In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for a higher order shallow water type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}-u_{txx}+\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u-\partial_{x}^{2j+3}u+3uu_{x}-2u_{x}u_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0, \end{eqnarray*} where $x\in \mathbf{T}=\mathbf{R}/2π$ and $j\in N^{+}.$ Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -\frac{j-2}{2}$ for arbitrary initial data. By using the $I$-method, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $\frac{2j+1-j^{2}}{2j+1}<s\leq 1.$ Our results improve the result of A. A. Himonas, G. Misiolek (Communications in partial Differential Equations, 23(1998), 123-139;Journal of Differential Equations, 161(2000), 479-495.)
We prove the local well-posedness for a nonlinear equation modeling the evolution of the free surface for waves of moderate amplitude in the shallow water regime.
We prove local in time well-posedness for a large class of quasilinear Hamiltonian, or parity preserving, Schrödinger equations on the circle. After a paralinearization of the equation, we perform several paradifferential changes of coordinates in order to transform the system into a paradifferential one with symbols which, at the positive order, are constant and purely imaginary. This allows to obtain a priori energy estimates on the Sobolev norms of the solutions.
We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space $H^s$ on the circle for $s>3/2$.
In this article, we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity coefficients and a term of capillarity introduced by Coquel et al in \cite{5CR}. This model includes at the same time the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficients, shallow-water system and the model of Rohde. We first study the well-posedness of the model in critical regularity spaces with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. In a functional setting as close as possibleto the physical energy spaces, we prove global existence of solutions close to a…
We consider the Cacuhy problem for a viscous compressible rotating shallow water system with a third-order surface-tension term involved, derived recently in the modelling of motions for shallow water with free surface in a rotating sub-domain. The global existence of the solution in the space of Besov type is shown for initial data close to a constant equilibrium state away from the vacuum. Unlike the previous analysis about the compressible fluid model without coriolis forces, the rotating effect causes a coupling between two parts of Hodge's decomposition of the velocity vector field, addit…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation \[ u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{3}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})+\partial_{x} (1-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-1}\left[u^{2}+\frac{1}{2}u_{x}^{2}\right]=0,x\in {\mathbf T}=\R/2π λ\] with low regularity data in the periodic settings and $λ\geq1$. We prove that the bilinear estimate in $X_{s,b}$ with $s<\frac{1}{2}$ is invalid. We also prove that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $\frac{1}{6}<s<\frac{1}{2}$ for small initial data. The result of this paper improves the result of case $j=1$ of Himonas…
In this paper we prove long time existence for a large class of fully nonlinear, reversible and parity preserving Schrödinger equations on the one dimensional torus. We show that for any initial condition even in $x$, regular enough and of size $\varepsilon$ sufficiently small, the lifespan of the solution is of order $\varepsilon^{-N}$ for any $N\in\mathbb{N}$ if some non resonance conditions are fulfilled. After a paralinearization of the equation we perform several para-differential changes of variables which diagonalize the system up to a very regularizing term. Once achieved the diagonali…
We consider the classical Cauchy problem for the 3d Navier-Stokes equation with the initial vorticity $ω_0$ concentrated on a circle, or more generally, a linear combination of such data for circles with common axis of symmetry. We show that natural approximations of the problem obtained by smoothing the initial data satisfy good a-priori estimates which enable us to conclude that the original problem with the singular initial distribution of vorticity has a solution. We impose no restriction on the size of the initial data.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})+ \partial_{x}(1-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-1}\left[u^{2}+\frac{1}{2}u_{x}^{2}\right]=0 \end{eqnarray*} with low regularity data in the periodic settings. Himonas and Misiolek (Communications in Partial Differential Equations, 23(1998), 123-139.) have proved that the problem is locally well-posed for small initial data in H^{s}(\mathbf{T}) with s\geq-\frac{j}{2}+1,j\in N^{+} with the aid of the standard Fourier restriction norm method. To th…
For initial data in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb T)$, $\frac 12 < s \leqslant 1$, the solution to the Cauchy problem for the Benjamin-Ono equation on the circle is shown to grow at most polynomially in time at a rate $(1+t)^{3(s-\frac 12) + ε}$, $0<ε\ll 1$. Key to establishing this result is the discovery of a nonlinear smoothing effect for the Benjamin-Ono equation, according to which the solution to the equation satisfied by a certain gauge transform, which is widely used in the well-posedness theory of the Cauchy problem, becomes smoother once its free solution is removed.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional free surface equation of shallow water wave, we obtain local well-posedness of the free surface equation of shallow water wave in Sobolev spaces. In addition, we also derive a wave-breaking mechanism for strong solutions.
