A Pre-Lie algebra is a vector space L endowed with a bilinear product * : L \times L to L satisfying the relation (x*y)*z-x*(y*z)= (x*z)*y-x*(z*y), for all x,y,z in L. We give an explicit combinatorial description in terms of rooted trees of the operad associated to this type of algebras and prove that it is a Koszul operad.
We will define an operad $\mathcal{B}^0$ on planar rooted trees. $\mathcal{B}^0$ is analgous to the $NAP$-operad in the non-planar tree setting. We will define a family of "current-preserving" operads $\mathcal{B}^λ$ depending on a scalar parameter $λ$, which can be seen as a deformation of the operad $\mathcal{B}^0$. Forgetting the extra "current preserving" notion above give back the Brace operad for $λ=1$ and the $\mathcal{B}^0$ operad for $λ=0$. A natural map from non-planar rooted trees to plane ones gives back the current-preserving interpolation between $NAP$ and pre-Lie investigated in…
This paper deals with a group of generalized power series associated to any augmented operad, focusing on the case of the PreLie operad. The solution of flow equations using the pre-Lie structure on vector fields on an affine space gives rise to an interesting element of this group, which deserves to be called the PreLie exponential.
The present article takes advantage of the properties of algebras in the category of S-modules (twisted algebras) to investigate further the fine algebraic structure of Hopf operads. We prove that any Hopf operad P carries naturally the structure of twisted Hopf P-algebra. Many properties of classical Hopf algebraic structures are then shown to be encapsulated in the twisted Hopf algebraic structure of the corresponding Hopf operad. In particular, various classical theorems of Lie theory relating Lie polynomials to words (i.e. elements of the tensor algebra) are lifted to arbitrary Hopf operad…
The aim of this paper is to further explore an idea from J.-L. Loday briefly exposed in [5]. We impose a natural and simple symmetry on a unit action over the most general quadratic relation which can be written. This leads us to two families of binary, quadratic and regular operads whose free objects, as well as their duals in the sense of Ginzburg and Kapranov are computed. Roughly speaking, free objects found here are in relation to $m$-ary trees, triangular numbers and more generally $m$-tetrahedral numbers, homogeneous polynomials on $m$ commutative indeterminates over a field $K$ and pol…
Several generating series for flows on rooted trees are introduced, as elements in the group of series associated with the Pre-Lie operad. By combinatorial arguments, one proves identities that characterise these series. One then gives a complete description of the image of these series in the group of series associated with the Dendriform operad. This allows to recover the Lie idempotents in the descent algebras recently introduced by Menous, Novelli and Thibon. Moreover, one defines new Lie idempotents and conjecture the existence of some others.

An operad describes a category of algebras and a (co)homology theory for these algebras may be formulated using the homological algebra of operads. A morphism of operads $f:\mathcal{O}\rightarrow\mathcal{P}$ describes a functor allowing a $\mathcal{P}$-algebra to be viewed as an $\mathcal{O}$-algebra. We show that the $\mathcal{O}$-algebra (co)homology of a $\mathcal{P}$-algebra may be represented by a certain operadic comodule. Thus filtrations of this comodule result in spectral sequences computing the (co)homology. As a demonstration we study operads with a filtered distributive law; for th…
We define a family of multigraded operads $O_λ$ depending on a scalar parameter, such that forgetting the multigraduation gives back the pre-Lie operad when the parameter $λ$ is equal to one, and the NAP operad governing Non-Associative Permutative algebras when $λ$ is equal to zero.
Using methods of computer algebra, especially Gröbner bases for submodules of free modules over polynomial rings, we solve a classification problem in theory of algebraic operads: we show that the only nontrivial (possibly inhomogeneous) distributive law between the operad of Lie algebras and the operad of commutative associative algebras is given by the Livernet-Loday formula deforming the Poisson operad into the associative operad.
We show that the operad Lie is free as a non-symmetric operad. Then we study the generating series counting the operadic generators, finding a recursive formula for its coefficients, and showing that the asymptotic density of the operadic generators is 1/e.
