Let $A(n, d)$ denote the maximum size of a binary code of length $n$ and minimum Hamming distance $d$. Studying $A(n, d)$, including efforts to determine it as well to derive bounds on $A(n, d)$ for large $n$'s, is one of the most fundamental subjects in coding theory. In this paper, we explore new lower and upper bounds on $A(n, d)$ in the large-minimum distance regime, in particular, when $d = n/2 - Ω(\sqrt{n})$. We first provide a new construction of cyclic codes, by carefully selecting specific roots in the binary extension field for the check polynomial, with length $n= 2^m -1$, distance $d \geq n/2 - 2^{c-1}\sqrt{n}$, and size $n^{c+1/2}$, for any $m\geq 4$ and any integer $c$ with $0 \leq c \leq m/2 - 1$. These code parameters are slightly worse than those of the Delsarte--Goethals (DG) codes that provide the previously known best lower bound in the large-minimum distance regime. However, using a similar and extended code construction technique we show a sequence of cyclic codes that improve upon DG codes and provide the best lower bound in a narrower range of the minimum distance $d$, in particular, when $d = n/2 - Ω(n^{2/3})$. Furthermore, by leveraging a Fourier-analytic view of Delsarte's linear program, upper bounds on $A(n, n/2 - ρ\sqrt{n})$ with $ρ\in (0.5, 9.5)$ are obtained that scale polynomially in $n$. To the best of authors' knowledge, the upper bound due to Barg and Nogin \cite{barg2006spectral} is the only previously known upper bound that scale polynomially in $n$ in this regime. We numerically demonstrate that our upper bound improves upon the Barg-Nogin upper bound in the specified high-minimum distance regime.
We consider upward scaling an overloaded min-TSC binary signature set and propose an optimal solution based on improved sphere decoding algorithm. Instead of previous suboptimal approach, we are guaranteed to find the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) searching result with low complexity.
Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a p…
We classify 8-divisible binary linear codes with minimum distance 24 and small length. As an application we consider the codes associated to nodal sextics with 65 ordinary double points.
We devise an analytically simple as well as invertible approximate expression, which describes the relation between the minimum distance of a binary code and the corresponding maximum attainable code-rate. For example, for a rate-(1/4), length-256 binary code the best known bounds limit the attainable minimum distance to 65<d(n=256,k=64)<90, while our solution yields d(n=256,k=64)=74.4. The proposed formula attains the approximation accuracy within the rounding error for ~97% of (n,k) scenarios, where the exact value of the minimum distance is known. The results provided may be utilized for th…
Motivated by applications in combinatorial design theory and constructing LCD codes, C. Ding et al \cite{DLX} introduced cyclic codes $\mho(q,m,h)$ and $\bar\mho(q,m,h)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ as new generalization and version of the punctured binary Reed-Muller codes. In this paper, we show several new results on minimum distance of $\mho(q,m,h)$ and $\bar\mho(q,m,h)$ which are generalization or improvement of previous results given in \cite{DLX}.
This paper presents a new decoding for polynomial residue codes, called the minimum degree-weighted distance decoding. The newly proposed decoding is based on the degree-weighted distance and different from the traditional minimum Hamming distance decoding. It is shown that for the two types of minimum distance decoders, i.e., the minimum degree-weighted distance decoding and the minimum Hamming distance decoding, one is not absolutely stronger than the other, but they can complement each other from different points of view.
All codes with minimum distance 8 and codimension up to 14 and all codes with minimum distance 10 and codimension up to 18 are classified. Nonexistence of codes with parameters [33,18,8] and [33,14,10] is proved. This leads to 8 new exact bounds for binary linear codes. Primarily two algorithms considering the dual codes are used, namely extension of dual codes with a proper coordinate, and a fast algorithm for finding a maximum clique in a graph, which is modified to find a maximum set of vectors with the right dependency structure.
The minimum distance graph of a code has the codewords as vertices and edges exactly when the Hamming distance between two codewords equals the minimum distance of the code. A constructive proof for reconstructibility of an extended perfect binary one-error-correcting code from its minimum distance graph is presented. Consequently, inequivalent such codes have nonisomorphic minimum distance graphs. Moreover, it is shown that the automorphism group of a minimum distance graph is isomorphic to that of the corresponding code.
A new bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. It is based on the description by another cyclic code with small minimum distance. The connection to the BCH bound and the Hartmann--Tzeng (HT) bound is formulated explicitly. We show that for many cases our approach improves the HT bound. Furthermore, we refine our bound for several families of cyclic codes. We define syndromes and formulate a Key Equation that allows an efficient decoding up to our bound with the Extended Euclidean Algorithm. It turns out that lowest-code-rate cyclic codes with small minimum distances are…
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their dual codes trivially. We study the largest minimum weight $d_2(n,k)$ among all binary LCD $[n,k]$ codes and the largest minimum weight $d_3(n,k)$ among all ternary LCD $[n,k]$ codes. The largest minimum weights $d_2(n,5)$ and $d_3(n,4)$ are partially determined. We also determine the largest minimum weights $d_2(n,n-5)$, $d_3(n,n-i)$ for $i \in \{2,3,4\}$, and $d_3(n,k)$ for $n \in \{11,12,\ldots,19\}$.
