We begin by considering the graded vector space with a basis consisting of rooted trees, graded by the count of non-root vertices. We define two linear operators on this vector space, the growth and pruning operators, which respectively raise and lower grading; their commutator is the operator that multiplies a rooted tree by its number of vertices. We define an inner product with respect to which the growth and pruning operators are adjoint, and obtain several results about the multiplicities associated with each operator.
The symmetric algebra on the vector space of rooted trees (after a degree shift) can be endowed with a coproduct to make a Hopf algebra; this was defined by Kreimer in connection with renormalization. We extend the growth and pruning operators, as well as the inner product mentioned above, to Kreimer's Hopf algebra. On the other hand, the vector space of rooted trees itself can be given a noncommutative multiplication: with an appropriate coproduct, this gives the Hopf algebra of Grossman and Larson. We show the inner product on rooted trees leads to an isomorphism of the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra with the graded dual of Kreimer's Hopf algebra, correcting an earlier result of Panaite.
In this paper, we construct explicitly a noncommutative symmetric (${\mathcal N}$CS) system over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of labeled rooted trees. By the universal property of the ${\mathcal N}$CS system formed by the generating functions of certain noncommutative symmetric functions, we obtain a specialization of noncommutative symmetric functions by labeled rooted trees. Taking the graded duals, we also get a graded Hopf algebra homomorphism from the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of labeled rooted forests to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. A connection of the coefficient…
We review the relation between the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions and the multiple zeta values, and then discuss a commutative diagram involving the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions, the Hopf algebra dual NSym of QSym, and the Hopf algebras of rooted trees and planar rooted trees as defined by Kreimer and Foissy respectively.
Recent work on perturbative quantum field theory has led to much study of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. Its (graded) dual, the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra of rooted trees, had already been studied by algebraists. L. Foissy introduced a noncommutative version of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra, which turns out to be self-dual. Using some homomorphisms defined by the author and W. Zhao, we describe a commutative diagram that relates the aforementioned Hopf algebras to each other and to the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and quasi-symmetric functions…
Recent advances in stochastic PDEs, Hopf algebras of typed trees and integral equations have inspired the study of algebraic structures with replicating operations. To understand their algebraic and combinatorial nature, we first use rooted forests with multiple decoration sets to construct free Hopf algebras with multiple Hochschild 1-cocycle conditions. Applying the universal property of the underlying operated algebras and the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we then construct free objects in the category of matching Rota-Baxter algebras which is a generalization of Rota-Baxter algebras to…

By means of a new notion of subforests of an angularly decorated rooted forest, we give a combinatorial construction of a coproduct on the free Rota-Baxter algebra on angularly decorated rooted forests. We show that this coproduct equips the Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure and further a Hopf algebra structure.
The Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees, its dual, and the Foissy Hopf algebra of of planar rooted trees are related to each other and to the well-known Hopf algebras of symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions via a pair of commutative diagrams. We show how this point of view can simplify computations in the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra and its dual, particularly for combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations.
The perturbation expansion of the solution of a fixed point equation or of an ordinary differential equation may be expressed as a power series in the perturbation parameter. The terms in this series are indexed by rooted trees and depend on a parameter in the equation in a way determined by the structure of the tree. Power series of this form may be considered more generally; there are two interesting and useful group structures on these series, corresponding to operations of composition and substitution. The composition operation defines the Butcher group, an infinite dimensional group that …
In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization to general perturbations, the combinatorial aspects of the Hopf algebra of the $ϕ$-deformed stuffle product is developed systematically in a parallel way with those of the shuffle product.
