We define and study a series indexed by rooted trees and with coefficients in Q(q). We show that it is related to a family of Lie idempotents. We prove that this series is a q-deformation of a more classical series and that some of its coefficients are Carlitz q-Bernoulli numbers.

Several generating series for flows on rooted trees are introduced, as elements in the group of series associated with the Pre-Lie operad. By combinatorial arguments, one proves identities that characterise these series. One then gives a complete description of the image of these series in the group of series associated with the Dendriform operad. This allows to recover the Lie idempotents in the descent algebras recently introduced by Menous, Novelli and Thibon. Moreover, one defines new Lie idempotents and conjecture the existence of some others.

We find a relation between two Hopf algebras built on rooted trees. The first is the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra H_R which describes a certain type of renormalization in quantum field theory; the second is the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra A introduced ten years ago by some "differential" and combinatorial reasons. Roughly, the relation is the following: there exists a duality between these two Hopf algebras. We construct symmetric monoidal categories $\LRF, \FD$ of rooted forests and Feynman graphs. These categories closely resemble finitary abelian categories, and in particular, the notion of Ringel-Hall algebra applies. The Ringel-Hall Hopf algebras of $\LRF, \FD$, $\HH_{\LRF}, \HH_{\FD}$ are dual to the corresponding Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebras on rooted trees and Feynman graphs. We construct natural representations of the Connes-Kreimer Lie algebras on rooted trees/Feynman graphs arising from Hecke correspondences in the categories $\LRF, \LFG$ constructed by K. Kremnizer and the author. We thus obtain the insertion/elimination representations constructed by Connes-Kreimer as well as an isomorphic pair we term top-insertion/top-elimination. We also construct graded finite-dimensional sub/quotient representations of these arising from "truncated" correspondences.

A Pre-Lie algebra is a vector space L endowed with a bilinear product * : L \times L to L satisfying the relation (x*y)*z-x*(y*z)= (x*z)*y-x*(z*y), for all x,y,z in L. We give an explicit combinatorial description in terms of rooted trees of the operad associated to this type of algebras and prove that it is a Koszul operad.

We exhibit a monoidal structure on the category of finite sets indexed by P-trees for a finitary polynomial endofunctor P. This structure categorifies the monoid scheme (over Spec N) whose semiring of functions is (a P-version of) the Connes--Kreimer bialgebra H of rooted trees (a Hopf algebra after base change to Z and collapsing H_0). The monoidal structure is itself given by a polynomial functor, represented by three easily described set maps; we show that these maps are the same as those occurring in the polynomial representation of the free monad on P.
We show how the Hopf algebra of rooted trees encodes the combinatorics of Epstein-Glaser renormalization and coordinate space renormalization in general. In particular we prove that the Epstein-Glaser time-ordered products can be obtained from the Hopf algebra by suitable Feynman rules, mapping trees to operator-valued distributions.
