This thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is composed of recollections on operad theory, model categories, simplicial homotopy theory, rational homotopy theory, Maurer-Cartan spaces, and deformation theory. The second part deals with the theory of convolution algebras and some of their applications, as explained below.
Suppose we are given a type of algebras, a type of coalgebras, and a relationship between those types of algebraic structures (encoded by an operad, a cooperad, and a twisting morphism respectively). Then, it is possible to endow the space of linear maps from a coalgebra C and an algebra A with a natural structure of Lie algebra up to homotopy. We call the resulting homotopy Lie algebra the convolution algebra of A and C. We study the theory of convolution algebras and their compatibility with the tools of homotopical algebra: infinity morphisms and the homotopy transfer theorem. After doing that, we apply this theory to various domains, such as derived deformation theory and rational homotopy theory. In the first case, we use the tools we developed to construct an universal Lie algebra representing the space of Maurer-Cartan elements, a fundamental object of deformation theory. In the second case, we generalize a result of Berglund on rational models for mapping spaces between pointed topological spaces. In the last chapter of this thesis, we give a new approach to two important theorems in deformation theory: the Goldman-Millson theorem and the Dolgushev-Rogers theorem.
First we argue that many BV and homotopy BV structures, including both familiar and new examples, arise from a common underlying construction. The input of this construction is a cyclic operad along with a cyclically invariant Maurer-Cartan element in an associated Lie algebra. Using this result we introduce and study the operad of cyclically invariant operations, with instances arising in cyclic cohomology and $S^1$ equivariant homology. We compute the homology of the cyclically invariant operations; the result being the homology operad of $\mathcal{M}_{0,n+1}$, the uncompactified moduli spac…

The Deligne-Getzler-Hinich--$\infty$-groupoid or Maurer-Cartan simplicial set of an $L_\infty$-algebra plays an important role in deformation theory and many other areas of mathematics. Unfortunately, this construction only works over a field of characteristic $0$. The goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Maurer-Cartan equation and Maurer-Cartan simplicial set can be defined for a much larger number of operads than just the $L_\infty$-operad. More precisely, we show that the Koszul dual of every unital Hopf cooperad (a cooperad in the category of unital associative algebras) with …
We study Maurer-Cartan moduli spaces of dg algebras and associated dg categories and show that, while not quasi-isomorphism invariants, they are invariants of strong homotopy type, a natural notion that has not been studied before. We prove, in several different contexts, Schlessinger-Stasheff type theorems comparing the notions of homotopy and gauge equivalence for Maurer-Cartan elements as well as their categorified versions. As an application, we re-prove and generalize Block-Smith's higher Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, and develop its analogue for simplicial complexes and topological spa…
We study several homotopical and geometric properties of Maurer-Cartan spaces for L-infinity algebras which are not nilpotent, but only filtered in a suitable way. Such algebras play a key role especially in the deformation theory of algebraic structures. In particular, we prove that the Maurer-Cartan simplicial set preserves fibrations and quasi-isomorphisms. Then we present an algebraic geometry viewpoint on Maurer-Cartan moduli sets, and we compute the tangent complex of the associated algebraic stack.
We consider the category whose objects are filtered, or complete, $L_\infty$-algebras and whose morphisms are $\infty$-morphisms which respect the filtrations. We then discuss the homotopical properties of the Getzler-Hinich simplicial Maurer-Cartan functor which associates to each filtered $L_\infty$-algebra a Kan simplicial set, or $\infty$-groupoid. In previous work with V. Dolgushev, we showed that this functor sends weak equivalences of filtered $L_\infty$-algebras to weak homotopy equivalences of simplicial sets. Here we sketch a proof of the fact that this functor also sends fibrations …
We develop the basic theory of Maurer-Cartan simplicial sets associated to (shifted complete) $L_\infty$ algebras equipped with the action of a finite group. Our main result asserts that the inclusion of the fixed points of this equivariant simplicial set into the homotopy fixed points is a homotopy equivalence of Kan complexes, provided the $L_\infty$ algebra is concentrated in non-negative degrees. As an application, and under certain connectivity assumptions, we provide rational algebraic models of the fixed and homotopy fixed points of mapping spaces equipped with the action of a finite gr…
We show an alternative construction of the cosimplicial free complete diferential graded Lie algebra $\mathfrak{L}_\bullet=\widehat{\mathbb{L}}(s^{-1}Δ^\bullet)$ based on a new Lie bracket formulae for Lie polynomials on a general tensor algebra. Based on it,we prove that for any complete differential graded Lie algebra $L$, its geometrical realization $\langle L\rangle=\text{Hom}_{\text{cdgl}}(\mathfrak{L}_\bullet,L)$ is isomorphic to its nerve $γ_\bullet(L)$, a deformation retract of the Getzler-Hinich realization $\text{MC}(\mathscr{A}_\bullet\widehat{\otimes} L)$.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a curved $L_\infty$-algebra endowed with a complete filtration $\mathfrak{F}\mathfrak{g}$. Suppose there exists an integer $r \in \mathbb{N}_0$ for which the curvature $μ_0$ satisfies $μ_0 \in \mathfrak{F}_{2r+1} \mathfrak{g}$ and the spectral sequence yields $E_{r+1}^{p,q} =0$ for $p,q$ with $p+q=2$. We prove that then a Maurer-Cartan element exists. In addition, we show, as a typical application, that for $P$ a possibly inhomogeneous Koszul operad with generating set in arities 1,2 (e.g. $P$=Com,As,BV,Lie,Ger), a $P_\infty$-algebra $A$ is intrinsically formal if its twi…