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operads obtained from usual monoids such as the additive and multiplicative monoids of integers and cyclic monoids. They involve various familiar combinatorial objects: endofunctions, parking functions, packed words, permutations, planar rooted trees, trees with a fixed arity, Schröder trees, Motzkin words, integer compositions, directed animals, and segmented integer compositions. We also recover some already known (symmetric or not) op…
Action of the graded Grothendieck-Teichmueller (GT) group on a resolution of the operad of Gerstenhaber algebras (GA) is defined. It is shown that the induced Lie algebra action is homotopically non-trivial (i.e. the induced map from the Lie algebra of the graded GT group to the deformation complex of the operad of GA is injective).
This article aims at a detailed analysis of the PreLie operad. We obtain a more concrete description of the relationship between the anticyclic structure of PreLie and the generators of PreLie as a Lie-module, which was known before only at the level of characters. Building on this, we obtain an inclusion of the cyclic Lie module in the PreLie operad. We conjecture that the image of this inclusion generates an interesting free sub-operad.
We prove that the algebra $\cal{A}$ of chord diagrams, the dual to the associated graded algebra of Vassiliev knot invariants, is isomorphic to the universal enveloping algebra of a Casimir Lie algebra in a certain tensor category (the PROP for Casimir Lie algebras). This puts on a firm ground a known statement that the algebra $\cal{A}$ ``looks and behaves like a universal enveloping algebra''. An immediate corollary of our result is the conjecture of Bar-Natan, Garoufalidis, Rozansky, and Thurston on the Kirillov-Duflo isomorphism for algebras of chord diagrams. Our main tool is a general co…
A theorem of Kontsevich relates the homology of certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras to graph homology. We formulate this theorem using the language of reversible operads and mated species. All ideas are explained using a pictorial calculus of cuttings and matings. The Lie algebras are constructed as Hamiltonian functions on a symplectic operad manifold. And graph complexes are defined for any mated species. The general formulation gives us many examples including a graph homology for groups. We also speculate on the role of deformation theory for operads in this setting.
We prove that free pre-Lie algebras, when considered as Lie algebras, are free. Working in the category of S-modules, we define a natural filtration on the space of generators. We also relate the symmetric group action on generators with the structure of the anticyclic PreLie operad.
We define a generalization of Massey products for algebras over a Koszul operad in characteristic zero, extending Massey's and Allday's and Retah's in the associative and Lie cases, respectively. We establish connections with minimal models and with Dimitrova's universal operadic cohomology class. We compute a Gerstenhaber algebra example and a hypercommutative algebra example related to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of the Heisenberg Lie algebra.
We define the $m$th Veronese power of a weight graded operad $\mathcal{P}$ to be its suboperad $\mathcal{P}^{[m]}$ generated by operations of weight $m$. It turns out that, unlike Veronese powers of associative algebras, homological properties of operads are, in general, not improved by this construction. However, under some technical conditions, Veronese powers of quadratic Koszul operads are meaningful in the context of the Koszul duality theory. Indeed, we show that in many important cases the operads $\mathcal{P}^{[m]}$ are related by Koszul duality to operads describing strongly homotopy …
This paper gives a systematic study of matching dialgebras corresponding to the operad $As^{(2)}$ in \cite{Zi} as the only Koszul self dual operad there other than the operads of associative algebras and Poisson algebras. The close relationship of matching dialgebras with semi-homomorphisms and matched pairs of associative algebras are established. By anti-symmetrizing, matching dialgerbas are also shown to give compatible Lie algebras, pre-Lie algebras and PostLie algebras. By the rewriting method, the operad of matching dialgebras is shown to be Koszul and the free objects are constructed in…
This paper establishes a uniform procedure to split the operations in any algebraic operad, generalizing previous known notions of splitting algebraic structures from the dendriform algebra of Loday that splits the associative operation to the successors that split any binary operad. Examples are provided for various $n$-associative algebras, $n$-Lie algebras, $A_\infty$ algebras and $L_\infty$ algebras. Further, the concept of a Rota-Baxter operator, first showing its importance in the associative and Lie algebra context and then generalized to any binary operads, is generalized to arbitrary …
We define and study a series indexed by rooted trees and with coefficients in Q(q). We show that it is related to a family of Lie idempotents. We prove that this series is a q-deformation of a more classical series and that some of its coefficients are Carlitz q-Bernoulli numbers.
