We review here the derivation of many of the most important models that appear in the literature (mainly in coastal oceanography) for the description of waves in shallow water. We show that these models can be obtained using various asymptotic expansions of the "turbulent" and non-hydrostatic terms that appear in the equations that result from the vertical integration of the free surface Euler equations. Among these models are the well-known nonlinear shallow water (NSW), Boussinesq and Serre-Green-Naghdi (SGN) equations for which we review several pending open problems. More recent models such as the multi-layer NSW or SGN systems, as well as the Isobe-Kakinuma equations are also reviewed under a unified formalism that should simplify comparisons. We also comment on the scalar versions of the various shallow water systems which can be used to describe unidirectional waves in horizontal dimension $d=1$; among them are the KdV, BBM, Camassa-Holm and Whitham equations. Finally, we show how to take vorticity effects into account in shallow water modeling, with specific focus on the behavior of the turbulent terms. As examples of challenges that go beyond the present scope of mathematical justification, we review recent works using shallow water models with vorticity to describe wave breaking, and also derive models for the propagation of shallow water waves over strong currents.
In this paper, we shall implement KAM theory in order to construct a large class of time quasi-periodic solutions for an active scalar model arising in fluid dynamics. More precisely, the construction of invariant tori is performed for quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations when the {\it Rossby deformation length} belongs to a massive Cantor set. As a consequence, we construct pulsating vortex patches whose boundary is localized in a thin annulus for any time.
In this study, we propose an improved version of the nonlinear shallow water (or Saint-Venant) equations. This new model is designed to take into account the effects resulting from the large spacial and/or temporal variations of the seabed. The model is derived from a variational principle by choosing the appropriate shallow water ansatz and imposing suitable constraints. Thus, the derivation procedure does not explicitly involve any small parameter.
In this paper, we consider a family of piecewise constant solutions of the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equation. We derive the contour dynamics equation of the QGSW front, which is a nonlinear, nonlocal dispersive equation, and prove the global existence of the solutions when the initial data is sufficiently close to a flat front.

We prove the local well-posedness for a nonlinear equation modeling the evolution of the free surface for waves of moderate amplitude in the shallow water regime.
Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a de…
Lie symmetry analysis is applied to study the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations. The 9-dimensional Lie algebra of point symmetries admitted by the model is found. It is shown that the rotating shallow water equations are related with the classical shallow water model with the change of variables. The derived symmetries are used to generate new exact solutions of the rotating shallow equations. In particular, a new class of time-periodic solutions with quasi-closed particle trajectories is constructed and studied. The symmetry reduction method is also used to obtain some invariant solu…
For propagation of surface shallow-water waves on irrotational flows, we derive a new two-component system. The system is obtained by a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism. The system has a non-canonical Hamiltonian formulation. We also find its exact solitary-wave solutions.
Following a general principle introduced by Ehrnström et.al. we prove that for an equation modeling the free surface evolution of moderate amplitude waves in shallow water, all symmetric waves are traveling waves.
We prove wave breaking --- bounded solutions with unbounded derivatives --- in the nonlinear nonlocal equations which combine the dispersion relation of water waves and the nonlinear shallow water equations, and which generalize the Whitham equation to permit bidirectional wave propagation, provided that the slope of the initial data is sufficiently negative.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional free surface equation of shallow water wave, we obtain local well-posedness of the free surface equation of shallow water wave in Sobolev spaces. In addition, we also derive a wave-breaking mechanism for strong solutions.
In this paper we consider the initial value problem for a family of shallow water equations on the line $\R$ with various asymptotic conditions at infinity. In particular we construct solutions with prescribed asymptotic expansion as $x\to\pm\infty$ and prove their invariance with respect to the solution map.
In this paper, we prove the existence of relative equilibria with holes for quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations. More precisely, using bifurcation techniques, we establish for any m large enough the existence of two branches of m-fold doubly-connected V-states bifurcating from any annulus of arbitrary size.
In this article we consider the inviscid two-dimensional shallow water equations in a rectangle. The flow occurs near a stationary solution in the so called supercritical regime and we establish short term existence of smooth solutions for the corresponding initial and boundary value problem.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the 2D viscous shallow water equations with low regularity assumptions on the initial data as well as the initial height bounded away from zero.
We revise the symmetry analysis of a modified system of one-dimensional shallow-water equations (MSWE) recently considered by Raja Sekhar and Sharma [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat. 20 (2012) 630-636]. Only a finite dimensional subalgebra of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of the MSWE, which in fact is infinite dimensional, was found in the aforementioned paper. The MSWE can be linearized using a hodograph transformation. An optimal list of inequivalent one-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra is constructed and used for Lie reductions. Non-Lie solutions are …
In this paper, we prove that the 2D viscous shallow water equations is ill-posed in the critical Besov spaces $\B^{\frac2p-1}_{p,1}(\R^2)$ with $p>4$. Our proof mainly depends on the method introduced by the paper \cite{C-M-Z4}.