The Hopf algebra and the Rota-Baxter algebra are the two algebraic structures underlying the algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory. In particular the Hopf algebra of rooted trees serves as the "baby model" of Feynman graphs in their approach and can be characterized by certain universal properties involving a Hochschild 1-cocycle. Decorated rooted trees have also been applied to study Feynman graphs. We will continue the study of universal properties of various spaces of decorated rooted trees with such a 1-cocycle, leading to the conc…
This paper introduces the braidings of dendriform algebras and tridendriform algebras. By studying free braided dendriform algebras, we obtain braidings of the Hopf algebras of Loday and Ronco of planar binary rooted trees. We also give a variation of the braiding of Foissy for the noncommutative Connes-Kreimer (a.k.a the Foissy-Holtkamp) Hopf algebra of planar rooted forests so that the well-known isomorphism between this Hopf algebra and the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra is extended to the braided context. As free braided tridendriform algebras, we also give braided extension of the Hopf algebra …
In this article, we are interested in the Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_{D}$ of dissection diagrams introduced by Dupont in his thesis. We use the version with a parameter $x\in\mathbb{K}$. We want to study its underlying coalgebra. We conjecture it is cofree, except for a countable subset of $\mathbb{K}$. If $x=-1$ then we know there is no cofreedom. We easily see that $\mathcal{H}\_{D}$ is a free commutative right-sided combinatorial Hopf algebra according to Loday and Ronco. So, there exists a pre-Lie structure on its graded dual. Furthermore ${\mathcal{H}_{D}}^{\circledast}$ and the enveloping…
The theme of this article is the algebraic combinatorics of leaf-labeled rooted binary trees and forests of such trees. The structure of a Hopf operad is defined on the vector spaces spanned by forests of leaf-labeled, rooted, binary trees. An explicit formula for the coproduct and its dual product is given, using a poset on forests.
Description of cocommutative Hopf algebras associated with families of trees. Applications include Cayley's theorem on the number of rooted trees with n nodes, and Catalan's theorem on the number of rooted ordered trees with n nodes.
We use a coproduct on the time-ordered algebra of field operators to derive simple relations between complete, connected and 1-particle irreducible n-point functions. Compared to traditional functional methods our approach is much more intrinsic and leads to efficient algorithms suitable for concrete computations. It may also be used to efficiently perform tree level computations.
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\bQ$-algebra and $W$ any non-empty subset of $\bN^+$. Let $z=(z_1, ..., z_n)$ be commutative or noncommutative free variables and $t$ a formal central parameter. % Denote uniformly by $\kzz$ and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebras % of $z$ over $K$ and $K[[t]]$, respectively. Let $\cDazz$ $(α\geq 1)$ be the unital algebra generated by the differential operators of $\kzz$ which increase the degree in $z$ by at least $α-1$ and $ \ataz $ the group of automorphisms $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $o(H_t(z))\geq α$ and $H_{t=0}(z)=0$. First, we study a co…
These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric function…
Typed decorated trees are used by Bruned, Hairer and Zambotti to give a description of a renormalisation processon stochastic PDEs. We here study the algebraic structures on these objects: multiple prelie algebrasand related operads (generalizing a result by Chapoton and Livernet), noncommutative and cocommutative Hopf algebras (generalizing Grossman and Larson's construction),commutative and noncocommutative Hopf algebras (generalizing Connes and Kreimer's construction),bialgebras in cointeraction (generalizing Calaque, Ebrahimi-Fard and Manchon's result). We also define families of morphisms…
The vector space spanned by rooted forests admits two graded bialgebra structures. The first is defined by A. Connes and D. Kreimer using admissible cuts, and the second is defined by D. Calaque, K. Ebrahimi-Fard and the second author using contraction of trees. In this article we define the doubling of these two spaces. We construct two bialgebra structures on these spaces which are in interaction, as well as two related associative products obtained by dualization. We also show that these two bialgebras verify a commutative diagram similar to the diagram verified D. Calaque, K. Ebrahimi-Fard…
Based on Hopf algebra of rooted trees introduced by Connes and Kreimer, we construct a class of linear maps on noncommutative polynomial algebra in two indeterminates, namely rooted tree maps. We also prove that their maps induce a class of relations among multiple zeta values.
Binary rooted trees, both in the ordered and in the un-ordered case, are well studied structures in the field of combinatorics. The aim of this work is to study particular patterns in these classes of trees. We consider completely unbalanced subtrees, where unbalancing is measured according to the so-called Colless's index. The size of the biggest unbalanced subtree becomes then a new parameter with respect to which we find several enumerations.
We define two coproducts for cycle-free oriented graphs, thus building up two commutative con- nected graded Hopf algebras, such that one is a comodule-coalgebra on the other, thus generalizing the result obtained previously for Hopf algebras of rooted trees.
We define an analog of Plancherel measure for the set of rooted unlabeled trees on n vertices, and a Markov chain which has this measure as its stationary distribution. Using the combinatorics of commutation relations, we show that order n^2 steps are necessary and suffice for convergence to the stationary distribution.
