Throughout this paper, k is a number field. We fix a quadratic extension k_1=k(a_0) of k, where a_0=sqrt(B_0) for a certain B_0 in k^\times/(k^\times)^2. In this paper, we consider the zeta function defined for the space of pairs of binary Hermitian forms. This is the prehomogeneous vector space we discussed in section 2 [1] and is a non-split form of the D_4 case in [4].
The purpose of this paper is to determine the principal part of the adjusted zeta function. Our main result is Theorem (8.15). Our case resembles the space of pairs of binary quadratic forms which we discussed in Chapter 5 [5]. However, the meaning of the problem, the pole structure of the adjusted zeta function, and the adjusting terms are different from those of the above case. The zeta function of our case is a counting function of the class number times the regulator of fields of the form k(sqrt(B_0),sqrt(B)) with B_0 fixed and B in k_, whereas the zeta function for the above case is essentially the same as the space of binary quadratic forms. Our case is a first example where we need two adjusting terms whereas the adjusting term of the above case was essentially the same as that of the space of binary quadratic forms. We will not prove the meromorphic continuation of the adjusting terms in this paper. For the sake of the density theorem, we still get the residue of the rightmost pole of the zeta function (without adjusting). If this space appears in a bigger prehomogeneous vector space. So the principal part formula of the adjusted zeta function should be enough for most applications. We have yet to obtain the corresponding density theorem because we have not carried out the local theory.
Previously the authors proved subconvexity of Shintani's zeta function enumerating class numbers of binary cubic forms. Here we return to prove subconvexity of the Maass form twisted version.
A Shintani-Katok-Sarnak type correspondence for Maass cusp forms of level $N$ is shown to be derived from analytic properties of prehomogeneous zeta functions whose coefficients involve periods of Maass forms.
We prove that the Shintani zeta function associated to the space of binary cubic forms cannot be written as a finite sum of Euler products. Our proof also extends to several closely related Dirichlet series. This answers a question of Wright in the negative.
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
Enumerating integral orbits in prehomogeneous vector spaces plays an important role in arithmetic statistics. We describe a method of proving subconvexity of the zeta function enumerating the integral orbits, illustrated by proving a subconvex estimate for the Shintani $ζ$ function enumerating class numbers of binary cubic forms.
In this paper, we give an explicit formula of the Shintani double zeta functions with any ramification in the most general setting of adeles over an arbitrary number field. Three applications of the explicit formula are given. First, we obtain a functional equation satisfied by the Shintani double zeta functions in addition to Shintani's functional equations. Second, we establish the holomorphicity of a certain Dirichlet series generalizing a result by Ibukiyama and Saito. This Dirichlet series occurs in the study of unipotent contributions of the geometric side of the Arthur-Selberg trace for…
We introduce the zeta function of the prehomogenous vector space of binary cubic forms, twisted by the real analytic Eisenstein series. We prove the meromorphic continuation of this zeta function and identify its poles and their residues. We also identify the poles and residues of the zeta function when restricted to irreducible binary cubic forms. This zeta function can be used to prove the equidistribution of the lattice shape of cubic rings.
The class of Riemann zeta distribution is one of the classical classes of probability distributions on R. Multidimensional Shintani zeta function is introduced and its definable probability distributions on R^d are studied. This class contains some fundamental probability distributions such as binomial and Poisson distributions. The relation with multidimensional polynomial Euler product, which induces multidimensional infinitely divisible distributions on R^d, is also studied.
It is known that Shintani zeta functions, which generalise multiple zeta functions, extend to meromorphic functions with poles on affine hyperplanes. We refine this result in showing that the poles lie on hyperplanes parallel to the facets of certain convex polyhedra associated to the defining matrix for the Shintani zeta function. Explicitly, the latter are the Newton polytopes of the polynomials induced by the columns of the underlying matrix. We then prove that the coefficients of the equation which describes the hyperplanes in the canonical basis are either zero or one, similar to the pole…
In this paper, we introduce the normalized Shintani L-function of several variables by an integral representation and prove its functional equation. The Shintani L-function is a generalization to several variables of the Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function and the functional equation given in this paper is a generalization of the functional equation of Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function. In addition to the functional equation, we give special values of the normalized Shintani L-function at non-positive integers and some positive integers.
The Shintani cocycle on $\GL_n(\Q)$, as constructed by Hill, gives a cohomological interpretation of special values of zeta functions for totally real fields of degree $n$. We give an explicit criterion for a specialization of the Shintani cocycle to be $p$-adically interpolable. As a corollary, we recover the results of Deligne-Ribet, Cassou Noguès and Barsky on the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to totally real fields.
We define the class of normalized Shintani L-functions of several variables. Unlike Shintani zeta functions, the normalized Shintani L-function is a holomorphic function. Moreover it satisfies a good functional equation. We show that any Hecke L-function of a totally real field can be expressed as a diagonal part of some normalized Shintani L-function of several variables. This gives a good several variables generalization of a Hecke L-function of a totally real field. This also gives a new proof of the functional equation of the Hecke L-function of a totally real field.
We investigate the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous spaces, the example under consideration is the set of $2 \times 2\times 2$ integer cubes. We show that there are three relative invariants under a certain parabolic group action, they all have arithmetic nature and completely determine the equivalence classes. We show that the associated Shintani zeta function coincides with the $A_3$ Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. Finally, we show that the set of semi-stable integer orbits maps finitely and surjectively to a certain moduli space.
This article is a companion to several works of the author and others on the arithmetic of automorphic forms for GSp(4), and their associated L-functions and Galois representations. These works require, at various points, an input from smooth representation theory over p-adic local fields: the computation of values of the unique trilinear form on an unramified representation of GSp(4) x GL(2) x GL(2) invariant under the diagonal GL(2) x GL(2), for various different input data. In this note, we carry out these local computations, using a general formula for Shintani functions due to Gejima.
