We study on finite unramified extensions of global function fields (function fields of one valuable over a finite field). We show two results. One is an extension of Perret's result about the ideal class group problem. Another is a construction of a geometric $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which has a certain property.
We show that for primes $N, p \geq 5$ with $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$ is divisible by $p$. Our methods are via congruences between Eisenstein series and cusp forms. In particular, we show that when $N \equiv -1 \bmod p$, there is always a cusp form of weight $2$ and level $Γ_0(N^2)$ whose $\ell$-th Fourier coefficient is congruent to $\ell + 1$ modulo a prime above $p$, for all primes $\ell$. We use the Galois representation of such a cusp form to explicitly construct an unramified degree $p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$.
For an odd prime number $p$, we study the number of generators of the unramified Iwasawa modules of the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions over Iwasawa algebra. In a previous paper of the authors, under several assumptions for an imaginary quadratic field, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the Iwasawa module to be cyclic as a module over the Iwasawa algebla. Our main result is to give methods for computation and numerical examples about the results. We remark that our results do not need the assumption that Greenberg's generalized conjecture holds.
Let $N/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $ρ^\mathrm{nr} : G_K \to \mathrm{Gl}_r(\mathbb Z_p)$ be an $r$-dimensional unramified representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ which is the restriction of an unramified representation $ρ^\mathrm{nr}_{\mathbb Q_p} : G_{\mathbb Q_p} \to \mathrm{Gl}_r(\mathbb Z_p)$. In this paper we consider the $\mathrm{Gal}(N/K)$-equivariant local $ε$-conjecture for the $p$-adic representation $T = \mathbb Z_p^r(1)(ρ^\mathrm{nr})$. For example, if $A$ is an abelian variety of dimension $r$ defined over $\mathbb Q_p$ with good ordi…
For a CM-field $K$ and an odd prime number $p$, let $\widetilde K'$ be a certain multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$. In this paper, we study several basic properties of the unramified Iwasawa module $X_{\widetilde K'}$ of $\widetilde K'$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p[[{\rm Gal}(\widetilde K'/K)]]$-module. Our first main result is a description of the order of a Galois coinvariant of $X_{\widetilde K'}$ in terms of the characteristic power series of the unramified Iwasawa module of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ under a certain assumption on the splitting of primes above $p$. Second …
We study the equivariant local epsilon constant conjecture, denoted by $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K,V)$, as formulated in various forms by Kato, Benois and Berger, Fukaya and Kato and others, for certain 1-dimensional twists $T=\mathbb{Z}_p(χ^{nr})(1)$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p(1)$. Following ideas of recent work of Izychev and Venjakob we prove that for $T=\mathbb{Z}_p(1)$ a conjecture of Breuning is equivalent to $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K,V)$. As our main result we show the validity of $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K,V)$ for certain wildly and weakly ramified abelian extensions $N/K$. A crucial step in the proof is the construction of …
For various nonsolvable groups $G$, we prove the existence of extensions of the rationals $\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $G$ and inertia groups of order dividing $ge(G)$, where $ge(G)$ is the smallest exponent of a generating set for $G$. For these groups $G$, this gives the existence of number fields of degree $ge(G)$ with an unramified $G$-extension. The existence of such extensions over $\mathbb{Q}$ for all finite groups would imply that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a quadratic number field admitting an unramified $G$-extension, as was recently conjectured. We also provide furt…
Let $p$ be a prime number. Mazur proved that a geometrically maximal unramified abelian covering of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ is given by the Shimura covering $X_2(p) \to X_0(p)$, that is, a unique subcovering of $X_1(p) \to X_0(p)$ of degree $N_p := (p-1)/\gcd(p-1, 12)$. In this short paper, we show that a geometrically maximal abelian covering $X_2'(p) \to X_0(p)$ of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ unramified outside cusps is cyclic of degree $2N_p$. The main ingredient for the construction of $X_2'(p)$ is the generalized Dedelind eta functions.
Let $K/F$ be a finite extension of number fields of degree $n \geq 2$. We establish effective field-uniform unconditional upper bounds for the least norm of a prime ideal of $F$ which is degree 1 over $\mathbb{Q}$ and does not ramify or split completely in $K$. We improve upon the previous best known general estimates due to X. Li when $F = \mathbb{Q}$ and Murty-Patankar when $K/F$ is Galois. Our bounds are the first when $K/F$ is not assumed to be Galois and $F \neq \mathbb{Q}$.
