We classify 8-divisible binary linear codes with minimum distance 24 and small length. As an application we consider the codes associated to nodal sextics with 65 ordinary double points.
We show that no projective 16-divisible binary linear code of length 131 exists. This implies several improved upper bounds for constant-dimension codes, used in random linear network coding, and partial spreads.
The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight three have been determined by Chee, Ge and Ling with four cases in doubt. Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal quaternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distances five or six through group divisible codes and Room square approaches. The problem is solved leaving only five lengths undetermined. Previously, the results on the sizes of such quaternary constant-composition codes were scarce.
The minimum distance graph of a code has the codewords as vertices and edges exactly when the Hamming distance between two codewords equals the minimum distance of the code. A constructive proof for reconstructibility of an extended perfect binary one-error-correcting code from its minimum distance graph is presented. Consequently, inequivalent such codes have nonisomorphic minimum distance graphs. Moreover, it is shown that the automorphism group of a minimum distance graph is isomorphic to that of the corresponding code.
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their dual codes trivially. We study the largest minimum weight $d_2(n,k)$ among all binary LCD $[n,k]$ codes and the largest minimum weight $d_3(n,k)$ among all ternary LCD $[n,k]$ codes. The largest minimum weights $d_2(n,5)$ and $d_3(n,4)$ are partially determined. We also determine the largest minimum weights $d_2(n,n-5)$, $d_3(n,n-i)$ for $i \in \{2,3,4\}$, and $d_3(n,k)$ for $n \in \{11,12,\ldots,19\}$.
Divisible codes are defined by the property that codeword weights share a common divisor greater than one. They are used to design signals for communications and sensing, and this paper explores how they can be used to protect quantum information as it is transformed by logical gates. Given a CSS code $\mathcal{C}$, we derive conditions that are both necessary and sufficient for a transversal diagonal physical operator $U_Z$ to preserve $\mathcal{C}$ and induce $U_L$. The group of $Z$-stabilizers in a CSS code $\mathcal{C}$ is determined by the dual of a classical $[n, k_1]$ binary code $\math…
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. We study the largest minimum weight $d(n,k)$ among all binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes. We determine $d(n,4)$ for $n \equiv 2,3,4,5,6,9,10,13 \pmod{15}$, and $d(n,5)$ for $n \equiv 3,4,5,7,11,19,20,22,26 \pmod{31}$. Combined with known results, the values $d(n,k)$ are also determined for $n \le 24$.
Linear complementary dual codes (or codes with complementary duals) are codes whose intersections with their dual codes are trivial. We study binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight among all binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes. We characterize binary linear complementary dual codes with the largest minimum weight for small dimensions. A complete classification of binary linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ codes with the largest minimum weight is also given for $1 \le k \le n \le 16$.
Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a p…
The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight three have been determined by Chee, Ge and Ling with four cases in doubt. Group divisible codes played an important role in their constructions. In this paper, we study the problem of constructing optimal ternary constant-composition codes with Hamming weight four and minimum distance six. The problem is solved with a small number of lengths undetermined. The previously known results are those with code length no greater than 10.
We devise an analytically simple as well as invertible approximate expression, which describes the relation between the minimum distance of a binary code and the corresponding maximum attainable code-rate. For example, for a rate-(1/4), length-256 binary code the best known bounds limit the attainable minimum distance to 65<d(n=256,k=64)<90, while our solution yields d(n=256,k=64)=74.4. The proposed formula attains the approximation accuracy within the rounding error for ~97% of (n,k) scenarios, where the exact value of the minimum distance is known. The results provided may be utilized for th…
Motivated by applications in combinatorial design theory and constructing LCD codes, C. Ding et al \cite{DLX} introduced cyclic codes $\mho(q,m,h)$ and $\bar\mho(q,m,h)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ as new generalization and version of the punctured binary Reed-Muller codes. In this paper, we show several new results on minimum distance of $\mho(q,m,h)$ and $\bar\mho(q,m,h)$ which are generalization or improvement of previous results given in \cite{DLX}.
