We describe a special case of base change of certain supercuspidal representations from a ramified unitary group to a general linear group, both defined over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. Roughly speaking, we require the underlying stratum of a given supercuspidal representation to be skew maximal simple, and the field datum of this stratum to be of maximal degree, tamely ramified over the base field, and quadratic ramified over its subfield fixed by the Galois involution that defines the unitary group. The base change of this supercuspidal representation is described by a canonical lifting of its underlying simple character, together with the base change of the level-zero component of its inducing cuspidal type, modified by a sign attached to a quadratic Gauss sum defined by the internal structure of the simple character. To obtain this result, we study the reducibility points of a parabolic induction and the corresponding module over the affine Hecke algebra, defined by the covering type over the product of types of the given supercuspidal representation and of a candidate of its base change.
We continue our study of the reduction of PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group that defines the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe "good" $p$-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their 'etale local structure. In this paper we mainly concentrate on the case of unitary groups for a ramified quadratic extension. Some of our results are applications of the theory of twisted affine flag varieties in our previous paper math.AG/0607130.
Local models are schemes which are intended to model the étale-local structure of p-adic integral models of Shimura varieties. Pappas and Zhu have recently given a general group-theoretic construction of flat local models with parahoric level structure for any tamely ramified group, but it remains an interesting problem to characterize the local models, when possible, in terms of an explicit moduli problem. In the setting of local models for ramified, quasi-split GU_n, work towards an explicit moduli description was initiated in the general framework of Rapoport and Zink's book and was subsequ…
We give an explicit description of L-packets and quadratic base change for depth-zero representations of ramified unitary groups in two and three variables. We show that this base change lifting is compatible with a certain lifting of families of representations of finite groups. We conjecture that such a compatibility is valid in much greater generality.
Local models are schemes, defined in terms of linear-algebraic moduli problems, which give étale-local neighborhoods of integral models of certain p-adic PEL Shimura varieties defined by Rapoport and Zink. In the case of a unitary similitude group whose localization at Q_p is ramified, quasi-split GU_n, Pappas has observed that the original local models are typically not flat, and he and Rapoport have introduced new conditions to the original moduli problem which they conjecture to yield a flat scheme. In a previous paper we proved that their new local models are topologically flat when n is o…
In this note, we introduce the notion of almost unramified representations of quasi-split unitary groups of even ranks with respect to an unramified quadratic extension of local fields, and study their behavior under the local theta correspondence. These representations are in some sense the least ramified representations that have root number $-1$.
In this article, we prove results about the cohomology of compact unitary group Shimura varieties at split places. In nonendoscopic cases, we are able to give a full description of the cohomology, after restricting to integral Hecke operators at p on the automorphic side. We allow arbitrary ramification at p; even the PEL data may be ramified. This gives a description of the semisimple local Hasse-Weil zeta function in these cases. We also treat cases of nontrivial endoscopy. For this purpose, we give a general stabilization of the expression given in previous work, following the stabilization…
The formal degree conjecture and the root number conjecture are verified with respect to supercuspidal representations of $Sp_{2n}(F)$ and $L$-parameters associated with tamely ramified extension $K/F$ of degree $2n$. The supercuspidal representation is constructed as a compact induction from an irreducible unitary representation of the hyper special compact group $Sp_{2n}(O_F)$, which is explicitly constructed, based upon the general theory developed by the author, by $K$ and certain character $θ$ of the multiplicative group $K^{\times}$. $L$-parameter is constructed by the data $\{K,θ\}$ by …
In this paper, we study the cohomology of the ramified PEL unitary Rapoport-Zink space of signature $(1,n-1)$ by using the Bruhat-Tits stratification on its special fiber. As such, we apply the same method that we developped for the unramified case in two previous papers. More precisely, we first investigate the cohomology of a given closed Bruhat-Tits stratum. It is isomorphic to a generalized Deligne-Lusztig variety which is in general not smooth, and is associated to a finite group of symplectic similitudes. We determine the weights of the Frobenius and most of the unipotent representations…
For a local field $F$ we consider tamely ramified principal series representations $V$ of $G={\rm GL}_{d+1}(F)$ with coefficients in a finite extension $K$ of ${\mathbb Q}_p$. Let $I_0$ be a pro-$p$-Iwahori subgroup in $G$, let ${\mathcal H}(G,I_0)$ denote the corresponding pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke algebra. If $V$ is locally unitary, i.e. if the ${\mathcal H}(G,I_0)$-module $V^{I_0}$ admits an integral structure, then such an integral structure can be chosen in a particularly well organized manner, in particular its modular reduction can be made completely explicit.