We study the modulational instability of a shallow water model, with and without surface tension, which generalizes the Whitham equation to include bi-directional propagation. Without surface tension, the small amplitude periodic traveling waves are modulationally unstable if their wave number is greater than a critical wave number predicting a Benjamin-Feir type instability and the result qualitatively agrees with the shallow water model in [HP16]. With surface tension, the result qualitatively agrees with the physical problem except for the large surface tension limit which is accurately pre…
In order to improve the frequency dispersion effects of irrotational shallow water models in coastal oceanography, several full dispersion versions of classical models were formally derived in the literature. The idea, coming from G. Whitham in [21], was to modify them so that their dispersion relation is the same as the water waves equations. In this paper we construct new shallow water approximations of the velocity potential then deducing ones on the vertically averaged horizontal component of the velocity. We make use of them to derive rigorously from the water waves equations two new Hami…
Steady vortices for the three-dimensional Euler equation for inviscid incompressible flows and for the shallow water equation are constructed and showed to tend asymptotically to singular vortex filaments. The construction is based on the asymptotic study of solutions to a semilinear elliptic problem.
We derive the Whitham equations from the water waves equations in the shallow water regime using two different methods, thus obtaining a direct and rigorous link between these two models. The first one is based on the construction of approximate Riemann invariants for a Whitham-Boussinesq system and is adapted to unidirectional waves. The second one is based on a generalisation of Birkhoff's normal form algorithm for almost smooth Hamiltonians and is adapted to bidirectional propagation. In both cases we clarify the improved accuracy on the fully dispersive Whitham model with respect to the lo…
Considered herein is the integrable two-component Camassa-Holm shallow water system derived in the context of shallow water theory, which admits blow-up solutions and the solitary waves interacting like solitons. Using modulation theory, and combining the almost monotonicity of a local version of energy with the argument on the stability of a single solitary wave, we prove that the train of $N$ solitary waves, which are sufficiently decoupled, is orbitally stable in the energy space $H^1(\R)\times L^2(\R)$.
In this paper we prove that weak solutions to the Diffusive Wave Approximation of the Shallow Water equations $$ \partial_t u - \nabla\cdot ((u-z)^α|\nabla u|^{γ-1}\nabla u) = f $$ are locally bounded. Here, $u$ describes the height of the water, $z$ is a given function that represents the land elevation and $f$ is a source term accounting for evaporation, infiltration or rainfall.
In this paper, we investigate the formation of singularity for general two dimensional and radially symmetric solutions for rotating shallow water system from different aspects. First, the formation of singularity is proved via the study for the associated moments for two dimensional solutions. For the radial symmetric solutions, the formation of singularity is established for the initial data with compact support. Finally, the global existence or formation of singularity for the radial symmetric solutions of the rotating shallow water system are analyzed in detail when the solutions are of th…
In this paper we derive a new formulation of the water waves equations with vorticity that generalizes the well-known Zalkarov-Craig-Sulem formulation used in the irrotational case. We prove the local well-posedness of this formulation, and show that it is formally Hamiltonian. This new for- mulation is cast in Eulerian variable, and in finite depth; we show that it can be used to provide uniform bounds on the lifespan and on the norms of the solutions in the singular shallow water regime. As an application to these re- sults, we derive and provide the first rigorous justification of a shallow…
We present a geometrical demonstration for persistence properties for a bi-Hamiltonian system modelling waves in a shallow water regime. Both periodic and non-periodic cases are considered and a key ingredient in our approach is one of the Hamiltonians of the system. As a consequence of our developments we improve recent works dealing with unique continuation properties for shallow water equations, as well as we provide a novel way to prove that the unique compactly supported solution of the system is necessarily the zero function.
We consider the linearized 2D inviscid shallow water equations in a rectangle. A set of boundary conditions is proposed which make these equations well-posed. Several different cases occur depending on the relative values of the reference velocities $(u_0,v_0)$ and reference height $ϕ_0$ (sub- or super-critical flow at each part of the boundary).
The group properties of the shallow-water equations with the complete Coriolis force is the subject of this study. In particular we apply the Lie theory to classify the system of three nonlinear partial differential equations according to the admitted Lie point symmetries. For each case of the classification problem the one-dimensional optimal system is determined. The results are applied for the derivation of new similarity solutions.
For an integrable shallow water equation we describe a geometrical approach showing that any two nearby fluid configurations are successive states of a unique flow minimizing the kinetic energy.