In this paper we show the usability of the Gray code with constant weight words for computing linear combinations of codewords. This can lead to a big improvement of the computation time for finding the minimum distance of a code. We have also considered the usefulness of combinatorial $2$-$(t,k,1)$ designs when there are memory limitations to the number of objects (linear codes in particular) that can be tested for equivalence.
A lower bound on the number of uncorrectable errors of weight half the minimum distance is derived for binary linear codes satisfying some condition. The condition is satisfied by some primitive BCH codes, extended primitive BCH codes, Reed-Muller codes, and random linear codes. The bound asymptotically coincides with the corresponding upper bound for Reed-Muller codes and random linear codes. By generalizing the idea of the lower bound, a lower bound on the number of uncorrectable errors for weights larger than half the minimum distance is also obtained, but the generalized lower bound is wea…
Two upper bounds on the minimum distance of type-1 quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC LDPC) codes are derived. The necessary condition is given for the minimum code distance of such codes to grow linearly with the code length.
We propose a binary message passing decoding algorithm for product codes based on generalized minimum distance decoding (GMDD) of the component codes, where the last stage of the GMDD makes a decision based on the Hamming distance metric. The proposed algorithm closes half of the gap between conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) and turbo product decoding based on the Chase--Pyndiah algorithm, at the expense of some increase in complexity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm entails only a limited increase in data flow compared to iBDD.
This paper presents a method to merge Generalized Minimum Distance decoding of Reed-Solomon codes with the extended Euclidean algorithm. By merge, we mean that the steps taken to perform the Generalized Minimum Distance decoding are similar to those performed by the extended Euclidean algorithm. The resulting algorithm has a complexity of O(n^2).
Low autocorrelation binary sequences (LABS) are very important for communication applications. And it is a notoriously difficult computational problem to find binary sequences with low aperiodic autocorrelations. The problem can also be stated in terms of finding binary sequences with minimum energy levels or maximum merit factor defined by M.J.E. Golay, F=N^2/2E, N and E being the sequence length and energy respectively. Conjectured asymptotic value of F is 12.32 for very long sequences. In this paper, a theorem has been proved to show that there are finite number of possible energy levels, s…
This paper presents a method to determine a set of basis polynomials from the extended Euclidean algorithm that allows Generalized Minimum Distance decoding of Reed-Solomon codes with a complexity of O(nd).
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. We study the largest minimum weight $d(n,k)$ among all binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes. We determine $d(n,4)$ for $n \equiv 2,3,4,5,6,9,10,13 \pmod{15}$, and $d(n,5)$ for $n \equiv 3,4,5,7,11,19,20,22,26 \pmod{31}$. Combined with known results, the values $d(n,k)$ are also determined for $n \le 24$.
Symbol-pair codes are proposed to guard against pair-errors in symbol-pair read channels. The minimum symbol-pair distance plays a vital role in determining the error-correcting capability and the constructions of symbol-pair codes with largest possible minimum symbol-pair distance is of great importance. Maximum distance separable (\,MDS\,) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that such codes can acheive the Singleton bound. In this paper, for length $5p$, two new classes of MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum symbol-pair distance seven or eight are constructed by utilizing repeated-root…
The minimum distance of expander codes over GF(q) is studied. A new upper bound on the minimum distance of expander codes is derived. The bound is shown to lie under the Varshamov-Gilbert (VG) bound while q >= 32. Lower bounds on the minimum distance of some families of expander codes are obtained. A lower bound on the minimum distance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with a Reed--Solomon constituent code over GF(q) is obtained. The bound is shown to be very close to the VG bound and to lie above the upper bound for expander codes.
The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we characterize the existence of binary self-orthogonal codes meeting the Griesmer bound by employing Solomon-Stiffler codes and some related residual codes. Second, using such a characterization, we determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,7)$ except for five special cases and the exact value of $d_{so}(n,8)$ except for 41 special cases, where $d_{so}(n,k)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all binary self-orthogonal $[n, k]$ codes. Currently, the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ $(k \le 6)$ was determined by Shi et al. (2022). In addition, we …
In this correspondence, we introduced the concept of minimum roman dominating distance energy $E_{RDd}(G)$ of a graph $G$ and computed minimum roman dominating distance energy of some standard graphs. Also, we discussed the properties of eigenvalues of a minimum roman dominating distance matrix $A_{RDd}(G).$ Finally, we derived the Upper and lower bounds for $E_{RDd}(G).$
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. We study binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight among all binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes. We characterize binary linear complementary dual codes with the largest minimum weight for small dimensions. A complete classification of binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight is also given for $1 \le k \le n \le 16$.