All codes with minimum distance 8 and codimension up to 14 and all codes with minimum distance 10 and codimension up to 18 are classified. Nonexistence of codes with parameters [33,18,8] and [33,14,10] is proved. This leads to 8 new exact bounds for binary linear codes. Primarily two algorithms considering the dual codes are used, namely extension of dual codes with a proper coordinate, and a fast algorithm for finding a maximum clique in a graph, which is modified to find a maximum set of vectors with the right dependency structure.
We consider upward scaling an overloaded min-TSC binary signature set and propose an optimal solution based on improved sphere decoding algorithm. Instead of previous suboptimal approach, we are guaranteed to find the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) searching result with low complexity.
In this paper we show the usability of the Gray code with constant weight words for computing linear combinations of codewords. This can lead to a big improvement of the computation time for finding the minimum distance of a code. We have also considered the usefulness of combinatorial $2$-$(t,k,1)$ designs when there are memory limitations to the number of objects (linear codes in particular) that can be tested for equivalence.
A lower bound on the number of uncorrectable errors of weight half the minimum distance is derived for binary linear codes satisfying some condition. The condition is satisfied by some primitive BCH codes, extended primitive BCH codes, Reed-Muller codes, and random linear codes. The bound asymptotically coincides with the corresponding upper bound for Reed-Muller codes and random linear codes. By generalizing the idea of the lower bound, a lower bound on the number of uncorrectable errors for weights larger than half the minimum distance is also obtained, but the generalized lower bound is wea…
We propose a binary message passing decoding algorithm for product codes based on generalized minimum distance decoding (GMDD) of the component codes, where the last stage of the GMDD makes a decision based on the Hamming distance metric. The proposed algorithm closes half of the gap between conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) and turbo product decoding based on the Chase--Pyndiah algorithm, at the expense of some increase in complexity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm entails only a limited increase in data flow compared to iBDD.
Low autocorrelation binary sequences (LABS) are very important for communication applications. And it is a notoriously difficult computational problem to find binary sequences with low aperiodic autocorrelations. The problem can also be stated in terms of finding binary sequences with minimum energy levels or maximum merit factor defined by M.J.E. Golay, F=N^2/2E, N and E being the sequence length and energy respectively. Conjectured asymptotic value of F is 12.32 for very long sequences. In this paper, a theorem has been proved to show that there are finite number of possible energy levels, s…
The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we characterize the existence of binary self-orthogonal codes meeting the Griesmer bound by employing Solomon-Stiffler codes and some related residual codes. Second, using such a characterization, we determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,7)$ except for five special cases and the exact value of $d_{so}(n,8)$ except for 41 special cases, where $d_{so}(n,k)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all binary self-orthogonal $[n, k]$ codes. Currently, the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ $(k \le 6)$ was determined by Shi et al. (2022). In addition, we …
Binary duadic codes are an interesting subclass of cyclic codes since they have large dimensions and their minimum distances may have a square-root bound. In this paper, we present several families of binary duadic codes of length $2^m-1$ and develop some lower bounds on their minimum distances by using the BCH bound on cyclic codes, which partially solves one case of the open problem proposed in \cite{LLD}. It is shown that the lower bounds on their minimum distances are close to the square root bound. Moreover, the parameters of the dual and extended codes of these binary duadic codes are in…

The purpose of this paper is to solve the two conjectures on the largest minimum distance $d_{so}(n,5)$ of a binary self-orthogonal $[n,5]$ code proposed by Kim and Choi (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2022). The determination of $d_{so}(n,k)$ has been a fundamental and difficult problem in coding theory because there are too many binary self-orthogonal codes as the dimension $k$ increases. Recently, Kim et al. (2021) considered the shortest self-orthogonal embedding of a binary linear code, and many binary optimal self-orthogonal $[n,k]$ codes were constructed for $k=4,5$. Kim and Choi (2022) impro…
In this paper the choice of the Bernoulli distribution as biased distribution for importance sampling (IS) Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation of linear block codes over binary symmetric channels (BSCs) is studied. Based on the analytical derivation of the optimal IS Bernoulli distribution, with explicit calculation of the variance of the corresponding IS estimator, two novel algorithms for fast-simulation of linear block codes are proposed. For sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) one of the proposed algorithm is SNR-invariant, i.e. the IS estimator does not depend on the cross-over probab…
Dihedral codes, particular cases of quasi-cyclic codes, have a nice algebraic structure which allows to store them efficiently. In this paper, we investigate it and prove some lower bounds on their dimension and minimum distance, in analogy with the theory of BCH codes. This allows us to construct dihedral codes with prescribed minimum distance. In the binary case, we present some examples of optimal dihedral codes obtained by this construction.
