This work is devoted to the study of a compressible viscoelastic fluids satisfying the Oldroyd-B model in a regular bounded domain. We prove the local existence of solutions and uniqueness of flows by a classical fixed point argument.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a compressible Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions. Under some smallness assumptions on the initial data, we obtain the global wellposedness of strong solution with uniform regularity. Moreover, we provide a rigorous justification for the link between the compressible model and the corresponding incompressible model via incompressible limits.
A compressible Oldroyd--B type model with stress diffusion is derived from a compressible Navier--Stokes--Fokker--Planck system arising in the kinetic theory of dilute polymeric fluids, where polymer chains immersed in a barotropic, compressible, isothermal, viscous Newtonian solvent, are idealized as pairs of massless beads connected with Hookean springs. We develop a-priori bounds for the model, including a logarithmic bound, which guarantee the nonnegativity of the elastic extra stress tensor, and we prove the existence of large data global-in-time finite-energy weak solutions in two space …
This paper is dedicated to the global well-posedness issue of the compressible Oldroyd-B model in the whole space $\R^d$ with $d\ge2$. It is shown that this set of equations admits a unique global solution in a certain critical Besov space provided the initial data, but not necessarily the coupling parameter, is small enough. This result extends the work by Fang and the author [{J. Differential Equations}, {256}(2014), 2559--2602] to the non-small coupling parameter case.
We consider the compressible Oldroyd-B model derived in \cite{Barrett-Lu-Suli}, where the existence of global-in-time finite energy weak solutions was shown in two dimensional setting. In this paper, we first state a local well-posedness result for this compressible Oldroyd-B model. In two dimensional setting, we give a (refined) blow-up criterion involving only the upper bound of the fluid density. We then show that, if the initial fluid density and polymer number density admit a positive lower bound, the weak solution coincides with the strong one as long as the latter exists. Moreover, if t…
The present paper deals with non Newtonian viscoelastic flows of Oldroyd-B tye in thin domains. Such geometries arise for example in the context of lubrication. More precisely, we justify rigorously the asymptotic model obtained heuristically by proving the mathematical convergence of the Navier-Stokes/Oldroyd-B sytem towards the asymptotic model.
The Cauchy problem of the compressible Oldroyd-B model without damping mechanism in R^n$ with $n\ge2$ is considered. The lack of dissipation in density and stress tensor in the model is compensated by exploiting an intrinsic structure and introducing new quantities between density, velocity and stress tensor. Therefore, global solutions to the system with small initial data in critical Besov spaces are obtained. As a byproduct, optimal time decay rates of the solutions are derived by using an energy estimation argument. The results remain valid for the compressible viscoelastic system without …
We start with the compressible Oldroyd--B model derived in \cite{Barrett-Lu-Suli} ({\em J. W. Barrett, Y. Lu, E. Süli. Existence of large-data finite-energy global weak solutions to a compressible Oldroyd--B model. Comm. Math. Sci. 15 (2017), 1265--1323}), where the existence of global-in-time finite-energy weak solutions was shown in two dimensional setting with stress diffusion. In the paper, we investigate the case without stress diffusion. We first restrict ourselves to the corotational setting as in \cite{LM00} ({\em P. L. Lions, N. Masmoudi. Global solutions for some Oldroyd models of no…
The purpose of this work is to study the global wellposedness and large time behavior results of strong solutions for the compressible Oldroyd-B model derived by Barrett, Lu, Süli (Commun. Math. Sci., 15, 1265--1323, 2017). Exploiting the Harmonic analysis tools (especially Littlewood-Paley theory), we first study the global well-posedness of the model with small initial data in spaces with low regularity. Then, under a suitable condition involving only the low frequency of the initial data, we also obtain the optimal decay rates of the solutions. Compared with the result by Wang and Wen (Math…

The initial value problem for a coupled system is studied. The system consists of a differential inclusion and a differential equation and models the fluid flow of a viscoelastic fluid of Oldroyd type. The set-valued right-hand side of the differential inclusion satisfies certain measurability, continuity and growth conditions. The local existence (and global existence for small data) of a strong solution to the coupled system is shown using a generalisation of Kakutani's fixed-point theorem and applying results from the single-valued case.
This paper is concerned with a mathematical model which describes 2-D flows of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid of Oldroyd type in a bounded domain. We prove the existence and uniqueness theorem for global (in time) weak solutions and derive the energy equation.
The formation of singularity and breakdown of classical solutions to the three-dimensional compressible viscoelasticity and inviscid elasticity are considered. For the compressible inviscid elastic fluids, the finite-time formation of singularity in classical solutions is proved for certain initial data. For the compressible viscoelastic fluids, a criterion in term of the temporal integral of the velocity gradient is obtained for the breakdown of smooth solutions.
The existence and uniqueness of the local strong solution to the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic fluids near the equilibrium is established. In addition to the uniform estimates on the velocity, some essential uniform estimates on the density and the deformation gradient are also obtained.
The existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solution with large initial data for the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic fluid is established. The strong solution has weaker regularity than the classical solution. The Lax-Milgram theorem and the Schauder-Tychonoff fixed-point argument are applied.
The global existence of strong solution to the initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic fluids near equilibrium is established in a bounded domain. Uniform estimates in $W^{1,q}$ with $q>3$ on the density and deformation gradient are also obtained. All the results apply to the two-dimensional case.
We study the generalized Oldroyd model with viscosity depending on the shear stress behaving like $μ(\mathbf{D}) \sim |\mathbf{D}|^{p-2}$ ($p>\frac 65$) regularized by a nonlinear stress diffusion. Using the Lipschitz truncation method we are able to prove global existence of weak solution to the corresponding system of partial differential equations.
In this paper, we prove the global existence of small smooth solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Oldroyd-B model without damping on the stress tensor. The main difficulty is the lack of full dissipation in stress tensor. To overcome it, we construct some time-weighted energies based on the special coupled structure of system. Such type energies show the partial dissipation of stress tensor and the strongly full dissipation of velocity. In the view of treating "nonlinear term" as a "linear term", we also apply this result to 3D incompressible viscoelastic system with Hookean elast…
We consider the system of equations describing motion of compressible viscoelastic fluids in a whole space. We investigate the large time behavior of solutions around a motionless state, and obtain the $L^p$ decay estimates of solutions for $1<p\leq\infty$, provided that the initial data is sufficiently close to the motionless state. In addition, we clarify the diffusion wave phenomena caused by the sound wave and the elastic shear wave.
We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.
We consider the free boundary problem of compressible isentropic neo-Hookean viscoelastic fluid equations with surface tension. Under the physical kinetic and dynamic conditions proposed on the free boundary, we investigate regularities of classical solutions to viscoelastic fluid equations in Sobolev spaces which are uniform in viscosity and justify the corresponding vanishing viscosity limits. The key ingredient of our proof is that the deformation gradient tensor in Lagrangian coordinates can be represented as a parameter in terms of flow map so that the inherent structure of the elastic te…
We study the blowup criterion of smooth solution to the Oldroyd models. Let $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ be a smooth solution in $[0,T)$, it is shown that the solution $(u(t,x), F(t,x)$ does not appear breakdown until $t=T$ provided $\nabla u(t,x)\in L^1([0,T]; L^\infty(\mr^n))$, $n=2,3$.
In this paper we study the acoustic properties of porous media saturated by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid. The model considered here consists of a linear deformable porous skeleton having memory that is surrounded by a viscoelastic Oldroyd fluid. Assuming the microstructures to be almost periodically distributed and under the almost periodicity hypothesis on the coefficients of the governing equations, we determine the macroscopic equivalent medium. To achieve our goal, we use some very recent tools about the sigma convergence of convolution sequences.
We consider the large time behavior of solutions of compressible viscoelastic system around a motionless state in a three-dimensional whole space. We show that if the initial preturbation belongs to $W^{2,1}$, and is sufficiently small in $H^4\cap L^1$, the solutions grow in time at the same rate as $t^{\frac{1}{2}}$ in $L^1$ due to diffusion wave phenomena of the system caused by interaction between sound wave, viscous diffusion and elastic wave.
In this paper, we are concerned with the convergence rates of the global strong solution to constant equilibrium state for the compressible viscoelastic fluids in the whole space. We combine both analysis about Green's matrix method and energy estimate method to get optimal time decay rate in critical Besov space framework. Our result imply the optimal $L^{2}$-time decay rate and only need the initial data to be small in critical Besov space which have very low regularity compared with traditional Sobolev space.
The global solutions in critical spaces to the multi-dimensional compressible viscoelastic flows are considered. The global existence of the Cauchy problem with initial data close to an equilibrium state is established in Besov spaces. Using uniform estimates for a hyperbolic-parabolic linear system with convection terms, we prove the global existence in the Besov space which is invariant with respect to the {scaling} of the associated equations. Several important estimates are achieved, including a smoothing effect on the velocity, and the $L^1-$decay of the density and deformation gradient.
The inviscid limit for the two-dimensional compressible viscoelastic equations on the half plane is considered under the no-slip boundary condition. When the initial deformation tensor is a perturbation of the identity matrix and the initial density is near a positive constant, we establish the uniform estimates of solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the conormal Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that for the corresponding inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the no-slip boundary condition, one does not expect the uniform energy estimates of solutions …
We consider the large time behavior of global strong solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N\,(N\geq 2)$, where the system describes the elastic properties of the compressible fluid. Adding a suitable initial condition involving only the low-frequency, we prove optimal time decay estimates for the global solutions in the $L^p$ critical regularity framework, which are similar to those of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our results rely on the pure energy argument, which allows us to remove the usual smallness assumption of the data in the low-…
In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and optimal rates of strong solutions for three-dimensional compressible viscoelastic flows. We prove the global existence of the strong solutions by the standard energy method under the condition that the initial data are close to the constant equilibrium state in $H^2$-framework. If additionally the initial data belong to $L^1$, the optimal convergence rates of the solutions in $L^p$-norm with $2\leq p\leq 6$ and optimal convergence rates of their spatial derivatives in $L^2$-norm are obtained.