It is shown that for any morphism, i: g --> h, of Lie algebras the vector space underlying the Lie algebra h is canonically a g-homogeneous formal manifold with the action of g being highly nonlinear and twisted by Bernoulli numbers. This fact is obtained from the study of a 2-coloured operad of formal homogeneous spaces and its minimal resolution, and is used to give a new conceptual explanation of both Ziv Ran's Jacobi-Bernoulli complex and Fiorenza-Manetti's L-infinity algebra structure on the mapping cone of a morphism of two Lie algebras. All these constructions are iteratively extended t…
We study the pre-Lie algebra of rooted trees $(\Cal T, \rightarrow)$ and we define a pre-Lie structure on its doubling space $(V, \leadsto)$. Also, we find the enveloping algebras of the two pre-Lie algebras denoted respectively by $(\Cal H', \star, Γ)$ and $(\Cal D', \bigstar, χ)$. We prove that $(\Cal D', \bigstar, χ)$ is a module-bialgebra on $(\Cal H', \star, Γ)$ and we find some relations between the two pre-Lie structures.
We give a universal construction of families of Hopf $P$-algebras for any Hopf operad $P$. As a special case, we recover the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees.
We study pre-Lie pairs, by which we mean a pair of a homotopy Lie algebra and a pre-Lie algebra with a compatible pre-Lie action. Such pairs provide a wealth of algebraic structure, which in particular can be used to analyze the homotopy Lie part of the pair. Our main application and the main motivation for this development are the dg Lie algebras of hairy graphs computing the rational homotopy groups of the mapping spaces of the $E_n$ operads. We show that twisting with certain Maurer-Cartan elements trivializes their Lie algebra structure. The result can be used to understand the rational ho…
We relate the operad FMan controlling the algebraic structure on the tangent sheaf of an $F$-manifold (weak Frobenius manifold) defined by Hertling and Manin to the operad PreLie of pre-Lie algebras: for the filtration of PreLie by powers of the ideal generated by the Lie bracket, the associated graded object is FMan.
The Deligne-Getzler-Hinich--$\infty$-groupoid or Maurer-Cartan simplicial set of an $L_\infty$-algebra plays an important role in deformation theory and many other areas of mathematics. Unfortunately, this construction only works over a field of characteristic $0$. The goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Maurer-Cartan equation and Maurer-Cartan simplicial set can be defined for a much larger number of operads than just the $L_\infty$-operad. More precisely, we show that the Koszul dual of every unital Hopf cooperad (a cooperad in the category of unital associative algebras) with …
Functors from (co)operads to bialgebras relate Hopf algebras that occur in renormalisation to operads, which simplifies the proof of the Hopf algebra axioms, and induces a characterisation of the corresponding group of characters and Lie algebra of primitives of the dual in terms of the operad. In addition, it is shown that the Wick rotation formula leads to canonical algebras for one of these operads.
A syntax tree is a planar rooted tree where internal nodes are labeled on a graded set of generators. There is a natural notion of occurrence of contiguous pattern in such trees. We describe a way, given a set of generators $\mathfrak{G}$ and a set of patterns $\mathcal{P}$, to enumerate the trees constructed on $\mathfrak{G}$ and avoiding $\mathcal{P}$. The method is built around inclusion-exclusion formulas forming a system of equations on formal power series of trees, and composition operations of trees. This does not require particular conditions on the set of patterns to avoid. We connect…
In previous works by the authors, a bifunctor was associated to any operadic twisting morphism, taking a coalgebra over a cooperad and an algebra over an operad, and giving back the space of (graded) linear maps between them endowed with a homotopy Lie algebra structure. We build on this result by using a more general notion of $\infty$-morphism between (co)algebras over a (co)operad associated to a twisting morphism, and show that this bifunctor can be extended to take such $\infty$-morphisms in either one of its two slots. We also provide a counterexample proving that it cannot be coherently…
We study a pair of dual operads which arise in the study of moduli spaces of pointed genus 0 curves (this duality is similar to that between commutative and Lie algebras). These operads are both quadratic, and even Koszul, and arise in the theory of quantum cohomology.
