One of the key challenges in the dimension theory of smooth dynamical systems is in establishing whether or not the Hausdorff, lower and upper box dimensions coincide for invariant sets. For sets invariant under conformal dynamics, these three dimensions always coincide. On the other hand, considerable attention has been given to examples of sets invariant under non-conformal dynamics whose Hausdorff and box dimensions do not coincide. These constructions exploit the fact that the Hausdorff and box dimensions quantify size in fundamentally different ways, the former in terms of covers by sets of varying diameters and the latter in terms of covers by sets of fixed diameters. In this article we construct the first example of a dynamically invariant set with distinct lower and upper box dimensions. Heuristically, this describes that if size is quantified in terms of covers by sets of equal diameters, a dynamically invariant set can appear bigger when viewed at certain resolutions than at others.
In this paper we study two random analogues of the box-like self-affine attractors introduced by Fraser, itself an extension of Sierpiński carpets. We determine the almost sure box-counting dimension for the homogeneous random case ($1$-variable random), and give a sufficient condition for the almost sure box dimension to be the expectation of the box dimensions of the deterministic attractors. Furthermore we find the almost sure box-counting dimension of the random recursive model ($\infty$-variable), which includes affine fractal percolation.
We study partially hyperbolic sets of C1-diffeomorphisms. For these sets there are defined the strong stable and strong unstable laminations. A lamination is called dynamically minimal when the orbit of each leaf intersects the set densely. We prove that partially hyperbolic sets having a dynamically minimal lamination have empty interior. We also study the Lebesgue measure and the spectral decomposition of these sets. These results can be ap- plied to C1-generic/robustly transitive attractors with one-dimensional center bundle.
Using methods from ergodic theory along with properties of the Furstenberg measure we obtain conditions under which certain classes of plane self-affine sets have Hausdorff or box-counting dimensions equal to their affinity dimension. We exhibit some new specific classes of self-affine sets for which these dimensions are equal.
We study the box dimensions of self-affine sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are generated by a finite collection of generalised permutation matrices. We obtain bounds for the dimensions which hold with very minimal assumptions and give rise to sharp results in many cases. There are many issues in extending the well-established planar theory to $\mathbb{R}^3$ including that the principal planar projections are (affine distortions of) self-affine sets with overlaps (rather than self-similar sets) and that the natural modified singular value function fails to be sub-multiplicative in general. We intr…
In dynamical systems, shrinking target sets and pointwise recurrent sets are two important classes of dynamically defined subsets. In this article we introduce a mild condition on the linear parts of the affine mappings that allow us to bound the Hausdorff dimension of cylindrical shrinking target and recurrence sets. For generic self-affine sets in the sense of Falconer, that is by randomising the translation part of the affine maps, we prove that these bounds are sharp. These mild assumptions mean that our results significantly extend and complement the existing literature for recurrence on …
We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a differen…
We present a complete proof of a theorem of C.G. Moreira. Under mild checkable conditions, the theorem asserts that the Hausdorff dimension of the arithmetic sum of two dynamically defined Cantor subsets of the real line, equals either the sum of the dimensions or 1, whichever is smaller.
In this paper we obtain new lower bounds for the upper box dimension of $αβ$ sets. As a corollary of our main result, we show that if $α$ is not a Liouville number and $β$ is a Liouville number, then the upper box dimension of any $αβ$ set is $1$. We also use our dimension bounds to obtain new results on affine embeddings of self-similar sets.
We investigate the box-counting dimension of the image of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}$ under a random multiplicative cascade function $f$. The corresponding result for Hausdorff dimension was established by Benjamini and Schramm in the context of random geometry, and for sufficiently regular sets, the same formula holds for the box-counting dimension. However, we show that this is far from true in general, and we compute explicitly a formula of a very different nature that gives the almost sure box-counting dimension of the random image $f(E)$ when the set $E$ comprises a convergent sequence. …
We give a simple upper bound for the upper box dimension of a backward invariant set of a $C^{1}$-diffeomorphism of a Riemannian manifold. We also estimate an upper bound for the box dimension of a forward invariant set of a $C^{1}$-mapping with finite Brouwer degree in a Riemannian manifold.
We consider the problem of computing the maximal invariant set of discrete-time black-box nonlinear systems without analytic dynamical models. Under the assumption that the system is asymptotically stable, the maximal invariant set coincides with the domain of attraction. A data-driven framework relying on the observation of trajectories is proposed to compute almost-invariant sets, which are invariant almost everywhere except a small subset. Based on these observations, scenario optimization problems are formulated and solved. We show that probabilistic invariance guarantees on the almost-inv…
We provide a proof of the (well-known) result that the Poincaré exponent of a non-elementary Kleinian group is a lower bound for the upper box dimension of the limit set. Our proof only uses elementary hyperbolic and fractal geometry.
This paper presents a general procedure based on using the method of types to calculate the box dimension of sets. The approach unifies and simplifies multiple box counting arguments. In particular, we use it to generalize the formula for the box dimension of self-affine carpets of Gatzouras-Lalley and of Barański type to their higher dimensional sponge analogues. In addition to a closed form, we also obtain a variational formula which resembles the Ledrappier-Young formula for Hausdorff dimension.
