Finite-dimensional representations of the proper orthochronous Lorentz group are studied in terms of spinor representations of the Clifford algebras. The Clifford algebras are understood as an `algebraic covering' of a full system of the finite-dimensional representations of the Lorentz group. Space-time discrete symmetries P, T and PT, represented by fundamental automorphisms of the Clifford algebras, are defined on all the representation spaces. Real, complex, quaternionic and octonionic representations of the Lorentz group are considered. Physical fields of the different types are formulated within such representations. The Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro periodicity is defined on the Lorentz group. It is shown that modulo 2 and modulo 8 periodicities of the Clifford algebras allow to take a new look at the de Broglie-Jordan neutrino theory of light and the Gell-Mann-Ne'emann eightfold way in particle physics. On the representation spaces the charge conjugation C is represented by a pseudoautomorphism of the complex Clifford algebra. Quotient representations of the Lorentz group are introduced. It is shown that quotient representations are the most suitable for description of the massless physical fields. By way of example, neutrino field is described via the simplest quotient representation. Weyl-Hestenes equations for neutrino field are given.
A group theoretical description of basic discrete symmetries (space inversion P, time reversal T and charge conjugation C) is given. Discrete subgroups of orthogonal groups of multidimensional spaces over the fields of real and complex numbers are considered in terms of fundamental automorphisms of Clifford algebras. In accordance with a division ring structure, a complete classification of automorphism groups is established for the Clifford algebras over the fields of real and complex numbers. Finite-dimensional representations of the proper orthochronous Lorentz group are studied in terms of…
We give a one dimensional octonionic representation of the different Clifford algebra $Cliff(5,5)\sim Cliff(1,9), Cliff(6,6)\sim Cliff(2,10)$ and lastly $Cliff(7,6)\sim Cliff(3,10)$.
Isotopic liftings of algebraic structures are investigated in the context of Clifford algebras, where it is defined a new product involving an arbitrary, but fixed, element of the Clifford algebra. This element acts as the unit with respect to the introduced product, and is called isounit. We construct isotopies in both associative and non-associative arbitrary algebras, and examples of these constructions are exhibited using Clifford algebras, which although associative, can generate the octonionic, non-associative, algebra. The whole formalism is developed in a Clifford algebraic arena, givi…
The Clifford algebra of a n-dimensional Euclidean vector space provides a general language comprising vectors, complex numbers, quaternions, Grassman algebra, Pauli and Dirac matrices. In this work, we present an introduction to the main ideas of Clifford algebra, with the main goal to develop a package for Clifford algebra calculations for the computer algebra program Mathematica. The Clifford algebra package is thus a powerful tool since it allows the manipulation of all Clifford mathematical objects. The package also provides a visualization tool for elements of Clifford Algebra in the 3-di…
For the complex Clifford algebra Cl(p,q) of dimension n=p+q we define a Hermitian scalar product. This scalar product depends on the signature (p,q) of Clifford algebra. So, we arrive at unitary spaces on Clifford algebras. With the aid of Hermitian idempotents we suggest a new construction of, so called, normal matrix representations of Clifford algebra elements. These representations take into account the structure of unitary space on Clifford algebra.
In this paper we further develop the method of quaternion typification of Clifford algebra elements suggested by the author in the previous paper. On the basis of new classification of Clifford algebra elements it is possible to reveal and prove a number of new properties of Clifford algebra. We use k-fold commutators and anticommutators. In this paper we consider Clifford and exterior degrees and elementary functions of Clifford algebra elements.
We investigate the construction and properties of Clifford algebras by a similar manner as our previous construction of the octonions, namely as a twisting of group algebras of Z_2^n by a cocycle. Our approach is more general than the usual one based on generators and relations. We obtain in particular the periodicity properties and a new construction of spinors in terms of left and right multiplication in the Clifford algebra.
In this paper we construct the quantum Virasoro algebra ${\mathcal{L}}_{c}$ generators in terms of operators of the generalized Clifford algebras $C_{n}^{k}$. Precisely, we show that ${\mathcal{L}}_{c}$ can be embedded into generalized Clifford algebras.
