Using a remainder theorem for valuations of a field, we give a new perspective on the norm function of a global field. We define the Euler totient function of a global field and recover the essential analytical properties of the classical arithmetical function, namely the product formula. In addition, we prove the holomorphicity of the associated zeta function. As an application, we recover the analog of the mean value theorem of Erdős, Dressler, and Bateman via the Weiner-Ikehara theorem.
Lehmer's totient problem asks if there exists a composite number $d$ such that its totient divide $d-1$. In this article we generalize the Lehmer's totient problem in algebraic number fields. We introduce the notion of a Lehmer number. Lehmer numbers are defined to be the natural numbers which obey the Lehmer's problem in the ring of algebraic integers of a number field.
In this paper, we consider the function field analogue of the Lehmer's totient problem. Let $p(x)\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ and $φ(q,p(x))$ be the Euler's totient function of $p(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_q[x],$ where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field with $q$ elements. We prove that $φ(q,p(x))|(q^{{\rm deg}(p(x))}-1)$ if and only if (i) $p(x)$ is irreducible; or (ii) $q=3, \; p(x)$ is the product of any $2$ non-associate irreducibes of degree $1;$ or (iii) $q=2,\; p(x)$ is the product of all irreducibles of degree $1,$ all irreducibles of degree $1$ and $2,$ and the product of any $3$ irreducibles one each…
In this paper we study the variance of the Euler totient function (normalized to $φ(n)/n$) in the integers $\mathbb{Z}$ and in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that in $\mathbb{Z}$, under some assumptions, the variance of the normalized Euler function becomes constant. This is supported by several numerical simulations. Surprisingly, in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, $q\rightarrow \infty$, the analogue does not hold: due to a high amount of cancellation, the variance becomes inversely proportional to the size of the interval.
When investigating the distribution of the Euler totient function, one encounters sets of primes P where if p is in P then r is in P for all r|(p-1). While it is easy to construct finite sets of such primes, the only infinite set known is the set of all primes. We translate this problem into the function field setting and construct an infinite such set in F_p[x] whenever p is equivalent to 2 or 5 modulo 9.
Erdős first conjectured that infinitely often we have $φ(n) = σ(m)$, where $φ$ is the Euler totient function and $σ$ is the sum of divisor function. This was proven true by Ford, Luca and Pomerance in 2010. We ask the analogous question of whether infinitely often we have $φ(F) = σ(G)$ where $F$ and $G$ are polynomials over some finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We find that when $q\not=2$ or $3$, then this can only trivially happen when $F=G=1$. Moreover, we give a complete characterisation of the solutions in the case $q=2$ or $3$. In particular, we show that $φ(F) = σ(G)$ infinitely often when $…
The frequency of occurrence of "locally repeated" values of arithmetic functions is a common theme in analytic number theory, for instance in the Erdős-Mirsky problem on coincidences of the divisor function at consecutive integers, the analogous problem for the Euler totient function, and the quantitative conjectures of Erdős, Pomerance and Sarkőzy and of Graham, Holt and Pomerance on the frequency of occurrences. In this paper we introduce the corresponding problems in the setting of polynomials over a finite field, and completely solve them in the large finite field limit.
In this paper we obtain the extended genus field of a global field. First we define the extended genus field of a global function field and we obtain, via class field theory, the description of the extended genus field of an arbitrary global function field. In the last part of the paper we use the techniques for function fields to describe the extended genus field of an arbitrary number field.
In this article we study certain asymptotic properties of global fields. We consider the set of Tsfasman-Vladuts invariants of infinite global fields and answer some natural questions arising from their work. In particular, we prove the existence of infinite global fields having finitely many strictly positive invariants at given places, and the existence of infinite number fields with certain prescribed invariants being zero. We also give precisions on the deficiency of infinite global fields and on the primes decomposition in those fields.
For every affine variety over a global function field, we show that the set of its points with coordinates in an arbitrary rank-one multiplicative subgroup of this function field is topologically dense in the set of its points with coordinates in the topological closure of this subgroup in the product of the multiplicative group of those local completions of this function field over all but finitely many places.
Neukirch developed an axiomatic and explicit approach to class field theory. This was applied to local fields and number fields but was never done for global function fields since he believed that geometric approach is more suitable. Nonetheless all the axioms can be verified and we plan to prove that global function fields satisfy the axioms Neukirch developed.
In this paper, we use counting theorems from the geometry of numbers to extend the Riemann-Roch theorem and the Riemann-Hurwitz formula to global fields of arbitrary characteristic.
Let k be a global field and \pp any nonarchimedean prime of k. We give a new and uniform proof of the well known fact that the set of all elements of k which are integral at \pp is diophantine over k. Let k^{perf} be the perfect closure of a global field of characteristic p>2. We also prove that the set of all elements of k^{perf} which are integral at some prime \qq of k^{perf} is diophantine over k^{perf}, and this is the first such result for a field which is not finitely generated over its constant field. This is related to Hilbert's Tenth Problem because for global fields k of positive ch…
In this paper we develop the analytic theory of a multiple zeta function in d independent complex variables defined over a global function field. This is the function field analog of the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta function of depth d.
