We analyze a model for the homotopy theory of complete filtered $L_\infty$-algebras intended for applications in algebraic and algebro-geometric deformation theory. We provide an explicit proof of an unpublished result of E.\ Getzler which states that the category $\hat{\mathsf{Lie}}_\infty$ of such $L_\infty$-algebras and filtration-preserving $\infty$-morphisms admits the structure of a category of fibrant objects (CFO) for a homotopy theory. Novel applications of our approach include explicit models for homotopy pullbacks, and an analog of Whitehead's Theorem: under some mild conditions, every filtered $L_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism in $\hat{\mathsf{Lie}}_\infty$ has a filtration preserving homotopy inverse. Also, we show that the simplicial Maurer--Cartan functor, which assigns a Kan simplicial set to each $L_\infty$-algebra in $\hat{\mathsf{Lie}}_\infty$, is an exact functor between the respective CFOs. Finally, we provide an obstruction theory for the general problem of lifting a Maurer-Cartan element through an $\infty$-morphism. The obstruction classes reside in the associated graded mapping cone of the corresponding tangent map.
We define a notion of homotopy Segal cooperad in the category of $ E_\infty $-algebras. This model of Segal cooperad that we define in the paper, which we call homotopy Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperad, covers examples given by the cochain complex of topological operads and provides a framework for the study of the homotopy of such objects. In a first step, we consider a category of Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperads, which consists of collections of $ E_\infty $-algebras indexed by trees and equipped with coproduct operators, corresponding to tree morphisms, together with facet operators, corr…
Evidence is given for the correctness of the Joyal-Riehl-Verity construction of the homotopy bicategory of the $(\infty, 2)$-category of $(\infty, 1)$-categories; in particular, it is shown that the analogous construction using complete Segal spaces instead of quasicategories yields a bicategorically equivalent 2-category.
We present a slight variation on a notion of weak \infty-groupoid introduced by Grothendieck in Pursuing Stacks and we study the homotopy theory of these \infty-groupoids. We prove that the obvious definition for homotopy groups of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids does not depend on any choice. This allows us to give equivalent characterizations of weak equivalences of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids, generalizing a well-known result for strict \infty-groupoids. On the other hand, given a model category M in which every object is fibrant, we construct, following Grothendieck, a fundamental \infty-g…
The purpose of this text is the study of the class of homotopy types which are modelized by strict \infty-groupoids. We show that the homotopy category of simply connected \infty-groupoids is equivalent to the derived category in homological degree greater or equal to 2 of abelian groups. We deduce that the simply connected homotopy types modelized by strict \infty-groupoids are precisely the products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. We also briefly study 3-categories with weak inverses. We finish by two questions about the problem suggested by the title of this text.
We compare two models for $\infty$-operads: the complete Segal operads of Barwick and the complete dendroidal Segal spaces of Cisinski and Moerdijk. Combining this with comparison results already in the literature, this implies that all known models for $\infty$-operads are equivalent - for instance, it follows that the homotopy theory of Lurie's $\infty$-operads is equivalent to that of dendroidal sets and that of simplicial operads.
We study cohomology theories of strongly homotopy algebras, namely $A_\infty, C_\infty$ and $L_\infty$-algebras and establish the Hodge decomposition of Hochschild and cyclic cohomology of $C_\infty$-algebras thus generalising previous work by Loday and Gerstenhaber-Schack. These results are then used to show that a $C_\infty$-algebra with an invariant inner product on its cohomology can be uniquely extended to a symplectic $C_\infty$-algebra (an $\infty$-generalisation of a commutative Frobenius algebra introduced by Kontsevich). As another application, we show that the `string topology' oper…
We prove that strongly homotopy algebras (such as $A_\infty$, $C_\infty$, sh Lie, $B_\infty$, $G_\infty$,...) are homotopically invariant in the category of chain complexes. An important consequence is a rigorous proof that `strongly homotopy structures transfer over chain homotopy equivalences.'
