The obstruction to the local-global principle for a hermitian lattice (L, H) can be quantified by computing the mass of (L, H). The mass formula expresses the mass of (L, H) as a product of local factors, called the local densities of (L, H). The local density formula is known except in the case of a ramified hermitian lattice of residue characteristic 2.
Let F be a finite unramified field extension of Q_2. Ramified quadratic extensions E/F fall into two cases that we call Case 1 and Case 2. In this paper, we obtain the local density formula for a ramified hermitian lattice in Case 1, by constructing a smooth integral group scheme model for an appropriate unitary group. Consequently, this paper, combined with the paper of W. T. Gan and J.-K. Yu, allows the computation of the mass formula for a hermitian lattice (L, H) in Case 1.
Let O be a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic and with finite residue field k. We study a natural morphism between the Greenberg algebra of O and the special fiber of the scheme of ramified Witt vectors over O. It is a universal homeomorphism with pro-infinitesimal kernel that can be explicitly described in some cases.
This paper is the complementary work of [Cho16]. Ramified quadratic extensions $E/F$, where $F$ is a finite unramified field extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$, fall into two cases that we call $\textit{Case 1}$ and $\textit{Case 2}$. In the previous work [Cho16], we obtained the local density formula for a ramified hermitian lattice in $\textit{Case 1}$. In this paper, we obtain the local density formula for the remaining $\textit{Case 2}$, by constructing a smooth integral group scheme model for an appropriate unitary group. Consequently, this paper, combined with the paper [GY00] of W. T. Gan and …
Assuming a certain form of resolution of singularities, we prove a general existential Ax-Kochen/Ershov principle for tamely ramified fields in all characteristics. This specializes to well-known results in residue characteristic $0$ and unramified mixed characteristic. It also encompasses the conditional existential decidability results known for $\mathbb{F}_p(\!(t)\!)$ and its finite extensions, due to Denef-Schoutens. On the other hand, it also applies to the setting of infinite ramification, providing us with an abundance of infinitely ramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $\mathbb{F}_…
Let K be a discretly henselian field whose residue field is separably closed. Answering a question raised by G. Prasad, we show that a semisimple K-- group G is quasi-split if and only if it quasi--splits after a finite tamely ramified extension of K.
In this paper we prove an explicit matching theorem for some Hecke elements in the case of (possibly ramified) cyclic base change for general linear groups over local fields of characteristic zero with odd residue characteristic under a mild assumption. A key observation, based on the works of Waldspurger and Ganapathy-Varma, is to regard the base change lifts with twisted endoscopic lifts and replace the condition for the matching orbital integrals with one for semi-simple descend in the twisted space according to Waldspurger's fundamental work "L'endoscopie tordue n'est pas si tordue".
Let K be a local field of characteristic p with perfect residue field k. In this paper we find a set of representatives for the k-isomorphism classes of totally ramified separable extensions L/K of degree p. This extends work of Klopsch, who found representatives for the k-isomorphism classes of totally ramified Galois extensions L/K of degree p.
In this article, we study the structure of finitely ramified mixed characteristic valued fields. For any two complete discrete valued fields $K_1$ and $K_2$ of mixed characteristic with perfect residue fields, we show that if the $n$-th residue rings are isomorphic for each $n\ge 1$, then $K_1$ and $K_2$ are isometric and isomorphic. More generally, for $n_1\ge 1$, there is $n_2$ depending only on the ramification indices of $K_1$ and $K_2$ such that any homomorphism from the $n_1$-th residue ring of $K_1$ to the $n_2$-th residue ring of $K_2$ can be lifted to a homomorphism between the valuat…
Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of complete local fields with finite residue fields and let G=Gal(L/K). Let G_1 and G_2 be the first and second ramification groups. Thus L/K is tamely ramified when G_1 is trivial and we say that L/K is weakly ramified when G_2 is trivial. Let O_L be the valuation ring of L and let P_L be its maximal ideal. We show that if L/K is weakly ramified and n is congruent to 1 mod |G_1| then P_L^n is free over the group ring O_K[G], and we construct an explicit generating element. Under the additional assumption that L/K is wildly ramified, we then show that every…
Let $L/K$ be an extension of complete discrete valuation fields, and assume that the residue field of $K$ is perfect and of positive characteristic. The residue field of $L$ is not assumed to be perfect. In this paper, we prove a formula for the Swan conductor of the image of a character $χ\in H^1(K, \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})$ in $H^1(L, \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})$ for $χ$ sufficiently ramified. Further, we define generalizations $ψ_{L/K}^{\mathrm{ab}}$ and $ψ_{L/K}^{\mathrm{AS}}$ of the classical Hasse-Herbrand $ψ$-function and prove a formula for $ψ_{L/K}^{\mathrm{ab}}(t)$ for sufficiently large $t…
Let $F$ be a number field, $\mathcal{O}$ be a domain with fraction field $\mathcal{K}$ of characteristic zero and $ρ: \mathrm{Gal}(\overline F/F) \to \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathcal{O})$ be a representation such that $ρ\otimes\overline{\mathcal{K}}$ is semisimple. If $\mathcal{O}$ admits a finite monomorphism from a power series ring with coefficients in a $p$-adic integer ring (resp. $\mathcal{O}$ is an affinoid algebra over a $p$-adic number field) and $ρ$ is continuous with respect to the maximal ideal adic topology (resp. the Banach algebra topology), then we prove that the set of ramified primes o…
We give an intrinsic parametrisation of the set of tamely ramified extensions of a local field with finite residue field and bring to the fore the role played by group cohomology. We show that two natural definitions of the cohomology class of a tamely ramified finite galoisian extension coincide, and can be recovered from the parameter. We also give an elementary proof of Serre's mass formula in the tame case and in the simplest wild case, and we classify tame galoisian extensions of degree the cube of a prime.
