We prove that a certain genuine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ on the non-linear double cover of a simple, simply-laced, simply-connected, Chevalley group $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}_{2}$ admits a Bernstein presentation. This presentation has two consequences. First, the Bernstein component containing the genuine unramified principal series is equivalent to $\mathcal{H}$-mod. Second, $\mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic to the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of the linear group $G/Z_{2}$, where $Z_{2}$ is the $2$-torsion of the center of $G$. This isomorphism of Hecke algebras provides a correspondence between certain genuine unramified principal series of the double cover of $G$ and the Iwahori-unramified representations of the group $G/Z_{2}$.
We prove, under some mild hypothesis, that an étale cover of curves defined over a number field has infinitely many specializations into an everywhere unramified extension of number fields. This constitutes an "absolute" version of the Chevalley-Weil theorem. Using this result, we are able to generalize the techniques of Mestre, Levin and the second author for constructing and counting number fields with large class group.
The classical Chevalley-Weil theorem asserts that for an étale covering of projective varieties over a number field K, the discriminant of the field of definition of the fiber over a K-rational point is uniformly bounded. We obtain a fully explicit version of this theorem in dimension 1.
We present a new framework for a broad class of affine Hecke algebra modules, and show that such modules arise in a number of settings involving representations of $p$-adic groups and $R$-matrices for quantum groups. Instances of such modules arise from (possibly non-unique) functionals on $p$-adic groups and their metaplectic covers, such as the Whittaker functionals. As a byproduct, we obtain new, algebraic proofs of a number of results concerning metaplectic Whittaker functions. These are thus expressed in terms of metaplectic versions of Demazure operators, which are built out of $R$-matri…
Hecke has shown that the different of an extension of number fields is a square in the class group. We prove an analog for branched covers of closed $3$-manifolds saying that the branch divisor is a square in the first homology group.
Half-integral weight modular forms are naturally viewed as automorphic forms on the so-called metaplectic covering of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{A}_{\mathbf{Q}})$ -- a central extension by the roots of unity $μ_2$ in $\mathbf{Q}$. For an odd prime number $p$, we give a complete classification of the smooth irreducible genuine mod-$p$ representations of the corresponding covering of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ by showing that the functor of taking pro-$p$-Iwahori-invariants and its left adjoint define a bijection onto the set of simple right modules of the pro-$p$ Iwahori Hecke algebr…
We study the Iwahori-component of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a central cover of a split linear reductive group and utilize our results for three applications. In fact, it is advantageous to begin at the pro-$p$ level. Thus to begin we study the structure of a genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra, establishing Iwahori-Matsumoto and Bernstein presentations. With this structure theory we first describe the pro-$p$ part of the Gelfand-Graev representation and then the more subtle Iwahori part. For the first application we relate the Gelfand-Graev representation to the metaplectic represe…
We construct, for any symplectic, unitary or special orthogonal group over a locally compact nonarchimedean local field of odd residual characteristic, a type for each Bernstein component of the category of smooth representations, using Bushnell--Kutzko's theory of covers. Moreover, for a component corresponding to a cuspidal representation of a maximal Levi subgroup, we prove that the Hecke algebra is either abelian, or a generic Hecke algebra on an infinite dihedral group, with parameters which are, at least in principle, computable via results of Lusztig.
This paper invents the notion of torified varieties: A torification of a scheme is a decomposition of the scheme into split tori. A torified variety is a reduced scheme of finite type over $\Z$ that admits a torification. Toric varieties, split Chevalley schemes and flag varieties are examples of this type of scheme. Given a torified variety whose torification is compatible with an affine open covering, we construct a gadget in the sense of Connes-Consani and an object in the sense of Soulé and show that both are varieties over $\F_1$ in the corresponding notion. Since toric varieties and spli…
Langlands has described the irreducible admissible representations of $T$, when $T$ is the group of points of an algebraic torus over a local field. Also, Langlands described the automorphic representations of $T_{\mathbb A}$ when $T_{\mathbb A}$ is the group of adelic points of an algebraic torus over a global field $F$. We describe irreducible (in the local setting) and automorphic (in the global setting) $ε$-genuine representations for covers of tori, also known as metaplectic tori, which arise from a framework of Brylinski and Deligne. In particular, our results include a description of sp…
We compute generators and relations for a certain $2$-adic Hecke algebra of level $8$ associated with the double cover of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ and a $2$-adic Hecke algebra of level $4$ associated with $\mathrm{PGL}_2$. We show that these two Hecke algebras are isomorphic as expected from the Shimura correspondence. We use the $2$-adic generators to define classical Hecke operators on the space of holomorphic modular forms of weight $k+1/2$ and level $8M$ where $M$ is odd and square-free. Using these operators and our previous results on half-integral weight forms of level $4M$ we define a subspace …
We classify the irreducible, admissible, smooth, genuine mod p representations of the metaplectic double cover of SL(2,F), where F is a p-adic field and p is odd. We show, using a generalized Satake transform, that each such representation is isomorphic to a certain explicit quotient of a compact induction from a maximal compact subgroup by an action of a spherical Hecke operator, and we define a parameter for the representation in terms of this data. We show that our parameters distinguish genuine nonsupercuspidal representations from genuine supercuspidals, and that every irreducible genuine…
We prove new upper bounds for the sup-norm of Hecke Maaß newforms on $GL(2)$ over a number field. Our newforms are more general than those considered in a recent paper by Blomer, Harcos, Maga, and Milicevic: we do not require square free level. Furthermore, we allow for non-trivial central character. Over the rationals we cover the best bounds as obtained by Saha.
We describe a special case of base change of certain supercuspidal representations from a ramified unitary group to a general linear group, both defined over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. Roughly speaking, we require the underlying stratum of a given supercuspidal representation to be skew maximal simple, and the field datum of this stratum to be of maximal degree, tamely ramified over the base field, and quadratic ramified over its subfield fixed by the Galois involution that defines the unitary group. The base change of this supercuspidal representation is described by a can…
We extend the lifting methods of our previous paper to lift reducible odd representations $\barρ:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(k)$ of Galois groups of global fields $F$ valued in Chevalley groups $G(k)$. Lifting results, when combined with automorphy lifting results pioneered by Wiles in the number field case and the results on the global Langlands correspondence proved by Drinfeld and L. Lafforgue in the function field case, give the only known method to access modularity of mod $p$ Galois representations in both reducible and irreducible cases. In the reducible case this allows one to s…
We exhibit a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold which satisfies a very strong form of Thurston's Virtual Fibration Conjecture. In particular, this manifold has finite covers which fiber over the circle in arbitrarily many ways. More precisely, it has a tower of finite covers where the number of fibered faces of the Thurston norm ball goes to infinity, in fact faster than any power of the logarithm of the degree of the cover, and we give a more precise quantitative lower bound. The example manifold M is arithmetic, and the proof uses detailed number-theoretic information, at the level of the Hecke ei…