In the rational cohomology of a 1-connected space a structure of $C_{\infty}$-algebra is constructed and it is shown that this object determines the rational homotopy type
This paper is part of a series of papers about homotopy theory of strict $n$-categories. In the first paper of this series, we gave conditions that guarantee the existence of a Thomason model category structure on the category of strict $n$-categories. The main goal of our paper is to show one of these conditions. To do so, we associate to any simplicial complex a strict $\infty$-category generated by a computad. We conjecture that this $\infty$-category has the same homotopy type as the corresponding simplicial complex and we prove this conjecture when the simplicial complex comes from a pose…
This is an expository paper providing an overview of the unstable motivic homotopy category using the theory of $(\infty,1)$-categories. In this paper, we examine two constructions in the literature and discuss their equivalence.
We prove the existence of Morita model structures on the categories of small simplicial categories, simplicial sets, simplicial operads and dendroidal sets, modelling the Morita homotopy theory of $(\infty,1)$-categories and $\infty$-operads. We give a characterization of the weak equivalences in terms of simplicial presheaves, simplicial algebras and slice categories. In the case of the Morita model structure for simplicial categories and simplicial operads, we also show that each of these model structures can be obtained as an explicit left Bousfield localization of the Bergner model structu…

We show that the tensor product of two cyclic $A_\infty$-algebras is, in general, not a cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra, but an $A_\infty$-algebra with homotopy inner product. More precisely, we construct an explicit combinatorial diagonal on the pairahedra, which are contractible polytopes controlling the combinatorial structure of an $A_\infty$-algebra with homotopy inner products, and use it to define a categorically closed tensor product. A cyclic $A_\infty$-algebra can be thought of as an $A_\infty$-algebra with homotopy inner products whose higher inner products are trivial. However, the highe…
We give a construction of the universal enveloping $A_\infty$ algebra of a given $L_\infty$ algebra, alternative to the already existing versions. As applications, we derive a higher homotopy algebras version of the classical Milnor-Moore theorem, proposing a new $A_\infty$ model for simply connected rational homotopy types, and uncovering a relationship between the higher order rational Whitehead products in homotopy groups and the Pontryagin-Massey products in the rational loop space homology algebra.
We define homotopy group actions in terms of families of $A_\infty$ algebras indexed by a manifold M. We give explicit formulae for the $A_\infty$ morphism induced by a path on the manifold and for the $A_\infty$ homotopy corresponding to a pair of homotopic paths. Finally, we compute examples for finite groups and finitely generated free nonabelian groups and determine that every homotopy group action by a finite group is homotopic to a strict group action.
This is my attempt to rediscover how Dennis realized that he had discovered/invented $L_\infty$-algebras a.k.a. strongly homotopy Lie algebras before my colleagues and I defined them.
We develop a homotopy theory of $L_\infty$ algebras based on the Lawrence-Sullivan construction, a complete differential graded Lie algebra which, as we show, satisfies the necessary properties to become the right cylinder in this category. As a result, we obtain a general procedure to algebraically model the rational homotopy type of non-connected spaces.
In previous work, we used an $\infty$-categorical version of ultraproducts to show that, for a fixed height $n$, the symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories of $E_{n,p}$-local spectra are asymptotically algebraic in the prime $p$. In this paper, we prove the analogous result for the symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories of $K_{p}(n)$-local spectra, where $K_{p}(n)$ is Morava $K$-theory at height $n$ and the prime $p$. This requires $\infty$-categorical tools suitable for working with compactly generated symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with non-compact unit. The equivalences that we prod…
The present article is devoted to the study of transfers for $A_\infty$ structures, their maps and homotopies, as developed in \cite{Markl06}. In particular, we supply the proofs of claims formulated therein and provide their extension by comparing them with the former approach based on the homological perturbation lemma.
In this paper we give a summary of the comparisons between different definitions of so-called (\infty,1)-categories, which are considered to be models for \infty-categories whose n-morphisms are all invertible for n>1. They are also, from the viewpoint of homotopy theory, models for the homotopy theory of homotopy theories. The four different structures, all of which are equivalent, are simplicial categories, Segal categories, complete Segal spaces, and quasi-categories.