We show that the zeroth cohomology of M. Kontsevich's graph complex is isomorphic to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra grt_1. The map is explicitly described. This result has applications to deformation quantization and Duflo theory. We also compute the homotopy derivations of the Gerstenhaber operad. They are parameterized by grt_1, up to one class (or two, depending on the definitions). More generally, the homotopy derivations of the (non-unital) E_n operads may be expressed through the cohomology of a suitable graph complex. Our methods also give a second proof of a result of H. Fur…
The works of Poincare, Birkhoff, Witt and Cartier, Milnor, Moore on the connected cocommutative Hopf algebras translated in the language of operads means that the triple of operads (Com, As, Lie) endowed with the Hopf compatiblity relation is good. In this paper, we focus on left dipterous (resp. right dipterous) algebras which are associative algebras with an extra left (resp. right) module on themselves and look for good triples were $As$ is replaced by the dipterous operad Dipt. Since the work of Loday and Ronco, the triple of operads (As, Dipt, B_\infty) endowed with the semi-Hopf compatib…
We establish a new and surprisingly strong link between two previously unrelated theories: the theory of moduli spaces of curves ${\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ (which, according to Penner, is controlled by the ribbon graph complex) and the homotopy theory of $E_d$ operads (controlled by ordinary graph complexes with no ribbon structure, introduced first by Kontsevich). The link between the two goes through a new intermediate {\em stable}\, ribbon graph complex which has roots in the deformation theory of quantum $A_\infty$ algebras and the theory of Kontsevich compactifications of moduli spaces of curve…
In two seminal papers M. Kontsevich introduced graph homology as a tool to compute the homology of three infinite dimensional Lie algebras, associated to the three operads `commutative,' `associative' and `Lie.' We generalize his theorem to all cyclic operads, in the process giving a more careful treatment of the construction than in Kontsevich's original papers. We also give a more explicit treatment of the isomorphisms of graph homologies with the homology of moduli space and Out(F_r) outlined by Kontsevich. In [`Infinitesimal operations on chain complexes of graphs', Mathematische Annalen, …
This paper provides a conceptual study of the twisting procedure, which amounts to create functorially new differential graded Lie algebras, associative algebras or operads (as well as their homotopy versions) from a Maurer--Cartan element. On the way, we settle the integration theory of complete pre-Lie algebras in order to describe this twisting procedure in terms of gauge group action. We give a criterion on quadratic operads for the existence of a meaningful twisting procedure of their associated categories of (homotopy) algebras. We also give a new presentation of the twisting procedure f…
Quiver varieties have recently appeared in various different areas of Mathematics such as representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras and quantum groups, instantons on 4-manifolds, and resolutions Kleinian singularities. In this paper, we show that many important affine quiver varieties, e.g., the Calogero-Moser space, can be imbedded as coadjoint orbits in the dual of an appropriate infinite dimensional Lie algebra. In particular, there is an infinitesimally transitive action of the Lie algebra in question on the quiver variety. Our construction is based on an extension of Kontsevich's formal…
The associative operad is a certain algebraic structure on the sequence of group algebras of the symmetric groups. The weak order is a partial order on the symmetric group. There is a natural linear basis of each symmetric group algebra, related to the group basis by Mobius inversion for the weak order. We describe the operad structure on this second basis: the surprising result is that each operadic composition is a sum over an interval of the weak order. We deduce that the coradical filtration is an operad filtration. The Lie operad, a suboperad of the associative operad, sits in the first c…
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is composed of recollections on operad theory, model categories, simplicial homotopy theory, rational homotopy theory, Maurer-Cartan spaces, and deformation theory. The second part deals with the theory of convolution algebras and some of their applications, as explained below. Suppose we are given a type of algebras, a type of coalgebras, and a relationship between those types of algebraic structures (encoded by an operad, a cooperad, and a twisting morphism respectively). Then, it is possible to endow the space of linear maps from a coalge…
We construct an associative product on the symmetric module S(L) of any pre-Lie algebra L. Then we proove that in the case of rooted trees our construction is dual to that of Connes and Kreimer. We also show that symmetric brace algebras and pre-Lie algebras are the same. Finally, using brace algebras instead of pre-Lie algebras, we give a similar interpretation of Foissy's Hopf algebra of planar rooted trees.