Considering tensor products of special commutative algebras and general real Clifford algebras, we arrive at extended Clifford algebras. We have found that there are five types of extended Clifford algebras. The class of extended Clifford algebras is closed with respect to the tensor product.
CLIFFORD performs various computations in Grassmann and Clifford algebras. It can compute with quaternions, octonions, and matrices with entries in Cl(B) - the Clifford algebra of a vector space V endowed with an arbitrary bilinear form B. Two user-selectable algorithms for Clifford product are implemented: 'cmulNUM' - based on Chevalley's recursive formula, and 'cmulRS' - based on non-recursive Rota-Stein sausage. Grassmann and Clifford bases can be used. Properties of reversion in undotted and dotted wedge bases are discussed.
In this paper we further develop the method of quaternion typification of Clifford algebra elements suggested by the author in the previous papers. On the basis of new classification of Clifford algebra elements it is possible to find out and prove a number of new properties of Clifford algebra. In particular, we find subalgebras and Lie subalgebras of Clifford algebra and subalgebras of the Lie algebra of the pseudo-unitary Lie group.
In this paper we consider different operators acting on Clifford algebras. We consider Reynolds operator of Salingaros' vee group. This operator average" an action of Salingaros' vee group on Clifford algebra. We consider conjugate action on Clifford algebra. We present a relation between these operators and projection operators onto fixed subspaces of Clifford algebras. Using method of averaging we present solutions of system of commutator equations.
Real Clifford algebras for arbitrary number of space and time dimensions as well as their representations in terms of spinors are reviewed and discussed. The Clifford algebras are classified in terms of isomorphic matrix algebras of real, complex or quaternionic type. Spinors are defined as elements of minimal or quasi-minimal left ideals within the Clifford algebra and as representations of the pin and spin groups. Two types of Dirac adjoint spinors are introduced carefully. The relation between mathematical structures and applications to describe relativistic fermions is emphasized throughou…
We present a new classification of Clifford algebra elements. Our classification is based on the notion of quaternion type. Using this classification we develop a method for analyzing of commutators and anticommutators of Clifford algebra elements. This method allows us to find out and prove a number of new properties of Clifford algebra elements.
The Minkowski spacetime quantum Clifford algebra structure associated with the conformal group and the Clifford-Hopf alternative k-deformed quantum Poincare algebra is investigated in the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro mod 8 theorem context. The resulting algebra is equivalent to the deformed anti-de Sitter algebra U_q(so(3,2)), when the associated Clifford-Hopf algebra is taken into account, together with the associated quantum Clifford algebra and a (not braided) deformation of the periodicity Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro theorem.
In this paper we present new formulas, which represent commutators and anticommutators of Clifford algebra elements as sums of elements of different ranks. Using these formulas we consider subalgebras of Lie algebras of pseudounitary groups. Our main techniques are Clifford algebras. We have find 12 types of subalgebras of Lie algebras of pseudounitary groups.
An Adinkra is a graph from the study of supersymmetry in particle physics, but it can be adapted to study Clifford algebra representations. The graph in this context is called a Cliffordinkra, and puts some standard ideas in Clifford algebra representations in a geometric and visual context. In the past few years there have been developments in Adinkras that have shown how they are connected to error correcting codes, algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. These connections also arise for Cliffordinkras. This paper introduces Cliffordinkras and describes the relationship to…
We present different methods for symbolic computer algebra computations in higher dimensional (\ge9) Clifford algebras using the \Clifford\ and \Bigebra\ packages for \Maple(R). This is achieved using graded tensor decompositions, periodicity theorems and matrix spinor representations over Clifford numbers. We show how to code the graded algebra isomorphisms and the main involutions, and we provide some benchmarks.
We show how the matrix algebra notions of determinant, spectrum, and Hermitian conjugation transfer to the Clifford algebra and to differential forms on parallelisable manifolds.
The classification of real Clifford algebras in terms of matrix algebras is well--known. Here we consider the real Clifford algebra ${\mathcal Cl}(r,s)$ not as a matrix algebra, but as a Clifford module over itself. We show that ${\mathcal Cl}(r,s)$ possesses a basis independent complex structure only when the square of the volume element $ω$ is -1, in which case it is uniquely given up to sign by right multiplication with $ω$.