This work applies earlier results on Quasi-Cyclic (QC) LDPC codes to the codes specified in six separate IEEE 802 standards, specifying wireless communications from 54 MHz to 60 GHz. First, we examine the weight matrices specified to upper bound the codes' minimum distance independent of block length. Next, we search for the minimum distance achieved for the parity check matrices selected at each block length. Finally, solutions to the computational challenges encountered are addressed.
We show that for (systematic) linear codes the time complexity of unique decoding is O(n^{2}q^{nRH(delta/2/R)}) and the time complexity of minimum distance decoding is O(n^{2}q^{nRH(delta/R)}). The proposed algorithm inspects all error patterns in the information set of the received message of weight less than d/2 or d, respectively.
Fractional repetition (FR) codes are a class of repair efficient erasure codes that can recover a failed storage node with both optimal repair bandwidth and complexity. In this paper, we study the minimum distance of FR codes, which is the smallest number of nodes whose failure leads to the unrecoverable loss of the stored file. We consider upper bounds on the minimum distance and present several families of explicit FR codes attaining these bounds. The optimal constructions are derived from regular graphs and combinatorial designs, respectively.
Permutation codes of length $n$ and distance $d$ is a set of permutations on $n$ symbols, where the distance between any two elements in the set is at least $d$. Subgroup permutation codes are permutation codes with the property that the elements are closed under the operation of composition. In this paper, under the distance metric $\ell_{\infty}$-norm, we prove that finding the minimum weight codeword for subgroup permutation code is NP-complete. Moreover, we show that it is NP-hard to approximate the minimum weight within the factor $7/6-ε$ for any $ε>0$.
The minimum distance graph of an extended Preparata code P(m) has vertices corresponding to codewords and edges corresponding to pairs of codewords that are distance 6 apart. The clique structure of this graph is investigated and it is established that the minimum distance graphs of two extended Preparata codes are isomorphic if and only if the codes are equivalent.
The purpose of this paper is to solve the two conjectures on the largest minimum distance $d_{so}(n,5)$ of a binary self-orthogonal $[n,5]$ code proposed by Kim and Choi (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2022). The determination of $d_{so}(n,k)$ has been a fundamental and difficult problem in coding theory because there are too many binary self-orthogonal codes as the dimension $k$ increases. Recently, Kim et al. (2021) considered the shortest self-orthogonal embedding of a binary linear code, and many binary optimal self-orthogonal $[n,k]$ codes were constructed for $k=4,5$. Kim and Choi (2022) impro…
Binary duadic codes are an interesting subclass of cyclic codes since they have large dimensions and their minimum distances may have a square-root bound. In this paper, we present several families of binary duadic codes of length $2^m-1$ and develop some lower bounds on their minimum distances by using the BCH bound on cyclic codes, which partially solves one case of the open problem proposed in \cite{LLD}. It is shown that the lower bounds on their minimum distances are close to the square root bound. Moreover, the parameters of the dual and extended codes of these binary duadic codes are in…
In this letter we consider the ensemble of codes formed by the serial concatenation of a Hamming code and two accumulate codes. We show that this ensemble is asymptotically good, in the sense that most codes in the ensemble have minimum distance growing linearly with the block length. Thus, the resulting codes achieve high minimum distances with high probability, about half or more of the minimum distance of a typical random linear code of the same rate and length in our examples. The proposed codes also show reasonably good iterative convergence thresholds, which makes them attractive for app…

In this paper, we propose a construction for multi-kernel polar codes based on the maximization of the minimum distance. Compared to the original construction based on density evolution, our new design shows particular advantages for short code lengths, where the polarization effect has less impact on the performance than the distances of the code. We introduce and compute the minimum-distance profile and provide a simple greedy algorithm for the code design. Compared to state-of-the-art punctured or shortened Arikan polar codes, multi-kernel polar codes with our new design show significantly …
The simple interpretation of the minimum distance of a linear code obtained by De Boer and Pellikaan, and later refined by the second author, is further developed through the study of various finitely generated graded modules. We use the methods of commutative/homological algebra to find connections between the minimum distance and the $α$-invariant of such modules.
A new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of linear quasi-cyclic codes over finite fields is proposed. It is based on spectral analysis and generalizes the Semenov- Trifonov bound in a similar way as the Hartmann-Tzeng bound extends the BCH approach for cyclic codes. Furthermore, a syndrome-based algebraic decoding algorithm is given.
