We study the concentrated NLS on ${\mathbf R^n}$, with power non-linearities, driven by the fractional Laplacian, $(-Δ)^s, s>\frac{n}{2}$. We construct the solitary waves explicitly, in an optimal range of the parameters, so that they belong to the natural energy space $H^s$. Next, we provide a complete classification of their spectral stability. Finally, we show that the waves are non-degenerate and consequently orbitally stable, whenever they are spectrally stable.
Incidentally, our construction shows that the soliton profiles for the concentrated NLS are in fact exact minimizers of the Sobolev embedding $H^s({\mathbf R^n})\hookrightarrow L^\infty({\mathbf R^n})$, which provides an alternative calculation and justification of the sharp constants in these inequalities.
In this paper we study the behavior of solutions of a nonlinear Schroedinger equation in presence of an external potential, which is allowed to be singular at one point. We show that the solution behaves like a solitary wave for long time even if we start from a unstable solitary wave, and its dynamics coincide with that of a classical particle evolving according to a natural effective Hamiltonian.
For nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a power nonlinearity, a new approach to derive the conservation law of the momentum and the pseudo conformal conservation law is obtained. Since this approach does not contain approximating procedure, the argument is simplified to derive these conservation laws.
In this paper I prove a L^p-L^p' estimate for the solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with a potential in L^1_gamma where in the generic case gamma > 3/2 and in the exceptional case (i.e. when there is a half-bound state of zero energy) gamma > 5/2. I use this estimate to construct the scattering operator for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a potential. I prove moreover, that the low-energy limit of the scattering operator uniquely determines the potential and the nonlinearity using a method that allows as well for the reconstruction of the potential and of the nonl…
We consider the problem -Δu+V(x)u = f'(u)+g(x) in RN, under the assumption limx \rightarrow \infty V (x) = 0, and with the non linear term f with a double power behavior. We prove the existence two solutions when g is sufficiently small and V < 0.
We investigate the asymptotic stability of standing waves for a model of Schrödinger equation with spatially concentrated nonlinearity in space dimension three. The nonlinearity studied is a power nonlinearity concentrated at the point $x=0$ obtained considering a contact (or $δ$) interaction with strength $α$, and letting the strength $α$ depend on the wavefunction in a prescribed way. For power nonlinearities in the range $(\frac{1}{\sqrt 2},1)$ there exist orbitally stable standing waves $Φ_ω$, and the linearization around them admits two imaginary eigenvalues which in principle could corre…
We study a non-linear Schroedinger equation with a Hartree-type nonlinearity and a localized random time-dependent external potential. Sharp dispersive estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation with a random time-dependent potential enable us to also treat the case of small semi-linear perturbations. In both the linear and the nonlinear instances, we prove that, on average, energy remains bounded and solutions scatter.
We consider finite energy solutions to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation and find the condition on the nonlinearity so that the standard, one-frequency solitary waves are the only solutions with compact spectrum. We also construct an example of a four-frequency solitary wave solution to the nonlinear Dirac equation in three dimensions.
We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with concentrated nonlinearity. In both the focusing and defocusing case we prove local well-posedness, i.e., existence and uniqueness of the solution for short times, as well as energy and mass conservation. In addition, we prove that this implies global existence in the defocusing case, irrespective of the power of the nonlinearity, while in the focusing case blowing-up solutions may arise.
We consider a scaling limit of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a nonlocal nonlinearity showing that it reproduces in the limit of cutoff removal a NLS equation with nonlinearity concentrated at a point. The regularized dynamics is described by the equation \begin{equation*} i\frac{\partial }{\partial t} ψ^\varepsilon(t)= -Δψ^\varepsilon(t) + g(\varepsilon,μ,|(ρ^\varepsilon,ψ^\varepsilon(t))|^{2μ}) (ρ^\varepsilon,ψ^\varepsilon(t)) ρ^\varepsilon \end{equation*} where $ρ^{\varepsilon} \to δ_0$ weakly and the function $g$ embodies the nonlinearity and the scaling and has to be fine tun…
We consider the problem Δu+V(x)u = f'(u) in RN. Here the nonlinearity has a double power behavior and V is invariant under an orthogonal involution, with V ({\infty}) = 0. An existence theorem of one pair of solutions which change sign exactly once is given.