Here I present a full list with all possibles products between the generators of the Clifford algebra in a four-dimensional spacetime. The resulting expressions turned out to be very simple and easy to deal with.
In our paper we consider the notion of determinant of Clifford algebra elements. We present some new formulas for determinant of Clifford algebra elements for the cases of dimension 4 and 5. Also we consider the notion of trace of Clifford algebra elements. We use the generalization of the Pauli's theorem for 2 sets of elements that satisfy the main anticommutation conditions of Clifford algebra.
We consider Clifford algebras over the field of real or complex numbers as a quotient algebra without fixed basis. We present classification of Clifford algebra elements based on the notion of quaternion type. This classification allows us to reveal and prove a number of new properties of Clifford algebras. We rely on the operations of conjugation to introduce the notion of quaternion type. Also we find relations between the concepts of quaternion type and rank of Clifford algebra element.
A classification of idempotents in Clifford algebras C(p,q) is presented. It is shown that using isomorphisms between Clifford algebras C(p,q) and appropriate matrix rings, it is possible to classify idempotents in any Clifford algebra into continuous families. These families include primitive idempotents used to generate minimal one sided ideals in Clifford algebras. Some low dimensional examples are discussed.
Here is discussed generalization of Clifford algebras, l^n-dimensional Weyl-Clifford algebras T(n,l) with n generators t_k satisfying equation $(\sum_{k=1}^n a_k t_k)^l = \sum_{k=1}^n a_k^l$. It is originated from two basic and well known constructions: representation of Clifford algebras via tensor products of Pauli matrices together with extension for l > 2 using Weyl commutation relations. Presentation of such general topics here may not pretend to entire originality or completeness and it is rather a preliminary excursus into this very broad and interesting area of research.
The representations of Clifford algebras and their involutions and anti-involutions are fully investigated since decades. However, these representations do sometimes not comply with usual conventions within physics. A few simple examples are presented, which point out that the hyperbolic numbers can close this gap.
One particular approach to quantum groups (matrix pseudo groups) provides the Manin quantum plane. Assuming an appropriate set of non-commuting variables spanning linearly a representation space one is able to show that the endomorphisms on that space preserving the non-commutative structure constitute a quantum group. The non-commutativity of these variables provide an example of non-commutative geometry. In some recent work we have shown that quantum Clifford algebras --i.e. Clifford algebras of an arbitrary bilinear form-- are closely related to deformed structures as q-spin groups, Hecke a…
In this paper we address the problem of constructing a class of representations of Clifford algebras that can be named "alphabetic (re)presentations". The Clifford algebras generators are expressed as m-letter words written with a 3-character or a 4-character alphabet. We formulate the problem of the alphabetic presentations, deriving the main properties and some general results. At the end we briefly discuss the motivations of this work and outline some possible applications.
This is a short review of the algebraic properties of Clifford algebras and spinors. Their use in the description of fundamental physics (elementary particles) is also summarized. Lecture given at the ICCA7 conference, Toulouse (23/05/2005)
In these lectures, we discuss some well-known facts about Clifford algebras: matrix representations, Cartan's periodicity of 8, double coverings of orthogonal groups by spin groups, Dirac equation in different formalisms, spinors in $n$ dimensions, etc. We also present our point of view on some problems. Namely, we discuss the generalization of the Pauli theorem, the basic ideas of the method of averaging in Clifford algebras, the notion of quaternion type of Clifford algebra elements, the classification of Lie subalgebras of specific type in Clifford algebra, etc.
