Jet spaces on $\mathbb R^n$ have been shown to have a canonical structure of stratified Lie groups (also known as Carnot groups). We construct jet spaces over stratified Lie groups adapted to horizontal differentiation and show that these jet spaces are themselves stratified Lie groups. Furthermore, we show that these jet spaces support a prolongation theory for contact maps, and in particular, a Bäcklund type theorem holds. A byproduct of these results is an embedding theorem that shows that every stratified Lie group of step $s+1$ can be embedded in a jet space over a stratified Lie group of step $s$.
We prove that two-step analytic sub-Riemannian structures on a compact analytic manifold equipped with a smooth measure and Lipschitz Carnot groups satisfy measure contraction properties.
Let $\GG$ be a sub-Riemannian $k$-step Carnot group of homogeneous dimension $Q$. In this paper, we shall prove several geometric inequalities concerning smooth hypersurfaces (i.e. codimension one submanifolds) immersed in $\GG$, endowed with the $\HH$-perimeter measure.
In Carnot groups of step 3, all subriemannian geodesics are proved to be normal. The proof is based on a reduction argument and the Goh condition for minimality of singular curves. The Goh condition is deduced from a reformulation and a calculus of the end-point mapping which boils down to the graded structures of Carnot groups.
We characterize the rigidity of Carnot groups in the class of $C^2$ contact maps in terms of complex characteristics. Furthermore, we obtain a Liouville type theorem for Carnot groups which states that 1-quasiconformal maps form finite dimensional Lie groups.
Let G be a k-step Carnot group. We prove an isoperimetric-type inequality for compact C^2-smooth immersed hypersurfaces with boundary, involving the horizontal mean curvature of the hypersurface. This generalizes an inequality due to Michael and Simon, and Allard, independently. Some applications are discussed.
We consider mappings between Carnot groups. In this paper, which is a continuation of "Pansu pullback and rigidity of mappings between Carnot groups" (arXiv:2004.09271), we focus on Carnot groups which are nonrigid in the sense of Ottazzi-Warhurst. We show that quasisymmetric homeomorphisms are reducible in the sense that they preserve a special type of coset foliation, unless the group is isomorphic to R^n or a real or complex Heisenberg group (where the assertion fails). We use this to prove the quasisymmetric rigidity conjecture for such groups. The starting point of the proof is the pullba…
We show that strictly abnormal geodesics arise in graded nilpotent Lie groups. We construct such a group, for which some Carnot geodesics are strictly abnormal; in fact, they are not normal in any subgroup. In the step-2 case we also prove that these geodesics are always smooth. Our main technique is based on the equations for the normal and abnormal curves, that we derive (for any Lie group) explicitly in terms of the structure constants.
We show that in an $m$-step Carnot group, a probability measure with finite $m^{th}$ moment has a well-defined Buser-Karcher center-of-mass, which is a polynomial in the moments of the measure, with respect to exponential coordinates. Using this, we improve the main technical result of our previous paper concerning Sobolev mappings between Carnot groups; as a consequence, a number of rigidity and structural results from recent papers hold under weaker assumptions on the Sobolev exponent. We also give applications to quasiregular mappings, extending earlier work in the $2$-step case to general …
If f is a conformal mapping defined on a connected open subset of a Carnot group G, then either f is the composition of a translation, a dilation and an isometry, or G is the nilpotent Iwasawa component of a real rank 1 simple Lie group S, and f arises from the action of S on G, viewed as an open subset of S/P, where P is a parabolic subgroup of G and NP is open and dense in S.
We construct examples of 2-step Carnot groups related to quaternions and study their fine structure and geometric properties. This involves the Hamiltonian formalism, which is used to obtain explicit equations for geodesics and the computation of the number of geodesics joining two different points on these groups. We able to find the explicit lengths of geodesics. We present the fundamental solutions of the Heat and sub-Laplace equations for these anisotropic groups and obtain some estimates for them, which may be useful.
Stratified groups are those simply connected Lie groups whose Lie algebras admit a derivation for which the eigenspace with eigenvalue 1 is Lie generating. When a stratified group is equipped with a left-invariant path distance that is homogeneous with respect to the automorphisms induced by the derivation, this metric space is known as Carnot group. Carnot groups appear in several mathematical contexts. To understand their algebraic structure, it is useful to study some examples explicitly. In this work, we provide a list of low-dimensional stratified groups, express their Lie product, and pr…
This paper studies the infinitesimal structure of Carnot manifolds. By a Carnot manifold we mean a manifold together with a subbundle filtration of its tangent bundle which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. We introduce a notion of differential, called Carnot differential, for Carnot manifolds maps (i.e., maps that are compatible with the Carnot manifold structure). This differential is obtained as a group map between the corresponding tangent groups. We prove that, at every point, a Carnot manifold map is osculated in a very precise way by its Carnot differential at the poi…
We introduce a dynamical-systems approach for the study of the Sard problem in sub-Riemannian Carnot groups. We show that singular curves can be obtained by concatenating trajectories of suitable dynamical systems. As an applications, we positively answer the Sard problem in some classes of Carnot groups.
