We study the existence of stationnary positive solutions for a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a nonnegative continuous potential V. Amongst other results, we prove that if V has a positive local minimum, and if the exponent of the nonlinearity satisfies N/(N-2)<p<(N+2)/(N-2), then for small epsilon the problem admits positive solutions which concentrate as epsilon goes to 0 around the local minimum point of V. The novelty is that no restriction is imposed on the rate of decay of V. In particular, we cover the case where V is compactly supported.
We study the existence of nonradial sign-changing solutions to the Schroedinger-Poisson system in dimension N>=3. We construct nonradial sign-changing multi-peak solutions whose peaks are displaced in suitable symmetric configurations and collapse to the same point. The proof is based on the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction.
We consider the stationary solutions for a class of Schroedinger equations with a symmetric double-well potential and a nonlinear perturbation. Here, in the semiclassical limit we prove that the reduction to a finite-mode approximation give the stationary solutions, up to an exponentially small term, and that symmetry-breaking bifurcation occurs at a given value for the strength of the nonlinear term. The kind of bifurcation picture only depends on the non-linearity power. We then discuss the stability/instability properties of each branch of the stationary solutions. Finally, we consider an e…
We consider in the whole plane the Hamiltonian coupling of semilinear Schroedinger equations which have critical growth in the sense of Moser. We prove that the (nonempty) set S of ground state solutions is compact up to translations. Moreover, ground states are uniformly bounded and uniformly decaying at infinity. Then we prove that actually the ground state is positive and radially symmetric. We apply those results to prove the existence of semiclassical ground states solutions to the singularly perturbed system when the external potential stays bounded away from zero. Namely, as the adimens…
We prove trace inequalities for a self-adjoint operator on an abstract Hilbert space. These inequalities lead to universal bounds on spectral gaps and on moments of eigenvalues lambda_k that are analogous to those known for Schroedinger operators and the Dirichlet Laplacian, on which the operators of interest are modeled. In addition we produce inequalities that are new even in the model case. These include a family of differential inequalities for generalized Riesz means and theorems stating that arithmetic means of lambda_k^p for p <= 3 are universally bounded from above by multiples of the …
We give a procedure for reconstructing a magnetic field and electric potential from boundary measurements related to the magnetic Schroedinger operator in three and higher dimensions.
In this article we study limits of Wigner distributions (the so-called semiclassical measures) corresponding to sequences of solutions to the semiclassical Schroedinger equation at times scales $α_{h}$ tending to infinity as the semiclassical parameter $h$ tends to zero (when $α_{h}=1/h$ this is equivalent to consider solutions to the non-semiclassical Schreodinger equation). Some general results are presented, among which a weak version of Egorov's theorem that holds in this setting. A complete characterization is given for the Euclidean space and Zoll manifolds (that is, manifolds with perio…
We define a Schrödinger operator on the half-space with a discontinuous magnetic field having a piecewise-constant strength and a uniform direction. Motivated by applications in the theory of superconductivity, we study the infimum of the spectrum of the operator. We give sufficient conditions on the strength and the direction of the magnetic field such that the aforementioned infimum is an eigenvalue of a reduced model operator on the half-plane. We use the Schrödinger operator on the half-space to study a new semiclassical problem in bounded domains of the space, considering a magnetic Neuma…
We study the following fractional Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*}\label{eq0.1} \varepsilon^{2s}(-Δ)^s u + V(x)u = f(u), \,\,x\in\mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $s\in(0,1)$. Under some conditions on $f(u)$, we show that the problem has a family of solutions concentrating at any finite given local minima of $V$ provided that $V\in C(\R^N,[0,+\infty))$. All decay rates of $V$ are admissible. Especially, $V$ can be compactly supported. Different from the local case $s=1$ or the case of single-peak solutions, the nonlocal effect of the operator $(-Δ)^s$ makes the peaks of the candidate s…
I derive sharp semiclassical asymptotics of \int |e_h(x,y,0)|^2ω(x,y)dxdy where e_h(x,y,τ) is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector of Magnetic Schroedinger operator and ω(x,y) is singular as x=y. I also consider asymptotics of more general expressions.