We investigate unramified extensions of number fields with prescribed solvable Galois group and certain extra conditions. In particular, we are interested in the minimal degree of a number field $K$, Galois over $\mathbb{Q}$, such that $K$ possesses an unramified $G$-extension. We improve the best known bounds for the degree of such number fields $K$ for certain classes of solvable groups, in particular nilpotent groups.
Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. In this article we investigate the space of unramified automorphic forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_n$ over the rational function field defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ (i.e.\ for $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$). In particular, we prove that the space of unramified cusp form is trivial and (for $n=3$) that the space of eigenforms is one dimensional. Moreover, we show that there are no nontrivial unramified toroidal forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_3$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ and conjecture that the space of all toroidal automor…
Let $f\left(K\right)$ be the number of unramified extensions $L/K$ of a quadratic number field $K$ with $\mathrm{Gal}\left(L/K\right)=H$ and $\mathrm{Gal}\left(L/\mathbb{Q}\right)=G$ where $G$ is a central extension of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ by $\mathbb{F}_{2}$. We find a function $g\left(K\right)$ such that $f/g$ has finite moments and a distribution on its values. We show this distribution is a point mass when $H$ is non-abelian and the Cohen-Lenstra distribution when $H$ is abelian, despite the fact that the set of values of $f/g$ do not form a discrete set. We prove an explicit formula for $…
We consider the distribution of the Galois groups $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ of maximal unramified extensions as $K$ ranges over $Γ$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove two properties of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ coming from number theory, which we use as motivation to build a probability distribution on profinite groups with these properties. In Part I, we build such a distribution as a limit of distributions on $n$-generated profinite groups. In Part II, we prove as $q\rightarrow\infty$, agreement of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operato…
We study the random étale algebra generated by a random polynomial with i.i.d. coefficients distributed according to Haar measure normalized on $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We determine the probability that this random algebra is an unramified field, explicitly. In addition, we prove a private case of a conjecture made by Bhargava, Cremona, Fisher, and Gajović. More precisely, we show that this probability is a rational function of $p$ that is invariant under replacing $p$ by $1/p$.
When looking at how periods of $π_{1}^{\mathfrak{m}}(\mathbb{P}^{1}\diagdown \lbrace 0, 1, \infty \rbrace )$, i.e. multiple zeta values, embeds into periods of $π_{1}^{\mathfrak{m}}(\mathbb{P}^{1}\diagdown \lbrace 0, \pm 1, \infty \rbrace )$, i.e. Euler sums, an explicit criteria via the coaction $Δ$ acting on their motivic versions comes out. In this paper, adopting this Galois descent approach, we present a new basis for the space $\mathcal{H}^{1}$ of motivic multiple zeta values via motivic Euler sums. Up to an analytic conjecture, we also prove that the motivic Hoffman star basis $ζ^{\star…
We show that $L$-packets of toral supercuspidal representations arising from unramified maximal tori of $p$-adic groups are realized by Deligne--Lusztig varieties for parahoric subgroups. We prove this by exhibiting a direct comparison between the cohomology of these varieties and algebraic constructions of supercuspidal representations. Our approach is to establish that toral irreducible representations are uniquely determined by the values of their characters on a domain of sufficiently regular elements. This is an analogue of Harish-Chandra's characterization of real discrete series represe…
For given rational prime number $p$ consider the tower of finite extensions of fields $K_0/\mathbb{Q}_p,$ $K/K_0, L/K, M/L$, where $K/K_0$ is unramified and $M/L$ is a Galois extension with Galois group $G$. Suppose one dimensional Honda formal group over the ring $\mathcal{O}_K$, relative to the extension $K/K_0$ and uniformizer $π\in K_0$ is given. The operation $x\underset{F}+y=F(x,y)$ sets a new structure of abelian group on the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{p}_M$ of the ring $\mathcal{O}_M$ which we will denote by $F(\mathfrak{p}_M)$. In this paper the structure of $F(\mathfrak{p}_M)$ as $\mat…
Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_F$. An integral (resp. classic) quadratic form over $\mathcal{O}_F$ is called $k$-universal (resp. classically $k$-universal) if it represents all integral (resp. classic) quadratic forms of dimension $k$. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of $k$-universal and classically $k$-universal quadratic forms over $\mathcal{O}_F$. The results are stated in terms of the fundamental invariants associated to Jordan splittings of quadratic lattices.
