Qubit coherence and gate fidelity are typically considered the two most important metrics for characterizing a quantum processor. An equally important metric is inter-qubit connectivity as it minimizes gate count and allows implementing algorithms efficiently with reduced error. However, inter-qubit connectivity in superconducting processors tends to be limited to nearest neighbour due to practical constraints in the physical realization. Here, we introduce a novel superconducting architecture that uses a ring resonator as a multi-path coupling element with the qubits uniformly distributed throughout its circumference. Our planar design provides significant enhancement in connectivity over state of the art superconducting processors without any additional fabrication complexity. We theoretically analyse the qubit connectivity and experimentally verify it in a device capable of supporting up to twelve qubits where each qubit can be connected to nine other qubits. Our concept is scalable, adaptable to other platforms and has the potential to significantly accelerate progress in quantum computing, annealing, simulations and error correction.
We propose a quantum processor for the scalable quantum computation on microwave photons in distant one-dimensional superconducting resonators. It is composed of a common resonator R acting as a quantum bus and some distant resonators $r_j$ coupled to the bus in different positions assisted by superconducting quantum interferometer devices (SQUID), different from previous processors. R is coupled to one transmon qutrit, and the coupling strengths between $r_j$ and R can be fully tuned by the external flux through the SQUID. To show the processor can be used to achieve universal quantum computa…
We present two protocols for constructing quantum processor nodes in randomly doped rare-earth-ion crystals and analyze their properties. By varying the doping concentration and the accessible laser tunability, the processor nodes can contain anywhere from only a few tens to almost $1000$ qubits. Furthermore, the average number of qubits each qubit can interact with, denoted by the connectivity, can be partly tailored to lie between just a few and roughly one hundred. We also study how a limited tunability of the laser affects the results, and conclude that a tuning range of $100$ GHz limits t…

The majority of experiments demonstrating small quantum algorithms in the superconducting architecture have used transmon qubits and transverse qubit-qubit coupling. However, efficient universal digital computing has remained a challenge due to the fact that majority of the state-of-art architectures rely on nearest-neighbor coupling in one or two dimensions. The limited connectivity and the availability of onl…

We evaluate the performance of small error-correcting codes, which we tailor to hardware platforms of very different connectivity and coherence: on a superconducting processor based on transmon qubits and a spintronic quantum register consisting of a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. Taking the hardware-specific errors and connectivity into account, we investigate the dependence of the resulting logical error rate on the platform features such as the native gates, native connectivity, gate times, and coherence times. Using a standard error model parameterized for the given hardware, we simul…

We simulate the phase shift of the microwave signal in the resonator, which is sensitive to the quantum dot qubit state and manipulation. The measurement quality is sufficiently high and the results demonstrate a solid-state quantum processor based on this type of circuit can be envisioned.

Existing and near-term quantum computers can only perform two-qubit gates between physically connected qubits. Research has been done on compilers to rewrite quantum programs to match hardware constraints. However, the quantum processor architecture, in particular the qubit connectivity and topology, still lacks enough discussion, while it potentially has a huge impact on the performance of the quantum algorithms. We perform a quantitative and comprehensive study on the quantum processor performance under different qubit connectivity and topology. We select ten representative design models wit…
We present a scalable quantum-bus-based device for generating the entanglement on microwave photons (MPs) in distant superconducting resonators (SRs). Different from the processors in previous works with some resonators coupled to a superconducting qubit (SQ), our device is composed of some 1D SRs $r_j$ which are coupled to the quantum bus (another common resonator $R$) in its different positions simply, assisted by superconducting quantum interferometer devices. By using the technique for catching and releasing a MP state in a 1D SR, it can work as an entanglement generator or a node in quant…
Inspired by the challenge of scaling up existing silicon quantum hardware, we investigate compilation strategies for sparsely-connected 2d qubit arrangements and propose a spin-qubit architecture with minimal compilation overhead. Our architecture is based on silicon nanowire split-gate transistors which can form finite 1d chains of spin-qubits and allow the execution of two-qubit operations such as Swap gates among neighbors. Adding to this, we describe a novel silicon junction which can couple up to four nanowires into 2d arrangements via spin shuttling and Swap operations. Given these hardw…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple and efficient scheme for photonic communication between two remote superconducting modules. Each module consists of a random access quantum information processor with eight-qubit multimode memory and a single flux tunable transmon. The two processor chips are connected through a one-meter long coaxial cable that is coupled to a dedicated "communication" resonator on each chip. The two communication resonators hybridize with a mode of the cable to form a dark "communication mode" that is highly immune to decay in the coaxial cable. We modulate …
Based on a microwave-photon quantum processor with two superconducting resonators coupled to one transmon qutrit, we construct the controlled-phase (c-phase) gate on microwave-photon-resonator qudits, by combination of the photon-number-dependent frequency-shift effect on the transmon qutrit by the first resonator and the resonant operation between the qutrit and the second resonator. This distinct feature provides us a useful way to achieve the c-phase gate on the two resonator qudits with a higher fidelity and a shorter operation time, compared with the previous proposals. The fidelity of ou…