We prove existence of a special class of solutions to the (elliptic) Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation $- ε^2 Δψ+ V(x) ψ= |ψ|^{p-1} ψ$ on a manifold or in the Euclidean space. Here V represents the potential, p is an exponent greater than 1 and $ε$ a small parameter corresponding to the Planck constant. As $ε$ tends to zero (namely in the semiclassical limit) we prove existence of complex-valued solutions which concentrate along closed curves, and whose phase in highly oscillatory. Physically, these solutions carry quantum-mechanical momentum along the limit curves. In the first part of this wor…
In this paper, we study the decoherence of a wave described by the solution to a Schroedinger equation with a time-dependent random potential. The random potential is assumed to have slowly decaying correlations. The main tool to analyze the decoherence behaviors is a properly rescaled Wigner transform of the solution of the random Schroedinger equation. We exhibit anomalous wave decoherence effects at different propagation scales.
The main objective of this paper is understanding the propagation laws obeyed by high-frequency limits of Wigner distributions associated to solutions to the Schroedinger equation on the standard d-dimensional torus T^{d}. From the point of view of semiclassical analysis, our setting corresponds to performing the semiclassical limit at times of order 1/h, as the characteristic wave-length h of the initial data tends to zero. It turns out that, in spite that for fixed h every Wigner distribution satisfies a Liouville equation, their limits are no longer uniquely determined by those of the Wigne…
We consider a cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic potential. In a semiclassical scaling the nonlinear interaction of modulated pulses concentrated in one or several Bloch bands is studied. The notion of closed mode systems is introduced which allows for the rigorous derivation of a finite system of amplitude equations describing the macroscopic dynamics of these pulses.
We show that fixed energy scattering measurements for the magnetic Schroedinger operator uniquely determine the magnetic field and electric potential in dimensions $n \geq 3$. The magnetic potential, its first derivatives, and the electric potential are assumed to be exponentially decaying. This improves an earlier result of Eskin and Ralston which considered potentials with many derivatives. The proof is close to arguments in inverse boundary problems, and is based on constructing complex geometrical optics solutions to the Schroedinger equation via a pseudodifferential conjugation argument.
We prove that radial, monotonic, superexponentially decaying potentials in R^n, n greater than or equal to 1 odd, are determined by the resonances of the associated semiclassical Schrodinger operator among all superexponentially decaying potentials in R^n.
In this note, we prove weighted resolvent estimates for the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $-h^2 Δ+ V(x) : L^2(\mathbb{R}^n) \to L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $n \neq 2$. The potential $V$ is real-valued, and assumed to either decay at infinity or to obey a radial $α$-Hölder continuity condition, $0\leq α\leq 1$, with sufficient decay of the local radial $C^α$ norm toward infinity. Note, however, that in the Hölder case, the potential need \emph{not} decay. If the dimension $n \ge 3$, the resolvent bound is of the form $\exp \left(C h^{-1 - \frac{1 - α}{3 + α}} [(1-α) \log(h^{-1})+c]\right)$, while …
We consider time-dependent Schroedinger equations in one dimension with double well potential and an external nonlinear perturbation. If the initial state belongs to the eigenspace spanned by the eigenvectors associated to the two lowest eigenvalues then, in the semiclassical limit, we show that the reduction of the time-dependent equation to a 2-mode equation gives the dominant term of the solution with a precise estimate of the error. By means of this stability result we are able to prove the destruction of the beating motion for large enough nonlinearity.
We study the focusing 3d cubic NLS equation with H^1 data at the mass-energy threshold, namely, when M[u_0]E[u_0] = M[Q]E[Q]. In earlier works of Holmer-Roudenko and Duyckaerts-Holmer-Roudenko, the behavior of solutions (i.e., scattering and blow up in finite time) is classified when M[u_0]E[u_0] < M[Q]E[Q]. In this paper, we first exhibit 3 special solutions: e^{it}Q and Q^+, Q^-; here Q is the ground state, and Q^+, Q^- exponentially approach the ground state solution in the positive time direction, meanwhile Q^+ having finite time blow up and Q^- scattering in the negative time direction. S…

We study the simultaneous semi-classical and adiabatic asymptotics for a class of (weakly) nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a fast periodic potential and a slowly varying confinement potential. A rigorous two-scale WKB-analysis, locally in time, is performed. The main nonlinear phenomenon is a modification of the Berry phase.