Let K be the function field of a smooth projective surface over a finite field. In this article, following the work of Parimala and Suresh, we establish a local-global principle for the divisibility of elements in H^3(K,Z/l) by elements in H^2(K,Z/l).
We prove a formula for the limit of logarithmic derivatives of zeta functions in families of global fields with an explicit error term. This can be regarded as a rather far reaching generalization of the explicit Brauer-Siegel theorem both for number fields and function fields.
Given a self-equivalence of a global function field, its wild set is the set of points where the self-equivalence fails to preserve parity of valuation. In this paper we describe structure of finite wild sets.
In the present work, we determine explicitly the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global function field given the minimal polynomial of the extension. We give algorithms computing the ramification data and the genus of any separable cubic extension of any global rational function field.
Let $F$ be a global field, $A$ a central simple algebra over $F$ and $K$ a finite (separable or not) field extension of $F$ with degree $[K:F]$ dividing the degree of $A$ over $F$. An embedding of $K$ in $A$ over $F$ exists implies an embedding exists locally everywhere. In this paper we give detailed discussions when the converse (i.e. the local-global principle in question) may hold.
Using the higher tame symbol and Kawada and Satake's Witt vector method, A. N. Parshin developed class field theory for higher local fields, defining reciprocity maps separately for the tamely ramified and wildly ramified cases. We extend this technique to the case of local-global fields associated to points and curves on an algebraic surface over a finite field.
It is shown that any finitely generated subring of a global field has a universal first-order definition in its fraction field. This covers Koenigsmann's result for the ring of integers and its subsequent extensions to rings of integers in number fields and rings of $S$-integers in global function fields of odd characteristic. In this article a proof is presented which is uniform in all global fields, including the characteristic two case, where the result is entirely novel. Furthermore, the proposed method results in universal formulae requiring significantly fewer quantifiers than the formul…
For a semi-abelian variety over a global function field which is isogenous to an isotrivial one, we show that on the product of local points of a subvariety satisfying a minor condition, the topological closure of a finitely generated subgroup of %the group of its global points cuts out exactly the global points of the subvariety lying in this subgroup. As a corollary, on every non-isotrivial super-singular curve of genus two over a global function field, we conclude that the Brauer-Manin condition cuts out exactly the set of its rational points.
In this article we give an adelic proof of the Chevalley-Gras formula for global fields, which itself is a generalization of the ambiguous class number formula. The idea is to reduce the formula to the Hasse norm theorem, the local and global reciprocity laws. We also give an adelic proof of the Chevalley-Gras formula for $0$-th divisor class group in the function field case, which extends a result of Rosen.
For an elliptic curve A defined over a global function field K of characteristic p>0, the p-Selmer group of the Frobenius twist of A tends to have larger order than that of A. The aim of this note is to discuss this phenomenon.
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$, $K/F$ an $\ell$-adic Lie extension ($\ell\neq p$) and $A/F$ an abelian variety. We provide Euler characteristic formulas for the $Gal(K/F)$-module $Sel_A(K)_\ell$.
We show that the backward orbit conjecture is true for powering map $ϕ(z)=z^d$ over a function field $K$ with a finite field of constants, and when $d$ is relatively prime to the characteristic of $K$.
In this short note we provide a few examples of non-isomorphic arithmetically equivalent global function fields. These examples are obtained via well-known technique of adjoining the torsion points of various Drinfeld Modules to realise the $Gl_n(\mathbb F_q)$ as a Galois group of extensions of global function fields. Furthermore we afford the code of the Magma scripts to verify the results and construct more examples in similar fashion.
In this paper, we show a general way to interpret the infrastructure of a global field of arbitrary unit rank. This interpretation generalizes the prior concepts of the giant step operation and f-representations, and makes it possible to relate the infrastructure to the (Arakelov) divisor class group of the global field. In the case of global function fields, we present results that establish that effective implementation of the presented methods is indeed possible, and we show how Shanks' baby-step giant-step method can be generalized to this situation.
We prove the $p$-parity conjecture for elliptic curves over global fields of characteristic $p > 3$. We also present partial results on the $\ell$-parity conjecture for primes $\ell \neq p$.
We study on finite unramified extensions of global function fields (function fields of one valuable over a finite field). We show two results. One is an extension of Perret's result about the ideal class group problem. Another is a construction of a geometric $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which has a certain property.
This paper presents an adaptation of recently developed algorithms for quadratic forms over number fields in arXiv:1304.0708 to global function fields of odd characteristics. First, we present algorithm for checking if a given non-degenerate quadratic form is isotropic or hyperbolic. Next we devise a method for computing the dimension of the anisotropic part of a quadratic form. Finally we present algorithms computing two field invariants: the level and the Pythagoras number.
Let F/k be a finite abelian extension of global function fields, totally split at a distinguished place \infty. We prove that a complex Gras conjecture holds for a suitable group of Stark units, and we derive a refined analytic class number formula.
