We study an optimal control problem with a quadratic cost functional for non-Newtonian fluids of differential type.
More precisely, we consider the system governing the evolution of a second grade fluid filling a two-dimensional bounded domain, supplemented with a Navier slip boundary condition, and under certain assumptions on the size of the initial data and parameters of the model, we prove the second-order sufficient optimality conditions.
Furthermore, we establish a global uniqueness result for the solutions of the first-order optimality system.
In this paper we study the equations governing the unsteady motion of an incompressible homogeneous generalized second grade fluid subject to periodic boundary conditions. We establish the existence of global-in-time strong solutions for shear thickening flows in the two and three dimensional case. We also prove uniqueness of such solution without any smallness condition on the initial data or restriction on the material moduli.
This paper deals with the controllability of the second grade fluids, a class of non-Newtonian of differentiel type, on a two-dimensional torus. Using the method of Agrachev-Sarychev [1], [2] and of Sirikyan [26], we prove that the system of second grade fluids is approximately controllable by a finite-dimensional control force.
The aim of this work is to study the optimal control problems of flows governed by the incompressible third grade fluid equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions. After recalling a result on the well-posedness of the state equations, we study the existence and the uniqueness of solution to the linearized state and adjoint equations. Furthermore, we present a stability result for the state, and show that the solution of the linearized equation coincides with the Gâteaux derivative of the control-to-state mapping. Next, we prove the existence of an optimal solution and establish the first o…
In the paper, the limit behavior of solutions to the second-grade fluid system with no-slip boundary conditions is studied as both $ν$ and $α$ tend to zero. More precisely, it is verified that the convergence from second-grade fluid system to Euler system holds as $ν$ and $α$ tend to zero independently under the radial symmetry case.
In the present paper, we study the long time behaviour of the solutions of the second grade fluids equations in dimension 3. Using scaling variables and energy estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces, we describe the first order asymptotic profiles of these solutions. In particular, we show that the solutions of the second grade fluids equations converge to self-similar solutions of the heat equations, which are explicit and depend on the initial data. Since this phenomenon occurs also for the Navier-Stokes equations, it shows that the fluids of second grade behave asymptotically like Newtonian f…
We study the long time behaviour of the solutions of the third grade fluids equations in dimension 2. Introducing scaled variables and performing several energy estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces, we describe the first order of an asymptotic expansion of these solutions. It shows in particular that, under smallness assumptions on the data, the solutions of the third grade fluids equations converge to self-similar solutions of the heat equations, which can be computed explicitly from the data.
We study the limit of the stochastic model for two dimensional second grade fluids subjected to the periodic boundary conditions as the stress modulus tends to zero. We show that under suitable conditions on the data the whole sequence of strong probabilistic solutions $(u^α)$ of the stochastic second grade fluid converges to the unique strong probabilistic solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations.
We present a very simple proof of the global existence of a $C^\infty$ Lagrangian flow map for the 2D Euler and second-grade fluid equations (on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary) which has $C^\infty$ dependence on initial data $u_0$ in the class of $H^s$ divergence-free vector fields for $s>2$.
The theory of turbulent Newtonian fluids turns out that the choice of the boundary condition is a relevant issue, since it can modify the behavior of the fluid by creating or avoiding a strong boundary layer. In this work we study stochastic second grade fluids filling a two-dimensional bounded domain, with the Navier-slip boundary condition (with friction). We prove the well-posedness of this problem and establish a stability result. Our stochastic model involves a multiplicative white noise and a convective term with third order derivatives, which significantly complicate the analysis.
We extend the weak-strong uniqueness principle to general models of compressible viscous fluids near/on the vacuum. In particular, the physically relevant case of positive density with polynomial decay at infinity is considered.
We address the global persistence of analyticity and Gevrey-class regularity of solutions to the two and three-dimensional visco-elastic second-grade fluid equations. We obtain an explicit novel lower bound on the radius of analyticity of the solutions to the second-grade fluid equations that does not vanish as $t\to \infty$. Applications to the damped Euler equations are given.
