We introduce the zeta function of the prehomogenous vector space of binary cubic forms, twisted by the real analytic Eisenstein series. We prove the meromorphic continuation of this zeta function and identify its poles and their residues. We also identify the poles and residues of the zeta function when restricted to irreducible binary cubic forms. This zeta function can be used to prove the equidistribution of the lattice shape of cubic rings.
We compute the p-adic L-function (in the sense of Pollack-Stevens and Bellaiche) of the "evil twin" Eisenstein series. We use Solomon's Shintani cocycle to construct a p-adic Shintani modular symbol, and show how to specialize this modular symbol to overconvergent modular symbols with the same p-adic L-function as evil/critical-slope Eisenstein series. This gives a new proof of recent results of Bellaiche and Dasgupta.
Previously the authors proved subconvexity of Shintani's zeta function enumerating class numbers of binary cubic forms. Here we return to prove subconvexity of the Maass form twisted version.
We define a cocycle on Gln using Shintani's method. It is closely related to cocycles defined earlier by Solomon and Hill, but differs in that the cocycle property is achieved through the introduction of an auxiliary perturbation vector Q. As a corollary of our result we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Diaz y Diaz and Friedman on signed fundamental domains, and give a cohomological reformulation of Shintani's proof of the Klingen-Siegel rationality theorem on partial zeta functions of totally real fields. Next we prove that the cohomology class represented by our Shintani cocycle is essenti…
A Shintani-Katok-Sarnak type correspondence for Maass cusp forms of level $N$ is shown to be derived from analytic properties of prehomogeneous zeta functions whose coefficients involve periods of Maass forms.
We prove that the Shintani zeta function associated to the space of binary cubic forms cannot be written as a finite sum of Euler products. Our proof also extends to several closely related Dirichlet series. This answers a question of Wright in the negative.
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
Enumerating integral orbits in prehomogeneous vector spaces plays an important role in arithmetic statistics. We describe a method of proving subconvexity of the zeta function enumerating the integral orbits, illustrated by proving a subconvex estimate for the Shintani $ζ$ function enumerating class numbers of binary cubic forms.
In this paper, we give an explicit formula of the Shintani double zeta functions with any ramification in the most general setting of adeles over an arbitrary number field. Three applications of the explicit formula are given. First, we obtain a functional equation satisfied by the Shintani double zeta functions in addition to Shintani's functional equations. Second, we establish the holomorphicity of a certain Dirichlet series generalizing a result by Ibukiyama and Saito. This Dirichlet series occurs in the study of unipotent contributions of the geometric side of the Arthur-Selberg trace for…
In this paper, we introduce the normalized Shintani L-function of several variables by an integral representation and prove its functional equation. The Shintani L-function is a generalization to several variables of the Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function and the functional equation given in this paper is a generalization of the functional equation of Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function. In addition to the functional equation, we give special values of the normalized Shintani L-function at non-positive integers and some positive integers.
The class of Riemann zeta distribution is one of the classical classes of probability distributions on R. Multidimensional Shintani zeta function is introduced and its definable probability distributions on R^d are studied. This class contains some fundamental probability distributions such as binomial and Poisson distributions. The relation with multidimensional polynomial Euler product, which induces multidimensional infinitely divisible distributions on R^d, is also studied.
It is known that Shintani zeta functions, which generalise multiple zeta functions, extend to meromorphic functions with poles on affine hyperplanes. We refine this result in showing that the poles lie on hyperplanes parallel to the facets of certain convex polyhedra associated to the defining matrix for the Shintani zeta function. Explicitly, the latter are the Newton polytopes of the polynomials induced by the columns of the underlying matrix. We then prove that the coefficients of the equation which describes the hyperplanes in the canonical basis are either zero or one, similar to the pole…
The Shintani cocycle on $\GL_n(\Q)$, as constructed by Hill, gives a cohomological interpretation of special values of zeta functions for totally real fields of degree $n$. We give an explicit criterion for a specialization of the Shintani cocycle to be $p$-adically interpolable. As a corollary, we recover the results of Deligne-Ribet, Cassou Noguès and Barsky on the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to totally real fields.
We define the class of normalized Shintani L-functions of several variables. Unlike Shintani zeta functions, the normalized Shintani L-function is a holomorphic function. Moreover it satisfies a good functional equation. We show that any Hecke L-function of a totally real field can be expressed as a diagonal part of some normalized Shintani L-function of several variables. This gives a good several variables generalization of a Hecke L-function of a totally real field. This also gives a new proof of the functional equation of the Hecke L-function of a totally real field.