In this note, we give a short proof of the existence of certain abelian extension over a given global field $K$. This result implies that for every positive integer $m$, there exists an abelian extension $L/K$ of exponent $m$ such that the $m$-torsion subgroup of $\Br(K)$ equals $\Br(L/K)$.
In this paper we present an approach to study arithmetical properties of global function fields by working with Artin L-functions. In particular we recall and then extend a criteria of two function fields to be arithmetically equivalent in terms of Artin L-functions of representations associated to the common normal closure of those fields. We provide few examples of such non-isomorphic fields and also discuss an algorithm to construct many such examples by using torsion points on elliptic curves. Finally, we will show how to apply our results in order to distinguish two global fields by a fin…
Let $ K $ be a global function field of characteristic $ 2 $. For each non-trivial place $ v $ of $ K $, let $ K_{v} $ be the completion of $ K $ at $ v $. We show that if two non-degenerate quadratic forms are similar over every $ K_{v} $, then they are similar over $ K $. This provides an analogue of the version for characteristic not $ 2 $ previously obtained by T.Ono.
In connection with each global field of positive characteristic we exhibit many examples of two-variable algebraic functions possessing properties consistent with a conjectural refinement of the Stark conjecture in the function field case recently proposed by the author (math.NT/0407535). Most notably, all examples are Coleman units. We obtain our results by studying rank one shtukas in which both zero and pole are generic, i.~e., shtukas not associated to any Drinfeld module.
In this paper we give two proofs of the mass formula for definite central division algebras over global function fields, due to Denert and Van Geel. The first proof is based on a calculation of Tamagawa measures. The second proof is based on analytic methods, in which we establish the relationship directly between the mass and the value of the associated zeta function at zero.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a global function field $K$, the Galois action on the $n$-torsion points of $E$ gives rise to a mod-n Galois representation $ρ_{E,n}$. For $K$ satisfying some mild conditions, we show that the set of $E$ for which $ρ_{E,n}$ is as large as possible for all $n$, has density $1$.
We establish a general Kronecker limit formula of arbitrary rank over global function fields with Drinfeld period domains playing the role of upper-half plane. The Drinfeld-Siegel units come up as equal characteristic modular forms replacing the classical $Δ$. This leads to analytic means of deriving a Colmez-type formula for "stable Taguchi height" of CM Drinfeld modules having arbitrary rank. A Lerch-Type formula for "totally real" function fields is also obtained, with the Heegner cycle on the Bruhat-Tits buildings intervene. Also our limit formula is naturally applied to the special values…
Let $K$ be a global field which contains a primitive $p$-th root of unity, where $p$ is a prime number. M. J. Hopkins and K. G. Wickelgren showed that for $p=2$, any triple Massey product over $K$ with respect to $\mathbb{F}_p$, contains 0 whenever it is defined. We show that this is true for all primes $p$.
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
This article is concerned with proving a refined function field analogue of the Coates-Sinnott conjecture, formulated in the number field context in 1974. Our main theorem calculates the Fitting ideal of a certain even Quillen K-group in terms of special values of L-functions. The techniques employed are directly inspired by recent work of Greither and Popescu in the equivariant Iwasawa theory of arbitrary global fields. They rest on the results of Greither-Popescu on the Galois module structure of certain naturally defined Picard 1-motives associated to an arbitrary Galois extension of functi…
Let H be a connected reductive group defined over a non-archimedean local field F of characteristic p>0. Using Poincaré series, we globalize supercuspidal representations of H(F) in such a way that we have control over ramification at all other places, and such that the notion of distinction with respect to a unipotent subgroup (indeed more general subgroups) is preserved. In combination with the work of Vincent Lafforgue on the global Langlands correspondence, we present some applications, such as the stability of Langlands-Shahidi γ-factors and the local Langlands correspondence for classica…
In this paper, we formulate and prove a derived category version of Poitou-Tate duality on Galois cohomology of compact modules (with a continuous Galois action) over a pro-p ring, where p is a prime.
In the present work we give the construction of the genus field and the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions, where $l$ is a prime number. In the Kummer case, if $K$ is contained in a cyclotomic funtion field, the construction is given using Leopoldt's ideas by means of Dirichlet characters. Following the definition of Anglès and Jaulent of extended Hilbert class field, we obtain the extended genus field of an elementary abelian $l$-extension of a field of rational functions.
We solve an energy minimization problem for local fields. As an application of these results, we improve on lower bounds set by Bombieri and Zannier for the limit infimum of the Weil height in fields of totally p-adic numbers and generalizations thereof. In the case of fields with mixed archimedean and non-archimedean splitting conditions, we are able to combine our bounds with similar bounds at the archimedean places for totally real fields.
A polynomial with coefficients in the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ of a global field $K$ is called intersective if it has a root modulo every finite-indexed subgroup of $\mathcal{O}_{K}$. We prove two criteria for a polynomial $f(x)\in\mathcal{O}_{K}[x]$ to be intersective. One of these criteria is in terms of the Galois group of the splitting field of the polynomial, whereas the second criterion is verifiable entirely in terms of constants which depend upon $K$ and the polynomial $f$. The proofs use the theory of global field extensions and upper bound on the least prime ideal in the Ch…
