We study the space of binary cubic and quadratic forms over the ring of integers $O$ of an algebraic number field $k$. By applying the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces founded by M. Sato and T. Shintani, we can associate the zeta functions for these spaces. Applying these zeta functions, we derive some density theorems on the distributions of discriminants of cubic algebras of $O$. In the case $k$ is a quadratic field, we give a correction term as well as the main term. These are generalizations of Shintani's asymptotic formulae of the mean values of class numbers of binary cubic forms over $\mathbb Z$.
In this paper we give a conjectural refinement of the Davenport-Heilbronn theorem on the density of cubic field discriminants. We explain how this refinement is plausible theoretically and agrees very well with computational data.
In the paper we partially solved the problem of the distribution of the discriminants of integral polynomials in the cubic case. We proved the asymptotic formula for the number of integral cubic polynomials having bounded height and bounded discriminant. The main term of the obtained formula is the best possible for the considered range of polynomial discriminant values.
We will give an explicit upper bound for the number of solutions to cubic inequality |F(x, y)| \leq h, where F(x, y) is a cubic binary form with integer coefficients and positive discriminant D. Our upper bound is independent of h, provided that h is smaller than D^{1/4}.
Let F be the cubic field of discriminant -23 and let O be its ring of integers. By explicitly computing cohomology of congruence subgroups of GL(2,O), we computationally investigate modularity of elliptic curves over F.
Let n be an odd number and F an imaginary quadratic field with odd discriminant. We show that there exists infinitely many cubic fields K such that the class number of K is divisible by n and the Galois closure of K contains F.
For a binary quadratic form $Q$, we consider the action of $\mathrm{SO}_Q$ on a two-dimensional vector space. This representation yields perhaps the simplest nontrivial example of a prehomogeneous vector space that is not irreducible, and of a coregular space whose underlying group is not semisimple. We show that the nondegenerate integer orbits of this representation are in natural bijection with orders in cubic fields having a fixed "lattice shape". Moreover, this correspondence is discriminant-preserving: the value of the invariant polynomial of an element in this representation agrees with…
Let $k$ be a number field and $O$ the ring of integers. In the previous paper [T06] we study the Dirichlet series counting discriminants of cubic algebras of $O$ and derive some density theorems on distributions of the discriminants by using the theory of zeta functions of prehomogeneous vector spaces. In this paper we consider these objects under imposing finite number of splitting conditions at non-archimedean places. Especially the explicit formulae of residues at $s=1$ and 5/6 under the conditions are given.
The minimal integral Mahler measure of a number field $K$, $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$, is the minimal Mahler measure of a non-torsion primitive element of $\mathcal{O}_K$. Upper and lower bounds, which depend on the discriminant, are known. We show that for cubics, the lower bounds are sharp with respect to its growth as a function of discriminant. We construct an algorithm to compute $M(\mathcal{O}_K)$ for all cubics with absolute value of the discriminant bounded by $N$.
Given a nonzero integer $d$, we know by Hermite's Theorem that there exist only finitely many cubic number fields of discriminant $d$. However, it can happen that two non-isomorphic cubic fields have the same discriminant. It is thus natural to ask whether there are natural refinements of the discriminant which completely determine the isomorphism class of the cubic field. Here we consider the trace form $q_K:\text{tr}_{K/\mathbb{Q}}(x^2)|_{O^{0}_{K}}$ as such a refinement. For a cubic field of fundamental discriminant $d$ we show the existence of an element $T_K$ in Bhargava's class group $\C…
We compute the canonical model of the cover of Shimura curves $X_0(2) \to X(1)$ for the cubic field of discriminant 13^2 described at the end of Elkies' paper "Shimura curves for level 3 subgroups of the (2,3,7) triangle group". Last, we list the coordinates of some rational CM points on X(1).
We construct explicit examples of cubic surfaces over $\bbQ$ such that the 27 lines are acted upon by the index two subgroup of the maximal possible Galois group. This is the simple group of order $25 920$. Our examples are given in pentahedral normal form with rational coefficients. For such cubic surfaces, we study the discriminant and show its relation to the index two subgroup. On the corresponding parameter space, we search for rational points, discuss their asymptotic, and construct an accumulating subvariety.
The discriminant of a smooth plane cubic curve over the complex numbers can be written as a product of theta functions. This provides an important connection between algebraic and analytic objects. In this paper, we perform a new approach to obtain this classical result by using determinantal representations. More precisely, one can represent a non-singular cubic form as the determinant of a matrix whose elements are linear forms. Theta functions naturally appear in this representation and thus in the discriminant of the cubic.