The failure of uniform dependence on the data is an interesting property of classical solution for a hyperbolic system. In this paper, we consider the solution map of the Cauchy problem to the 2D viscous shallow water equations which is a hyperbolic-parabolic system. We prove that the solution map of this problem is not uniformly continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s\times H^{s}$ for $s>2$.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. We first prove the local well-posedness of this problem by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition, and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then, we get the global existence of the system with small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. Our obtained result improves the recent result in \cite{W}
We are considering the asimptotic behavior as $t\to\infty$ of solutions of the Cauchy problem for parabolic second order equations with time periodic coefficients. The problem is reduced to considering degenerate time-homogeneous diffusion processes on the product of a unit circle and Euclidean space.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in Besov spaces. We firstly prove the local well-posedness of this problem in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>max\{1,\frac{2}{p}\}$, $1\leq p,r\leq \infty$ by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then we can prove the global existence of the system with small enough initial data in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $1\leq p\leq2$, $1\leq r<\infty$ and $s>\frac{2}{p}$. Our obtained results generalize and cover the recent results …
We prove in this paper a long time existence result for a modified Boussinesq-Peregrine equation in one dimension, describing the motion of Water Waves in shallow water, in the case of a non flat bottom. We first give a local existence result for the original Boussinesq Peregrine equation as derived by Boussinesq and Peregrine in all dimensions. We then introduce a new model which has formally the same precision as the Boussinesq-Peregrine equation, and give a local existence result in all dimensions. We finally prove a long time existence result in dimension 1 for this new equation, without a…
The purpose of this paper is to derive rigorously the so called viscous shallow water equations given for instance page 958-959 in [A. Oron, S.H. Davis, S.G. Bankoff, Rev. Mod. Phys, 69 (1997), 931?980]. Such a system of equations is similar to compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a barotropic fluid with a non-constant viscosity. To do that, we consider a layer of incompressible and Newtonian fluid which is relatively thin, assuming no surface tension at the free surface. The motion of the fluid is described by 3d Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and free surface. We prove t…
We study the Cauchy problem of the 2D viscous shallow water equations in some critical Besov spaces $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. As is known, this system is locally well-posed for large initial data as well as globally well-posed for small initial data in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p<4$ and ill-posed in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p>4$. In this paper, we prove that this system is ill-posed for …
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. The system can be seen as a weak nonlocal dispersive perturbation of the shallow water system. The proof of well-posedness relies on energy estimates. However, due to the symmetry lack of the nonlinear part, in order to close the a priori estimates one has to modify the traditional energy norm in use. Hamiltonian conservation provides with global well-posedness at least for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
The inverse problem of finding the refraction coefficient of a shallow ocean from the observation of the extra Cauchy data for the acoustic field at the surface of the ocean is studied. Uniqueness theorem is proved and a reconstruction algorithm is obtained. Comments are given on the related results in the literature.
Global spherically symmetric classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data of the multi-dimensional non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations
We rereview the classical Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem and the related uniqueness theorem of Holmgren, in the simple setting of powers of the Laplacian and a smooth curve segment in the plane. As a local problem, the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya and Holmgren theorems supply a complete answer to the existence and uniqueness issues. Here, we consider a global uniqueness problem of Holmgren's type. Perhaps surprisingly, we obtain a connection with the theory of quadrature identities, which demonstrates that rather subtle algebraic properties of the curve come into play. For instance, if $Ω$ is the interior…
In this paper, we consider inverse shape problems coming from diffuse optical tomography and inverse scattering. In both problems, our goal is to reconstruct small volume interior regions from measured data on the exterior surface of an object. In order to achieve this, we will derive an asymptotic expansion of the reciprocity gap functional associated with each problem. The reciprocity gap functional takes in the measured Cauchy data on the exterior surface of the object. In diffuse optical tomography, we prove that a MUSIC-type algorithm can be used to recover the unknown subregions. This gi…
For the natural initial conditions $L^1$ in the density field (more generally a positive bounded Radon measure) and $L^\infty$ in the velocity field we obtain global approximate solutions to the Cauchy problem for the 3-D systems of isothermal and isentropic gases, the 2-D shallow water equations and the 3-D system of collisionnal self-gravitating gases. We obtain a sequence of functions which are differentiable in time and continuous in space and tend to satisfy the equations in the sense of distributions in the space variables and in the strong sense in the time variable. The method of const…
We consider the stationary and non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ and in the exterior domain outside of the large circle. The solution $v$ is handled in the class with $\nabla v \in L^q$ for $q \ge 2$. Since we deal with the case $q \ge 2$, our class is larger in the sense of spatial decay at infinity than that of the finite Dirichlet integral, i.e., for $q=2$ where a number of results such as asymptotic behavior of solutions have been observed. For the stationary problem we shall show that $ω(x)= o(|x|^{-(1/q + 1/q^2)})$ and $\nabla v(x) = o(|x|^{-(1/q+1/…
We study a nonlocal regularisation of a scalar conservation law given by a fractional derivative of order between one and two. The nonlocal operator is of Riesz-Feller type with skewness two minus its order. This equation describes the internal structure of hydraulic jumps in a shallow water model. The main purpose of the paper is the study of the vanishing viscosity limit of the Cauchy problem for this equation. First, we study the properties of the solution of the regularised problem and then we show that solutions converge to the entropy solution of the scalar conservation law in this limit…
In the vast literature on tsunami research, few articles have been devoted to energy issues. A theoretical investigation on the energy of waves generated by bottom motion is performed here. We start with the full incompressible Euler equations in the presence of a free surface and derive both dispersive and non-dispersive shallow-water equations with an energy equation. It is shown that dispersive effects only appear at higher order in the energy budget. Then we solve the Cauchy-Poisson problem of tsunami generation for the linearized water wave equations. Exchanges between potential and kinet…