This work is an example driven overview article of recent works on the connection of multiple zeta values, modular forms and q-analogues of multiple zeta values given by multiple Eisenstein series.
We study the double shuffle relations satisfied by the double zeta values of level 2, and introduce the double Eisenstein series of level 2 which satisfy the double shuffle relations. We connect the double Eisenstein series to modular forms of level 2.
We study a certain class of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, which appear in the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. Studying their algebraic structure and their derivatives we propose conjectured explicit formulas for the derivatives of double and triple Eisenstein series.
In this article, we obtain a transformation formula for the higher power of odd zeta values, which generalizes Ramanujan's formula for odd zeta values. We have also investigated many important applications, which in turn provide generalizations of the transformation formula of the Eisenstein series, Dedekind eta function etc.
In this survey article, we discuss the algebraic structure of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, which are closely related to derivatives of Eisenstein series. Moreover, we introduce the formal double Eisenstein space, which generalizes the formal double zeta space of Gangl, Kaneko, and Zagier. Using the algebraic structure of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, we will present a realization of this space. As an application, we will obtain purely combinatorial proofs of identities among (quasi-)modular forms.
We introduce an integral version of the Eisenstein cocycle. As applications we prove a conjecture of Gross regarding the "order of vanishing" of Stickelberger elements relative to an abelian tower of fields and give a cohomological construction of the conjectural Gross--Stark units.
New expressions are given for the Fourier expansions of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series with weight $k$. Among other applications, this leads to non-holomorphic analogs of formulas of Ramanujan, Grosswald and Berndt containing Eichler integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series.
We describe a decomposition algorithm for elliptic multiple zeta values, which amounts to the construction of an injective map $ψ$ from the algebra of elliptic multiple zeta values to a space of iterated Eisenstein integrals. We give many examples of this decomposition, and conclude with a short discussion about the image of $ψ$. It turns out that the failure of surjectivity of $ψ$ is in some sense governed by period polynomials of modular forms.
In this paper we investigate a result of Ueno on the modularity of generating series associated to the zeta functions of binary Hermitian forms previously studied by Elstrodt et al. We improve his result by showing that the generating series are Eisenstein series. As a consequence we obtain an explicit formula for the special values of zeta functions associated with binary Hermitian forms.
We investigate the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous spaces, the example under consideration is the set of $2 \times 2\times 2$ integer cubes. We show that there are three relative invariants under a certain parabolic group action, they all have arithmetic nature and completely determine the equivalence classes. We show that the associated Shintani zeta function coincides with the $A_3$ Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. Finally, we show that the set of semi-stable integer orbits maps finitely and surjectively to a certain moduli space.
In their seminal paper "Double zeta values and modular forms" Gangl, Kaneko and Zagier defined a double Eisenstein series and used it to study the relations between double zeta values. One of their key ideas is to study the formal double space and apply the double shuffle relations. They also proved the double shuffle relations for the double Eisenstein series. More recently, Kaneko and Tasaka extended the double Eisenstein series to level 2, proved its double shuffle relations and studied the double zeta values of level 2. Motivated by the above works, we define in this paper the correspondin…
This note contains an attempt to relate Hecke's presentation of an ideal class zeta function in a real quadratic field as an integral of the nonholomorphic Eisenstein series along the loop on modular curve and Zagier's decomposition of this zeta function into the sum of zeta functions of indefinite quadratic forms. (See D.Zagier, A Kronecker limit formula for real quadratic field.) It is a preliminary version.
