to relate J-tamed symplectic cones and J-compatible symplectic cones over a large class of almost complex manifolds, including all Kahler manifolds, almost Kahler 4-manifolds and complex surfaces.
Quasitoric spaces were introduced by Davis and Januskiewicz in their 1991 Duke paper. There they extensively studied topological invariants of quasitoric manifolds. These manifolds are generalizations or topological counterparts of nonsingular projective toric varieties. In this article we study structures and invariants of quasitoric orbifolds. In particular, we discuss equivalent definitions and determine the orbifold fundamental group, rational homology groups and cohomology ring of a quasitoric orbifold. We determine whether any quasitoric orbifold can be the quotient of a smooth manifold …
It is known that the almost-Kaehler anti-self-dual metrics on a given 4-manifold sweep out an open subset in the moduli space of anti-self-dual metrics. However, we show here by example that this subset is not generally closed, and so need not sweep out entire connected components in the moduli space. Our construction hinges on an unexpected link between harmonic functions on certain hyperbolic 3-manifolds and self-dual harmonic 2-forms on associated 4-manifolds.
We establish a new criterion for a compatible almost complex structure on a symplectic four-manifold to be integrable and hence Kähler. Our main theorem shows that the existence of three linearly independent closed J-anti-invariant two-forms implies the integrability of the almost complex structure. This proves the conjecture of Draghici-Li-Zhang in the almost-Kähler case
Let $M$ be a $10$-dimensional closed oriented smooth manifold. Set $$\mathcal{D}_{M} := \{ x \in H^{2}(M; \Z/2) \mid x^{2} + w_{2}(M) x \in ρ_{2} ( TH^{4}(M;\Z) ) \}.$$ Suppose that $H_{1}(M;\Z)=0$ and $\mathcal{D}_{M} \subset ρ_{2}( H^{2}(M; \Z) )$. Then the necessary and sufficient conditions for $M$ to admit a stable almost complex structure are determined in terms of the characteristic classes and cohomology ring of $M$.