In this article we prove that the codimension of the abnormal set of the endpoint map for certain classes of Carnot groups of step 2 is at least three. Our result applies to all step 2 Carnot groups of dimension up to 7 and is a generalisation of a previous analogous result for step 2 free nilpotent groups.
We focus our attention on the notion of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, inside a special class of metric spaces i.e. the Carnot groups. More precisely, we provide a characterization of locally intrinsic Lipschitz functions in Carnot groups of step 2 in terms of their intrinsic distributional gradients.
This paper is a sequel of arxiv:1709.09045 and deals with privileged coordinates and nilpotent approximation of Carnot manifolds. By a Carnot manifold it is meant a manifold equipped with a filtration by subbundles of the tangent bundle which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. In this paper, we single out a special class of privileged coordinates in which the nilpotent approximation at a given point of a Carnot manifold is given by its tangent group. We call these coordinates Carnot coordinates. Examples of Carnot coordinates include Darboux coordinates on contact manifolds a…
A Carnot group G is a connected, simply connected, nilpotent Lie group with stratified Lie algebra. Intrinsic regular surfaces in Carnot groups play the same role as C^1 surfaces in Euclidean spaces. As in Euclidean spaces, intrinsic regular surfaces can be locally defined in different ways: e.g. as non critical level sets or as continuously intrinsic differentiable graphs. The equivalence of these natural definitions is the problem that we are studying. Precisely our aim is to generalize some results proved by Ambrosio, Serra Cassano, Vittone valid in Heisenberg groups to the more general set…
The aim of this paper is to give a thorough insight into the relationship between the Rumin complex on Carnot groups and the spectral sequence obtained from the filtration on forms by homogeneous weights that computes the de Rham cohomology of the underlying group.
We study the simplicial {\ell} q,p cohomology of Carnot groups G. We show vanishing and non-vanishing results depending of the range of the (p, q) gap with respect to the weight gaps in the Lie algebra cohomology of G.
We prove that the family of normal currents in the sense of Rumin in a Carnot group is compact in the flat topology. This result is obtained through a dual compactness argument for Rumin forms, using the pseudo-differential calculus in groups developed by Folland, Christ-Geller-G lowacki-Polin and Rumin. As an application, imitating de Pauw-Moonens-Pfeffer, we describe the space of charges on a Carnot group.
We prove that for every polynomial ODE there exists a Carnot group where the trajectories of the ODE lift to abnormal curves. The proof defines an explicit construction to determine a covector for the resulting abnormal curves. Using this method we give new examples of abnormal curves in Carnot groups of high step. As a byproduct of the argument, we also prove that concatenations of abnormal curves have abnormal lifts.
We focus our attention on the notion of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, inside a subclass of Carnot groups of step 2 which includes a corank 1 Carnot groups (and so the Heisenberg groups), Free groups of step 2 and the complexified Heisenberg group. More precisely, we prove the equivalence between intrinsic Lipschitz map and a weak solution to a suitable non linear first order PDE system, which generalizes Lagrangian solution in the context of Heisenberg groups.
We study metric contraction properties for metric spaces associated with left-invariant sub-Riemannian metrics on Carnot groups. We show that ideal sub-Riemannian structures on Carnot groups satisfy such properties and give a lower bound of possible curvature exponents in terms of the datas.
This paper is part of an undergraduate research project. We discuss the Heisenberg group H1, the three-dimensional space R3 equipped with one of two equivalent metrics, the Koranyi- and Carnot- Caratheodory metric. We show that the notion of length of curves for both metrics coincide, and that shortest curves, so-called geodesics, exist.
We prove an optimal reverse Poincaré inequality for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian on a Carnot group of any step. As an application we give new proofs of the isoperimetric inequality and of the boundedness of the Riesz transform in Carnot groups.
