The group properties of the shallow-water equations with the complete Coriolis force is the subject of this study. In particular we apply the Lie theory to classify the system of three nonlinear partial differential equations according to the admitted Lie point symmetries. For each case of the classification problem the one-dimensional optimal system is determined. The results are applied for the derivation of new similarity solutions.
Lie symmetry analysis is applied to study the nonlinear rotating shallow water equations. The 9-dimensional Lie algebra of point symmetries admitted by the model is found. It is shown that the rotating shallow water equations are related with the classical shallow water model with the change of variables. The derived symmetries are used to generate new exact solutions of the rotating shallow equations. In particular, a new class of time-periodic solutions with quasi-closed particle trajectories is constructed and studied. The symmetry reduction method is also used to obtain some invariant solu…
For propagation of surface shallow-water waves on irrotational flows, we derive a new two-component system. The system is obtained by a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism. The system has a non-canonical Hamiltonian formulation. We also find its exact solitary-wave solutions.
We present a geometrical demonstration for persistence properties for a bi-Hamiltonian system modelling waves in a shallow water regime. Both periodic and non-periodic cases are considered and a key ingredient in our approach is one of the Hamiltonians of the system. As a consequence of our developments we improve recent works dealing with unique continuation properties for shallow water equations, as well as we provide a novel way to prove that the unique compactly supported solution of the system is necessarily the zero function.
We modify the nonlinear shallow water equations, the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the Whitham equation, to permit constant vorticity, and examine wave breaking, or the lack thereof. By wave breaking, we mean that the solution remains bounded but its slope becomes unbounded in finite time. We show that a solution of the vorticity-modified shallow water equations breaks if it carries an increase of elevation; the breaking time decreases to zero as the size of vorticity increases. We propose a full-dispersion shallow water model, which combines the dispersion relation of water waves and the no…
For an integrable shallow water equation we describe a geometrical approach showing that any two nearby fluid configurations are successive states of a unique flow minimizing the kinetic energy.
Partially invariant solution to (2+1)D shallow water equation is constructed and investigated. The solution describes an extension of a stripe, bounded by linear source and drain of fluid. Realizations of smooth flow and of hydraulic jump are possible. Particle trajectories and sonic characteristics on the obtained solution are calculated.
This paper is devoted to the extension of the recently proposed conditional symmetry method to first order nonhomogeneous quasilinear systems which are equivalent to homogeneous systems through a locally invertible point transformation. We perform a systematic analysis of the rank-1 and rank-2 solutions admitted by the shallow water wave equations in (2 + 1) dimensions and construct the corresponding solutions of the rotating shallow water wave equations. These solutions involve in general arbitrary functions depending on Riemann invariants, which allow us to construct new interesting classes …
In this paper, we adress the question of the hyperbolicity and the local well-posedness of the two-layer shallow water model, with free surface, in two dimensions. We first provide a general criterion that proves the symmetrizability of this model, which implies hyperbolicity and local well-posedness in $\mathcal{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, with s>2. Then, we analyze rigorously the eigenstructure associated to this model and prove a more general criterion of hyperbolicity and local well-posedness, under weak density-stratification assumption. Finally, we consider a new conservative two-layer shallow …
The modulation equations for Stokes waves in shallow water coupled to wave generated mean flow, derived in Whitham (1967), based on an averaged Lagrangian are revisited. Firstly, it is shown that they can be recast into two coupled classical shallow water equations, with modified gravity having the sign of the Whitham index: sign($ω_0'' ω_2$). Secondly, it is shown that the amplitude of the mean flow and amplitude of the wave are, in general, independent. Thirdly, the implications of the coalescing characteristics, whose unfolding is associated with the Benjamin-Feir instability, are studied.
The two-dimensional shallow water equations with a particular bottom and the Coriolis's force $f=f_{0}+Ωy$ are studied in this paper. The main goal of the paper is to describe all invariant solutions for which the reduced system is a system of ordinary differential equations. For solving the systems of ordinary differential equations we use the sixth-order Runge-Kutta method.
In our paper we show that the Camassa-Holm equation does not represent a long wave asymptotic due to a major inconsistency with the theory of shallow water waves. We state that any solution of the Camassa-Holm equation, which is not asymptotically close to a solution of the Korteweg--de Vries equation is an artefact of the model and irrelevant to the theory of shallow water waves.
We describe the physical hypothesis in which an approximate model of water waves is obtained. For an irrotational unidirectional shallow water flow, we derive the Camassa-Holm equation by a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism.
This gives a survey of our recent studies on soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with an emphasis on the Mach reflection problem in shallow water.