Starting from an operad, one can build a family of posets. From this family of posets, one can define an incidence Hopf algebra. By another construction, one can also build a group directly from the operad. We then consider its Hopf algebra of functions. We prove that there exists a surjective morphism from the latter Hopf algebra to the former one. This is illustrated by the case of an operad built on rooted trees, the $\NAP$ operad, where the incidence Hopf algebra is identified with the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees.
We consider graded representations of the algebra NC of noncommutative symmetric functions on the Z-linear span of a graded poset P. The matrix coefficients of such a representation give a Hopf morphism from a Hopf algebra HP generated by the intervals of P to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This provides a unified construction of quasi-symmetric generating functions from different branches of algebraic combinatorics, and this construction is useful for transferring techniques and ideas between these branches. In particular we show that the (Hopf) algebra of Billera and Liu rela…
Rooted tree maps assign to an element of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees a linear map on the noncommutative polynomial algebra in two letters. Evaluated at any admissible word these maps induce linear relations between multiple zeta values. In this note we show that the derivation relations for multiple zeta values are contained in this class of linear relations.
The aim of this paper is to further explore an idea from J.-L. Loday briefly exposed in [5]. We impose a natural and simple symmetry on a unit action over the most general quadratic relation which can be written. This leads us to two families of binary, quadratic and regular operads whose free objects, as well as their duals in the sense of Ginzburg and Kapranov are computed. Roughly speaking, free objects found here are in relation to $m$-ary trees, triangular numbers and more generally $m$-tetrahedral numbers, homogeneous polynomials on $m$ commutative indeterminates over a field $K$ and pol…
We use orientations on stable graphs to express the combinatorial structure of the compactified universal Jacobians in degrees g-1 and g over the moduli space of stable curves, \Mgb, and construct for them graded stratifications compatible with the one of \Mgb. In particular, for a stable curve we exhibit graded stratifications of the compactified Jacobians in terms of totally cyclic, respectively rooted, orientations on subgraphs of its dual graph.
The main ideas developed in this habilitation thesis consist in endowing combinatorial objects (words, permutations, trees, Young tableaux, etc.) with operations in order to construct algebraic structures. This process allows, by studying algebraically the structures thus obtained (changes of bases, generating sets, presentations, morphisms, representations), to collect combinatorial information about the underlying objects. The algebraic structures the most encountered here are magmas, posets, associative algebras, dendriform algebras, Hopf bialgebras, operads, and pros. This work explores th…
The multiplihedra {M_n} form a family of polytopes originating in the study of higher categories and homotopy theory. While the multiplihedra may be unfamiliar to the algebraic combinatorics community, it is nestled between two families of polytopes that certainly are not: the permutahedra {S_n} and associahedra {Y_n}. The maps between these families reveal several new Hopf structures on tree-like objects nestled between the Malvenuto-Reutenauer (MR) Hopf algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco (LR) Hopf algebra of planar binary trees. We begin their study here, constructing a module over …
Recently, inspired by the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees, the second named author introduced rooted tree maps as a family of linear maps on the noncommutative polynomial algebra in two letters. These give a class of relations among multiple zeta values, which are known to be a subclass of the so-called linear part of the Kawashima relations. In this paper we show the opposite implication, that is the linear part of the Kawashima relations is implied by the relations coming from rooted tree maps.
We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees. Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set partitions, planar binary trees and rooted forests are discussed. Finally, we introduce one-parameter families interpolating between different structu…
Let $\CRF_S$ denote the category of $S$-colored rooted forests, and $\H_{\CRF_S}$ denote its Ringel-Hall algebra as introduced in \cite{KS}. We construct a homomorphism from a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions to $\H_{\CRF_S}$. Dualizing, we obtain a homomorphism from the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra to a $K^+_0 (\CRF_S)$--graded version of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. This homomorphism is a refinement of one considered by W. Zhao in \cite{Z}.
In this work a combinatorial description is provided of a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra which naturally appears in the context of Fliess operators in nonlinear feedback control theory. It is a connected graded commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebra defined on rooted circle trees. A cancellation free forest formula for its antipode is given.