We present, as a proof of concept, a way to parallelize the Clifford product in CL_{p,q} for a diagonalized quadratic form as a new procedure `cmulWpar' in the \Clifford package for \Maple(R). The procedure uses a new `Threads' module available under Maple 15 (and later) and a new \Clifford procedure `cmulW' which computes the Clifford product of any two Grassmann monomials in \CL_{p,q} with a help of Walsh functions. We benchmark `cmulWpar' and compare it to two other procedures `cmulNUM' and `cmulRS' from \Clifford. We comment on how to improve `cmulWpar' by taking advantage of multi-core pr…
We give an algebraic formulation based on Clifford algebras and algebraic spinors for quantum information. In this context, logic gates and concepts such as chirality, charge conjugation, parity and time reversal are introduced and explored in connection with states of qubits. Supersymmetry and M-superalgebra are also analysed with our formalism. Specifically we use extensively the algebras $Cl_{3,0}$ and $Cl_{1,3}$ as well as tensor products of Clifford algebras.
The stabilized Poincare-Heisenberg algebra (SPHA) is the Lie algebra of quantum relativistic kinematics generated by fifteen generators. It is obtained from imposing stability conditions after attempting to combine the Lie algebras of quantum mechanics and relativity which by themselves are stable, however not when combined. In this paper we show how the sixteen dimensional Clifford algebra CL(1,3) can be used to generate the SPHA. The Clifford algebra path to the SPHA avoids the traditional stability considerations, relying instead on the fact that CL(1,3) is a semi-simple algebra and therefo…
This paper presents equations for the inverse of a Clifford number in Clifford algebras of up to five dimensions. In presenting these, there are also presented formulas for the determinant and adjugate of a general Clifford number of up to five dimensions, matching the determinant and adjugate of the matrix representations of the algebra. These equations are independent of the metric used.
We formulate a Boolean algebra in the set of idempotents of Clifford algebra Cl($R^{n,n}$) and within this frame we examine different formulations of the Boolean Satisfiability Problem in Clifford algebra. Exploiting the isomorphism between null subspaces of $R^{n,n}$ associated to simple spinors and the orthogonal group O(n) we ultimately give a continuous formulation of the Boolean Satisfiability Problem within this group that opens unexplored perspectives.
In this paper we give a thoughtful exposition of the hyperbolic Clifford algebra of multivecfors which is naturally associated with a hyperbolic space, whose elements are called vecfors. Geometrical interpretation of vecfors and multivecfors are given. Poincare automorphism (Hodge dual operator) is introduced and several useful formulas derived. The role of a particular ideal in the hyperbolic Clifford algebra whose elements are representatives of spinors and resume the algebraic properties of Witten superfields is discussed.
We use isomorphism $φ$ between matrix algebras and simple orthogonal Clifford algebras $\cl(Q)$ to compute matrix exponential ${e}^{A}$ of a real, complex, and quaternionic matrix A. The isomorphic image $p=φ(A)$ in $\cl(Q),$ where the quadratic form $Q$ has a suitable signature $(p,q),$ is exponentiated modulo a minimal polynomial of $p$ using Clifford exponential. Elements of $\cl(Q)$ are treated as symbolic multivariate polynomials in Grassmann monomials. Computations in $\cl(Q)$ are performed with a Maple package `CLIFFORD'. Three examples of matrix exponentiation are given.
The necessary appearance of Clifford algebras in the quantum description of fermions has prompted us to re-examine the fundamental role played by the quaternion Clifford algebra, C(0,2). This algebra is essentially the geometric algebra describing the rotational properties of space. Hidden within this algebra are symplectic structures with Heisenberg algebras at their core. This algebra also enables us to define a Poisson algebra of all homogeneous quadratic polynomials on a two-dimensional sub-space, Fa of the Euclidean three-space. This enables us to construct a Poisson Clifford algebra, H(F…
After a brief discussion of the computational complexity of Clifford algebras, we present a new basis for even Clifford algebra Cl(2m) that simplifies greatly the actual calculations and, without resorting to the conventional matrix isomorphism formulation, obtains the same complexity. In the last part we apply these results to the Clifford algebra formulation of the NP-complete problem of the maximum clique of a graph introduced in a previous paper.
We show that complex representations of Clifford algebra can always be reduced either to a real or to a quaternionic algebra depending on signature of complex space thus showing that complex spinors are unavoidably either real Majorana spinors or quaternionic spinors. We use this result to support (1,3) signature for Minkowski space.