In this paper we consider the linearized version of a system of partial differential equations arising from a fluid-structure interaction model. We prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution under natural regularity assumptions.
This work is devoted to the study of a compressible viscoelastic fluids satisfying the Oldroyd-B model in a regular bounded domain. We prove the local existence of solutions and uniqueness of flows by a classical fixed point argument.
We prove some regularity results for a class of two dimensional non-Newtonian fluids. By applying results from [Dashti and Robinson, Nonlinearity, 22 (2009), 735-746] we can then show uniqueness of particle trajectories.
This paper concerns with the compressible two-fluid model with algebraic pressure closure. We prove a conditional weak-strong uniqueness principle, meaning that a finite energy weak solution, with bounded densities, coincides with the classical solution on the lifespan of the latter emanating from the same initial data.
We consider the limit $α\to0$ for a second grade fluid on a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show convergence towards a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations under two different types of hypothesis on the initial velocity $u_0$. If the product $\|u_0\|_{L^2}\|u_0\|_{H^1}$ is sufficiently small we prove global-in-time convergence. If there is no smallness assumption we obtain local-in-time convergence up to the time $C/\|u_0\|_{H^1}^4$.
This article deals with a stochastic control problem for certain fluids of non-Newtonian type. More precisely, the state equation is given by the two-dimensional stochastic second grade fluids perturbed by a multiplicative white noise. The control acts through an external stochastic force and we search for a control that minimizes a cost functional. We show that the Gâteaux derivative of the control to state map is a stochastic process being the unique solution of the stochastic linearized state equation. The well-posedness of the corresponding stochastic backward adjoint equation is also esta…
In Part II of the paper, we prove linear instability of a certain class of radially symmetric flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two used in Part I
Our paper deals with three-dimensional nonsteady Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian compressible fluids. It contains a~derivation of the relative energy inequality for the weak solutions to these equations. We show that the standard energy inequality implies the relative energy inequality. Consequently, the relative energy inequality allows us to achieve a weak-strong uniqueness result. In other words, we present that the weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system coincides with the strong solution emanated from the same initial conditions as long as the weak solution exists.
In Part I of the paper, we prove non-uniqueness of the solution to the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two with vorticity in some Lebesgue space. The radially symmetric external force is locally integrable with values in the same Lebesgue space.
Assuming certain forms of the stream function inverse solutions of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid for a porous medium channel in the presence of Hall currents are obtained. Expressions for streamlines, velocity components and pressure fields are described in each case and are compared with the known viscous and second-grade cases.
We consider a coupled PDE-ODE system describing the motion of the rigid body in a container filled with the incompressible, viscous fluid. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via Navier slip boundary condition. We prove that the local in time strong solution is unique in the larger class of weak solutions on the interval of its existence. This is the first weak-strong uniqueness result in the area of fluid-structure interaction with a moving boundary.
This paper is concerned with the application of finite element methods to obtain solutions for steady fully developed second-grade flows in a curved pipe of circular cross-section and arbitrary curvature ratio, under a given axial pressure gradient. The qualitative and quantitative behavior of the secondary flows is analyzed with respect to inertia and viscoelasticity.
In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between compressible viscous fluids and plates. For this problem, we introduce relative entropy and relative energy inequality for the finite energy weak solutions (FEWS). First, we prove that for all FEWS, the structure displacement enjoys improved regularity by utilizing the dissipation effects of the fluid onto the structure and that all FEWS satisfy the relative energy inequality. Then, we show that all FEWS enjoy the weak-strong uniqueness property, thus extending the classical result for compressible Navier-Stokes system to this flu…
We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
In this paper, we consider an inverse problem for three dimensional viscoelastic fluid flow equations, which arises from the motion of Kelvin-Voigt fluids in bounded domains (a hyperbolic type problem). This inverse problem aims to reconstruct the velocity and kernel of the memory term simultaneously, from the measurement described as the integral over determination condition. By using the contraction mapping principle in an appropriate space, a local in time existence and uniqueness result for the inverse problem of Kelvin-Voigt fluids are obtained. Furthermore, using similar arguments, a glo…
We study a system of parabolic equations consisting of a double nonlinear parabolic equations of Forchheimer type coupled with a semilinear parabolic equations. The system describes a fluid-like driven system for active-passive pedestrian dynamics. The structure of the nonlinearity of the coupling allows us to prove the uniqueness of solutions. We provide also stability estimates of solutions with respect to selected parameters.