We give a lower bound for the sup-norm of an $L^2$-normalized newform in an irreducible, unitary, cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL_2$ over a number field. When the central character of $π$ is sufficiently ramified, this bound improves upon the trivial bound by a positive power of $N$ where $N$ is the norm of the conductor of $π$. This generalizes a result of Templier, who dealt with the special case when the conductor of the central character equals the conductor of the representation. We also make a conjecture about the true size of the sup-norm in the $N$-aspect that takes into account thi…
We analyze the geometry of the supersingular locus of the reduction modulo p of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary similitude group GU(1,n-1) over Q, in the case that p is ramified. We define a stratification of this locus and show that its incidence complex is closely related to a certain Bruhat-Tits simplicial complex. Each stratum is isomorphic to a Deligne-Lusztig variety associated to some symplectic group over F_p and some Coxeter element. The closure of each stratum is a normal projective variety with at most isolated singularities. The results are analogous to those of Vollaard/…
Rallis and Soudry have proven the stability under twists by highly ramified characters of the local gamma factor arising from the doubling method, in the case of a symplectic group or orthogonal group G over a local non-archimedean field F of characteristic zero, and a representation of G, which is not necessarily generic. This paper extends their arguments to show the stability in the case when G is a unitary group over a quadratic extension E of F, thereby completing the proof of the stability for classical groups. This stability property is important in Cogdell, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shahi…
Let $E$ be a two-dimensional étale algebra over a non-Archimedean local field $K$ of characteristic zero. We show that the unitary group of a non-degenerate hermitian lattice over $E$ is generated by symmetries and rescaled Eichler isometries. In the appendix we show that unless $E/K$ is a ramified dyadic field extension and the residue field has two elements, symmetries suffice.
This paper is the complementary work of [Cho16]. Ramified quadratic extensions $E/F$, where $F$ is a finite unramified field extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$, fall into two cases that we call $\textit{Case 1}$ and $\textit{Case 2}$. In the previous work [Cho16], we obtained the local density formula for a ramified hermitian lattice in $\textit{Case 1}$. In this paper, we obtain the local density formula for the remaining $\textit{Case 2}$, by constructing a smooth integral group scheme model for an appropriate unitary group. Consequently, this paper, combined with the paper [GY00] of W. T. Gan and …
In this article, we improve our main results from \emph{Chow groups and $L$-derivatives of automorphic motives for unitary groups} in two direction: First, we allow ramified places in the CM extension $E/F$ at which we consider representations that are spherical with respect to a certain special maximal compact subgroup, by formulating and proving an analogue of the Kudla--Rapoport conjecture for exotic smooth Rapoport--Zink spaces. Second, we lift the restriction on the components at split places of the automorphic representation, by proving a more general vanishing result on certain cohomolo…
The obstruction to the local-global principle for a hermitian lattice (L, H) can be quantified by computing the mass of (L, H). The mass formula expresses the mass of (L, H) as a product of local factors, called the local densities of (L, H). The local density formula is known except in the case of a ramified hermitian lattice of residue characteristic 2. Let F be a finite unramified field extension of Q_2. Ramified quadratic extensions E/F fall into two cases that we call Case 1 and Case 2. In this paper, we obtain the local density formula for a ramified hermitian lattice in Case 1, by const…
We show that the finite part of the adjoint $L$ function (including contributions from all nonarchimedean places, including ramified places) is holomorphic in $\Re(s) \ge 1/2$ for a cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_3$ over a number field. This improves the main result of [H16]. We obtain more general results for twisted adjoint $L$ functions of both $GL_3$ and quasisplit unitary groups. For unitary groups, we explicate the relationship between poles of twisted adjoint $L$ functions, endoscopy, and the structure of the stable base change lifting.
In the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we formulate a local conjecture (arithmetic transfer) in the case of an exotic smooth formal moduli space of p-divisible groups, associated to a unitary group relative to a ramified quadratic extension of a p-adic field. We prove our conjecture in the case of a unitary group in three variables.
In this paper we prove an explicit matching theorem for some Hecke elements in the case of (possibly ramified) cyclic base change for general linear groups over local fields of characteristic zero with odd residue characteristic under a mild assumption. A key observation, based on the works of Waldspurger and Ganapathy-Varma, is to regard the base change lifts with twisted endoscopic lifts and replace the condition for the matching orbital integrals with one for semi-simple descend in the twisted space according to Waldspurger's fundamental work "L'endoscopie tordue n'est pas si tordue".
We study the torsion cohomology classes of Shimura varieties of type Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor and we show that " up to an arbitrary place " one can raise them to an automorphic representation. In application, to any mod $l$ system of Hecke eigenvalues appearing in the $\bar{\mathbb F}_l$-cohomology of a Shimura's variety of Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor type, we associate a $\bar{\mathbb F}_l$-Galois representation which Frobenius eigenvalues are given by Hecke's. Compared to the highly more general construction of Scholze, we gain both the simplicity of the proof and the control at places ramified and…
Let G be a connected simple adjoint p-adic group not isomorphic to a projective linear group PGL(m,D) of a division algebra D, or an adjoint ramified unitary group of a split hermitian form in 3 variables. We prove that G admits an irreducible admissible supercuspidal (i.e. supersingular) representation over any field of characteristic p.