In this paper we describe explicit $L_\infty$ algebras modeling the rational homotopy type of any component of the spaces $\map(X,Y)$ and $\map^*(X,Y)$ of free and pointed maps between the finite nilpotent CW-complex $X$ and the finite type nilpotent CW-complex $Y$. When $X$ is of finite type, non necessarily finite, we also show that the algebraic covers of these $L_\infty$ algebras model the universal covers of the corresponding mapping spaces.
The dihedral homology functor $HD:A_\infty^{\rm inv}(K)\to GrM(K)$ from the category $A_\infty^{\rm inv}(K)$ of involutive $A_\infty$-algebras over any commutative unital ring $K$ to the category $GrM(K)$ of graded $K$-modules is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalences of involutive $A_\infty$-algebras into isomorphisms of graded modules.
We study the left adjoint $\mathbb{D}$ to the forgetful functor from the $\infty$-category of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with duals and finite colimits to the $\infty$-category of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories with finite colimits, and related free constructions. The main result is that $\mathbb{D} \mathcal C$ always splits as the product of 3 factors, each characterized by a certain universal property. As an application, we show that, for any compact Lie group $G$, the $\infty$-category of genuine $G$-spectra is obtained from the $\infty$-category of Bredon (\emph{a.k.a} …
In the present paper the cyclic homology functor from the category of $A_\infty$-algebras over any commutative unital ring $K$ to the category of graded $K$-modules is constructed. Further, it is showed that this functor sends homotopy equivalences of $A_\infty$-algebras into isomorphisms of graded modules. As a corollary, it is obtained that the cyclic homology of an $A_\infty$-algebra over any field is isomorphic to the cyclic homology of the $A_\infty$-algebra of homologies for the source $A_\infty$-algebra.
By homotopy linear algebra we mean the study of linear functors between slices of the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-groupoids, subject to certain finiteness conditions. After some standard definitions and results, we assemble said slices into $\infty$-categories to model the duality between vector spaces and profinite-dimensional vector spaces, and set up a global notion of homotopy cardinality à la Baez-Hoffnung-Walker compatible with this duality. We needed these results to support our work on incidence algebras and Möbius inversion over $\infty$-groupoids; we hope that they can also be of i…
Lie $n$-algebras are the $L_\infty$ analogs of chain Lie algebras from rational homotopy theory. Henriques showed that finite type Lie $n$-algebras can be integrated to produce certain simplicial Banach manifolds, known as Lie $\infty$-groups, via a smooth analog of Sullivan's realization functor. In this paper, we provide an explicit proof that the category of finite type Lie $n$-algebras and (weak) $L_\infty$-morphisms admits the structure of a category of fibrant objects (CFO) for a homotopy theory. Roughly speaking, this CFO structure can be thought of as the transfer of the classical proj…
Theorem (after Giraud, SGA 4): Suppose $A$ is a simplicial category. The following conditions are equivalent: (i) There is a cofibrantly generated closed model category $M$ such that $A$ is equivalent to the Dwyer-Kan simplicial localization $L(M)$; (ii) $A$ admits all small homotopy colimits, and there is a small subset of objects of $A$ which are $A$-small, and which generate $A$ by homotopy colimits; (iii) There exists a small 1-category $C$ and a morphism $g:C\to A$ sending objects of $C$ to $A$-small objects, which induces a fully faithful inclusion $i:A\to \hat{C}$, such that $i$ admits …
We study extensively the homotopy theory of coalgebras. By coalgebras, we mean the full theory of coalgebras: with counits and not necessarily locally conilpotent. For example $\mathcal E_\infty$-coalgebras, $\mathcal A_\infty$-coalgebras, $\mathcal L_\infty$-coalgebras etc. To do so, we define the category of complete curved algebras -- where the notion of quasi-isomorphims does not make sense -- and endow it with a model category structure, equivalent to that of the category of coalgebras.