We employ methods from homotopy theory to define new obstructions to solutions of embedding problems. By using these novel obstructions we study embedding problems with non-solvable kernel. We apply these obstructions to study the unramified inverse Galois problem. That is, we show that our methods can be used to determine that certain groups cannot be realized as the Galois groups of unramified extensions of certain number fields. To demonstrate the power of our methods, we give an infinite family of totally imaginary quadratic number fields such that $\text{Aut}(\text{PSL}(2,q^2))$ for $q$ a…
We adapt a technique of Kisin to construct and study crystalline deformation rings of $G_K$ for a finite extension $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$. This is done by considering a moduli space of Breuil--Kisin modules, satisfying an additional Galois condition, over the universal deformation ring. For $K$ unramified over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and Hodge--Tate weights in $[0,p]$, we study the geometry of this space. As a consequence we prove that, under a mild cyclotomic-freeness assumption, all crystalline representations of an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, with Hodge--Tate weights in $[0,p]$, are potentiall…
We prove that a certain genuine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ on the non-linear double cover of a simple, simply-laced, simply-connected, Chevalley group $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}_{2}$ admits a Bernstein presentation. This presentation has two consequences. First, the Bernstein component containing the genuine unramified principal series is equivalent to $\mathcal{H}$-mod. Second, $\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the linear group $G/Z_{2}$, where $Z_{2}$ is the $2$-torsion of the center of $G$. This isomorphism of Hecke algebras provides a correspondence between certain gen…
Let $K$ be a number field of degree $n$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. Then the 4-rank of the strict class group of $K$ is at least ${\text{rank}_2 \, } ({ E_{K}^{+} } / E_K^2) - \lfloor n /2 \rfloor$ where $E_K$ and ${ E_{K}^{+} }$ denote the units and the totally positive units of $K$, respectively, and $\text{rank}_2$ is the dimension as an elementary abelian 2-group. In particular, the strict class group of a totally real field $K$ with a totally positive system of fundamental units contains at least$(n-1)/2$ ($n$ odd) or $n/2 -1$ ($n$ even) independent elements of order 4. We also investigate when u…
In this paper we study certain category of smooth modules for reductive $p$--adic groups analogous to the usual smooth complex representations but with the field of complex numbers replaced by a $\mathbb Q$--algebra. We prove some fundamental results in these settings, and as an example we give a classification of admissible unramified irreducible representations proving by reduction to the complex case that if the space of $K$--invariants is finite dimensional in an irreducible smooth unramified representation that the representation is admissible.
Let $p\equiv 1\,(\mathrm{mod}\,9)$ be a prime number and $ζ_3$ be a primitive cube root of unity. Then $\mathrm{k}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p},ζ_3)$ is a pure metacyclic field with group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathrm{k}/\mathbb{Q})\simeq S_3$. In the case that $\mathrm{k}$ possesses a $3$-class group $C_{\mathrm{k},3}$ of type $(9,3)$, the capitulation of $3$-ideal classes of $\mathrm{k}$ in its unramified cyclic cubic extensions is determined, and conclusions concerning the maximal unramified pro-$3$-extension $\mathrm{k}_3^{(\infty)}$ of $\mathrm{k}$ are drawn.
We give formulas for calculating the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space $X$ of a semisimple simply connected group $G$ with finite geometric stabilizer $\bar F$ over a wide family of fields of characteristic 0. When $k$ is a number field, we use these formulas in order to study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation. We prove in particular that the Brauer-Manin pairing is constant on $X(k_v)$ for every $v$ outside from an explicit finite set of non archimedean places of $k$.
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and Hilbert class field $H$. Suppose $p\nmid [H:K]$ is a prime number which splits in $K$, say $p\mathcal{O}=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}^*$. Let $H_\infty=HK_\infty$ where $K_\infty$ is the unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Write $M(H_\infty)$ for the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $H_\infty$ unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and set $X(H_\infty)=\mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\infty)$. In this paper, we establish the…
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, and let $\mathcal{O}$ be the ring of integers of $K$. The prime $2$ splits in $K$, say $2\mathcal{O} = \mathfrak{p} \mathfrak{p}^\ast$, and there is a unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$, which is unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$, and write $H_\infty = HK_\infty$. Let $M(H_\infty)$ be the maximal abelian $2$-extension of $H_\infty$, which is unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and put $X(H_\infty) = \mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\inf…
Let $E$ be a CM number field and $F$ its maximal real subfield. We prove a level-raising result for regular algebraic conjugate self-dual automorphic representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$. This generalizes previously known results of Thorne by removing certain hypotheses occurring in that work. In particular, the level-raising prime $p$ is allowed to be unramified as opposed to inert in $F$, the field $E/F$ is not assumed to be everywhere unramified, and the field $E$ is allowed to be a general CM field.
