We prove that H-type Carnot groups of rank $k$ and dimension $n$ satisfy the $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ if and only if $K\leq 0$ and $N \geq k+3(n-k)$. The latter integer coincides with the geodesic dimension of the Carnot group. The same result holds true for the larger class of generalized H-type Carnot groups introduced in this paper, and for which we compute explicitly the optimal synthesis. This constitutes the largest class of Carnot groups for which the curvature exponent coincides with the geodesic dimension. We stress that generalized H-type Carnot groups have step 2, include all corank 1 groups and, in general, admit abnormal minimizing curves.
As a corollary, we prove the absolute continuity of the Wasserstein geodesics for the quadratic cost on all generalized H-type Carnot groups.
We prove that any corank 1 Carnot group of dimension $k+1$ equipped with a left-invariant measure satisfies the $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ if and only if $K \leq 0$ and $N \geq k+3$. This generalizes the well known result by Juillet for the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_{k+1}$ to a larger class of structures, which admit non-trivial abnormal minimizing curves. The number $k+3$ coincides with the geodesic dimension of the Carnot group, which we define here for a general metric space. We discuss some of its properties, and its relation with the curvature exponent (the least $N$ such that the $\mathrm{MC…
We study metric contraction properties for metric spaces associated with left-invariant sub-Riemannian metrics on Carnot groups. We show that ideal sub-Riemannian structures on Carnot groups satisfy such properties and give a lower bound of possible curvature exponents in terms of the datas.
We show that every graded nilpotent Lie group $G$ of step $r$, equipped with a left invariant metric homogeneous with respect to the dilations induced by the grading, (this includes all Carnot groups with Carnot-Caratheodory metric) is Markov $p$-convex for all $p \in [2r,\infty)$. We also show that this is sharp whenever $G$ is a Carnot group with $r \leq 3$, a free Carnot group, or a jet space group; such groups are not Markov $p$-convex for any $p \in (0,2r)$. This continues a line of research started by Li who proved this sharp result when $G$ is the Heisenberg group. As corollaries, we ob…
In Carnot groups of step 2 we consider sets having maximal or minimal possible homogeneous Hausdorff dimension compared to their Euclidean one: in the first case we prove that they must be in a sense vertical, that is a large part of these sets can lie off horizontal planes through their points, and in the latter case close to horizontal. The examples that had been used to prove the sharpness of the sub-Riemannian versus Euclidean dimension comparison intuitively satisfied these geometric properties, which we here quantify and prove to be necessary. We also show the sharpness of our statements…
We prove the coarea formula for sufficiently smooth contact mappings of Carnot manifolds. In particular, we investigate level surfaces of these mappings, and compare Riemannian and sub-Riemannian measures on them. Our main tool is the sharp asymptotic behavior of the Riemannian measure of the intersection of a tangent plane to a level surface and a sub-Riemannian ball. This calculation in particular implies that the sub-Riemannian measure of the set of characteristic points (i.\,e., the points at which the sub-Riemannian differential is degenerate) equals zero on almost every level set.
We obtain sharp estimate on $p$-spectral gaps, or equivalently optimal constant in $p$-Poincaré inequalities, for metric measure spaces satisfying measure contraction property. We also prove the rigidity for the sharp $p$-spectral gap.
In the setting of Carnot groups, we exhibit examples of intrinisc Lipschitz curves of positive $\mathcal{H}^1$-measure that intersect every connected intrinsic Lipschitz curve in a $\mathcal{H}^1$-negligible set. As a consequence such curves cannot be extended to connected intrinsic Lipschitz curves. The examples are constructed in the Engel group and in the free Carnot group of step 3 and rank 2. While the failure of the Lipschitz extension property was already known for some pairs of Carnot groups, ours is the first example of the analogous phenomenon for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. This is …
We prove a sharp Poincaré inequality for subsets $Ω$ of (essentially non-branching) metric measure spaces satisfying the Measure Contraction Property $\textrm{MCP}(K,N)$, whose diameter is bounded above by $D$. This is achieved by identifying the corresponding one-dimensional model densities and a localization argument, ensuring that the Poincaré constant we obtain is best possible as a function of $K$, $N$ and $D$. Another new feature of our work is that we do not need to assume that $Ω$ is geodesically convex, by employing the geodesic hull of $Ω$ on the energy side of the Poincaré inequalit…
In this paper, we construct Hölder maps to Carnot groups equipped with a Carnot metric, especially the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. Pansu and Gromov observed that any surface embedded in $\mathbb{H}$ has Hausdorff dimension at least 3, so there is no $α$-Hölder embedding of a surface into $\mathbb{H}$ when $α>\frac{2}{3}$. Züst improved this result to show that when $α>\frac{2}{3}$, any $α$-Hölder map from a simply-connected Riemannian manifold to $\mathbb{H}$ factors through a metric tree. In the present paper, we show that Züst's result is sharp by constructing $(\frac{2}{3}-ε)$-Höld…
We prove that if $(X,\mathsf d,\mathfrak m)$ is an essentially non-branching metric measure space with $\mathfrak m(X)=1$, having Ricci curvature bounded from below by $K$ and dimension bounded from above by $N \in (1,\infty)$, understood as a synthetic condition called Measure-Contraction property, then a sharp isoperimetric inequality à la Lévy-Gromov holds true. Measure theoretic rigidity is also obtained.
We prove that for non-branching metric measure spaces the local curvature condition CDloc(K,N) implies the global version of MCP(K,N). The curvature condition CD(K,N) introduced by the second author and also studied by Lott & Villani is the generalization to metric measure space of lower bounds on Ricci curvature together with upper bounds on the dimension. It is worth pointing out that our result implies sharp Bishop-Gromov volume growth inequality and sharp Poincaré inequality.
We obtain the best known quantitative estimates for the $L^p$-Poincaré and log-Sobolev inequalities on domains in various sub-Riemannian manifolds, including ideal Carnot groups and in particular ideal generalized H-type Carnot groups and the Heisenberg groups, corank $1$ Carnot groups, the Grushin plane, and various H-type foliations, Sasakian and $3$-Sasakian manifolds. Moreover, this constitutes the first time that a quantitative estimate independent of the dimension is established on these spaces. For instance, the Li-Yau / Zhong-Yang spectral-gap estimate holds on all Heisenberg groups of…
The generic chaining method provides a sharp description of the suprema of many random processes in terms of the geometry of their index sets. The chaining functionals that arise in this theory are however notoriously difficult to control in any given situation. In the first paper in this series, we introduced a particularly simple method for producing the requisite multi scale geometry by means of real interpolation. This method is easy to use, but does not always yield sharp bounds on chaining functionals. In the present paper, we show that a refinement of the interpolation method provides a…
Our main result is a positive answer to the question whether one can find homogeneous distances on the Heisenberg groups that have the Besicovitch Covering Property (BCP). This property is well known to be one of the fundamental tools of measure theory, with strong connections with the theory of differentiation of measures. We prove that BCP is satisfied by the homogeneous distances whose unit ball centered at the origin coincides with an Euclidean ball. Such homogeneous distances do exist on any Carnot group by a result of Hebisch and Sikora. In the Heisenberg groups, they are related to the …