The incidence category $\C_{\F}$ of a family $\F$ of colored posets closed under disjoint unions and the operation of taking convex sub-posets was introduced by the author in \cite{Sz}, where the Ringel-Hall algebra $\H_{\F}$ of $\C_{\F}$ was also defined. We show that if the Hasse diagrams underlying $\F$ are rooted trees, then the subspace $\n_{\F}$ of primitive elements of $\H_{\F}$ carries a pre-Lie structure, defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and with positive structure constants. We give several examples of $\n_{\F}$, including the nilpotent subalgebras of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, $L \mathfrak{gl}_n$…
We construct symmetric monoidal categories $\LRF, \FD$ of rooted forests and Feynman graphs. These categories closely resemble finitary abelian categories, and in particular, the notion of Ringel-Hall algebra applies. The Ringel-Hall Hopf algebras of $\LRF, \FD$, $\HH_{\LRF}, \HH_{\FD}$ are dual to the corresponding Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebras on rooted trees and Feynman graphs. We thus obtain an interpretation of the Connes-Kreimer Lie algebras on rooted trees and Feynman graphs as Ringel-Hall Lie algebras.
We define closed model category structures on different categories connected to the world of operad algebras over the category C(k) of (unbounded) complexes of k-modules: on the category of operads, on the category of algebras over a fixed operad, on the category of modules over a fixed operad algebra. In Sections 2 - 6 we define the necessary structures and provide some standard comparison results. In Section 7 we define cotangent complex. In Section 8 we define a canonical structure of homotopy Lie algebra on the tangent complex.
We propose an operadic framework suitable for describing algebraic structures with operations being multilinear differential operators of varying orders or, more generally, formal series of such operators. The framework is built upon the notion of a multifiltration of a linear operad generalizing the concept of a filtration of an associative algebra. We describe a particular way of constructing and analyzing multifiltrations based on a presentation of a linear operad in terms of generators and relations. In particular, that allows us to observe a special role played in this context by Lie, Lie…
In this article, we introduce a category of weak Lie 3-algebras with suitable weak morphisms. The definition is based on the construction of a partial resolution over $\mathbb{Z}$ of the Koszul dual cooperad of the $\textrm{Lie}$ operad, with free symmetric group action. Weak Lie 3-algebras and their morphisms are then defined via the usual operadic approach---as solutions to Maurer--Cartan equations. As 2-term truncations we recover Roytenberg's category of weak Lie 2-algebras. We prove a version of the homotopy transfer theorem for weak Lie 3-algebras. A right homotopy inverse to the resolut…
We develop a canonical pairing between trees and graphs, which passes to their quotients by Jacobi identities. This pairing is an effective and simple tool for understanding the Lie and Poisson operads, providing canonical duals. In the course of showing that this pairing is perfect we reprove some standard facts about the modules Lie(n), establishing standard bases as well as giving a new means to reduce to those bases. We then move on to define duals to free Lie algebras and to develop product, coproduct and operad structures. We give a brief account here to be built on in a number of differ…
We study a family of Lie algebras {hO} which are defined for cyclic operads O. Using his graph homology theory, Kontsevich identified the homology of two of these Lie algebras (corresponding to the Lie and associative operads) with the cohomology of outer automorphism groups of free groups and mapping class groups of punctured surfaces, respectively. In this paper we introduce a hairy graph homology theory for O. We show that the homology of hO embeds in hairy graph homology via a trace map which generalizes the trace map defined by S. Morita. For the Lie operad we use the trace map to find la…
We study properties of differential graded (dg) operads modulo weak equivalences, that is, modulo the relation given by the existence of a chain of dg operad maps inducing a homology isomorphism. This approach, naturally arising in string theory, leads us to consider various versions of models. Besides of some applications in topology and homological algebra we show that our theory enables one to prove the existence of homotopy structures on physically relevant spaces. For example, we prove that a closed string-field theory induces a homotopy Lie algebra structure on the space of relative stat…
In this paper we develop the $A_\infty$-analog of the Maurer-Cartan simplicial set associated to an $L_\infty$-algebra and show how we can use this to study the deformation theory of $\infty$-morphisms of algebras over non-symmetric operads. More precisely, we define a functor from the category of (curved) $A_\infty$-algebras to simplicial sets which sends an $A_\infty$-algebra to the associated simplicial set of Maurer-Cartan elements. This functor has the property that it gives a Kan complex. We also show that this functor can be used to study deformation problems over a field of characteris…