Let $d$ be a positive fundamental discriminant, and let $\mathcal{C}_{d}$ be the set of isomorphism classes of cubic number fields of discriminant $d$. For each $K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}$, we construct a weight 1 modular form $f_{K}$ with level $3^{\pm 1}d$ and nebentypus $\left( \frac{-3^{\pm 1}d}{\cdot} \right)$. We show that the form $f_{K}$ completely determines the field $K$. Moreover, we show that $\{f_{K} : K \in \mathcal{C}_{d}\}$ is a linearly independent set.
We use the method of Shintani, as developed by Taniguchi and Thorne, to prove the quantitative equidistribution of the shape of cubic fields when the fields are ordered by discriminant.
We revisit a work by R. Okazaki and prove that for every cubic binary form F(x, y) with large enough discriminant, the Thue equation |F(x, y)| = 1 has at most 7 solutions in integers x and y.
In this note we present algorithms for computing Euclidean minima of cubic number fields; in particular, we were able to find all norm-Euclidean cubic number fields with discriminants -999 < d < 10000.
We study p-divisibility of discriminants of Hecke algebras associated to spaces of cusp forms of prime level. We make a precise conjecture about the indexes of Hecke algebras in their normalisation which implies (if true) the conjecture that there are no mod p congruences between non-conjugate newforms of weight 2 and level Gamma_0(p).
We prove that approximately $96.23\%$ of cubic fields, ordered by discriminant, have genus number one, and we compute the exact proportion of cubic fields with a given genus number. We also compute the average genus number. Finally, we show that a positive proportion of totally real cubic fields with genus number one fail to be norm-Euclidean.
Let $K$ be a number field, which is tame and non totally real. In this article we give a numerical criterion, depending only on the ramification behavior of ramified primes in $K$, to decide whether or not the integral trace of $K$ is isometric to the integral trace of another number field $L$. As a byproduct of our proofs here, and in contrast with our previous results for cubic fields of positive discriminant, we show that for cubic fields of negative discriminant isometry between integral traces is equivalent to equality of discriminants.
We give simple proofs of the Davenport--Heilbronn theorems, which provide the main terms in the asymptotics for the number of cubic fields having bounded discriminant and for the number of 3-torsion elements in the class groups of quadratic fields having bounded discriminant. We also establish second main terms for these theorems, thus proving a conjecture of Roberts. Our arguments provide natural interpretations for the various constants appearing in these theorems in terms of local masses of cubic rings.
Let F be the cubic field of discriminant -23 and O its ring of integers. Let Gamma be the arithmetic group GL_2 (O), and for any ideal n subset O let Gamma_0 (n) be the congruence subgroup of level n. In a previous paper, two of us (PG and DY) computed the cohomology of various Gamma_0 (n), along with the action of the Hecke operators. The goal of that paper was to test the modularity of elliptic curves over F. In the present paper, we complement and extend this prior work in two ways. First, we tabulate more elliptic curves than were found in our prior work by using various heuristics ("old a…
We determine an explicit triangular integral basis for any separable cubic extension of a rational function field over a finite field in any characteristic. We obtain a formula for the discriminant of every such extension in terms of a standard form in a tower for the Galois closure.
For $n=3$, 4, and 5, we prove that, when $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ are ordered by their absolute discriminants, the lattice shapes of the rings of integers in these fields become equidistributed in the space of lattices.
In 1997, Y. Ohno empirically stumbled on an astoundingly simple identity relating the number of cubic rings $h(D)$ of a given discriminant $D$, over the integers, to the number of cubic rings $h'(D)$ of discriminant $-27D$ in which every element has trace divisible by 3: $h'(D) = h(D)$, if $D < 0$, and $h'(D) = 3h(D)$ if $D > 0$, where in each case, rings are weighted by the reciprocal of their number of automorphisms. This allows the functional equations governing the analytic continuation of the Shintani zeta functions (the Dirichlet series built from the values of $h$ and $h'$) to be put in…
This paper contains an account of arbitrary cubic function fields of characteristic three. We define a standard form for an arbitrary cubic curve and consider its function field. By considering an integral basis for the maximal order of these function fields, we are able to calculate the field discriminant and the genus. We also describe the splitting behavior of any place, and give composition and reduction algorithms for arithmetic in the ideal class group.
