In this paper, we shall implement KAM theory in order to construct a large class of time quasi-periodic solutions for an active scalar model arising in fluid dynamics. More precisely, the construction of invariant tori is performed for quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations when the {\it Rossby deformation length} belongs to a massive Cantor set. As a consequence, we construct pulsating vortex patches whose boundary is localized in a thin annulus for any time.
In this paper, we consider a family of piecewise constant solutions of the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equation. We derive the contour dynamics equation of the QGSW front, which is a nonlinear, nonlocal dispersive equation, and prove the global existence of the solutions when the initial data is sufficiently close to a flat front.
In this paper, we prove the existence of relative equilibria with holes for quasi-geostrophic shallow-water equations. More precisely, using bifurcation techniques, we establish for any m large enough the existence of two branches of m-fold doubly-connected V-states bifurcating from any annulus of arbitrary size.
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear orbital stability of vortex dipoles for the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equations. The vortex dipoles are explicit travelling wave solutions to the QGSW equations, which are analogues of the classical circular vortex of Lamb and Chaplygin for the steady planar Euler equations. We establish a variational characterization of these vortex poles, which provides a basis for the stability result.
We provide a variational construction of special solutions to the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations. These solutions take the form of N vortex patches with N-fold symmetry , which are steady in a uniformly rotating frame. Moreover, we investigate their asymptotic properties when the size of the corresponding patches vanishes. In this limit, we prove these solutions to be a desingularization of N Dirac masses with the same intensity, located on the N vertices of a regular polygon rotating at a constant angular velocity.
We study analytical and numerical aspects of the bifurcation diagram of simply-connected rotating vortex patch equilibria for the quasi-geostrophic shallow-water (QGSW) equations. The QGSW equations are a generalisation of the Euler equations and contain an additional parameter, the Rossby deformation length $\EE^{-1}$, which enters in the relation between streamfunction and (potential) vorticity. The Euler equations are recovered in the limit $\EE\to 0$. We prove, close to circular (Rankine) vortices, the persistence of the bifurcation diagram for arbitrary Rossby deformation length. However …
We study the existence of doubly connected rotating patches for the inviscid surface quasi- geostrophic equation left open in \cite{HHH}. By using the approach proposed by \cite{CCGS} we also prove that close to the annulus the boundaries are actually analytic curves.
We prove short time existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions ( in $C^{k+2,α}$ with $k\geq 2$) to the 2-D semi-geostrophic system and semi-geostrophic shallow water system with variable Coriolis parameter $f$ and periodic boundary conditions, under the natural convexity condition on the initial data. The dual space used in analysis of the semi-geostrophic system with constant $f$ does not exist for the variable Coriolis parameter case, and we develop a time-stepping procedure to overcome this difficulty.
In this paper, we construct time periodic doubly connected solutions for the 3D quasi-geostrophic model in the patch setting. More specifically, we prove the existence of nontrivial $m$-fold doubly connected rotating patches bifurcating from a generic doubly connected revolution shape domain with higher symmetry $m\geq m_0$ and $m_0$ is large enough. The linearized matrix operator at the equilibrium state is with variable and singular coefficients and its spectral analysis is performed via the approach devised in [27] where a suitable symmetrization has been introduced. New difficulties emerge…
We study patch solutions of a family of transport equations given by a parameter $α$, $0< α<2$, with the cases $α=0$ and $α=1$ corresponding to the Euler and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations respectively. In this paper, using several new cancellations, we provide the following new results. First, we prove local well-posedness for $H^{2}$ patches in the half-space setting for $0<α< 1/3$, allowing self-intersection with the fixed boundary. Furthermore, we are able to extend the range of $α$ for which finite time singularities have been shown in \cite{KYZ} and \cite{KRYZ}. Second, we estab…
This paper aims to study time periodic solutions for 3D inviscid quasi-geostrophic model. We show the existence of non trivial rotating patches by suitable perturbation of stationary solutions given by generic revolution shapes around the vertical axis. The construction of those special solutions are done through bifurcation theory. In general, the spectral problem is very delicate and strongly depends on the shape of the initial stationary solutions. More specifically, the spectral study can be related to an eigenvalue problem of a self-adjoint compact operator. We are able to implement the b…
By applying implicit function theorem on contour dynamics, we prove the existence of co-rotating and travelling patch solutions for both Euler and the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The solutions obtained constitute a desingularization of points vortices when the size of patch support vanishes. In particular, solutions constructed in this paper consist of doubly connected components, which is essentially different from all known results.
This paper aims to study the existence of asymmetric solutions for the two-dimensional generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equations of simply connected patches for $α\in[1,2)$ in the whole plane, where $α=1$ corresponds to the surface quasi-geostrophic equations (SQG). More precisely, we construct non-trivial simply connected co-rotating and traveling patches with unequal vorticity magnitudes. The proof is carried out by means of a combination of a desingularization argument with the implicit function theorem on the linearization of contour dynamics equation. Our results extend recen…
In this paper we address the existence of time periodic solutions for the generalized inviscid SQG equation in the unit disc with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition when $α\in (0,1)$. We show the existence of a countable family of bifurcating curves from the radial patches. In contrast with the preceding studies in active scalar equations, the Green function is no longer explicit and we circumvent this issue by a suitable splitting into a singular explicit part (which coincides with the planar one) and a smooth implicit one induced by the boundary of the domain. Another problem is connec…
The present work is devoted to the derivation of a fully well-balanced and positivepreserving numerical scheme for the shallow water equations with Coriolis force. The first main issue consists in preserving all the steady states, including the geostrophic equilibrium. Our strategy relies on a Godunov-type scheme with suitable source term and steady state discretisations. The second challenge lies in improving the order of the scheme while preserving the fully well-balanced property. A modification of the classical methods is required since no conservative reconstruction can preserve all the s…
We study how a general steady configuration of finitely-many point vortices, with Newtonian interaction or generalized surface quasi-geostrophic interactions, can be desingularized into a steady configuration of vortex patches. The configurations can be uniformly rotating, uniformly translating, or completely stationary. Using a technique first introduced by Hmidi and Mateu \cite{Hmidi-Mateu} for vortex pairs, we reformulate the problem for the patch boundaries so that it no longer appears singular in the point-vortex limit. Provided the point vortex equilibrium is non-degenerate in a natural …