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field with residue class field $k$, where both are of positive characteristic $p$. Then the group of wild automorphisms of $K$ can be identified with the group under composition of formal power series over $k$ with no constant term and $X$-coefficient $1$. Under the hypothesis that $p > b^2$, we compute the first nontrivial coefficient of the $p$th iterate of a power series over $k$ of the form $f = X + \sum_{i \geq 1} a_iX^{b+i}$. As a result, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an automorphism to be ``$b$-ramified,'' having lower ramifi…
Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_\mathbb{K})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper we determine its maximal discrete extension in $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$, which coincides with the normalizer of $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$. The description involves the $n$-torsion subgroup of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{K}$. This group is defined over a particular number field $\widehat{\mathbb{K}}_n$ and we can describe the ramified primes in it. In the case $n=2$ we give an explicit description, which invol…
Let X be a noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, having 2 invertible in its ring of regular functions, an ample family of line bundles, and a global bound on the virtual mod-2 cohomological dimensions of its residue fields. We prove that the comparison map from the hermitian K-theory of X to the homotopy fixed points of K-theory under the natural Z/2-action is a 2-adic equivalence in general, and an integral equivalence when X has no formally real residue field. We also show that the comparison map between the higher Grothendieck-Witt (hermitian K-) theory of X and its étale version is …

Let $E$ be a two-dimensional étale algebra over a non-Archimedean local field $K$ of characteristic zero. We show that the unitary group of a non-degenerate hermitian lattice over $E$ is generated by symmetries and rescaled Eichler isometries. In the appendix we show that unless $E/K$ is a ramified dyadic field extension and the residue field has two elements, symmetries suffice.
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field whose residue field is perfect and of positive characteristic, let $X$ be a connected, proper scheme over $\mathcal{O}_K$, and let $U$ be the complement in $X$ of a divisor with simple normal crossings. Assume that the pair $(X,U)$ is strictly semi-stable over $\mathcal{O}_K$ of relative dimension one and $K$ is of equal characteristic. We prove that, for any smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf $\mathscr{G}$ on $U$ of rank one, at most tamely ramified on the generic fiber, if the ramification of $\mathscr{G}$ is bounded by $t+$ for the logarithmic upper rami…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valued field with residue field $k$ and $F$ the function field of a curve over $K$. Let $A \in {}_2Br(F)$ be a central simple algebra with an involution $σ$ of any kind and $F_0 =F^σ$. Let $h$ be an hermitian space over $(A, σ)$ and $G = SU(A, σ, h)$ if $σ$ is of first kind and $G = U(A, σ, h)$ if $σ$ is of second kind. Suppose that $\text{char}(k) \neq 2$ and ind$(A)\leq 4$. Then we prove that projective homogeneous spaces under $G$ over $F_0$ satisfy a local-global principle for rational points with respect to discrete valuations of $F$.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois, totally ramified $p$-extension of complete local fields with perfect residue fields of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, we give conditions, valid for any Galois $p$-group $G={Gal}(L/K)$ (abelian or not) and for $K$ of either possible characteristic (0 or $p$), that are sufficient for the existence of a Galois scaffold. The existence of a Galois scaffold makes it possible to address questions of integral Galois module structure, which is done in a separate paper. But since our conditions can be difficult to check, we specialize to elementary abelian extensions …
