In this note we present algorithms for computing Euclidean minima of cubic number fields; in particular, we were able to find all norm-Euclidean cubic number fields with discriminants -999 < d < 10000.
In 1848 Ch.~Hermite asked if there exists some way to write cubic irrationalities periodically. A little later in order to approach the problem C.G.J.~Jacobi and O.~Perron generalized the classical continued fraction algorithm to the three-dimensional case, this algorithm is called now the Jacobi-Perron algorithm. This algorithm is known to provide periodicity only for some cubic irrationalities. In this paper we introduce two new algorithms in the spirit of Jacobi-Perron algorithm: the heuristic algebraic periodicity detecting algorithm and the $\sin^2$-algorithm. The heuristic algebraic peri…
An analogue of the Euclidean algorithm for square matrices of size 2 with integral non-negative entries and strictly positive determinant $n$ defines a finite set $\mathcal{R}(n)$ of Euclid-reduced matrices corresponding to elements of $\{(a, b, c, d) \in \mathbb{N}^4 | n = ab - cd,\ 0 \le c, d < a, b\}$. With Popeye's help[2] on the use of sails of lattices we show that $\mathcal{R}(n)$ contains $\sum{d|n, d^2 \ge n} (d + 1 - n/d)$ elements.
A modified form of Euclid's algorithm has gained popularity among musical composers following Toussaint's 2005 survey of so-called Euclidean rhythms in world music. We offer a method to easily calculate Euclid's algorithm by hand as a modification of Bresenham's line-drawing algorithm. Notably, this modified algorithm is a non-recursive matrix construction, using only modular arithmetic and combinatorics. This construction does not outperform the traditional divide-with-remainder method; it is presented for combinatorial interest and ease of hand computation.
We introduce a generalization of the Euclidean algorithm for rings equipped with an involution, and completely enumerate all isomorphism classes of orders over definite, rational quaternion algebras equipped with an orthogonal involution that admit such an algorithm. We give two applications: first, any order that admits such an algorithm has class number 1; second, we show how the existence of such an algorithm relates to the problem of constructing explicit Dirichlet domains for Kleinian subgroups of the isometry group of hyperbolic 4-space.
We extend the Fourier expansion of automorphic functions of Piateski-Shapiro and Shalika in a way that the Euclidean algorithm appears nontrivially. Then, we discuss a potential application in the Rankin-Selberg method.
In this paper, we continue our previous work on the reduction of algebraic lattices over imaginary quadratic fields for the special case when the lattice is spanned over a two dimensional basis. In particular, we show that the algebraicvariant of Gauss algorithm returns a basis that corresponds to the successive minima of the lattice in polynomial time if the chosen ring is Euclidean.
