We study the modulational stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In particular, we prove that the characteristics of the quasi-linear system of equations resulting from a slow modulation approximation satisfy the same equation, up to a change in variables, as the normal form of the linearized spectrum crossing the origin. This normal form is taken from arXiv:1910.05392, where Leisman et al. compute the spectrum of the linearized operator near the origin via an analysis of Jordan chains. We derive the modulation equations using Whitham's formal modulation theory, in particular the variational principle applied to an averaged Lagrangian. We use the genericity conditions assumed in the rigorous theory of Leisman et al. to direct the homogenization of the modulation equations. As a result of the agreement between the equation for the characteristics and the normal form from the linear theory, we show that the hyperbolicity of the Whitham system is a necessary condition for modulational stability of the underlying wave.
We prove that the modulational instability criterion of the formal Whitham modulation theory agrees with the spectral stability of long wavelength perturbations of periodic travelling wave solutions to the generalized Whitham equation. We use the standard WKB procedure to derive a quasi-linear system of three Whitham modulation equations, written in terms of the mass, momentum, and wave number of a periodic travelling wave solution. We use the same quantities as parameters in a rigorous spectral perturbation of the linearized operator, which allows us to track the bifurcation of the zero eigen…
In this paper, we consider the spectral stability of spatially periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation to long-wavelength perturbations. Specifically, we extend the work of Bronski and Johnson by demonstrating that the homogenized system describing the mean behavior of a slow modulation (WKB) approximation of the solution correctly describes the linearized dispersion relation near zero frequency of the linearized equations about the background periodic wave. The latter has been shown by rigorous Evans function techniques to control the spectral stability…
In this paper we prove a local well-posedness result for a class of quasi-linear systems of hyperbolic type involving Fourier multipliers. Among the physically relevant systems in this class is a family of Whitham-Boussinesq systems arising in the modeling free-surface water waves. Our result allows to prove the rigorous justification of these systems as approximations to the general water waves system on a relevant time scale, independent of the shallowness parameter.
The nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be derived as a formal approximation equation describing the envelopes of slowly modulated spatially and temporarily oscillating wave packet-like solutions to the ion Euler-Poisson equation. In this paper, we rigorously justify such approximation by giving error estimates in Sobolev norms between exact solutions of the ion Euler-Poisson system and the formal approximation obtained via the NLS equation. The justification consists of several difficulties such as the resonances and loss of regularity, due to the quasilinearity of the problem. These dif…
The focusing cubic NLS is a canonical model for the propagation of laser beams. In dimensions 2 and 3, it is known that a large class of initial data leads to finite time blow-up. Now, physical experiments suggest that this blow-up does not always occur. This might be explained by the fact that some physical phenomena neglected by the standard NLS model become relevant at large intensities of the beam. Many ad hoc variants of the focusing NLS equation have been proposed to capture such effects. In this paper, we derive some of these variants from Maxwell's equations and propose some new ones. …
We consider a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a quasilinear quadratic term. The Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be derived as a formal approximation equation describing the evolution of the envelopes of slowly modulated spatially and temporarily oscillating wave packet-like solutions to the quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation. It is the purpose of this paper to present a method which allows one to prove error estimates in Sobolev norms between exact solutions of the quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation and the formal approximation obtained via the NLS equation. The paper contains the …
The small dispersion limit of the focusing nonlinear Schroödinger equation (NLS) exhibits a rich structure of sharply separated regions exhibiting disparate rapid oscillations at microscopic scales. The non self-adjoint scattering problem and ill-posed limiting Whitham equa- tions associated to focusing NLS make rigorous asymptotic results difficult. Previous studies [KMM03, TVZ04, TVZ06] have focused on special classes of analytic initial data for which the limiting elliptic Whitham equations are well-posed. In this paper we consider another exactly solvable family of initial data, the family…
The Peregrine soliton $Q(x,t)=e^{it}(1-\frac{4(1+2it)}{1+4x^2+4t^2})$ is an exact solution of the 1d focusing nonlinear schrödinger equation (NLS) $iB_t+B_{xx}=-2|B|^2B$, having the feature that it decays to $e^{it}$ at the spatial and time infinities, and with a peak and troughs in a local region. It is considered as a prototype of the rogue waves by the ocean waves community. The 1D NLS is related to the full water wave system in the sense that asymptotically it is the envelope equation for the full water waves. In this paper, working in the framework of water waves which decay non-tangentia…
Consideration is given to three different full dispersion Boussinesq systems arising as asymptotic models in the bi-directional propagation of weakly nonlinear surface waves in shallow water. We prove that, under a non-cavitation condition on the initial data, these three systems are well-posed on a time scale of order $\mathcal{O}(\frac1\varepsilon)$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter measuring the weak non-linearity of the waves. This result seems new for one of these systems, even for short time. The two other systems involve surface tension, and for one of them, the non-cavitation c…
We consider the 2D inviscid incompressible irrotational infinite depth water wave problem neglecting surface tension. Given wave packet initial data, we show that the modulation of the solution is a profile traveling at group velocity and governed by a focusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, with rigorous error estimates in Sobolev spaces. As a consequence, we establish existence of solutions of the water wave problem in Sobolev spaces for times in the NLS regime provided the initial data is suitably close to a wave packet of sufficiently small amplitude in Sobolev spaces.