Let u be a solution to a quasi-linear Klein-Gordon equation in one-space dimension, $\Box u + u = P (u, $\partial$\_t u, $\partial$\_x u; $\partial$\_t $\partial$\_x u, $\partial$^2\_x u)$ , where P is a homogeneous polynomial of degree three, and with smooth Cauchy data of size $ε\rightarrow 0$. It is known that, under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, the solution is global-in-time for compactly supported Cauchy data. We prove in this paper that the result holds even when data are not compactly supported but just decaying as $\langle x \rangle^ {--1}$ at infinity, combining the metho…
We construct solutions to the nonlinear magnetic Schrödinger equation $$ \left\{ \begin{aligned} - \varepsilon^2 Δ_{A/\varepsilon^2} u + V u &= \lvert u\rvert^{p-2} u & &\text{in}\ Ω,\\ u &= 0 & &\text{on}\ \partialΩ, \end{aligned} \right. $$ in the semiclassical régime with strong magnetic fields. In contrast with the well-studied mild magnetic field régime, the limiting energy depends on the magnetic field allowing to recover the Lorentz force in the semi-classical limit. Our solutions concentrate around global or local minima of a limiting energy that depends on the electric potential and t…
We consider the one dimensional focusing (cubic) Nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in the semiclassical limit with exponentially decaying complex-valued initial data, whose phase is multiplied by a real parameter. We prove smooth dependence of the asymptotic solution on the parameter. Numerical results supporting our estimates of important quantities are presented.
We study the existence of quantum resonances of the three-dimensional semiclassical Dirac operator perturbed by smooth, bounded and real-valued scalar potentials $V$ decaying like $\langle x \rangle ^{-\d}$ at infinity for some $\d >0$. By studying analytic singularities of a certain distribution related to $V$ and by combining two trace formulas, we prove that the perturbed Dirac operators possess resonances near $\sup V + 1$ and $\inf V -1$. We also provide a lower bound for the number of resonances near these points expressed in terms of the semiclassical parameter.
We consider the Wigner equation corresponding to a nonlinear Schroedinger evolution of the Hartree type in the semiclassical limit $\hbar\to 0$. Under appropriate assumptions on the initial data and the interaction potential, we show that the Wigner function is close in $L^2$ to its weak limit, the solution of the corresponding Vlasov equation. The strong approximation allows the construction of semiclassical operator-valued observables, approximating their quantum counterparts in Hilbert-Schmidt topology. The proof makes use of a pointwise-positivity manipulation, which seems necessary in wor…
We consider semiclassical Schroedinger operators on R^n, with C^\infty potentials decaying polynomially at infinity. The usual theories of resonances do not apply in such a non-analytic framework. Here, under some additional conditions, we show that resonances are invariantly defined up to any power of their imaginary part. The theory is based on resolvent estimates for families of approximating distorted operators with potentials that are holomorphic in narrow complex sectors around R^n.
We consider a semiclassical asymptotics of local trace for the 3D-Schroedinger operator with self-generated magnetic field; it is given by Weyl expression with O(h^{-1}) error and under standard condition to Hamiltonian trajectories even o(h^{-1}). In comparison to v1,2 errors are corrected, new results are added and more details are provided. Misprint correction in comparison to v3
We prove a limiting absorption principle for linear Schroedinger equations in Lebesgue spaces. In particular, we do not require any polynomially decaying weights as in the classical Agmon estimate. The methods used are close to the Stein-Tomas theorem in harmonic analysis.
In this paper we consider a one-dimensional non-linear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with a periodic potential. In the semiclassical limit we prove that the stationary solutions of the Bose-Hubbard equation approximate the stationary solutions of the (NLSE). In particular, in the limit of large nonlinearity strength the stationary solutions turn out to be localized on a single lattice site of the periodic potential; as a result the phase transition from superfluid to Mott-insulator phase for Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional periodic lattice is rigorously proved.
We prove semiclassical resolvent estimates for the Schr{ö}dinger operator in R d , d $\ge$ 3, with real-valued radial potentials V $\in$ L $\infty$ (R d). In particular, we show that if V (x) = O x --$δ$ with $δ$ > 2, then the resolvent bound is of the form e Ch --4/3 with some constant C > 0. We also get resolvent bounds when 1 < $δ$ $\le$ 2. For slowly decaying $α$-H{ö}lder potentials we get better resolvent bounds of the form e Ch --4/($α$+3) .