Quantum algorithms need to be compiled to respect the constraints imposed by quantum processors, which is known as the mapping problem. The mapping procedure will result in an increase of the number of gates and of the circuit latency, decreasing the algorithm's success rate. It is crucial to minimize mapping overhead, especially for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) processors that have relatively short qubit coherence times and high gate error rates. Most of prior mapping algorithms have only considered constraints such as the primitive gate set and qubit connectivity, but the actual g…

An important challenge in superconducting quantum computing is the need to physically couple many devices using quasi-two-dimensional fabrication processes. Recent advances in the design and fabrication of quantum annealing processors have enabled an increase in pairwise connectivity among thousands of qubits. One benefit of this is the ability to minor-embed optimization problems using fewer physical qubits for each logical spin. Here we demonstrate the benefit of this progress in the problem of minimizing the energy of three-dimensional spin glasses. Comparing the previous generation D-Wave …
Cavity optomechanics provides a unique platform for controlling micromechanical systems by means of optical fields that crosses the classical-quantum boundary to achieve solid foundations for quantum technologies. For all these applications, a crucial requirement is to cool the mechanical resonators down to their quantum ground states. In this paper, we present a novel cooling scheme to further cool a mi…
We review a recent theoretical proposal for a universal quantum computing platform based on tunable nonlinear electromechanical nano-oscillators, in which qubits are encoded in the anharmonic vibrational modes of mechanical resonators coupled to a superconducting circuitry. The digital quantum simulation of spin-type model Hamiltonians, such as the Ising model in a transverse field, could be performed with very high fidelities on such a prospective platform. Here we challenge our proposed simulator with the actual IBM-Q quantum processor available on cloud. We show that such state-of-art imple…
Advances in development of quantum computing processors brought ample opportunities to test the performance of various quantum algorithms with practical implementations. In this paper we report on implementations of quantum compression algorithm that can efficiently compress unknown quantum information. We restricted ourselves to compression of three pure qubits into two qubits, as the complexity of even such a simple implementation is barely within the reach of today's quantum processors. We implemented the algorithm on IBM quantum processors with two different topological layouts - a fully c…
Stark shift on a superconducting qubit in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) has been used to construct universal quantum entangling gates on superconducting resonators in previous works. It is a second-order coupling effect between the resonator and the qubit in the dispersive regime, which leads to a slow state-selective rotation on the qubit. Here, we present two proposals to construct the fast universal quantum gates on superconducting resonators in a microwave-photon quantum processor composed of multiple superconducting resonators coupled to a superconducting transmon qutrit, that is,…

Full connectivity of qubits is necessary for most quantum algorithms, which is difficult to directly implement on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum processors. However, inserting swap gate to enable the two-qubit gates between uncoupled qubits significantly decreases the computation result fidelity. To this end, we propose a Special-Purpose Quantum Processor Design method that can design suitable structures for different quantum algorithms. Our method extends the processor structure from two-dimensional lattice graph to general planar graph and arranges the physical couplers according to the tw…

Realizing the advantages of quantum computation requires access to the full Hilbert space of states of many quantum bits (qubits). Thus, large-scale quantum computation faces the challenge of efficiently generating entanglement between many qubits. In systems with a limited number of direct connections between qubits, entanglement between non-nearest neighbor qubits is generated by a series of nearest neighbor gates, which exponentially suppresses the resulting fidelity. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel, on-chip photon exchange network. This photonic network is embedded in a superconduc…
Early generations of superconducting quantum annealing processors have provided a valuable platform for studying the performance of a scalable quantum computing technology. These studies have directly informed our approach to the design of the next-generation processor. Our design priorities for this generation include an increase in per-qubit connectivity, a problem Hamiltonian energy scale similar to previous generations, reduced Hamiltonian specification errors, and an increase in the processor scale that also leaves programming and readout times fixed or reduced. Here we discuss the specif…
There is a recent surge of interest and insights regarding the interplay of quantum optimal control and variational quantum algorithms. Interfacing superconducting quantum processors, working in the GHz frequency range, with optical quantum networks and atomic qubits is a challenging task for the implementation of distributed quantum information processing as well as for quantum communication. Using spin ensembles of rare earth ions provide an excellent opportunity to bridge microwave and optical domains at the quantum level. In this letter, we demonstrate magnetic coupling of Er$^{3+}$ spins doped in Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ crystal to a high-Q coplanar superconducting resonator.
Transmon qubits are ubiquitously used in superconducting quantum information processor architectures. Strong drives are required to realize fast, high-fidelity, gates and measurements, including parametrically activated processes. Here, we show that even off-resonant drives, in regimes routinely used in experiments, can cause strong modifications to the structure of the transmon spectrum rendering a large part of it chaotic. Accounting for the full nonlinear dynamics of the transmon in a Floquet-Markov formalism, we find that these chaotic states, often neglected through the hypothesis that th…
Fast, high-fidelity single and two-qubit gates are essential to building a viable quantum information processor, but achieving both in the same system has proved challenging for spin qubits. We propose and analyze an approach to perform a long-distance two-qubit controlled phase (CPHASE) gate between two singlet-triplet qubits using an electromagnetic resonator to mediate their interaction. The qubits couple longitudinally to the resonator, and by driving the qubits near the resonator's frequency they can be made to acquire a state-dependent geometric phase that leads to a CPHASE gate independ…