In this work, we establish the so-called backward uniqiueness property for a coupled system of partial differential equations (PDEs) which governs a certain fluid-structure interaction. In particular, a three-dimensional Stokes flow interacts across a boundary interface with a two-dimensional mechanical plate equation. By way of attaining this result, a certain estimate is obtained for the associated semigroup generator resolvent.
Consider two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D in the isentropic approximation. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, the coupled dynamics of the two fluids results as the compressible to incompressible limit and is known to satisfy an ODE--PDE system. Below, a characterization of this limit is provided, ensuring its uniqueness.
The second-grade fluid equations are a model for viscoelastic fluids, with two parameters: $α> 0$, corresponding to the elastic response, and $ν> 0$, corresponding to viscosity. Formally setting these parameters to $0$ reduces the equations to the incompressible Euler equations of ideal fluid flow. In this article we study the limits $α, ν\to 0$ of solutions of the second-grade fluid system, in a smooth, bounded, two-dimensional domain with no-slip boundary conditions. This class of problems interpolates between the Euler-$α$ model ($ν= 0$), for which the authors recently proved convergence to…
We consider density dependent, non-Newtonian, incompressible system with the space being flat torus. The viscious stress in the momentum equation is understood through the rheological law and its connection to the proper convex potential. We define the dissipative measure-valued solutions for the aforementioned equations as well as provide a proof of its existence. The main result of this work is the mv-strong uniqueness of the defined solutions.
We give a survey of recent results on weak-strong uniqueness for compressible and incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, and also make some new observations. The importance of the weak-strong uniqueness principle stems, on the one hand, from the instances of non-uniqueness for the Euler equations exhibited in the past years; and on the other hand from the question of convergence of singular limits, for which weak-strong uniqueness represents an elegant tool.
In this paper, we extend our previous result from [16]. We prove that transport equations with rough coefficients do possess a uniqueness property. Our method relies strongly on duality and bears a strong resemblance with the well-known DiPerna-Lions theory first developed in [8]. As an application, we show a uniqueness result for the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations at the Leray regularity scale. In turn, this theorem stands as a barrier against the paradoxical weak solutions constructed in [17], [18], [19] and later reformulated in [6].
In this article, we study the solutions of the damped Navier--Stokes equation with Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary. The existence of the solutions is global with the damped term $\vartheta |u|^{β-1}u, \vartheta >0.$ The regularity and uniqueness of solutions with Navier boundary condition is also studied. This extends the existing results in literature.
We prove the uniqueness of Hölder continuous weak solutions via duality argument and vanishing viscosity method for the Keller-Segel system of porous medium type equations coupled to the Stokes system in dimensions three. An important step is the estimate of the Green function of parabolic equations with lower order terms of variable coefficients, which seems to be of independent interest.
We study a 3D nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem describing the interaction of the fluid flow with a rigid body. The fluid flow is governed by 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the motion of the rigid body is described by a system of ordinary differential equations called Euler equations for the rigid body. The equations are fully coupled via dynamical and kinematic coupling conditions. We consider two different kinds of kinematic coupling conditions: no-slip and slip. In both cases we prove a generalization of the well-known weak-strong uniqueness res…
This paper is concerned with an uniqueness of solution of the weak formulation of an evolution dam problem related to a compressible fluid flow through a two-dimensional, rectangular and heterogeneous porous medium. Note that our problem associated with the equation a(x_1)(u_{x_2}+χ)_{x_2}-(u+χ)_t=0. Our technique is based on the idea that we transform the weak form of this equation into a similar situation to the proof of the uniqueness in the incompressible case (see [12]). It is also difficult to adapt the proof obtained in [12] by using some properties of the solutions as in [12, Sect. 2].