The Clifford algebraic formulation of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) algebras is applied to recast the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian (DWH) theory as an algebraic description independent of the matrix representation of the DKP algebra. We show that the DWH equations for antisymmetric fields arise out of the action of the DKP algebra on certain invariant subspaces of the Clifford algebra which carry the representations of the fields. The matrix representation-free formula for the bracket associated with the DKP form of the DWH equations is also derived. This bracket satisfies a generalization of th…
Let Cl1(1,3) and Cl2(1,3) be the subsets of elements of the Clifford algebra Cl(1,3) of ranks 1 and 2 respectively. Recently it was proved that the subset Cl2(p,q)+iCl1(p,q) of the complex Clifford algebra can be considered as a Lie algebra. In this paper we prove that for p=1, q=3 the Lie algebra Cl2(p,q)+iCl1(p,q) is isomorphic to the well known matrix Lie algebra sp(4,R) of the symplectic Lie group Sp(4,R). Also we define the so called symplectic group of Clifford algebra and prove that this Lie group is isomprphic to the symplectic matrix group Sp(4,R).
This paper is the third of a series of three, and it is the continuation of math-ph/0412074 and math-ph/0412075. After reviewing the conformal spacetime structure, conformal maps are described in Minkowski spacetime as the twisted adjoint representation of the group Spin_+(2,4), acting on paravectors. Twistors are then presented via the paravector model of Clifford algebras and related to conformal maps in the Clifford algebra over the lorentzian R{4,1}$ spacetime. We construct twistors in Minkowski spacetime as algebraic spinors associated with the Dirac-Clifford algebra Cl(1,3)(C) using one …
The Dunkl--Dirac symmetry algebra is an associative subalgebra of the tensor product of a Clifford algebra and the faithful polynomial representation of a rational Cherednik algebra. In previous work, the finite-dimensional representations of the Dunkl--Dirac symmetry algebra in three dimensions linked with a dihedral group were given. We give here the necessary results to proceed to the same construction when the Clifford algebra in the tensor product has negative signature.
These are lecture notes for a course on the theory of Clifford algebras, with special emphasis on their wide range of applications in mathematics and physics. Clifford algebra is introduced both through a conventional tensor algebra construction (then called geometric algebra) with geometric applications in mind, as well as in an algebraically more general form which is well suited for combinatorics, and for defining and understanding the numerous products and operations of the algebra. The various applications presented include vector space and projective geometry, orthogonal maps and spinors…
We deduce from a determinant identity on quantum transfer matrices of generalized quantum integrable spin chain model their generating functions. We construct the isomorphism of Clifford algebra modules of sequences of transfer matrices and the boson space of symmetric functions. As an application, tau-functions of transfer matrices immediately arise from classical tau-functions of symmetric functions.
We investigate the properties of the Extended Fock Basis (EFB) of Clifford algebras introduced in [1]. We show that a Clifford algebra can be seen as a direct sum of multiple spinor subspaces that are characterized as being left eigenvectors of Γ. We also show that a simple spinor, expressed in Fock basis, can have a maximum number of non zero coordinates that equals the size of the maximal totally null plane (with the notable exception of vectorial spaces with 6 dimensions).
This paper is intended to investigate Grassmann and Clifford algebras over Peano spaces, introducing their respective associated extended algebras, and to explore these concepts also from the counterspace viewpoint. The exterior (regressive) algebra is shown to share the exterior (progressive) algebra in the direct sum of chiral and achiral subspaces. The duality between scalars and volume elements, respectively under the progressive and the regressive products is shown to have chirality, in the case when the dimension n of the Peano space is even. In other words, the counterspace volume eleme…
A set of valuable universal similarity factorization equalities are established over complex Clifford algebras $\Cn.$ Through them matrix representations of complex Clifford algebras $\Cn$ can directly be derived, and their properties can easily be determined.
A variety of universal similarity factorization equalities over real Clifford algebras ${\cal R}_{p,q}$ are established. On the basis of these equalities, real, complex and quaternion matrix representations of elements in ${\cal R}_{p,q}$ can be explicitly determined.