An expander code is a binary linear code whose parity-check matrix is the bi-adjacency matrix of a bipartite expander graph. We provide a new formula for the minimum distance of such codes. We also provide a new proof of the result that $2(1-\varepsilon) γn$ is a lower bound of the minimum distance of the expander code given by a $(m,n,d,γ,1-\varepsilon)$ expander bipartite graph.
Cyclic codes are an interesting type of linear codes and have wide applications in communication and storage systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Inspired by the recent work on binary cyclic codes published in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 68, no. 12, pp. 7842-7849, 2022, the objectives of this paper are the construction and analyses of five infinite families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, k]$ and $(n-6)/3 \leq k \leq 2(n+6)/3$. Three of the five families of binary cyclic codes and their duals have a very good lower bound on their minimum distances and …
Given a binary nonlinear code, we provide a deterministic algorithm to compute its weight and distance distribution, and in particular its minimum weight and its minimum distance, which takes advantage of fast Fourier techniques. This algorithm's performance is similar to that of best-known algorithms for the average case, while it is especially efficient for codes with low information rate. We provide complexity estimates for several cases of interest.
In [1] a syndrome counting based upper bound on the minimum distance of regular binary LDPC codes is given. In this paper we extend the bound to the case of irregular and generalized LDPC codes over GF(q). The comparison to the lower bound for LDPC codes over GF(q) and to the upper bound for non-binary codes is done. The new bound is shown to lie under the Gilbert-Varshamov bound at high rates.
A self-dual binary linear code is called Type I code if it has singly-even codewords, i.e.~it has codewords with weight divisible by $2.$ The purpose of this paper is to investigate interesting properties of Type I codes of different lengths. Further, we build up a computer-based code-searching program based on our knowledge about Type I codes. Some computation results achieved by this program are given.
Reed-Muller (RM) codes exhibit good performance under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding due to their highly-symmetric structure. In this paper, we explore the question of whether the code symmetry of RM codes can also be exploited to achieve near-ML performance in practice. The main idea is to apply iterative decoding to a highly-redundant parity-check (PC) matrix that contains only the minimum-weight dual codewords as rows. As examples, we consider the peeling decoder for the binary erasure channel, linear-programming and belief propagation (BP) decoding for the binary-input additive white Gau…
The concepts of pseudocodeword and pseudoweight play a fundamental role in the finite-length analysis of LDPC codes. The pseudoredundancy of a binary linear code is defined as the minimum number of rows in a parity-check matrix such that the corresponding minimum pseudoweight equals its minimum Hamming distance. By using the value assignment of Chen and Kløve we present new results on the pseudocodeword redundancy of binary linear codes. In particular, we give several upper bounds on the pseudoredundancies of certain codes with repeated and added coordinates and of certain shortened subcodes. …
The generalized Poor-Verdu error lower bound established in [1] for multihypothesis testing is studied in the classical channel coding context. It is proved that for any sequence of block codes sent over the memoryless binary symmetric channel (BSC), the minimum probability of error (under maximum likelihood decoding) has a relative deviation from the generalized bound that grows at most linearly in blocklength. This result directly implies that for arbitrary codes used over the BSC, decoder ties can only affect the subexponential behavior of the minimum probability of error.
In this paper non-trivial non-linear binary systematic AMDS codes are classified in terms of their weight distributions, employing only elementary techniques. In particular, we show that their length and minimum distance completely determine the weight distribution.