We study the local well-posedness of a periodic nonlinear equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude in shallow water. We use an approach due to Kato which is based on semigroup theory for quasi-linear equations. We also show that singularities for the model equation can occur only in the form of wave breaking, in particular surging breakers.
This is a study of the Euler equations for free surface water waves in the case of varying bathymetry, considering the problem in the shallow water scaling regime. In the case of rapidly varying periodic bottom boundaries this is a problem of homogenization theory. In this setting we derive a new model system of equations, consisting of the classical shallow water equations coupled with nonlocal evolution equations for a periodic corrector term. We also exhibit a new resonance phenomenon between surface waves and a periodic bottom. This resonance, which gives rise to secular growth of surface …
In this note, we show the existence of regular solutions to the stationary version of the Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids with a density dependent viscosity, known as the shallow water equations. For arbitrary large forcing we are able to construct a solution, provided the total mass is sufficiently large. The main mathematical part is located in the construction of solutions. Uniqueness is impossible to obtain, since the gradient of the velocity is of magnitude of the force. The investigation is connected to the corresponding singular limit as Mach number goes to zero and methods…
We modify the nonlinear shallow water equations, the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the Whitham equation, to permit constant vorticity, and examine wave breaking, or the lack thereof. By wave breaking, we mean that the solution remains bounded but its slope becomes unbounded in finite time. We show that a solution of the vorticity-modified shallow water equations breaks if it carries an increase of elevation; the breaking time decreases to zero as the size of vorticity increases. We propose a full-dispersion shallow water model, which combines the dispersion relation of water waves and the no…
In this paper, we address the question of the hyperbolicity and the local well- posedness of the multi-layer shallow water model, with free surface, in two dimensions. We first provide a general criterion that proves the symmetrizability of this model, which implies hyperbolicity and local well-posedness in H^s(R^2), with s > 2. Then, we analyze rigorously the eigenstructure associated to this model and prove a more general criterion of hyperbolicity and local well-posedness, under a particular asymptotic regime and a weak stratification assumptions of the densities and the velocities. Finally…
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear orbital stability of vortex dipoles for the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equations. The vortex dipoles are explicit travelling wave solutions to the QGSW equations, which are analogues of the classical circular vortex of Lamb and Chaplygin for the steady planar Euler equations. We establish a variational characterization of these vortex poles, which provides a basis for the stability result.
The failure of uniform dependence on the data is an interesting property of classical solution for a hyperbolic system. In this paper, we consider the solution map of the Cauchy problem to the 2D viscous shallow water equations which is a hyperbolic-parabolic system. We prove that the solution map of this problem is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s\times H^{s}$ for $s>2$.
In this paper, an exact smooth solution for the equations modeling the bedload transport of sediment in Shallow Water is presented. This solution is valid for a large family of sedimentation laws which are widely used in erosion modeling such as the Grass model or those of Meyer-Peter & Muller. One of the main interest of this solution is the derivation of numerical benchmarks to valid the approximation methods.
In this paper, we investigate steady states of shallow water moment equations including bottom topographies. We derive a new hyperbolic shallow water moment model based on linearized moment equations that allows for a simple assessment of the steady states. After proving hyperbolicity of the new model, the steady states are fully identified. A well-balanced scheme is adopted to the specific structure of the new model and allows to preserve the steady states in numerical simulations.
In this article we address some issues related to the initial value problems for a rotating shallow water hyperbolic system of equations and the diffusive regularization of this system. For initial data close to the solution at rest, we establish the local existence and the uniqueness of a solution to the hyperbolic system, as well as the global existence of a solution to the regularized system. In order to prove this, we use suitable variables that symmetrize the system.
In this paper, we mainly consider the Gevrey regularity and analyticity of the solution to a generalized two-component shallow water wave system with higher-order inertia operators, namely, $m=(1-\partial_x^2)^su$ with $s>1$. Firstly, we obtain the Gevrey regularity and analyticity for a short time. Secondly, we show the continuity of the data-to-solution map. Finally, we prove the global Gevrey regularity and analyticity in time.
We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space $H^s$ on the circle for $s>3/2$.