The settings for homotopical algebra---categories such as simplicial groups, simplicial rings, $A_\infty$ spaces, $E_\infty$ ring spectra, etc.---are often equivalent to categories of algebras over some monad or triple $T$. In such cases, $T$ is acting on a nice simplicial model category in such a way that $T$ descends to a monad on the homotopy category and defines a category of homotopy $T$-algebras. In this setting there is a forgetful functor from the homotopy category of $T$-algebras to the category of homotopy $T$-algebras. Under suitable hypotheses we provide an obstruction theory, in t…
A homotopy analogue of the notion of a triangular Lie bialgebra is proposed with a goal of extending the basic notions of theory of quantum groups to the context of homotopy algebras and, in particular, introducing a homotopical generalization of the notion of a quantum group, or quantum$_\infty$-group.
We give explicit formulas for transfers of $A_\infty$-structures and related maps and homotopies in the most easy situation in which these transfers exist. One half of our formulas was already known to Kontsevich-Soibelman and to Merkulov who derived them, without explicit signs, under slightly stronger assumptions than those made in this note.
Associated to each small category $C$, there is a category of $C$-shaped diagrams of simplicial sets and an $\infty$-category of $NC$-shaped homotopy coherent diagrams of spaces. We present a functor which exhibits the latter as the $\infty$-categorical localisation of the former at the objectwise weak homotopy equivalences. This builds on a Quillen equivalence between the projective and covariant model structures associated to $C$ due to Heuts-Moerdijk, as well as Cisinski's theory of $\infty$-categorical localisations. We use the localisation functor to give simplified proofs that the left (…
In order to solve two problems in deformation theory, we establish natural structures of homotopy Lie algebras and of homotopy associative algebras on tensor products of algebras of different types and on mapping spaces between coalgebras and algebras. When considering tensor products, such algebraic structures extend the Lie algebra or associative algebra structures that can be obtained by means of the Manin products of operads. These new homotopy algebra structures are proven by to compatible with the concepts of homotopy theory: $\infty$-morphisms and the Homotopy Transfer Theorem. We give …
We establish a large class of homotopy coherent Morita-equivalences of Dold-Kan type relating diagrams with values in any weakly idempotent complete additive $\infty$-category; the guiding example is an $\infty$-categorical Dold-Kan correspondence between the $\infty$-categories of simplicial objects and connective coherent chain complexes. Our results generalize many known 1-categorical equivalences such as the classical Dold-Kan correspondence, Pirashvili's Dold-Kan type theorem for abelian $Γ$-groups and, more generally, the combinatorial categorical equivalences of Lack and Street.
We use Chen's iterated integrals to integrate representations up to homotopy. That is, we construct an A_infty functor from the representations up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid to those of its infinity groupoid. This construction extends the usual integration of representations in Lie theory. We discuss several examples including Lie algebras and Poisson manifolds. The construction is based on an A_infty version of de Rham's theorem due to Gugenheim. The integration procedure we explain here amounts to extending the construction of parallel transport for superconnections, introduced by Igusa …
We show that conically smooth stratified spaces embed fully faithfully into $\infty$-categories. This articulates a stratified generalization of the homotopy hypothesis proposed by Grothendieck. As such, each $\infty$-category defines a stack on conically smooth stratified spaces, and we identify the descent conditions it satisfies. These include $\mathbb{R}^1$-invariance and descent for open covers and blow-ups, analogous to sheaves for the h-topology in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. In this way, we identify $\infty$-categories as striation sheaves, which are those sheaves on conically smoo…
An affine action of an associative algebra $A$ on a vector space $V$ is an algebra morphism $A \to V \rtimes {\rm End}(V)$, where $V$ is a vector space and $V \rtimes {\rm End}(V)$ is the algebra of affine transformations of $V$. The one dimensional version of the Swiss-Cheese operad, denoted ${\mathrm{\bf{sc}}}_1$, is the operad that governs affine actions of associative algebras. This operad is Koszul and admits a minimal model denoted by $({\mathrm{\bf{sc}}}_1)_\infty$. Algebras over this minimal model are called Homotopy Affine Actions, they consist of an $A_\infty$-morphism $A \to V \rtim…