In a previous work, we have associated a complete differential graded Lie algebra to any finite simplicial complex in a functorial way. Similarly, we have also a realization functor from the category of complete differential graded Lie algebras to the category of simplicial sets. We have already interpreted the homology of a Lie algebra in terms of homotopy groups of its realization. In this paper, we begin a dictionary between models and simplicial complexes by establishing a correspondence between the Deligne groupoid of the model and the connected components of the finite simplicial complex…
In this paper we develop the $A_\infty$-analog of the Maurer-Cartan simplicial set associated to an $L_\infty$-algebra and show how we can use this to study the deformation theory of $\infty$-morphisms of algebras over non-symmetric operads. More precisely, we define a functor from the category of (curved) $A_\infty$-algebras to simplicial sets which sends an $A_\infty$-algebra to the associated simplicial set of Maurer-Cartan elements. This functor has the property that it gives a Kan complex. We also show that this functor can be used to study deformation problems over a field of characteris…
We define a simplicial enrichment on the category of differential graded Hopf cooperads (the category of dg Hopf cooperads for short). We prove that our simplicial enrichment satisfies, in part, the axioms of a simplicial model category structure on the category of dg Hopf cooperads. We use this simplicial model structure to define a model of mapping spaces in the category of dg Hopf cooperads and to upgrade results of the literature about the homotopy automorphism spaces of dg Hopf cooperads by dealing with simplicial monoid structures. The rational homotopy theory of operads implies that the…
This paper provides a conceptual study of the twisting procedure, which amounts to create functorially new differential graded Lie algebras, associative algebras or operads (as well as their homotopy versions) from a Maurer--Cartan element. On the way, we settle the integration theory of complete pre-Lie algebras in order to describe this twisting procedure in terms of gauge group action. We give a criterion on quadratic operads for the existence of a meaningful twisting procedure of their associated categories of (homotopy) algebras. We also give a new presentation of the twisting procedure f…
In this paper we show that non abelian extensions of an associative algebra $\mathcal{B}$ by an associative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ can be viewed as Maurer-Cartan elements of a suitable differential graded Lie algebra $L$. In particular we show that $\mathcal{MC}(L)$, the Deligne groupoid of $L$, is in 1-1 correspondence with the non-abelian cohomology $H^2_{nab}(\mathcal{B},\mathcal{A})$.
The Cartan formula encodes the relationship between the cup product and the action of the Steenrod algebra in $\mathbb F_p$-cohomology. In this work, we present an effective proof of the Cartan formula at the cochain level when the field is $\mathbb F_2$. More explicitly, for an arbitrary pair of cocycles and any non-negative integer, we construct a natural coboundary that descends to the associated instance of the Cartan formula. Our construction works for general algebras over the Barratt-Eccles operad, in particular, for the singular cochains of spaces.
We study the Eckmann-Hilton dual of the little disks algebra structure on iterated loop spaces: With the right definitions, every $n$-fold suspension is a coalgebra over the little $n$-disks operad. This structure induces non-trivial cooperations on the rational homotopy groups of an $n$-fold suspension. We describe the Eckmann-Hilton dual of the Browder bracket, which is a cooperation that forms an obstruction for an $n$-fold suspension to be an $(n+1)$-fold suspension, i.e. if this cooperation is non-zero then the space is not an $(n+1)$-fold suspension. We prove several results in equivaria…
The configuration space of $n$ marked points on the complex plane is considered. We investigate a decomposition of this space by so-called Gauss-skizze i.e. a class of graphs being forests, introduced by Gauss. It is proved that this decomposition is a semi-algebraic topological stratification. It also forms a cell decomposition of the configuration space of $n$ marked points. Moreover, we prove that classical tools from deformation theory, ruled by a Maurer--Cartan equation, can be used only locally for Gauss-skizze. We prove that the deformation of the Gauss-skizze is governed by a Hamilton-…
We construct Lie algebras of derivations (and identify their geometrical realization) whose Maurer-Cartan sets provide moduli spaces describing the classes of homotopy types of rational spaces sharing either the same homotopy Lie algebra, homology or cohomology.
In order to solve two problems in deformation theory, we establish natural structures of homotopy Lie algebras and of homotopy associative algebras on tensor products of algebras of different types and on mapping spaces between coalgebras and algebras. When considering tensor products, such algebraic structures extend the Lie algebra or associative algebra structures that can be obtained by means of the Manin products of operads. These new homotopy algebra structures are proven by to compatible with the concepts of homotopy theory: $\infty$-morphisms and the Homotopy Transfer Theorem. We give …
A quantization of classical deformation theory, based on the Maurer-Cartan Equation $dS + \frac{1}{2}[S,S] = 0$ in dg-Lie algebras, a theory based on the Quantum Master Equation $dS + \hbar ΔS + \frac{1}{2} \{S,S\} = 0$ in dg-BV-algebras, is proposed. Representability theorems for solutions of the Quantum Master Equation are proven. Examples of "quantum" deformations are presented.