We revise the symmetry analysis of a modified system of one-dimensional shallow-water equations (MSWE) recently considered by Raja Sekhar and Sharma [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat. 20 (2012) 630-636]. Only a finite dimensional subalgebra of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of the MSWE, which in fact is infinite dimensional, was found in the aforementioned paper. The MSWE can be linearized using a hodograph transformation. An optimal list of inequivalent one-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra is constructed and used for Lie reductions. Non-Lie solutions are …
A basic shallow water system with variable topography is analyzed from the point of view of a Lagrangian derivation of momentum, energy, and pseudomomentum balances. A two-dimensional action and associated momentum equation are derived. The latter is further manipulated to derive additional equations for energy and pseudomomentum. This revealed structure emphasizes broken symmetries in space and a reference configuration, and preserved symmetry in time.
We investigate the particle trajectories in an irrotational shallow water flow over a flat bed as periodic waves propagate on the water's free surface. Within the linear water wave theory, we show that there are no closed orbits for the water particles beneath the irrotational shallow water waves. Depending on the strength of underlying uniform current, we obtain that some particle trajectories are undulating path to the right or to the left, some are looping curves with a drift to the right and others are parabolic curves or curves which have only one loop.
We investigate the particle trajectories in a constant vorticity shallow water flow over a flat bed as periodic waves propagate on the water's free surface. Within the framework of small amplitude waves, we find the solutions of the nonlinear differential equations system which describes the particle motion in the considered case, and we describe the possible particle trajectories. Depending on the relation between the initial data and the constant vorticity, some particle trajectories are undulating curves to the right, or to the left, others are loops with forward drift, or with backward dri…
The Riemann problem of one dimensional shallow water equations with discontinuous topography has been constructed recently. The elementary waves include shock waves, rarefaction waves, and the stationary wave. The stationary wave appears when the water depth changes, especially when there exists a bottom step. In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the interaction between a stationary wave with either a shock wave or a rarefaction wave. By using the characteristic analysis methods, the evolution of waves is described during the interaction process. The solution in large time scale is also…
We describe the physical hypotheses underlying the derivation of an approximate model of water waves. For unidirectional surface shallow water waves moving over an irrotational flow as well as over a non-zero vorticity flow, we derive the Camassa-Holm equation by an interplay of variational methods and small-parameter expansions.
The Euler-Poincaré differential (EPDiff) equations and the shallow water (SW) equations share similar wave characteristics. Using the Hamiltonian structure of the SW equations with flat bottom topography, we establish a connection between the EPDiff equations and the SW equations in one and multi-dimensions. Additionally, we show that the EPDiff equations can be recast in a curl formulation.
We carry out the group classification of the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The equivalence group of this class is found by the algebraic method. Using algebraic techniques, we construct additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of Lie-symmetry extensions, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group.
By a variational approach in the Lagrangian formalism, we derive the nonlinear integrable two-component Camassa-Holm system (1). We show that the two-component Camassa-Holm system (1) with the plus sign arises as an approximation to the Euler equations of hydrodynamics for propagation of irrotational shallow water waves over a flat bed. The Lagrangian used in the variational derivation is not a metric.
The current work investigates the soliton solutions of the Kaup-Boussinesq equation using the Inverse Scattering Transform method. We outline the construction of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for a pair energy-dependent spectral problems for the system, which we then use to construct the solution of this hydrodynamic system.
In this paper we demonstrate a connection between the roots of a certain sequence of orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the linear instability of a $x$-directionally homogeneous background velocity profile $u^b(x,y) = \cos(y)$ in the quasi-geostrophic shallow water (QG) equation in a domain with periodic boundaries in the $y$-direction. Using the relationship we establish, we then prove that there exists a unique unstable mode for each horizontal wave number $0<k<1$ and provide mathematically rigorous estimates of the associated growth rate.
This paper is a survey article on bi-Hamiltonian systems on the dual of the Lie algebra of vector fields on the circle. We investigate the special case where one of the structures is the canonical Lie-Poisson structure and the second one is constant. These structures called affine or modified Lie-Poisson structures are involved in the integrability of certain Euler equations that arise as models of shallow water waves.
We prove Maslov's conjecture that the structure of the type of square root of a quadratic form is the unique structure of weakly singular solutions (with a point singularity) of the shallow water equations with the properties of asymptotic self-similarity and stability. This fact plays a key role in the study of the dynamics of vortical singularities and their applications to the description of typhoon trajectories.
In this paper we propose a numerical Riemann problem solver at the junction of one dimensional shallow-water canal networks. The junction conditions take into account the angles with which the channels intersect and include the possibility of canals with different sections. The solver is illustrated with several numerical tests which underline the importance of the angle dependence to obtain reliable solutions.
Zero curvature formulations, pseudo-potentials, modified versions, ``Miura transformations'', and nonlocal symmetries of the Korteweg--de Vries, Camassa-- Holm and Hunter--Saxton equations are investigated from an unified point of view: these three equations belong to a two--parameters family of equations ``describing pseudo-spherical surfaces'', and therefore their basic integrability properties can be studied by geometrical means.