This paper is devoted to the extension of the recently proposed conditional symmetry method to first order nonhomogeneous quasilinear systems which are equivalent to homogeneous systems through a locally invertible point transformation. We perform a systematic analysis of the rank-1 and rank-2 solutions admitted by the shallow water wave equations in (2 + 1) dimensions and construct the corresponding solutions of the rotating shallow water wave equations. These solutions involve in general arbitrary functions depending on Riemann invariants, which allow us to construct new interesting classes …
In this paper, we adress the question of the hyperbolicity and the local well-posedness of the two-layer shallow water model, with free surface, in two dimensions. We first provide a general criterion that proves the symmetrizability of this model, which implies hyperbolicity and local well-posedness in $\mathcal{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, with s>2. Then, we analyze rigorously the eigenstructure associated to this model and prove a more general criterion of hyperbolicity and local well-posedness, under weak density-stratification assumption. Finally, we consider a new conservative two-layer shallow …
We consider the two-dimensional shallow water model derived by Levermore and Sammartino (Nonlinearity 14,2001), describing the motion of an incompressible fluid, confined in a shallow basin, with varying bottom topography. We construct the approximate inertial manifolds for the associated dynamical system and estimate its order. Finally, considering the whole domain R^2 and under suitable conditions on the time dependent forcing term, we prove the L^2 asymptotic decay of the weak solutions.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for a higher order shallow water type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}-u_{txx}+\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u-\partial_{x}^{2j+3}u+3uu_{x}-2u_{x}u_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0, \end{eqnarray*} where $x\in \mathbf{T}=\mathbf{R}/2π$ and $j\in N^{+}.$ Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -\frac{j-2}{2}$ for arbitrary initial data. By using the $I$-method, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $…
We study for the Richard-Gavrilyuk model of inclined shallow water flow, an extension of the classical Saint Venant equations incorporating vorticity, the new feature of convective-wave solutions analogous to contact discontinuitis in inviscid conservation laws. These are traveling waves for which fluid velocity is constant and equal to the speed of propagation of the wave, but fluid height and/or enstrophy (thus vorticity) varies. Together with hydraulic shocks, they play an important role in the structure of Riemann solutions.
We are interested in asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves at the interface between two shallow layers of immiscible fluid, under the rigid-lid assumption. We review and complete existing works in the literature, in order to offer a unified and comprehensive exposition. Anterior models such as the shallow water and Boussinesq systems, as well as unidirectional models of Camassa-Holm type, are shown to descend from a broad Green-Naghdi model, that we introduce and justify in the sense of consistency. Contrarily to earlier works, our Green-Naghdi model allows a non-flat topogra…
In this paper, we consider the solution map of the initial value problem to the two-component Camassa-Holm equation on the line. We prove that the solution map of this problem is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)\times H^{s-1}(\R)$ for $s>3/2$.
We consider the Cacuhy problem for a viscous compressible rotating shallow water system with a third-order surface-tension term involved, derived recently in the modelling of motions for shallow water with free surface in a rotating sub-domain. The global existence of the solution in the space of Besov type is shown for initial data close to a constant equilibrium state away from the vacuum. Unlike the previous analysis about the compressible fluid model without coriolis forces, the rotating effect causes a coupling between two parts of Hodge's decomposition of the velocity vector field, addit…
The hillslope hydrological processes are very important in watershed hydrology research. In this paper we focus on the water flow over the soil surface with vegetation in a hydrographic basin. We introduce a PDE model based on general principles of fluid mechanics where the unknowns are water depth and water velocity. The influence of the plant cover to the water dynamics is given by porosity (a quantity related to the density of the vegetation), which is a function defined over the hydrological basin. Using finite volume method for approximating the spatial derivatives, we build an ODE system…
The present work is devoted to the derivation of a fully well-balanced and positivepreserving numerical scheme for the shallow water equations with Coriolis force. The first main issue consists in preserving all the steady states, including the geostrophic equilibrium. Our strategy relies on a Godunov-type scheme with suitable source term and steady state discretisations. The second challenge lies in improving the order of the scheme while preserving the fully well-balanced property. A modification of the classical methods is required since no conservative reconstruction can preserve all the s…
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. We first prove the local well-posedness of this problem by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition, and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then, we get the global existence of the system with small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. Our obtained result improves the recent result in \cite{W}
The purpose of this paper is to derive rigorously the so called viscous shallow water equations given for instance page 958-959 in [A. Oron, S.H. Davis, S.G. Bankoff, Rev. Mod. Phys, 69 (1997), 931?980]. Such a system of equations is similar to compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with a non-constant viscosity. To do that, we consider a layer of incompressible and Newtonian fluid which is relatively thin, assuming no surface tension at the free surface. The motion of the fluid is described by 3d Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and free surface. We prove t…
We study local-time well-posedness and breakdown for solutions of regularized Saint-Venant equations (regularized classical shallow water equations) recently introduced by Clamond and Dutykh. The system is linearly non-dispersive, and smooth solutions conserve an $H^1$-equivalent energy. No shock discontinuities can occur, but the system is known to admit weakly singular shock-profile solutions that dissipate energy. We identify a class of small-energy smooth solutions that develop singularities in the first derivatives in finite time.