We consider certain double series of Eisenstein type involving hyperbolic-sine functions. We define certain generalized Hurwitz numbers, in terms of which we evaluate those double series. Our main results can be regarded as a certain generalization of well-known results of Hurwitz, Herglotz, Katayama and so on. Our results also include recent formulas of the third-named author which are double analogues of the formulas of Cauchy, Mellin, Ramanujan, Berndt and so on, about certain Dirichlet series involving hyperbolic functions. As an application, we give some evaluation formulas for $q$-zeta f…
In this paper, we give a dimension formula for spaces of Siegel cusp forms of general degree with respect to neat arithmetic subgroups. The formula was conjectured before by several researchers. The dimensions are expressed by special values of Shintani zeta functions for spaces of symmetric matrices at non-positive integers. This formula was given by Shintani for only a small part of the geometric side of the trace formula. To be precise, it is the contribution of unipotent elements corresponding to the partitions $(2^j,1^{2n-2j})$, where $n$ denotes the degree and $0\leq j \leq n$. Hence, ou…
We study the space of binary cubic and quadratic forms over the ring of integers $O$ of an algebraic number field $k$. By applying the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces founded by M. Sato and T. Shintani, we can associate the zeta functions for these spaces. Applying these zeta functions, we derive some density theorems on the distributions of discriminants of cubic algebras of $O$. In the case $k$ is a quadratic field, we give a correction term as well as the main term. These are generalizations of Shintani's asymptotic formulae of the mean values of class numbers of binary cubic forms o…
Brown showed that the affine ring of the motivic path torsor $π_1^{\text{mot}}(\mathbb{P}^1 \backslash \left\{0,1,\infty\right\}, \vec{1}_0, -\vec{1}_1)$, whose periods are multiple zeta values, generates the Tannakian category $\mathsf{MT}(\mathbb{Z})$ of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$. Brown also introduced multiple modular values, which are periods of the relative completion of the fundamental group of the moduli stack $\mathcal{M}_{1,1}$ of elliptic curves. We prove that all motivic multiple zeta values may be expressed as $\mathbb{Q}[2 πi]$-linear combinations of motivic iterated Ei…
Eisenstein polynomials, which were defined by Oura, are analogues of the concept of an Eisenstein series. Oura conjectured that there exist some analogous properties between Eisenstein series and Eisenstein polynomials. In this paper, we provide new analogous properties of Eisenstein polynomials and zeta polynomials. These properties are finite analogies of certain properties of Eisenstein series.
Let $ζ(s,C)$ be the partial zeta function attached to a ray class C of a real quadratic field. We study this zeta function at s=1 and s=0, combining some ideas and methods due to Zagier and Shintani. The main results are (1) a generalization of Zagier's formula for the constant term of the Laurent expansion at s=1, (2) some expressions for the value and the first derivative at s=0, related to the theory of continued fractions, and (3) a simple description of the behavior of Shintani's invariant X(C), which is related to $ζ'(0,C)$, when we change the signature of C.
Multiple Eisenstein series are holomorphic functions in the complex upper-half plane, which can be seen as a crossbreed between multiple zeta values and classical Eisenstein series. They were originally defined by Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier in 2006, and since then, many variants and regularizations of them have been studied. They give a natural bridge between the world of modular forms and multiple zeta values. In this note, we give a new algebraic interpretation of stuffle regularized multiple Eisenstein series based on the Hopf algebra structure of the harmonic algebra introduced by Hoffman.
Throughout this paper, k is a number field. We fix a quadratic extension k_1=k(a_0) of k, where a_0=sqrt(B_0) for a certain B_0 in k^\times/(k^\times)^2. In this paper, we consider the zeta function defined for the space of pairs of binary Hermitian forms. This is the prehomogeneous vector space we discussed in section 2 [1] and is a non-split form of the D_4 case in [4]. The purpose of this paper is to determine the principal part of the adjusted zeta function. Our main result is Theorem (8.15). Our case resembles the space of pairs of binary quadratic forms which we discussed in Chapter 5 [5…
Subconvexity bounds are proved for general Epstein zeta functions of k-ary quadratic forms. This is related to sup-norm bounds for Eisenstein series on GL(k), and the exact sup-norm exponent is determined to be (k-2)/8 for k >= 2. In particular, if $k$ is odd, this exponent is not in Z/4, which shows that Sarnak's purity conjecture does not hold for Eisenstein series.
In the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves, the Weierstrass $zeta$ function (which is essentially an antiderivative of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function) plays a prominent role. Although it is not an elliptic function, Eisenstein constructed a simple (non-holomorphic) completion of this form which is doubly periodic. This theorem has begun to play an important role in the theory of harmonic Maass forms, and was crucial to work of Guerzhoy as well as Alfes, Griffin, Ono, and the author. In particular, this simple completion of $ζ$ provides a powerful method to construct harmonic Maass…
Eisenstein polynomials, which were defined by the second author, are analogues of the concept of an Eisenstein series. The second author conjectured that there exist some analogous properties between Eisenstein series and Eisenstein polynomials. In the previous paper, the first author provided new analogous properties of Eisenstein polynomials and zeta polynomials for the Type II case. In this paper, the analogous properties of Eisenstein polynomials and zeta polynomials are shown to also hold for the Type I, Type III, and Type IV cases. These properties are finite analogies of certain propert…
This paper provides an introduction to Eisenstein measures, a powerful tool for constructing certain $p$-adic $L$-functions. First seen in Serre's realization of $p$-adic Dedekind zeta functions associated to totally real fields, Eisenstein measures provide a way to extend the style of congruences Kummer observed for values of the Riemann zeta function (so-called {\em Kummer congruences}) to certain other $L$-functions. In addition to tracing key developments, we discuss some challenges that arise in more general settings, concluding with some that remain open.