Based upon the general theory, developed by the author, on the parametrization of the irreducible representations of the hyper special compact groups corresponding to the regular adjoint orbit, supercuspidal representations of $SL_n(F)$ are explicitly constructed for which the formal degree conjecture and the root number conjecture are verified with respect to certain $L$-parameter defined, by means of Kaletha, that is, the local Langlands correspondence of tori and the Langlands-Schelstad procedure, by the data parametrizing the irreducible representations of the hyper special compact subgrou…
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and let $G$ be a finite abelian group of odd order. Given a $G$-Galois $K$-algebra $K_h$, let $A_h$ denote its square root of the inverse different, which exists by Hilbert's formula. If $K_h/K$ is weakly ramified, then the pair $(A_h,Tr_h)$ is locally $G$-isometric to $(\mathcal{O}_KG,t_K)$ and hence defines a class in the unitary class group $\mbox{UCl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. Here $Tr_h$ denotes the trace of $K_h/K$ and $t_K$ the symmetric bilinear form on $\mathcal{O}_KG$ for which $t_K(s,t)=δ_{st}$ for all $s,t\…
We prove three main results: all Langlands-Shahidi automorphic $L$-functions over function fields are rational; after twists by highly ramified characters our automorphic $L$-functions become polynomials; and, if $π$ is a globally generic cuspidal automorphic representation of a split classical group or a unitary group ${\bf G}_n$ and $τ$ a cuspidal (unitary) automorphic representation of a general linear group, then $L(s,π\times τ)$ is holomorphic for $\Re(s) > 1$ and has at most a simple pole at $s=1$. We also prove the holomorphy and non-vanishing of automorphic exterior square, symmetric s…
We describe the structure of the supersingular locus of a Shimura variety for a quaternionic unitary similitude group of degree $2$ over a ramified odd prime $p$ if the level at $p$ is given by a special maximal compact open subgroup. More precisely, we show that such a locus has purely $2$-dimensional, and every irreducible component is birational to the Fermat surface. Furthermore, we have an estimation of the numbers of connected and irreducible components. To prove these assertions, we completely determine the structure of the underlying reduced scheme of the Rapoport--Zink space for the q…
Given a totally real number field $F$ and a mod $p$ Galois representation $ρ\colon G_F\to \mathrm{GL}_2(\bar{\mathbf{F}}_p)$, we propose an explicit definition of the set of Serre weights $W(ρ)$ attached to $ρ$. We prove that our explicit definition is equivalent to previous definitions available in the literature. As a consequence we obtain an explicit Serre's modularity conjecture for Hilbert modular forms over totally real number fields. Our work generalises previous work of Dembélé--Diamond--Roberts and Calegari--Emerton--Gee--Mavrides which together give explicit and equivalent sets of we…
Given a Galois cover of curves X to Y with Galois group G which is totally ramified at a point x and unramified elsewhere, restriction to the punctured formal neighborhood of x induces a Galois extension of Laurent series rings k((u))/k((t)). If we fix a base curve Y , we can ask when a Galois extension of Laurent series rings comes from a global cover of Y in this way. Harbater proved that over a separably closed field, this local-to-global principle holds for any base curve if G is a p-group, and gave a condition for the uniqueness of such an extension. Using a generalization of Artin-Schrei…
In this short notes, we prove a stronger version of Theorem 0.6 in our previous paper arXiv:1709.01485: Given a smooth log scheme $(\mathcal{X} \supset \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)}$, each stable twisted $f$-periodic logarithmic Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ over the closed fiber $(X \supset D)_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ will correspond to a $\mathrm{PGL}_r(\mathbb{F}_{p^f})$-crystalline representation of $π_1((\mathcal{X} \setminus \mathcal{D})_{W(\mathbb{F}_q)[\frac{1}{p}]})$ such that its restriction to the geometric fundamental group is absolutely irreducible.
The Steinitz class of a number field extension K/k is an ideal class in the ring of integers O_k of k, which, together with the degree [K:k] of the extension determines the O_k-module structure of O_K. We call R_t(k,G) the classes which are Steinitz classes of a tamely ramified G-extension of k. We will say that those classes are realizable for the group G; it is conjectured that the set of realizable classes is always a group. In this paper we will develop some of the ideas contained in arXiv:0910.5080 to study some l-groups, where l is an odd prime number. In particular, together with [1] we…
In this paper we establish the endoscopic classification of tempered representations of quasi-split unitary groups over local fields, and the endoscopic classification of the discrete automorphic spectrum of quasi-split unitary groups over global number fields. The method is analogous to the work of Arthur on orthogonal and symplectic groups, based on the theory of endoscopy and the comparison of trace formulas on unitary groups and general linear groups.
We show the equality of the local Asai L-functions defined via the Rankin-Selberg method and the Langlands-Shahidi method for a square integrable representation of GL(n,E). As a consequence we characterise reducibility of certain induced representations of U(n,n), and the image of the base change map from U(n) to GL(n,E) in terms of GL(n,F)-distinguishedness.
We use relative trace formula to prove a non-vanishing result and a subconvexity result for the twisted base change $L$-functions associated to Hilbert modular forms whose local components at ramified places are some supercuspidal representations. This generalizes the work of Feigon and Whitehouse.
In this paper, the author proved that the base change lifting associated to a totally ramified extension of a non-archimedean local field coincides with a map coming from the close fields theory of Kazhdan under some conditions. As a corollary, we can construct a base change lifting for an APF extension of a mixed characteristic local field.