The current best known $[239, 21], \, [240, 21], \, \text{and} \, [241, 21]$ binary linear codes have minimum distance 98, 98, and 99 respectively. In this article, we introduce three binary Goppa codes with Goppa polynomials $(x^{17} + 1)^6, (x^{16} + x)^6,\text{ and } (x^{15} + 1)^6$. The Goppa codes are $[239, 21, 103], \, [240, 21, 104], \, \text{and} \, [241, 21, 104]$ binary linear codes respectively. These codes have greater minimum distance than the current best known codes with the respective length and dimension. In addition, with the techniques of puncturing, shortening, and extendi…
For non-binary codes the Elias bound is a good upper bound for the asymptotic information rate at low relative minimum distance, where as the Plotkin bound is better at high relative minimum distance. In this work, we obtain a hybrid of these bounds which improves both. This in turn is based on the anticode bound which is a hybrid of the Hamming and Singleton bounds and improves both bounds. The question of convexity of the asymptotic rate function is an important open question. We conjecture a much weaker form of the convexity, and we show that our bounds follow immediately if we assume the c…
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, monomials and trinomials over finite fields with even characteristic are employed to construct a number of families of binary cyclic codes. Lower bounds on the minimum weight of some families of the cyclic codes are developed. The minimum weights of other families of the codes constructed in this paper are determined. The dimensions of the codes are flexible. Some of the codes presented…
The AWGNC, BSC, and max-fractional pseudocodeword redundancies of a binary linear code are defined to be the smallest number of rows in a parity-check matrix such that the corresponding minimum pseudoweight is equal to the minimum Hamming distance of the code. It is shown that most codes do not have a finite pseudocodeword redundancy. Also, upper bounds on the pseudocodeword redundancy for some families of codes, including codes based on designs, are provided. The pseudocodeword redundancies for all codes of small length (at most 9) are computed. Furthermore, comprehensive results are provided…
In recent years, several classes of codes are introduced to provide some fault-tolerance and guarantee system reliability in distributed storage systems, among which locally repairable codes (LRCs for short) play an important role. However, most known constructions are over large fields with sizes close to the code length, which lead to the systems computationally expensive. Due to this, binary LRCs are of interest in practice. In this paper, we focus on binary linear LRCs with disjoint repair groups. We first derive an explicit bound for the dimension k of such codes, which can be served as a…
In this paper, we describe the properties of the $i$-components of Hamming codes. We suggest constructions of the admissible families of components of Hamming codes. It is shown that every $q$-ary code of length $m$ and minimum distance 5 (for $q = 3$ the minimum distance is 3) can be embedded in a $q$-ary 1-perfect code of length $n = (q^{m}-1)/(q-1)$. It is also shown that every binary code of length $m + k$ and minimum distance $3k + 3$ can be embedded in a binary 1-perfect code of length $n = 2^{m}-1$.
The focus of this paper is on linear, binary codes with locality having locality parameter $r$, that are capable of recovering from $t\geq 2$ erasures and that moreover, have short block length. Both sequential and parallel (through orthogonal parity checks) recovery is considered here. In the case of parallel repair, minimum-block-length constructions for general $t$ are discussed. In the case of sequential repair, the results include (a) extending and characterizing minimum-block-length constructions for $t=2$, (b) providing improved bounds on block length for $t=3$ as well as a general cons…

Multi-class classification is mandatory for real world problems and one of promising techniques for multi-class classification is Error Correcting Output Code. We propose a method for constructing the Error Correcting Output Code to obtain the suitable combination of positive and negative classes encoded to represent binary classifiers. The minimum weight perfect matching algorithm is applied to find the optimal pairs of subset of classes by using the generalization performance as a weighting criterion. Based on our method, each subset of classes with positive and negative labels is appropriat…
We present new constructions of binary quantum codes from quaternary linear Hermitian self-dual codes. Our main ingredients for these constructions are nearly self-orthogonal cyclic or duadic codes over F_4. An infinite family of $0$-dimensional binary quantum codes is provided. We give minimum distance lower bounds for our quantum codes in terms of the minimum distance of their ingredient linear codes. We also present new results on the minimum distance of linear cyclic codes using their fixed subcodes. Finally, we list many new record-breaking quantum codes obtained from our constructions.