In this paper, transformation formulas for a large class of Eisenstein series defined by \[ G(z,s;A_α,B_β;r_{1},r_{2})=\sum\limits_{m,n=-\infty}^{\infty }\ \hspace{-0.19in}^{^{\prime}}\frac{f(αm)f^{\ast}(βn)} {((m+r_{1})z+n+r_{2})^{s}},\text{ }\operatorname{Re}(s)>2,\text{ }\operatorname{Im}(z)>0 \] are investigated for $s=1-r$, $r\in\mathbb{N}$. Here $\left\{ f(n)\right\}$ and $\left\{ f^{\ast}(n)\right\}$, $-\infty<n<\infty$ are sequences of complex numbers with period $k>0$, and $A_α=\left\{ f(αn)\right\} $ and $B_β=\left\{ f^{\ast}(βn)\right\}$, $α,β\in\mathbb{Z}$. Appearing in the transfo…
We define certain higher-dimensional Dedekind sums that generalize the classical Dedekind-Rademacher sums, and show how to compute them effectively using a generalization of the continued-fraction algorithm. We present two applications. First, we show how to express special values of partial zeta functions associated to totally real number fields in terms of these sums via the Eisenstein cocycle introduced by the second author. Hence we obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for computing these special values. Second, we show how to use our techniques to compute certain special values of the Witte…

In this paper, using p-adic integration with values in spaces of modular forms, we construct the p-adic analogue of Weil's elliptic functions according to Eisenstein in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and and Kronecker". This construction extends Serre's p-adic family of Eisenstein series in "Formes modulaires et fonctions zêta p-adiques". We show that the power series expansion of Weil's elliptic functions also exists in the p-adic case.
We define zeta functions for the adjoint action of GL(n) on its Lie algebra and study their analytic properties. For n<4 we are able to fully analyse these functions, and recover the Shintani zeta function for the prehomogeneous vector space of binary quadratic forms for n=2. Our construction naturally yields a regularisation, which is necessary for the improvement of the properties of these zeta function, in particular for the analytic continuation if n>2. We further obtain upper and lower bounds on the mean value X^{-5/2}\sum_{E} \res_{s=1}ζ_E(s) as X->\infty, where E runs over totally real …
Let K/F be a quadratic extension of number fields. After developing a theory of the Eisenstein series over F, we prove a formula which expresses a partial zeta function of K as a certain integral of the Eisenstein series. As an application, we obtain a limit formula of Kronecker's type which relates the 0-th Laurent coefficients at s=1 of zeta functions of K and F.

Let p > 2 be a prime, let n > m > 0. Let pi_n be the norm of zeta_{p^n} - 1 under C_{p-1}, so that Z_(p)[pi_n] | Z_(p) is a purely ramified extension of discrete valuation rings of degree p^{n-1}. The minimal polynomial of pi_n over Q(pi_m) is an Eisenstein polynomial; we give lower bounds for its coefficient valuations at pi_m. The function field analogue, as introduced by Carlitz and Hayes, is studied as well.
In this paper, we show that any polynomial of zeta or $L$-functions with some conditions has infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. This general result has abundant applications. By using the main result, we prove that the zeta-functions associated to symmetric matrices treated by Ibukiyama and Saito, certain spectral zeta-functions and the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta-functions have infinitely many complex zeros off the critical line. Moreover, we show that the Lindelöf hypothesis for the Riemann zeta-function is equivalent to the Lindelöf hypothesis for zeta-functions mentioned a…
We introduce a new family of real analytic modular forms on the upper half plane. They are arguably the simplest class of `mixed' versions of modular forms of level one and are constructed out of real and imaginary parts of iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series. They form an algebra of functions satisfying many properties analogous to classical holomorphic modular forms. In particular, they admit expansions in $q, \overline{q}$ and $\log |q|$ involving only rational numbers and single-valued multiple zeta values. The first non-trivial functions in this class are real analytic Eis…
We discuss computation of the special values of partial zeta functions associated to totally real number fields. The main tool is the \emph{Eisenstein cocycle} $Ψ$, a group cocycle for $GL_{n} (\Z )$; the special values are computed as periods of $Ψ$, and are expressed in terms of generalized Dedekind sums. We conclude with some numerical examples for cubic and quartic fields of small discriminant.