We consider a cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential. In a semiclassical scaling the nonlinear interaction of modulated pulses concentrated in one or several Bloch bands is studied. The notion of closed mode systems is introduced which allows for the rigorous derivation of a finite system of amplitude equations describing the macroscopic dynamics of these pulses.
We consider time-dependent Schroedinger equations in one dimension with double well potential and an external nonlinear perturbation. If the initial state belongs to the eigenspace spanned by the eigenvectors associated to the two lowest eigenvalues then, in the semiclassical limit, we show that the reduction of the time-dependent equation to a 2-mode equation gives the dominant term of the solution with a precise estimate of the error. By means of this stability result we are able to prove the destruction of the beating motion for large enough nonlinearity.
We begin to study in this paper orbital and asymptotic stability of standing waves for a model of Schrödinger equation with concentrated nonlinearity in dimension three. The nonlinearity is obtained considering a {point} (or contact) interaction with strength $α$, which consists of a singular perturbation of the laplacian described by a selfadjoint operator $H_α$, where the strength $α$ depends on the wavefunction: $i\dot u= H_αu$, $α=α(u)$. If $q$ is the so-called charge of the domain element $u$, i.e. the coefficient of its singular part, we let the strength $α$ depend on $u$ according to th…
We study the behavior of the soliton solutions of the equation i((\partialψ)/(\partialt))=-(1/(2m))Δψ+(1/2)W_{ε}'(ψ)+V(x)ψ where W_{ε}' is a suitable nonlinear term which is singular for ε=0. We use the "strong" nonlinearity to obtain results on existence, shape, stability and dynamics of the soliton. The main result of this paper (Theorem 1) shows that for ε\to0 the orbit of our soliton approaches the orbit of a classical particle in a potential V(x).
In the present paper we study the following scaled nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in one space dimension: \[ i\frac{d}{dt} ψ^{\varepsilon}(t) =-Δψ^{\varepsilon}(t) + \frac{1}εV\left(\frac{x}ε\right)|ψ^{\varepsilon}(t)|^{2μ}ψ^{\varepsilon}(t) \quad \quad ε>0\ ,\quad V\in L^1(\mathbb{R},(1+|x|)dx) \cap L^\infty(\mathbb{R}) \ . \] This equation represents a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a spatially concentrated nonlinearity. We show that in the limit $ε\to 0$, the weak (integral) dynamics converges in $H^1(\mathbb{R})$ to the weak dynamics of the NLS with point-concentrated nonlineari…
The Schroedinger equation with the nonlinearity concentrated at a single point proves to be an interesting and important model for the analysis of long-time behavior of solutions, such as the asymptotic stability of solitary waves and properties of weak global attractors. In this note, we prove global well-posedness of this system in the energy space $H\sp 1$.
The global attraction is proved for the nonlinear 3D Klein-Gordon equation with a nonlinearity concentrated at one point. Our main result is the convergence of each "finite energy solution" to the manifold of all solitary waves as $t\to\pm\infty$. This global attraction is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum and subsequent dispersion radiation. We justify this mechanism by the following strategy based on inflation of spectrum by the nonlinearity. We show that any omega-limit trajectory has the time-spectrum in the spectral gap $[-m,m]$ and sa…
We analyse a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the time-evolution of the wave function of an electron beam, interacting selfconsistently through a Hartree-Fock nonlinearity and through the repulsive Coulomb interaction of an atomic nucleus. The electrons are supposed to move under the action of a time dependent, rapidly periodically oscillating electromagnetic potential. This can be considered a simplified effective single particle model for an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). We prove the existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem and the convergence of wave-functions to corresponding …
In this paper we will continue the analysis of two dimensional Schrödinger equation with a fixed, pointwise, nonlinearity started in [2, 13]. In this model, the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon has two peculiar features: the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves; there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e., for every power there exist blow-up solutions. Here we study the stability properties of stationary states to verify whether the anomalies mentioned before have any counterpart on the st…
Existence of solution and stability results on a class of Non Linear Schroedinger type equations with a bounded nonlinearity are obtained, for a bounded domain and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The kind of stability under discussion shows that the corresponding solution exhibits features of a solitary wave type.