We are interested in the multi-dimentional compressible viscoelastic flows of Oldroyd type, which is one of non-Newtonian fluids exhibiting the elastic behavior. In order to capture the damping effect of the additional deformation tensor, to the best of our knowledge, the "div-curl" structural condition plays a key role in previous efforts. Our aim of this paper is to remove the structural condition and prove a global existence of strong solutions to compressible viscoelastic flows in critical spaces. The new ingredient lies in the introduction of effective flux $(θ,\mathcal{G})$, which enable…
In this paper we study a 2D Oldroyd free-boundary model which describes the evolution of a viscoelastic fluid. We prove existence of splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. This paper extends the previous results obtained for infinite Weissenberg number to the case of any finite Weissenberg number. The main difficulty of this paper is due to the non linear balance law of the elastic tensor which cannot be reduced, as in the case of infinite Weissenberg, to the transport equations for the deformation gradient. Our strategy in accurate local exi…
We provide a proof of global regularity of solutions of some models of viscoelastic flow with an integral constitutive law, in the two spatial dimensions and in a periodic domain. Models that are included in these results are classical models for flow memory: for instance some K-BKZ models, the PSM model or the Wagner model. The proof is based on the fact that these models naturally give a $L^\infty$-bound on the stress and that they allow to control the spatial gradient of the stress. The main result does not cover the case of the Oldroyd-B model.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem associated to a system of PDE's of Oldroyd type. The considered model describes the evolution of certain viscoelastic fluids within a corotational framework. The non-corotational setting is also addressed in dimension two. We show that some widespread results concerning the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations can be extended to the considered systems. In particular we show the existence and uniqueness of global-in-time classical solutions for large data in dimension two. This result is supported by suitable condition on the initial data to pr…
In this paper, we prove the global existence of general small solutions to compressible viscoelastic system. We remove the "initial state" assumption ($\tilde ρ_0 \det F_0 =1$) and the "div-curl" structure assumption compared with previous works. It then broadens the class of solutions to a great extent, more precisely the initial density state would not be constant necessarily, and no more structure is need for global well-posedness. It's quite different from the elasticity system in which structure plays an important role. Since we can not obtain any dissipation information for density and d…
We investigate local and global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of a solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations. More precisely, the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. We point out a smoothing effect on the velocity and a $L^1-$decay on the difference between the deformation tensor and the identity matrix. Our result implies that the…
This paper is dedicated to the global existence and optimal decay estimates of strong solutions to the compressible viscoelastic flows in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$ with any $n\geq2$. We aim at extending those works by Qian \& Zhang and Hu \& Wang to the critical $L^p$ Besov space, which is not related to the usual energy space. With aid of intrinsic properties of viscoelastic fluids as in \cite{QZ1}, we consider a more complicated hyperbolic-parabolic system than usual Navier-Stokes equations. We define "\emph{two effective velocities}", which allows us to cancel out the coupling among th…
We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in the whole space and the periodic problem in the n-dimensional torus for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd-B type in the case of near equilibrium initial data. The results hold in both two and three dimensional spaces. The results and methods presented in this paper are also valid for a wide range of elastic complex fluids, such as magnetohydrodynamics, liquid crystals and mixture problems.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for an inviscid compressible Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions. The global well posedness of strong solutions and the associated time-decay estimates in Sobolev spaces are established near an equilibrium state. The vanishing of viscosity is the main challenge compared with our previous work [47] where the viscosity coefficients are included and the decay rates for the highest-order derivatives of the solutions seem not optimal. One of the main objectives of this paper is to develop some new dissipative estimates such that the smallness of the ini…
We investigate global strong solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd--B type with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the global solution in a functional setting invariant by the scaling of the associated equations, where the initial velocity has the same critical regularity index as for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations, and one more derivative is needed for the deformation tensor. Like the classical incompressible Navier-Stokes, one may construct the unique global solution for a class of large highly osci…
In this paper we analyze a 2D free-boundary viscoelastic fluid model of Oldroyd-B type at infinite Weissenberg number. Our main goal is to show the existence of the so-called splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. The combination of existence and stability results allows us to construct a special class of initial data, which evolve in time into self-intersecting configurations. To this purpose we apply the classical conformal mapping method and later we move to the Lagrangian framework, as a consequence we deduce the existence of splash singu…
This paper is concerned with regular flows of incompressible weakly viscoelastic fluids which obey a differential constitutive law of Oldroyd type. We study the newtonian limit for weakly viscoelastic fluid flows in $\R^N$ or $\T^N$ for $N=2, 3$, when the Weissenberg number (relaxation time measuring the elasticity effect in the fluid) tends to zero. More precisely, we prove that the velocity field and the extra-stress tensor converge in their existence spaces (we examine the Sobolev-$H^s$ theory and the Besov-$B^{s,1}_2$ theory to reach the critical case $s= N/2$) to the corresponding newtoni…
We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterpa…