A new lower bound on the minimum distance of q-ary cyclic codes is proposed. This bound improves upon the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) bound and, for some codes, upon the Hartmann-Tzeng (HT) bound. Several Boston bounds are special cases of our bound. For some classes of codes the bound on the minimum distance is refined. Furthermore, a quadratic-time decoding algorithm up to this new bound is developed. The determination of the error locations is based on the Euclidean Algorithm and a modified Chien search. The error evaluation is done by solving a generalization of Forney's formula.
Dihedral codes, particular cases of quasi-cyclic codes, have a nice algebraic structure which allows to store them efficiently. In this paper, we investigate it and prove some lower bounds on their dimension and minimum distance, in analogy with the theory of BCH codes. This allows us to construct dihedral codes with prescribed minimum distance. In the binary case, we present some examples of optimal dihedral codes obtained by this construction.
An array low-density parity-check (LDPC) code is a quasi-cyclic LDPC code specified by two integers $q$ and $m$, where $q$ is an odd prime and $m \leq q$. The exact minimum distance, for small $q$ and $m$, has been calculated, and tight upper bounds on it for $m \leq 7$ have been derived. In this work, we study the minimum distance of the spatially-coupled version of these codes. In particular, several tight upper bounds on the optimal minimum distance for coupling length at least two and $m=3,4,5$, that are independent of $q$ and that are valid for all values of $q \geq q_0$ where $q_0$ depen…
An expander code is a binary linear code whose parity-check matrix is the bi-adjacency matrix of a bipartite expander graph. We provide a new formula for the minimum distance of such codes. We also provide a new proof of the result that $2(1-\varepsilon) γn$ is a lower bound of the minimum distance of the expander code given by a $(m,n,d,γ,1-\varepsilon)$ expander bipartite graph.
The current best asymptotic lower bound on the minimum distance of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate is logarithmic in the blocklength. We propose a construction of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate and prove that the minimum distance grows proportionally to the square root of the blocklength.
In this paper the choice of the Bernoulli distribution as biased distribution for importance sampling (IS) Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation of linear block codes over binary symmetric channels (BSCs) is studied. Based on the analytical derivation of the optimal IS Bernoulli distribution, with explicit calculation of the variance of the corresponding IS estimator, two novel algorithms for fast-simulation of linear block codes are proposed. For sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) one of the proposed algorithm is SNR-invariant, i.e. the IS estimator does not depend on the cross-over probab…
In [1] a syndrome counting based upper bound on the minimum distance of regular binary LDPC codes is given. In this paper we extend the bound to the case of irregular and generalized LDPC codes over GF(q). The comparison to the lower bound for LDPC codes over GF(q) and to the upper bound for non-binary codes is done. The new bound is shown to lie under the Gilbert-Varshamov bound at high rates.
We study constacyclic codes, of length $np^s$ and $2np^s$, that are generated by the polynomials $(x^n + γ)^{\ell}$ and $(x^n - ξ)^i(x^n + ξ)^j$\ respectively, where $x^n + γ$, $x^n - ξ$ and $x^n + ξ$ are irreducible over the alphabet $\F_{p^a}$. We generalize the results of [5], [6] and [7] by computing the minimum Hamming distance of these codes. As a particular case, we determine the minimum Hamming distance of cyclic and negacyclic codes, of length $2p^s$, over a finite field of characteristic $p$.
Cyclic codes are an interesting type of linear codes and have wide applications in communication and storage systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Inspired by the recent work on binary cyclic codes published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 68, no. 12, pp. 7842-7849, 2022, the objectives of this paper are the construction and analyses of five infinite families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, k]$ and $(n-6)/3 \leq k \leq 2(n+6)/3$. Three of the five families of binary cyclic codes and their duals have a very good lower bound on their minimum distances and …
Distributed and cloud storage systems are used to reliably store large-scale data. Erasure codes have been recently proposed and used in real-world distributed and cloud storage systems such as Google File System, Microsoft Azure Storage, and Facebook HDFS-RAID, to enhance the reliability. In order to decrease the repair bandwidth and disk I/O, a class of erasure codes called locally repairable codes (LRCs) have been proposed which have small locality compare to other erasure codes. Although LRCs have small locality, they have lower minimum distance compare to the Singleton bound. Hence, seeki…
According to their strength, the tracing properties of a code can be categorized as frameproof, separating, IPP and TA. It is known that if the minimum distance of the code is larger than a certain threshold then the TA property implies the rest. Silverberg et al. ask if there is some kind of tracing capability left when the minimum distance falls below the threshold. Under different assumptions, several papers have given a negative answer to the question. In this paper further progress is made. We establish values of the minimum distance for which Reed-Solomon codes do not posses the separati…