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.
The aim of this work is to prove the weak-strong uniqueness principle for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system on an exterior domain, with an isentropic pressure of the type $p(\varrho)=a\varrho^γ$ and allowing the density to be close or equal to zero. In particular, the result will be first obtained for an adiabatic exponent $γ\in [9/5,2]$ and afterwards, this range will be slightly enlarged via pressure estimates "up to the boundary", deduced relaying on boundedness of a proper singular integral operator.
In this paper, we prove the local uniqueness of an inverse problem arising in the nonstationary flow of a nonhomogeneous incompressible asymmetric fluid in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. The direct problem is an initial-boundary value problem for a system for the velocity field, the angular velocity of rotation of the fluid particles, the mass density and the pressure distribution. The inverse problem consists in the external force recover assuming an integral measurements on the boundary. We characterize the inverse problem solutions using an operator equation of second kind, which is…
In two space dimensions, we study a general double-free-boundary problem which models a stream flowing through a gravitaional potentiay. ntial-energy terrain. The existence theorem generalizes (by a different proof) a result of A. Beurling. We study the uniqueness question kn two ways.
We study the convergence rate of the solutions of the incompressible Euler-$α$, an inviscid second-grade complex fluid, equations to the corresponding solutions of the Euler equations, as the regularization parameter $α$ approaches zero. First we show the convergence in $H^{s}$, $s>n/2+1$, in the whole space, and that the smooth Euler-$α$ solutions exist at least as long as the corresponding solution of the Euler equations. Next we estimate the convergence rate for two-dimensional vortex patch with smooth boundaries.
This article studies the solutions of a two-dimensional grade-two fluid model with a fully non-homogeneous boundary condition for velocity u. Compared to problems with a homogeneous or tangential boundary condition, studied by many authors , we must add a boundary condition, otherwise the problem is no longer well-posed. We propose two conditions on z = curl (u -- $α$$Δ$u), which differ according to the regularity of z, on the portion of $\partial$$Ω$ where $α$u. n \textless{} 0. Following the approach of V. Girault and L.R. Scott in the tangential boundary case, we split the problem into a sy…
We prove weak-strong uniqueness in the class of admissible measure-valued solutions for the isentropic Euler equations in any space dimension and for the Savage-Hutter model of granular flows in one and two space dimensions. For the latter system, we also show the complete dissipation of momentum in finite time, thus rigorously justifying an assumption that has been made in the engineering and numerical literature.

We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
We consider the flow of two viscous and incompressible fluids within a bounded domain modeled by means of a two-phase Navier-Stokes system. The two fluids are assumed to be immiscible, meaning that they are separated by an interface. With respect to the motion of the interface, we consider pure transport by the fluid flow. Along the boundary of the domain, a complete slip boundary condition for the fluid velocities and a constant ninety degree contact angle condition for the interface are assumed. The main result of the present work establishes in 2D a weak-strong uniqueness result in terms of…
In this paper we discuss the MHD flow of a second grade fluid, in particular we prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution of a time-dependent grade two fluid model in a two-dimensional Lipschitz domain. We follow the methodology of Girault and Saadouni (Ref.[3]), i.e , we use a constructive method which can be adapted to the numerical analysis of finite-element schemes for solving this problem numerically.
We study the flow of two immiscible fluids located on a solid bottom, where the lower fluid is Newtonian and the upper fluid is a non-Newtonian Ellis fluid. Neglecting gravitational effects, we consider the formal asymptotic limit of small film heights in the two-phase Navier--Stokes system. This leads to a strongly coupled system of two parabolic equations of fourth order with merely Hölder-continuous dependence on the coefficients. For the case of strictly positive initial film heights we prove local existence of strong solutions by abstract semigroup theory. Uniqueness is proved by energy m…