Let $q$ be a prime with $q \equiv 7 \mod 8$, and let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$. Then $2$ splits in $K$, and we write $\mathfrak{p}$ for either of the primes $K$ above $2$. Let $K_\infty$ be the unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$ with $n$-th layer $K_n$. For certain quadratic extensions $F/K$, we prove a simple exact formula for the $λ$-invariant of the Galois group of the maximal abelian 2-extension unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$ of the field $F_\infty = FK_\infty$. Equivalently, our result determines the exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$-corank of certain Selmer gr…
For a prime number $p$ and a number field $k$, let $\tilde{k}$ be the compositum of all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. Greenberg's Generalized Conjecture (GGC) claims the pseudo-nullity of the unramified Iwasawa module $X(\tilde{k})$ of $\tilde{k}$. It is known that, when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic field, GGC has a consequence on the Iwasawa invariants associated to $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. In this paper, we partially generalize it to arbitrary number fields $k$.
For a number field $F$ and an odd prime number $p,$ let $\tilde{F}$ be the compositum of all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $F$ and $\tildeΛ$ the associated Iwasawa algebra. Let $G_{S}(\tilde{F})$ be the Galois group over $\tilde{F}$ of the maximal extension which is unramified outside $p$-adic and infinite places. In this paper we study the $\tildeΛ$-module $\mathfrak{X}_{S}^{(-i)}(\tilde{F}):=H_1(G_S(\tilde{F}), \mathbb{Z}_p(-i))$ and its relationship with $X(\tilde{F}(μ_p))(i-1)^Δ,$ the $Δ:=\mathrm{Gal}(\tilde{F}(μ_{p})/\tilde{F})$-invariant of the Galois group over $\tilde{F}(μ_{p})$ of the …

F. Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an imaginary quadratic field such that $2$ splits into two primes $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\bar{\mathfrak{p}}$. Let $\mathbb{K}_{\infty}$ be the unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $\mathbb{K}$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $\mathfrak{f}$ be an ideal coprime to $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathbb{L}$ be an arbitrary extension of $\mathbb{K}$ contained in the ray class field $\mathbb{K}(\mathfrak{p}^2\mathfrak{f})$. Let $\mathbb{L}_{\infty}=\mathbb{K}_{\infty}\mathbb{L}$ and let $\mathbb{M}$ be the maximal $p$-abelian, $\mathfrak{p}$-ramified extension of $\mathbb{L}_{\infty}$. W…
Let $K$ be an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $ρ\colon G_K \rightarrow \operatorname{GL}_n(\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_p)$ a crystalline representation. If the Hodge--Tate weights of $ρ$ differ by at most $p$ then we show that these weights are contained in a natural collection of weights depending only on the restriction to inertia of $\overlineρ = ρ\otimes_{\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_p} \overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. Our methods involve the study of a full subcategory of $p$-torsion Breuil--Kisin modules which we view as extending Fontaine--Laffaille theory to filtrations of length $p$.
We develop properties of unramified, étale and smooth morphisms between Berkovich spaces over $\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that they satisfy properties analogous to those of morphisms of schemes and we provide analytification criteria. Our results hold for any valued field, rings of integers of a number field and discrete valuation rings. Those cases are treated by a unified way.
In this paper, we give a formula for the extended Gross-Keating datum of a quadratic form defined over a finite extension of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ (for $p>2$) or a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Z}_2$. As an application, we describe an explicit formula for the Siegel series for $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We also present the details of algorithms implemented in a Mathematica package to compute the extended Gross-Keating datum and the Siegel series.
Let $n>1$, $e\geq 0$ and a prime number $p\geq 2^{n+2+2e}+3$, such that the index of regularity of $p$ is $\leq e$. We show that there are infinitely many irreducible Galois representations $ρ: Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow {GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ unramified at all primes $l\neq p$. Furthermore, these representations are shown to have image containing a fixed finite index subgroup of ${SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)$. Such representations are constructed by lifting suitable residual representations $\barρ$ with image in the diagonal torus in ${GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_p)$, for which the global deform…
For an algebraic number field $K$ and a prime number $p$, let $\widetilde{K}/K$ be the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. Greenberg's generalized conjecture (GGC) predicts that the Galois group of the maximal unramified abelian pro-$p$ extension of $\widetilde{K}$ is pseudo-null over the completed group ring $\mathbb{Z}_p[\![\mathop{\mathrm{Gal}}\nolimits(\widetilde{K}/K)]\!]$. We show that GGC holds for some imaginary quartic fields containing imaginary quadratic fields and some prime numbers.