L. Capogna and M. Cowling showed that if $ϕ$ is 1-quasiconformal on an open subset of a Carnot group G, then composition with $ϕ$ preserves Q-harmonic functions, where Q denotes the homogeneous dimension of G. Then they combine this with a regularity theorem for Q-harmonic functions to show that $ϕ$ is in fact $C^\infty$. As an application, they observe that a Liouville type theorem holds for some Carnot groups of step 2. In this article we argue, using the Engel group as an example, that a Liouville type theorem can be proved for every Carnot group. Indeed, the fact that 1-quasiconformal maps…
This paper deals with the theory of rectifiability in arbitrary Carnot groups, and in particular with the study of the notion of $\mathscr{P}$-rectifiable measure. First, we show that in arbitrary Carnot groups the natural \textit{infinitesimal} definition of rectifiabile measure, i.e., the definition given in terms of the existence of \textit{flat} tangent measures, is equivalent to the global definition given in terms of coverings with intrinsically differentiable graphs, i.e., graphs with \textit{flat} Hausdorff tangents. In general we do not have the latter equivalence if we ask the coveri…
The group of real 4 by 4 upper triangular matrices with 1s on the diagonal has a left-invariant subRiemannian (or Carnot-Caratheodory) structure whose underlying distribution corresponds to the superdiagonal. We prove that the associated subRiemannian geodesic flow is not completely integrable. This provides the first example of a Carnot group (graded nilpotent Lie group with an invariant subRiemannian structure supported on the generating subspace) with a non-integrable geodesic flow. We apply this result to prove that the centralizer for the corresponding quadratic ``quantum'' Hamiltonian in…
In this paper we study the generalized mean curvature flow of sets in the sub-Riemannian geometry of Carnot groups. We extend to our context the level sets method and the weak (viscosity) solutions introduced in the Euclidean setting by Evans-Spruck and Chen-Giga-Goto. We establish two special cases of the comparison principle, existence, uniqueness and basic geometric properties of the flow.
Carnot groups are distinguished spaces that are rich of structure: they are those Lie groups equipped with a path distance that is invariant by left-translations of the group and admit automorphisms that are dilations with respect to the distance. We present the basic theory of Carnot groups together with several remarks. We consider them as special cases of graded groups and as homogeneous metric spaces. We discuss the regularity of isometries in the general case of Carnot-Caratheodory spaces and of nilpotent metric Lie groups.
A variant of Gromov's H{ö}lder-equivalence problem, motivated by a pinching problem in Riemannian geometry, is discussed. A partial result is given. The main tool is a general coarea inequality satisfied by packing energies of maps.
A Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$ admits Lusin approximation for horizontal curves if for any absolutely continuous horizontal curve $γ$ in $\mathbb{G}$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $C^1$ horizontal curve $Γ$ such that $Γ=γ$ and $Γ'=γ'$ outside a set of measure at most $\varepsilon$. We verify this property for free Carnot groups of step 2 and show that it is preserved by images of Lie group homomorphisms preserving the horizontal layer. Consequently, all step 2 Carnot groups admit Lusin approximation for horizontal curves.
In this note we show how results in \cite{BaudoinBonnefont2016, BaudoinGarofalo2013, CoulhonJiangKoskelaSikora2017} yield the Cheng-Yau estimate on two classes of sub-Riemannian manifolds: Carnot groups and sub-Riemannian manifolds satisfying a generalized curvature-dimension inequality.
We introduce a notion of rectifiability modeled on Carnot groups. Precisely, we say that a subset E of a Carnot group M and N is a subgroup of M, we say E is N-rectifiable if it is the Lipschitz image of a positive measure subset of N. First, we discuss the implications of N-rectifiability, where N is a Carnot group (not merely a subgroup of a Carnot group), which include N-approximability and the existence of approximate tangent cones isometric to N almost everywhere in E. Second, we prove that, under a stronger condition concerning the existence of approximate tangent cones isomorphic to N a…
We consider a class of stratified groups with a CR structure and a compatible control distance. For these Lie groups we show that the space of conformal maps coincide with the space of CR and anti-CR diffeomorphisms. Furthermore, we prove that on products of such groups, all CR and anti-CR maps are product maps, up to a permutation isomorphism, and affine in each component.
The notion of curvature discussed in this paper is a far going generalization of the Riemannian sectional curvature. It was first introduced by Agrachev, Barilari and Rizzi in arXiv:1306.5318, and it is defined for a wide class of optimal control problems: a unified framework including geometric structures such as Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, Finsler, and sub-Finsler structures. In this work we study the generalized sectional curvature of Carnot groups with rank-two distributions. In particular, we consider the Cartan group and Carnot groups with horizontal distribution of Goursat-type. In thes…
In sub-Riemannian geometry there exist, in general, no known explicit representations of the heat kernels, and these functions fail to have any symmetry whatsoever. In particular, they are not a function of the control distance, nor they are for instance spherically symmetric in any of the layers of the Lie algebra. Despite these unfavourable aspects, in this paper we establish a new heat semigroup characterisation of the Sobolev and $BV$ spaces in a Carnot group by means of an integral decoupling property of the heat kernel.