The goal of this paper is to complete Getzler-Jones' proof of Deligne's Conjecture, thereby establishing an explicit relationship between the geometry of configurations of points in the plane and the Hochschild complex of an associative algebra. More concretely, it is shown that the $B_\infty$-operad, which is generated by multilinear operations known to act on the Hochschild complex, is a quotient of a certain operad associated to the compactified configuration spaces. Different notions of homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras are discussed: one of them is a $B_\infty$-algebra, another, called a hom…
Lie $\infty$-groupoids are simplicial Banach manifolds that satisfy an analog of the Kan condition for simplicial sets. An explicit construction of Henriques produces certain Lie $\infty$-groupoids called `Lie $\infty$-groups' by integrating finite type Lie $n$-algebras. In order to study the compatibility between this integration procedure and the homotopy theory of Lie $n$-algebras introduced in the companion paper arXiv:1809.05999, we present a homotopy theory for Lie $\infty$-groupoids. Unlike Kan simplicial sets and the higher geometric groupoids of Behrend and Getzler, Lie $\infty$-group…
As an application of the upper triangular technology method of (V.P. Snaith: {\em Stable homotopy -- around the Arf-Kervaire invariant}; Birkhäuser Progress on Math. Series vol. 273 (April 2009)) it is shown that there do not exist stable homotopy classes of $ {\mathbb RP}^{\infty} \wedge {\mathbb RP}^{\infty}$ in dimension $2^{s+1}-2$ with $s \geq 2$ whose composition with the Hopf map to $ {\mathbb RP}^{\infty}$ followed by the Kahn-Priddy map gives an element in the stable homotopy of spheres of Arf-Kervaire invariant one.
From the `cofree' cooperad $T'(A[-1])$ on a collection $A$ together with a differential, we construct an $L_\infty$-algebra structure on the total space $\bigoplus_nA(n)$ that descends to coinvariants. We use this construction to define an $L_\infty$-algebra controlling deformations of the operad $P$ under $Q$ from a cofibrant resolution for an operad $Q$, and an operad map $Q\longrightarrow P$. Starting from a diffent cofibrant resolution one obtains a quasi isomorohic $L_\infty$-algebra. This approach unifies Markl's cotangent cohomology of operads and the approaches to deformation of $Q$-al…
We axiomatise the theory of $(\infty,n)$-categories. We prove that the space of theories of $(\infty,n)$-categories is a $B(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$. We prove that Rezk's complete Segal $Θ_n$-spaces, Simpson and Tamsamani's Segal $n$-categories, the first author's $n$-fold complete Segal spaces, Kan and the first author's $n$-relative categories, and complete Segal space objects in any model of $(\infty,n-1)$-categories all satisfy our axioms. Consequently, these theories are all equivalent in a manner that is unique up to the action of $(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$.
In this paper, we use homotopical algebra (or abstract homotopical methods) to study smooth homotopical problems of infinite-dimensional $C^\infty$-manifolds in convenient calculus. More precisely, we discuss the smoothing of maps, sections, principal bundles, and gauge transformations. We first introduce the notion of hereditary $C^\infty$-paracompactness along with the semiclassicality condition on a $C^\infty$-manifold, which enables us to use local convexity in local arguments. Then, we prove that for $C^\infty$-manifolds $M$ and $N$, the smooth singular complex of $C^\infty(M,N)$ is weakl…
We combine Sullivan models from rational homotopy theory with Stasheff's $L_\infty$-algebras to describe a duality in string theory. Namely, what in string theory is known as topological T-duality between $K^0$-cocycles in type IIA string theory and $K^1$-cocycles in type IIB string theory, or as Hori's formula, can be recognized as a Fourier-Mukai transform between twisted cohomologies when looked through the lenses of rational homotopy theory. We show this as an example of topological T-duality in rational homotopy theory, which in turn can be completely formulated in terms of morphisms of $…
The goal of this paper is to prove an equivalence between the model categorical approach to pro-categories, as studied by Isaksen, Schlank and the first author, and the $\infty$-categorical approach, as developed by Lurie. Three applications of our main result are described. In the first application we use (a dual version of) our main result to give sufficient conditions on an $ω$-combinatorial model category, which insure that its underlying $\infty$-category is $ω$-presentable. In the second application we consider the pro-category of simplicial étale sheaves and use it to show that the topo…