In this article we investigate the pressure function and affinity dimension for iterated function systems associated to the "box-like" self-affine fractals investigated by D.-J. Feng, Y. Wang and J.M. Fraser. Combining previous results of V. Yu. Protasov, A. Käenmäki and the author we obtain an explicit formula for the pressure function which makes it straightforward to compute the affinity dimension of box-like self-affine sets. We also prove a variant of this formula which allows the computation of a modified singular value pressure function defined by J.M. Fraser. We give some explicit exam…
Let $1\le m<n$ be integers, and let $K\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a self-similar set satisfying the strong separation condition, and with $\dim K=s>m$. We study the a.s. values of the $s-m$-dimensional Hausdorff and packing measures of $K\cap V$, where $V$ is a typical $n-m$-dimensional affine subspace. For $0<ρ<\frac{1}{2}$ let $C_ρ\subset[0,1]$ be the attractor of the IFS $\{f_{ρ,1},f_{ρ,2}\}$, where $f_{ρ,1}(t)=ρ\cdot t$ and $f_{ρ,2}(t)=ρ\cdot t+1-ρ$ for each $t\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that for certain numbers $0<a,b<\frac{1}{2}$, for instance $a=\frac{1}{4}$ and $b=\frac{1}{3}$, if $K=C_{a}\t…
In this paper we prove that among pairs $K,\,K' \subset \mathbb{C}$ of conformal dynamically defined Cantor sets with sum of Hausdorff dimensions $HD(K)+HD(K')>2$, there is an open and dense subset of such pairs verifying $\text{int}(K-K')\neq \emptyset$. This is motivated by the work \cite{MY}, where Moreira and Yoccoz proved a similar statement for dynamically defined Cantor sets in the real line. Here we adapt their argument to the context of conformal Cantor sets in the complex plane, this requires the introduction of several new concepts and a more detailed analysis in some parts of the a…
We show that self-similar sets arising from iterated function systems that satisfy the Moran open-set condition, a canonical class of fractal sets, are `equi-homogeneous'. This is a regularity property that, roughly speaking, means that at each fixed length-scale any two neighbourhoods of the set have covers of approximately equal cardinality. Self-similar sets are notable in that they are Ahlfors-David regular, which implies that their Assouad and box-counting dimensions coincide. More generally, attractors of non-autonomous iterated functions systems (where maps are allowed to vary between i…
We give an efficient algorithm to enumerate all sets of $r\ge 1$ quadratic polynomials over a finite field, which remain irreducible under iterations and compositions.
In this paper we compute the dimension of a class of dynamically defined non-conformal sets. Let $X\subseteq\mathbb{T}^2$ denote a Bedford-McMullen set and $T:X\to X$ the natural expanding toral endomorphism which leaves $X$ invariant. For an open set $U\subset X$ we let X_U={x\in X : T^k(x)\not\in U \text{for all}k}. We investigate the box and Hausdorff dimensions of $X_U$ for both a fixed Markov hole and also when $U$ is a shrinking metric ball. We show that the box dimension is controlled by the escape rate of the measure of maximal entropy through $U$, while the Hausdorff dimension depends…
We compute the box dimension of a spiral trajectory around a hyperbolic saddle loop, as the simplest example of a hyperbolic saddle polycycle. In cases of weak foci and limit cycles, Zubrinic and Zupanovic show that the box dimension of a spiral trajectory is in a bijective correspondence with cyclicity of these sets. We show that, in saddle loop cases, the box dimension is related to the cyclicity, but the correspondence is not bijective. In addition, complex saddles are complexifications of weak foci points, as well as of hyperbolic saddles. Computing the box dimension around the saddle poin…
It is known that if the underlying iterated function system satisfies the open set condition, then the upper box dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set is the maximum of the upper box dimensions of the homogeneous counterpart and the condensation set. First, we prove that this `expected formula' does not hold in general if there are overlaps in the construction. We demonstrate this via two different types of counterexample: the first is a family of overlapping inhomogeneous self-similar sets based upon Bernoulli convolutions; and the second applies in higher dimensions and makes use of…

In this paper we consider the Kleinian groups acting conformally on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+2}$ $(1\leq{n}\leq5)$ which have as limit sets wild spheres $K^n$ which were constructed in \cite{BHV} and prove that $K^n$ is ambient homogeneous. In other words, given two points $p,\,\,q\in{K}$ there exists a homeomorphism $ψ:\mathbb{S}^{n+2}\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{n+2} $ such that $ψ(K)=K$ and $ψ(p)=q$.
Let $E, F\subset {\Bbb R}^d$ be two self-similar sets, and suppose that $F$ can be affinely embedded into $E$. Under the assumption that $E$ is dust-like and has a small Hausdorff dimension, we prove the logarithmic commensurability between the contraction ratios of $E$ and $F$. This gives a partial affirmative answer to Conjecture 1.2 in \cite{FHR14}. The proof is based on our study of the box-counting dimension of a class of multi-rotation invariant sets on the unit circle, including the $αβ$-sets initially studied by Engelking and Katznelson.
We show that under natural technical conditions, the sum of a $C^2$ dynamically defined Cantor set with a compact set in most cases (for almost all parameters) has positive Lebesgue measure, provided that the sum of the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets exceeds one. As an application, we show that for many parameters, the Square Fibonacci Hamiltonian has spectrum of positive Lebesgue measure, while at the same time the density of states measure is purely singular.