It was recently shown that the renormalization of quantum field theory is organized by the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted trees, whose coproduct identifies the divergences requiring subtraction and whose antipode achieves this. We automate this process in a few lines of recursive symbolic code, which deliver a finite renormalized expression for any Feynman diagram. We thus verify a representation of the operator product expansion, which generalizes Chen's lemma for iterated integrals. The subset of diagrams whose forest structure entails a unique primitive subdivergence provides a representa…
This tutorial is intended to give an accessible introduction to Hopf algebras. The mathematical context is that of representation theory, and we also illustrate the structures with examples taken from combinatorics and quantum physics, showing that in this latter case the axioms of Hopf algebra arise naturally. The text contains many exercises, some taken from physics, aimed at expanding and exemplifying the concepts introduced.

We present a bijection from planar reduced trees to planar rooted hypertrees, which extends Knuth's rotation correspondence between planar binary trees and planar rooted trees. The operadic counterpart of the new bijection is explained. Related to this, the space of planar reduced forests is endowed with a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure. The corresponding structure on the space of planar rooted hyperforests is also described.
The aim of this paper is to bring together the three objects in the title. Recall that, given a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the Eulerian idempotent is a canonical projection from the enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{g})$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff product and the Magnus expansion can both be expressed in terms of the Eulerian idempotent, which makes it interesting to establish explicit formulas for the latter. We show how to reduce the computation of the Eulerian idempotent to the computation of a logarithm in a certain pre-Lie algebra of planar, binary, rooted trees. The p…
A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses …
Bell polynomials appear in several combinatorial constructions throughout mathematics. Perhaps most naturally in the combinatorics of set partitions, but also when studying compositions of diffeomorphisms on vector spaces and manifolds, and in the study of cumulants and moments in probability theory. We construct commutative and noncommutative Bell polynomials and explain how they give rise to Faà di Bruno Hopf algebras. We use the language of incidence Hopf algebras, and along the way provide a new description of antipodes in noncommutative incidence Hopf algebras, involving quasideterminants…
The combinatorial Hopf algebra on building sets $BSet$ extends the chromatic Hopf algebra of simple graphs. The image of a building set under canonical morphism to quasi-symmetric functions is the chromatic symmetric function of the corresponding hypergraph. By passing from graphs to building sets, we construct a sequence of symmetric functions associated to a graph. From the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations for the Hopf algebra $BSet$, we define a class of building sets called eulerian and show that eulerian building sets satisfy Bayer-Billera relations. We show the existence of the $\m…
Partial multivariate Bell polynomials have been defined by E.T. Bell in 1934. These polynomials have numerous applications in Combinatorics, Analysis, Algebra, Probabilities, etc. Many of the formulae on Bell polynomials involve combinatorial objects (set partitions, set partitions in lists, permutations, etc.). So it seems natural to investigate analogous formulae in some combinatorial Hopf algebras with bases indexed by these objects. The algebra of symmetric functions is the most famous example of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In a first time, we show that most of the results on Bell polyno…
We describe various combinatorial aspects of the Birkhoff-Connes-Kreimer factorization in perturbative renormalisation. The analog of Bogoliubov's preparation map on the Lie algebra of Feynman graphs is identified with the pre-Lie Magnus expansion. Our results apply to any connected filtered Hopf algebra, based on the pro-nilpotency of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters.
We define in this paper several Hopf algebras describing the combinatorics of the so-called multi-scale renormalization in quantum field theory. After a brief recall of the main mathematical features of multi-scale renormalization, we define assigned graphs, that are graphs with appropriate decorations for the multi-scale framework. We then define Hopf algebras on these assigned graphs and on the Gallavotti-Nicolò trees, particular class of trees encoding the supplementary informations of the assigned graphs. Several morphisms between these combinatorial Hopf algebras and the Connes-Kreimer al…
A non-commutative, planar, Hopf algebra of rooted trees was proposed in L. Foissy, Bull. Sci. Math. 126 (2002) 193-239. In this paper we propose such a non-commutative Hopf algebra for graphs. In order to define a non-commutative product we use a quantum field theoretical (QFT) idea, namely the one of introducing discrete scales on each edge of the graph (which, within the QFT framework, corresponds to energy scales of the associated propagators).
The operation of squaring (coproduct followed by product) in a combinatorial Hopf algebra is shown to induce a Markov chain in natural bases. Chains constructed in this way include widely studied methods of card shuffling, a natural "rock-breaking" process, and Markov chains on simplicial complexes. Many of these chains can be explictly diagonalized using the primitive elements of the algebra and the combinatorics of the free Lie algebra. For card shuffling, this gives an explicit description of the eigenvectors. For rock-breaking, an explicit description of the quasi-stationary distribution a…