We consider a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equation in three space dimensions with an attractive potential. The nonlinearity is local but rather general encompassing for the first time both subcritical and supercritical (in $L^2$) nonlinearities. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small initial data, converge to a nonlinear bound state. Therefore, the nonlinear bound states are asymptotically stable. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the time d…
We discuss gain of analyticity phenomenon of solutions to the initial value problem for semilinear Schroedinger equations with gauge invariant nonlinearity. We prove that if the initial data decays exponentially, then the solution becomes real-analytic in the space variable and a Gevrey function of order 2 in the time variable except in the initial plane. Our proof is based on the energy estimates developed in our previous work and on fine summation formulae concerned with a matrix norm.
Consider the H^{1/2}-critical Schroedinger equation with a cubic nonlinearity in R^3, i \partial_t ψ+ Δψ+ |ψ|^2 ψ= 0. It admits an eight-dimensional manifold of periodic solutions called solitons e^{i(Γ+ vx - t|v|^2 + α^2 t)} ϕ(x-2tv-D, α), where ϕ(x, α) is a positive ground state solution of the semilinear elliptic equation -Δϕ+ α^2ϕ= ϕ^3. We prove that in the neighborhood of the soliton manifold there exists a H^{1/2} real analytic manifold N of asymptotically stable solutions of the Schroedinger equation, meaning they are the sum of a moving soliton and a dispersive term. Furthermore, a sol…
For nonlinear Schrödinger equations in less than or equal to four dimension, with non-vanishing initial data at infinity, a new approach to derive the conservation law is obtained. Since this approach does not contain approximating procedure, the argument is simplified and some of technical assumption of the nonlinearity to derive the conservation law and time global solutions, is removed.
The Cauchy- and periodic boundary value problem for the nonlinear Schroedinger equations in $n$ space dimensions [u_t - iΔu = (\nabla \bar{u})^β, |β|=m \ge 2, u(0)=u_0 \in H^{s+1}_x] is shown to be locally well posed for $s > s_c := \frac{n}{2} - \frac{1}{m-1}$, $s \ge 0$. In the special case of space dimension $n=1$ a global $L^2$-result is obtained for NLS with the nonlinearity $N(u)= \partial_x (\bar{u} ^2)$. The proof uses the Fourier restriction norm method.
We consider the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in higher dimension with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with a non-local smoothing nonlinearity. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions. In the fully resonant case we find solutions which at leading order are wave packets, in the sense that they continue linear solutions with an arbitrarily large number of resonant modes. The main difficulty in the proof consists in solving a "small divisor problem" which we do by using a renormalisation group approach.
This paper is concerned with the global existence of small solutions to pure-power nonlinear Schroedinger equations subject to radially symmetric data with critical regularity. Under radial symmetry we focus our attention on the case where the power of nonlinearity is somewhat smaller than the pseudoconformal power and the initial data belong to the scale-invariant homogeneous Sobolev space. In spite of the negative-order differentiability of initial data the nonlinear Schroedinger equation has global in time solutions provided that the initial data have the small norm. The key ingredient in t…
We study the existence of stationnary positive solutions for a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a nonnegative continuous potential V. Amongst other results, we prove that if V has a positive local minimum, and if the exponent of the nonlinearity satisfies N/(N-2)<p<(N+2)/(N-2), then for small epsilon the problem admits positive solutions which concentrate as epsilon goes to 0 around the local minimum point of V. The novelty is that no restriction is imposed on the rate of decay of V. In particular, we cover the case where V is compactly supported.