Bhargava, Hanke, and Shankar have recently shown that the asymptotic average $2$-torsion subgroup size of the family of class groups of monogenized cubic fields with positive and negative discriminants is $3/2$ and $2$, respectively. In this paper, we provide strong computational evidence for these asymptotes. We then develop a pair of novel conjectures that predicts, for $p$ prime, the asymptotic average $p$-torsion subgroup size in class groups of monogenized cubic fields.
Although it is not known which groups can appear as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic number fields, it is known which groups can appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic curves. We denote the set of these groups as $S$. In this paper we deal with three problems concerning the torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields. First, we study the possible torsion groups of elliptic curves that appear over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $S_3$ and over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $\Z…
The number of non-isomorphic cubic fields L sharing a common discriminant d(L) = d is called the multiplicity m = m(d) of d. For an assigned value of d, these fields are collected in a multiplet M(d) = (L(1) ,..., L(m)). In this paper, the information in all existing tables of totally real cubic number fields L with positive discriminants d(L) < 10000000 is extended by computing the differential principal factorization types tau(L) in (alpha1, alpha2, alpha3, beta1, beta2, gamma, delta1, delta2, epsilon) of the members L of each multiplet M(d) of non-cyclic fields, a new kind of arithmetical i…
In this paper we determine the group of rational automorphisms of binary cubic and quartic forms with integer coefficients and non-zero discriminant in terms of certain quadratic covariants of cubic and quartic forms. This allows one to give precise asymptotic formulae for the number of integers in an interval representable by a binary cubic or quartic form and extends work of Hooley. Further, we give the field of definition of lines contained in certain cubic and quartic surfaces related to binary cubic and quartic forms.
Algebraic space--time coding --- a powerful technique developed in the context of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications --- has profited tremendously from tools from Class Field Theory and, more concretely, the theory of central simple algebras and their orders. During the last decade, the study of space--time codes for practical applications, and more recently for future generation (5G+) wireless systems, has provided a practical motivation for the consideration of many interesting mathematical problems. One such problem is the explicit computation of orders of central…
Let k be an imaginary quadratic number field (with class number 1). We describe a new, essentially linear-time algorithm, to list all isomorphism classes of cubic extensions L/k up to a bound X on the norm of the relative discriminant ideal. The main tools are Taniguchi's generalization of Davenport-Heilbronn parametrisation of cubic extensions, and reduction theory for binary cubic forms over imaginary quadratic fields. Finally, we give numerical data for k=Q(i), and we compare our results with ray class field algorithm ones, and with asymptotic heuristics, based on a generalization of Robert…
Given a number field $k$ and a quadratic extension $K_2$, we give an explicit asymptotic formula for the number of isomorphism classes of cubic extensions of $k$ whose Galois closure contains $K_2$ as quadratic subextension, ordered by the norm of their relative discriminant ideal. The main tool is Kummer theory. We also study in detail the error term of the asymptotics and show that it is $O(X^α)$, for an explicit $α<1$.
We compute the $p$-adic regulator of cyclic cubic extensions of $\mathbb Q$ with discriminant up to $10^{16}$ for $3<p<100$, and observe the distribution of the $p$-adic valuation of the regulators. We find that for almost all primes, the observation matches the model that the entries in the regulator matrix are random elements with respect to the obvious restrictions. Based on this random matrix model, a conjecture on the distribution of the valuations of $p$-adic regulators of cyclic cubic fields is stated.
We show that the shape of a complex cubic field lies on the geodesic of the modular surface defined by the field's trace-zero form. We also prove a general such statement for all orders in étale Q-algebras. Applying a method of Manjul Bhargava and Piper H to results of Bhargava and Ariel Shnidman, we prove that the shapes lying on a fixed geodesic become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure as the discriminant of the complex cubic field goes to infinity. We also show that the shape of a complex cubic field is a complete invariant (within the family of all cubic fields).
Let K be the totally real cubic field of discriminant 49, let O be its ring of integers, and let p be the prime over 7. Let Gamma (p)\subset Gamma = SL_2(O) be the principal congruence subgroup of level p. This paper investigates the geometry of the Hilbert modular threefold attached to Gamma (p) and some related varieties. In particular, we discover an octic in P^3 with 84 isolated singular points of type A_2.
