We make a detailed numerical study of the spectrum of two Schroedinger operators L_- and L_+ arising in the linearization of the supercritical nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLS) about the standing wave, in three dimensions. This study was motivated by a recent result of the second author on conditional asymptotic stability of solitary waves in the case of a cubic nonlinearity. Underlying the validity of this result is a spectral condition on the operators L_- and L_+, namely that they have no eigenvalues nor resonances in the gap (a region of the positive real axis between zero and the continuous spectrum,) which we call the gap property. The present numerical study verifies this spectral condition, and further shows that the gap property holds for NLS exponents of the form 2*beta + 1, as long as beta_* < beta <= 1, where beta_* = 0.913958905 +- 1e-8. Our strategy consists of rewriting the original eigenvalue problem via the Birman-Schwinger method. From a numerical analysis viewpoint, our main contribution is an efficient quadrature rule for the kernel 1/|x-y| in R^3, i.e., provably spectrally accurate. As a result, we are able to give similar accuracy estimates for all our eigenvalue computations. We also propose an improvement of the Petviashvili's iteration for the computation of standing wave profiles which automatically chooses the radial solution.
Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with focusing power nonlinearities have solitary wave solutions. The spectra of the linearized operators around these solitary waves are intimately connected to stability properties of the solitary waves, and to the long-time dynamics of solutions of (NLS). We study these spectra in detail, both analytically and numerically.
Local exact controllability of the 1D NLS (subject to zero boundary conditions) with distributed control is shown to hold in a $H^1$--neighbourhood of the nonlinear ground state. The Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM), due to J.-L. Lions, is applied to the linear control problem that arises by linearization around the ground state. The application of HUM crucially depends on the spectral properties of the linearized NLS operator which are given in detail.
Consider a branch of unstable solitons of NLS whose linearized operators have one pair of simple real eigenvalues in addition to the zero eigenvalue. Under radial symmetry and standard assumptions, solutions to initial data from a neighbourhood of the branch either converge to a soliton, or exit a larger neighbourhood of the branch transversally. The qualitative dynamic near a branch of unstable solitons is irrespective of whether blowup eventually occurs, which has practical implications for the description of blowup of NLS with supercritical nonlinearity.
We study analytically the orbital stability of the standing waves with a peak-Gausson profile for a nonlinear logarithmic Schrödinger equation with $δ$-interaction (attractive and repulsive). A major difficulty is to compute the number of negative eigenvalues of the linearized operator around the standing wave. This is overcome by the perturbation method, the continuation arguments, and the theory of extensions of symmetric operators.
We study the modulational stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In particular, we prove that the characteristics of the quasi-linear system of equations resulting from a slow modulation approximation satisfy the same equation, up to a change in variables, as the normal form of the linearized spectrum crossing the origin. This normal form is taken from arXiv:1910.05392, where Leisman et al. compute the spectrum of the linearized operator near the origin via an analysis of Jordan chains. We derive the modulation equations using Whitham's form…
Periodic waves of the one-dimensional cubic defocusing NLS equation are considered. Using tools from integrability theory, these waves have been shown in [Bottman, Deconinck, and Nivala, 2011] to be linearly stable and the Floquet-Bloch spectrum of the linearized operator has been explicitly computed. We combine here the first four conserved quantities of the NLS equation to give a direct proof that cnoidal periodic waves are orbitally stable with respect to subharmonic perturbations, with period equal to an integer multiple of the period of the wave. Our result is not restricted to the period…
In this paper we prove the existence of quasi-periodic, small-amplitude, solutions for quasi-linear Hamiltonian perturbations of the non-linear Schroedinger equation on the torus in presence of a quasi-periodic forcing. In particular we prove that such solutions are linearly stable. The proof is based on a Nash-Moser implicit function theorem and on a reducibility result on the linearized operator in a neighborhood of zero. The proof of the reducibility relies on changes of coordinates such as diffeomorphisms of the torus, pseudo-differential operators and a KAM-reducibility arguments. Due to …
Relying upon tools from the theory of integrable systems, we discuss the linear instability of the Kuznetsov-Ma breathers and the Akhmediev breathers of the focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. We use the Darboux transformation to construct simultaneously the breathers and the exact solutions of the Lax system associated with the breathers. We obtain a full description of the Lax spectra for the two breathers, including multiplicities of eigenvalues. Solutions of the linearized NLS equations are then obtained from the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of the Lax system. While…
We study the focusing NLS equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical (or intercritical) regime, with $H^1$ data at the mass-energy threshold $ \mathcal{ME}(u_0)=\mathcal{ME}(Q)$, where $Q$ is the ground state. Previously, Duyckaerts-Merle studied the behavior of threshold solutions in the $H^1$-critical case, in dimensions $N = 3, 4, 5$, later generalized by Li-Zhang for higher dimensions. In the intercritical case, Duyckaerts-Roudenko studied the threshold problem for the 3d cubic NLS equation. In this paper, we generalize the results of Duyckaerts-Roudenko fo…
We consider non-selfadjoint operators of the kind arising in linearized NLS and prove dispersive bounds for the time-evolution without assuming that the edges of the essential spectrum are regular. Our approach does not depend on any specific properties of NLS. Rather, it is axiomatic on the linear level, and our results are obtained from four assumptions (which are of course motivated by NLS). This work is in three dimensions.

Infinite-dimensional Newton methods can be effectively used to derive numerical proofs of the existence of solutions to partial differential equations (PDEs). In computer-assisted proofs of PDEs, the original problem is transformed into the infinite Newton-type fixed point equation $w = - {\mathcal L}^{-1} {\mathcal F}(\hat{u}) + {\mathcal L}^{-1} {\mathcal G}(w)$, where ${\mathcal L}$ is a linearized operator, ${\mathcal F}(\hat{u})$ is a residual, and ${\mathcal G}(w)$ is a local Lipschitz term. Therefore, the estimations of $\| {\mathcal L}^{-1} {\mathcal F}(\hat{u}) \|$ and $\| {\mathcal L…
Generalizing similar results for viscous shock and relaxation waves, we establish sharp pointwise Green function bounds and linearized and nonlinear stability for traveling wave solutions of an abstract viscous combustion model including both Majda's model and the full reacting compressible Navier--Stokes equations with artificial viscosity with general multi-species reaction and reaction-dependent equation of state, % under the necessary conditions of strong spectral stability, i.e., stable point spectrum of the linearized operator about the wave, transversality of the profile as a connection…
Assigning boundary conditions, such as acoustic impedance, to the frequency domain thermoviscous wave equations (TWE), derived from the linearized Navier-Stokes equations (LNSE) poses a Helmholtz problem, solution to which yields a discrete set of complex eigenfunctions and eigenvalue pairs. The proposed method -- the inverse Helmholtz solver (iHS) -- reverses such procedure by returning the value of acoustic impedance at one or more unknown impedance boundaries (IBs) of a given domain, via spatial integration of the TWE for a given real-valued frequency with assigned conditions on other bound…