We consider a nonlinear semi-classical Schroedinger equation for which quadratic oscillations lead to focusing at one point, described by a nonlinear scattering operator. The relevance of the nonlinearity was discussed by R. Carles, C. Fermanian-Kammerer and I. Gallagher for $L^2$-supercritical power-like nonlinearities and more general initial data. The present results concern the $L^2$-critical case, in space dimensions 1 and 2; we describe the set of non-linearizable data, which is larger, due to the scaling. As an application, we precise a result by F. Merle and L. Vega concerning finite t…
We study the inverse scattering problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the Yukawa potential. The nonlinearity of the equation is nonlocal. We reconstruct the potential and the nonlinearity by the knowledge of the scattering states. Our result is applicable to reconstructing the nonlinearity of the semi-relativistic Hartree equation.
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for all finite energy solutions to a model U(1)-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension, with the nonlinearity concentrated at a single point: each finite energy solution converges as time goes to plus or minus infinity to the set of all ``nonlinear eigenfunctions'' of the form $ψ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$. The global attraction is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum and subsequent dispersive radiation. We justify this mechanism by the following novel strategy based on inflation of spectrum by the …
In this paper, we are concerned with the following elliptic equation $$\left\{\begin{array}{rrl}-Δu&=& |u|^{4/(n-2)}u/[\ln (e+|u|)]^\varepsilon\hbox{ in } Ω,\\ u&=&0 \hbox{ on }\partial Ω, \end{array} \right.$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^n, \ n\geq 3$ and $\varepsilon>0$. Clapp et al. in Journal of Diff. Eq. (Vol 275) proved that there exists a single-peak positive solution for small $\varepsilon$ if $n \geq 4$. Here we construct positive as well as changing sign solutions concentrated at several points at the same time.
We consider the Schroedinger equation with a subcritical focusing power nonlinearity on a noncompact metric graph, and prove that for every finite edge there exists a threshold value of the mass, beyond which there exists a positive bound state achieving its maximum on that edge only. This bound state is characterized as a minimizer of the energy functional associated to the NLS equation, with an additional constraint (besides the mass prescription): this requires particular care in proving that the minimizer satisfies the Euler--Lagrange equation. As a consequence, for a sufficiently large ma…
We consider $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity $$i \pr_t u = -\DD u - \big (Φ\ast |u|^2 \big) u \quad {in $\RR^4$},$$ where $Φ(x)$ is a perturbation of the convolution kernel $|x|^{-2}$. Despite the lack of pseudo conformal invariance for this equation, we prove the existence of critical mass finite-time blowup solutions $u(t,x)$ that exhibit the pseudo-conformal blowup rate $$ \| \nabla u(t) \|_{L^2_x} \sim \frac{1}{|t|} \quad {as} \quad t \nearrow 0 . $$ Furthermore, we prove the finite-codimensional stability of this conformal blow up, by…
We investigate the existence of ground states for the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a prototypical doubly periodic metric graph. When the nonlinearity power is below 4, ground states exist for every value of the mass, while, for every nonlinearity power between 4 (included) and 6 (excluded), a mark of $L^2$-criticality arises, as ground states exist if and only if the mass exceeds a threshold value that depends on the power. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a continuous transition from a two-dimensional regime, for which the only critical power is 4, to a one-dimensional beh…
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for all finite energy solutions to a model U(1)-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension, with the nonlinearity concentrated at a point. Our main result is that each finite energy solution converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the set of ``nonlinear eigenfunctions'' $ψ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$.
We investigate existence and asymptotic completeness of the wave operators for nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations with a defocusing exponential nonlinearity in two space dimensions. A certain threshold is defined based on the value of the conserved Hamiltonian, below which the exponential potential energy is dominated by the kinetic energy via a Trudinger-Moser type inequality. We prove that if the energy is below or equal to the critical value, then the solution approaches a free Klein-Gordon solution at the time infinity. The interesting feature in the critical case is that the…