In this paper, we consider maximal and irreducible quartic orders which arise from integral binary quartic forms, via the construction of Birch and Merriman, and whose field of fractions is a quartic $D_4$-field. By a theorem of M. Wood, such quartic orders may be regarded as quartic $D_4$-fields whose ring of integers has a monogenic cubic resolvent. We shall give the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by conductor, as well as estimate the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by discriminant.
We determine the shapes of pure cubic fields and show that they fall into two families based on whether the field is wildly or tamely ramified (of Type I or Type II in the sense of Dedekind). We show that the shapes of Type I fields are rectangular and that they are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, when ordered by discriminant, in the one-dimensional space of all rectangular lattices. We do the same for Type II fields, which are however no longer rectangular. We obtain as a corollary of the determination of these shapes that the shape of a pure cubic field is a complete invariant deter…
Let $K = \Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ satisfying an irreducible polynomial $x^{9} - a$ over the field $\Q$ of rationals and $\Z_K$ denote the ring of algebraic integers of $K$. In this article, we provide the exact power of each prime which divides the index of the subgroup $\Z[θ]$ in $\Z_K$. Further, we give a $p$-integral basis of $K$ for each prime $p$. These $p$-integral bases lead to a construction of an integral basis of $K$ which is illustrated with examples.
A discriminant algebra operation sends a commutative ring $R$ and an $R$-algebra $A$ of rank $n$ to an $R$-algebra $Δ_{A/R}$ of rank $2$ with the same discriminant bilinear form. Constructions of discriminant algebra operations have been put forward by Rost, Deligne, and Loos. We present a simpler and more explicit construction that does not break down into cases based on the parity of $n$. We then prove properties of this construction, and compute some examples explicitly.
We present a method for tabulating all cubic function fields over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ whose discriminant $D$ has either odd degree or even degree and the leading coefficient of $-3D$ is a non-square in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^*$, up to a given bound $B$ on the degree of $D$. Our method is based on a generalization of Belabas' method for tabulating cubic number fields. The main theoretical ingredient is a generalization of a theorem of Davenport and Heilbronn to cubic function fields, along with a reduction theory for binary cubic forms that provides an efficient way to compute equivalence classes of bin…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic not 2 or 3. Let $V$ be the $k$-space of binary cubic polynomials. The natural symplectic structure on $k^2$ promotes to a symplectic structure $ω$ on $V$ and from the natural symplectic action of $\textrm{Sl}(2,k)$ one obtains the symplectic module $(V,ω)$. We give a complete analysis of this symplectic module from the point of view of the associated moment map, its norm square $Q$ (essentially the classical discriminant) and the symplectic gradient of $Q$. Among the results are a symplectic derivation of the Cardano-Tartaglia formulas for the roots of a cu…
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
For given non-zero integers a,b,q we investigate the density of integer solutions (x,y) to the binary cubic congruence ax^2+by^3=0 (mod q). We use this to establish the Manin conjecture for a singular del Pezzo surface of degree 2 defined over the rationals and to examine the distribution of elliptic curves with square-free discriminant.
Stickelberger proved that the discriminant of a number field is congruent to 0 or 1 modulo 4. We generalize this to an arbitrary (not necessarily commutative) ring of finite rank over the integers using techniques from linear algebra. Our proof, which relies only on elementary matrix identities, is new even in the classical case.
Let $K=\mathbb Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ a root of an irreducible trinomial $f(x)=x^6+ax+b$ belonging to $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. In this paper, for each prime number $p$ we compute the highest power of $p$ dividing the discriminant of $K$ in terms of the prime powers dividing $a,~b$ and discriminant of $f(x)$. An explicit $p$-integral basis of $K$ is also given for each prime $p$ and a method is described to obtain an integral basis of $K$ from these $p$-integral bases which is illustrated with examples.
We classify all the number fields with signature (4,2), (6,1), (1,4) and (3,3) having discriminant lower than a specific upper bound. This completes the search for minimum discriminants for fields of degree 8 and continues it in the degree 9 case. We recall the theoretical tools and the algorithmic steps upon which our procedure is based, then we focus on the novelties due to a new implementation of this process on the computer algebra system PARI/GP; finally, we make some remarks about the final results, among which the existence of a number field with signature $(3,3)$ and small discriminant…
Consider tuples of separable algebras over a common local or global number field, related to each other by specified resolvent constructions. Under the assumption that all ramification is tame, simple group-theoretic calculations give best possible divisibility relations among the discriminants. We show that for many resolvent constructions, these divisibility relations continue to hold even in the presence of wild ramification.