We provide the rigorous justification of the NLS approximation, in Sobolev regularity, for a class of quasilinear Hamiltonian Klein Gordon equations with quadratic nonlinearities on large one-dimensional tori $\T_L:=\mathbb{R}/(2πL \mathbb{Z})$, $L\gg 1$. We prove the validity of this approximation over a \emph{long-time} scale, meaning that it holds beyond the cubic nonlinear time scale. To achieve this result we need to perform a second-order analysis and deal with higher order resonant wave-interactions. The main difficulties are provided by the quasi-linear nature of the problem and the pr…
We consider small amplitude wave packet-like solutions to the 3D inviscid incompressible irrotational infinite depth water wave problem neglecting surface tension. Formal multiscale calculations suggest that the modulation of such a solution is described by a profile traveling at group velocity and governed by a hyperbolic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In this paper we show that, given wave packet initial data, the corresponding solution exists and retains the form of a wave packet on natural NLS time scales. Moreover, we give rigorous error estimates between the true and formal soluti…
We consider a scaling limit of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a nonlocal nonlinearity showing that it reproduces in the limit of cutoff removal a NLS equation with nonlinearity concentrated at a point. The regularized dynamics is described by the equation \begin{equation*} i\frac{\partial }{\partial t} ψ^\varepsilon(t)= -Δψ^\varepsilon(t) + g(\varepsilon,μ,|(ρ^\varepsilon,ψ^\varepsilon(t))|^{2μ}) (ρ^\varepsilon,ψ^\varepsilon(t)) ρ^\varepsilon \end{equation*} where $ρ^{\varepsilon} \to δ_0$ weakly and the function $g$ embodies the nonlinearity and the scaling and has to be fine tun…
This paper completes the program started in arXiv:2104.11204 and arXiv:2110.04565 aiming at providing a full rigorous justification of the wave kinetic theory for the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. Here, we cover the full range of scaling laws for the NLS on an arbitrary periodic rectangular box, and derive the wave kinetic equation up to small multiples of the kinetic time. The proof is based on a diagrammatic expansion and a deep analysis of the resulting Feynman diagrams. The main novelties of this work are three-fold: (1) we present a robust way to identify arbitrarily large "bad" d…
We study the concentrated NLS on ${\mathbf R^n}$, with power non-linearities, driven by the fractional Laplacian, $(-Δ)^s, s>\frac{n}{2}$. We construct the solitary waves explicitly, in an optimal range of the parameters, so that they belong to the natural energy space $H^s$. Next, we provide a complete classification of their spectral stability. Finally, we show that the waves are non-degenerate and consequently orbitally stable, whenever they are spectrally stable. Incidentally, our construction shows that the soliton profiles for the concentrated NLS are in fact exact minimizers of the Sobo…
We review here the derivation of many of the most important models that appear in the literature (mainly in coastal oceanography) for the description of waves in shallow water. We show that these models can be obtained using various asymptotic expansions of the "turbulent" and non-hydrostatic terms that appear in the equations that result from the vertical integration of the free surface Euler equations. Among these models are the well-known nonlinear shallow water (NSW), Boussinesq and Serre-Green-Naghdi (SGN) equations for which we review several pending open problems. More recent models suc…
We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah…
This manuscript continues and extends in various directions the result in arXiv:2104.11204, which gave a full derivation of the wave kinetic equation (WKE) from the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in dimensions $d\geq 3$. The wave kinetic equation describes the effective dynamics of the second moments of the Fourier modes of the NLS solution at the kinetic timescale, and in the kinetic limit in which the size of the system diverges to infinity and the strength of the nonlinearity vanishes asymptotically according to a specified scaling law. Here, we investigate the behavior of the joint d…