In this paper, we give a dimension formula for spaces of Siegel cusp forms of general degree with respect to neat arithmetic subgroups. The formula was conjectured before by several researchers. The dimensions are expressed by special values of Shintani zeta functions for spaces of symmetric matrices at non-positive integers. This formula was given by Shintani for only a small part of the geometric side of the trace formula. To be precise, it is the contribution of unipotent elements corresponding to the partitions $(2^j,1^{2n-2j})$, where $n$ denotes the degree and $0\leq j \leq n$. Hence, ou…
We study the non-semisimple terms in the geometric side of the Arthur trace formula for the split symplectic similitude group or the split symplectic group of rank 2 over any algebraic number field. In particular, we show that the coefficients of unipotent orbital integrals are expressed by the Dedekind zeta function, Hecke L-functions, and the Shintani zeta function for the space of binary quadratic forms.
We study the space of binary cubic and quadratic forms over the ring of integers $O$ of an algebraic number field $k$. By applying the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces founded by M. Sato and T. Shintani, we can associate the zeta functions for these spaces. Applying these zeta functions, we derive some density theorems on the distributions of discriminants of cubic algebras of $O$. In the case $k$ is a quadratic field, we give a correction term as well as the main term. These are generalizations of Shintani's asymptotic formulae of the mean values of class numbers of binary cubic forms o…
Let $ζ(s,C)$ be the partial zeta function attached to a ray class C of a real quadratic field. We study this zeta function at s=1 and s=0, combining some ideas and methods due to Zagier and Shintani. The main results are (1) a generalization of Zagier's formula for the constant term of the Laurent expansion at s=1, (2) some expressions for the value and the first derivative at s=0, related to the theory of continued fractions, and (3) a simple description of the behavior of Shintani's invariant X(C), which is related to $ζ'(0,C)$, when we change the signature of C.
We define a cocycle on Gln using Shintani's method. It is closely related to cocycles defined earlier by Solomon and Hill, but differs in that the cocycle property is achieved through the introduction of an auxiliary perturbation vector Q. As a corollary of our result we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Diaz y Diaz and Friedman on signed fundamental domains, and give a cohomological reformulation of Shintani's proof of the Klingen-Siegel rationality theorem on partial zeta functions of totally real fields. Next we prove that the cohomology class represented by our Shintani cocycle is essenti…
We define zeta functions for the adjoint action of GL(n) on its Lie algebra and study their analytic properties. For n<4 we are able to fully analyse these functions, and recover the Shintani zeta function for the prehomogeneous vector space of binary quadratic forms for n=2. Our construction naturally yields a regularisation, which is necessary for the improvement of the properties of these zeta function, in particular for the analytic continuation if n>2. We further obtain upper and lower bounds on the mean value X^{-5/2}\sum_{E} \res_{s=1}ζ_E(s) as X->\infty, where E runs over totally real …
In this paper we investigate a result of Ueno on the modularity of generating series associated to the zeta functions of binary Hermitian forms previously studied by Elstrodt et al. We improve his result by showing that the generating series are Eisenstein series. As a consequence we obtain an explicit formula for the special values of zeta functions associated with binary Hermitian forms.
In this paper, we show that any polynomial of zeta or $L$-functions with some conditions has infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. This general result has abundant applications. By using the main result, we prove that the zeta-functions associated to symmetric matrices treated by Ibukiyama and Saito, certain spectral zeta-functions and the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions have infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. Moreover, we show that the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Riemann zeta-function is equivalent to the Lindelöf hypothesis for zeta-functions mentioned a…
In previous work, Ohno conjectured, and Nakagawa proved, relations between the counting functions of certain cubic fields. These relations may be viewed as complements to the Scholz reflection principle, and Ohno and Nakagawa deduced them as consequences of `extra functional equations' involving the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space of binary cubic forms. In the present paper we generalize their result by proving a similar identity relating certain degree l fields with Galois groups D_l and F_l respectively, for any odd prime l, and in particular we give ano…
Using as starting point a classical integral representation of a L-function we define a familly of two variables extended functions which are eigenfunctions of a Hermitian operator (having imaginary part of zeros as eigenvalues). This Hermitian operator can take also other forms, more symetric. In the case of particular L-functions, like Zeta function or Dirichlet L-functions, the eigenfunctions defined for this operator have symmetry properties. Moreover, for s zero fo Zeta function (or Dirichlet L-function), the associated eigenfunction has a specific property (a part of eigenfunction is can…
A Hamiltonian operator $\hat H$ is constructed with the property that if the eigenfunctions obey a suitable boundary condition, then the associated eigenvalues correspond to the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The classical limit of $\hat H$ is $2xp$, which is consistent with the Berry-Keating conjecture. While $\hat H$ is not Hermitian in the conventional sense, ${\rm i}{\hat H}$ is ${\cal PT}$ symmetric with a broken ${\cal PT}$ symmetry, thus allowing for the possibility that all eigenvalues of $\hat H$ are real. A heuristic analysis is presented for the construction of the m…
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
Let X be a noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, having 2 invertible in its ring of regular functions, an ample family of line bundles, and a global bound on the virtual mod-2 cohomological dimensions of its residue fields. We prove that the comparison map from the hermitian K-theory of X to the homotopy fixed points of K-theory under the natural Z/2-action is a 2-adic equivalence in general, and an integral equivalence when X has no formally real residue field. We also show that the comparison map between the higher Grothendieck-Witt (hermitian K-) theory of X and its étale version is …