We prove that H-type Carnot groups of rank $k$ and dimension $n$ satisfy the $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ if and only if $K\leq 0$ and $N \geq k+3(n-k)$. The latter integer coincides with the geodesic dimension of the Carnot group. The same result holds true for the larger class of generalized H-type Carnot groups introduced in this paper, and for which we compute explicitly the optimal synthesis. This constitutes the largest class of Carnot groups for which the curvature exponent coincides with the geodesic dimension. We stress that generalized H-type Carnot groups have step 2, include all corank 1 gr…
Combining Varadhan's formula, Loewner's theorem with the method of stationary phase, we study the exact formula of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance on $2$-step groups. The method is also adapted to determine all normal geodesics from the identity element to any given point (up to a set of measure zero). As an application, we characterize the squared sub-Riemannian distance as well as the cut locus on generalized Heisenberg-type groups and on star graphs respectively. Furthermore, the long-standing open problem of Gaveau-Brockett is completely solved in the case of $N_{3, 2}$, the free Carnot g…
For the result on 1-quasiconformal maps, see the paper by Cowling and Ottazzi. The result on quasiconformal maps on Carnot groups with reducible first layer will appear in a forthcoming paper by Enrico Le Donne and Xiangdong Xie.
We study the Sard problem for the endpoint map in some well-known classes of Carnot groups. Our first main result deals with step 2 Carnot groups, where we provide lower bounds (depending only on the algebra of the group) on the codimension of the abnormal set; it turns out that our bound is always at least 3, which improves the result proved in arXiv:1503.03610 and settles a question emerged in arXiv:1709.02854. In our second main result we characterize the abnormal set in filiform groups and show that it is either a horizontal line, or a 3-dimensional algebraic variety.
In this paper we study the main geometric properties of the Carnot-Carathéodory (abbreviated CC) distance $\dc$ in the setting of $k$-step sub-Riemannian Carnot groups from many different points of view. An extensive study of the so-called normal CC-geodesics is given. We state and prove some related variational formulae and we find suitable Jacobi-type equations for normal CC-geodesics. One of our main results is a sub-Riemannian version of the Gauss Lemma. We show the existence of the metric normal for smooth non-characteristic hypersurfaces. We also compute the sub-Riemannian exponential ma…
This is the first in a series of papers on geometric mapping theory in Carnot groups -- and more generally equiregular manifolds -- in which we prove a number of new structural results for Sobolev (in particular quasisymmetric) mappings, establishing (partial) rigidity or (partial) regularity theorems, depending on the context.
We consider sub-Laplacians in open bounded sets in a homogeneous Carnot group and study their spectral properties. We prove that these operators have a pure point spectrum, and prove the existence of the spectral gap. In addition, we give applications to the small ball problem for a hypoelliptic Brownian motion and the large time behavior of the heat content in a regular domain.
We consider submanifolds of sub-Riemannian Carnot groups with intrinsic $C^1$ regularity ($C^1_H$). Our first main result is an area formula for $C^1_H$ intrinsic graphs; as an application, we deduce density properties for Hausdorff measures on rectifiable sets. Our second main result is a coarea formula for slicing $C^1_H$ submanifolds into level sets of a $C^1_H$ function.
Rank-one symmetric spaces carry a solvable group model which have a generalization to a larger class of Lie groups that are one-dimensional extensions of nilpotent groups. By examining some metric properties of these symmetric spaces, we motivate and prove the existence of analogous left-invariant, Riemannian metrics on Heintze groups of Carnot-type. These metrics adhere to certain natural curvature pinching properties, and we show in a special case that this pinching is optimal, appealing to a result of Belegradek and Kapovitch.
We consider sets of locally finite perimeter in Carnot groups. We show that if E is a set of locally finite perimeter in a Carnot group G, then for almost every x in G with respect to the perimeter measure of E, some tangent of E at x is a vertical halfspace. This is a partial extension of a theorem of Franchi-Serapioni-Serra Cassano in step 2 Carnot groups: they have shown that, for almost every x, E has a unique tangent at x, and this tangent is a vertical halfspace.
This paper provides some partial regularity results for geodesics (i.e., isometric images of intervals) in arbitrary sub-Riemannian and sub-Finsler manifolds. Our strategy is to study infinitesimal and asymptotic properties of geodesics in Carnot groups equipped with arbitrary sub-Finsler metrics. We show that tangents of Carnot geodesics are geodesics in some groups of lower nilpotency step. Namely, every blowup curve of every geodesic in every Carnot group is still a geodesic in the group modulo its last layer. Then as a consequence we get that in every sub-Riemannian manifold any $s$ times …
